ABOUT URSULA HITZ
Ursula Hitz is an artist and designer. Born in rural Switzerland, she cultivated diverse talents in typography, graphics and cheese making. Since moving to London a decade ago, Ursula’s work has focused on location and place. She meticulously creates typographic maps of the world’s best-known cities. Ursula is interested in the ways that letters capture not only the dimensions of a place, but its personality too. Why the passion for place names? ‘I love becoming fixated on their intricacies, before taking a step back and seeing a bigger structure evolve,’ she explains. ‘Unlike regular maps, mine don’t focus on streets or buildings. Instead, they build an organic texture of words that grow from the centre – in the way that most cities have grown.’
SCREEN PRINTING [ M A D E I N B R I TA I N ]
All prints listed are hand-printed by two print makers, based in Brighton and in Bristol. ‘Screen printing or silk screening is a printing technique particularly suited for flat or relatively flat surfaces. The heart of the process involves a fine mesh or screen that is tightly stretched around a rigid frame. The areas that are not to be printed are masked out on the screen. To create the print, the framed screen is positioned over the item to be printed along with a dollop of thick ink. A squeegee is then used to press the ink through the screen. The masked areas prevent ink from passing through, but the unmasked areas allow the ink to be imprinted on the material. If more colors are desired in the final design, the process is repeated with different screens.’

...Swiss-born artist and resident Londoner Ursula Hitz has a way with words. Her distinctive brand of prose reaches beyond paperbacks and on to the city maps she creates out of a visually charming jumble of hand lettering. There’s order among the apparent chaos, as the typography represents the boroughs that make up each city – Zurich, New York and Paris have all been laid out. Why the passion for place names? ‘I love becoming fixated on their intricacies, before taking a step back and seeing a bigger structure evolve,’ she explains. ‘Unlike regular maps, mine don’t focus on streets or buildings. Instead, they build an organic texture of words that grow from the centre – in the way that most cities have grown.’ · Donna Hardie http://bit.ly/qP8dLm • page 46 - 47

THRILLIST August 2011
DESKTOP MAGAZINE
From a Swiss designer turned Londoner whose talents apparently lie in “typography, graphics, and cheese-making”, Hitz is now laying out her new home on a trio of typographic prints depicting Greater, zones 1-3, and Central via tightly packed neighborhood names morphed to fit the size and shape of their respective areas, though to accommodate its space, Walthamstow is oddly spelled without any F’s. She’s also done Paris, New York & Zurich -- hit UrsulaHitz.com and admire the beauty.

W H AT I S A C I D - F R E E PA P E R ? (Archival) Acid-free paper is paper that has a neutral or basic pH (7 or slightly greater). It can be made from any cellulose fiber as long as the active acid pulp is eliminated during processing. It is also lignin and sulfur free. Acid-free paper addresses the problem of preserving documents for long periods. source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia deckle edge In manual papermaking, a deckle is a removable wooden frame or “fence” placed into a mould to keep the paper slurry within bounds and to control the size of the sheet produced. After the mold is dipped into a vat of paper slurry, excess water is drained off and the deckle is removed and the mold shaken or “couched” to set the fibers of the paper. Some of the paper slurry passes under the deckle and forms an irregular, thin edge. Paper with a feathered or soft edge is described as having a “deckled” edge, in contrast with a cut edge.

W H AT I S A L I M I T E D E D I T I O N P R I N T ? In printmaking, an edition is a number of prints struck from one plate, usually at the same time. This may be a limited edition, with a fixed number of impressions produced on the understanding that no further impressions (copies) will be produced later, or an open edition limited only by the number that can be sold or produced before the plate wears. Most modern artists produce only limited editions, normally signed by the artist in pencil, and numbered as say 67/100 to show the unique number of that impression and the total edition size. numbering Because of the variation in quality, lower-numbered prints in an edition are sometimes favoured as superior, especially with older works where the image was struck until the plate wore out. However the numbering of impressions in fact may well not equate at all to the sequence in which they were printed, and may often be the reverse of it... source: http://www.arttips.co.uk
W H AT I S A N A RT I S T ’ S P R O O F ? ..Artist’s proofs are not included in the count of a limited edition, and sometimes the number of artist’s proofs, which belong to the artist, can be surprisingly high at twenty or more. By convention, the artist is not supposed to sell these at once. source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
