IT’S THE MOST

WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

Well, almost. Being in the thick of baseball season is the most wonderful time of the year. Spending all of your time at the diamond with the smell of sunscreen and hot dogs filling the air as the ping of a bat and the pop of a ball in a mitt served as the soundtrack of your life. There are games to be hosting Baseballs to be throwing And pitchers striking out the side There are underdog stories And tales of the glories of Team USA winning gold The holiday season is a close second. The holiday season, like baseball season, is filled with fun, laughter, good food, and family. It’s also filled with memories of the pressure of creating the perfect holiday wish list. Do you remember being a kid spending hours looking at catalogs and walking through the stores trying to find the absolute best things to ask for? A brandnew glove, a bat, a pack of baseball cards, or something from your favorite baseball team – a hat or jersey, perhaps? There was no better feeling than opening a present from a loved one that celebrated your love of baseball. So, commemorate those joyous memories as you look to give the gift of baseball to a loved one this year. Share those defining moments of your pastime with our pastime’s future. Give the gift of baseball. And while you’re at it, build your own wish list for old time’s sake. After all, the most wonderful time of the year is just around the corner.

A LOOK BACK TO THE

1984 OLYMPIC TEAM USA VS CHINESE TAIPEI Team USA started the tournament by coming from behind to defeat Chinese Taipei 2-1.

Although baseball was considered a demonstration sport during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, it was still a huge turning point for the sport on the international stage. For the first time in Olympic history, baseball was officially included in the program and featured a tournament-style format with a gold medal final. But, even more significantly for Team USA, it was first time the sport was played in an Olympic Games hosted by the United States. Competing on the biggest international sport stage on home soil for the first time, the U.S. came out swinging. It went into the final as the only undefeated team in the tournament before falling to Japan in the gold medal game to claim the silver.

USA VS ITALY The U.S. followed its opening win with a 16-1 rout of Italy in the second game that featured a 9-run first inning.

USA VS DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Another big win – a 10-0 take down of the Dominican Republic – closed out group play strong for the U.S.

USA VS SOUTH KOREA In a semifinal matchup against South Korea, Team USA broke a 2-2 tie with a 3-run bottom of the sixth to secure its spot in the gold medal game.

USA VS JAPAN Despite getting on the board first with a run in the third inning for a 1-0 lead, Team USA fell to Japan, 6-3, in the final to earn a silver medal in the tournament.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW...

B.J. SURHOFF 1983 Collegiate National Team 1984 Olympic Team

40

/

U S A B A S E B A L L S H O P. C O M

Four years of high school baseball. Three years playing in a top Division I program. Nineteen MLB seasons. A lifetime spent on a baseball diamond. B.J. Surhoff has enjoyed a career that most players dream of. But for the two-time collegiate All-American and former Major League AllStar, nothing will ever compare to competing for Team USA. “There’s nothing like playing for your country,” Surhoff said. “I think the guys that do it really enjoy it and it’s something you can’t replicate. To me, there’s nothing like playing for the U.S. I loved the teams I played for in the big leagues but I would’ve played anytime I could for the national team.” First though, despite being selected by his then-favorite team, the New York Yankees, in the fifth round of the 1982 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Surhoff took the collegiate route instead, a decision he always saw as inevitable. Offered a late scholarship by the University of North Carolina – a school Surhoff knew nothing about until then but one that felt like home as soon as he stepped on campus – the versatile catcher settled into what would prove to be a college career for the record books And it started with a solid freshman campaign that caught the attention of USA Baseball. After originally missing the cut for the 1983 Collegiate National Team, Surhoff was later offered a spot on the roster to replace a member of the team that had been drafted and he made the most of it. “I was fortunate enough to play in 1983 after my freshman year,” Surhoff remembers. “I got a chance to play (in the Intercontinental Cup) and played really well. Then because of playing well there, I got a chance to be the starter (at the Pan American Games). I played in every game down there and played really, really well. “I had a good freshman year (at

UNC), but (Team USA) kind of put me on the map in terms of how people looked at me and my draft status for the two years to follow. It was a great experience for me and I loved doing it.” That strong showing in 1983 and another impressive season in Chapel Hill had Team USA calling again the very next year. But this time, the opportunity – and the stage – was even bigger. The 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. America’s pastime was on the Olympic programme for the first time (officially as a demonstration sport, but try to tell Surhoff and the rest of that team it didn’t matter just as much) and America had home field advantage. “It was fantastic. I’m not sure anyone had bigger crowds – Dodger Stadium holds 56,000 people and it was sold out for every game,” Surhoff said. “There was nothing like playing in Dodger Stadium in front of our home fans. It was only a fivegame exhibition and we won a silver but the experience was great.” Surhoff believes that the grind of the pre-Olympics tour and the biggest international athletic event in the world prepared those young future Major League stars for the bright lights of professional baseball more than anything else ever could. “Many of those guys were in the big leagues within the next year or two so it gave us a great experience in terms of playing in front of big crowds,” Surhoff said. “I really believe it was one reason so many guys did well so early because they weren’t intimidated. I thought it was invaluable to all of us to get an idea of what the grind of pro ball could be like.” And that experience did serve Surhoff well as it propelled and prepared him for 19 successful seasons with three Major League clubs after he was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick the next year by the Milwaukee Brewers. In that time, the versatile Surhoff

hit over .280 in 12 of his 19 seasons and racked up 2,326 hits and 1,153 RBIs while appearing at every position except pitcher over the course of his career. He was also named an All-Star in 1999 and participated in the Home Run Derby that same year. After all that time and success on the diamond, it only made sense that Surhoff would still be found on one following his retirement in 2005. These days though, it’s about sharing the experiences and learnings that proved so valuable for him. And just like in his playing days, Surhoff’s role is a flexible one that takes full advantage of his versatility. “The last six or seven plus years, I’ve gone to Spring Training and there are three minor league teams within an hour of my house so I go to about 10 games per month,” Surhoff explained. “I get on field with guys, watch the game from the dugout, talk to them – coaches and players – and try to help them in any situations I can.” Everything from the basics of offense and defense to the mental side of the game or even just being a sounding board to a player or coach that needs an experienced

ear, Surhoff helps with it all. And he enjoys every minute and aspect of it. “There’s so much to be learned. The ebbs and flows. The ups and downs. I tell people all the time it’s not just playing hard every day but doing the right things and preparing the right way,” Surhoff said. “For those guys that don’t feel like they’re getting a chance, somebody is always watching. Twenty-nine other teams are watching so if you do things the right way and you play well, somebody is going to notice. “Not everybody’s going to make it but somebody is and it might as well be you. It’s a long process and some guys get more opportunities than others but when you do get the opportunity, are you ready for it?” Surhoff certainly was. And now he’s making sure others are as well.

ONE STEP CLOSER TO PLAYING

FOR GLORY Standing out is no easy task at the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS) – the organization’s most comprehensive national team identification event – as the competition includes the very best athletes from across the country. While over 1,250 athletes participate each year in over 150 games, only 68 are selected from the Champions Cup in Cary, North Carolina, to participate in the national team selection process. “The athletes selected from the 2018 NTIS delivered outstanding performances from round one

regional tryouts all the way through the NTIS Champions Cup in Cary and truly separated themselves as the best of the best,” said NTIS Tournament Director Russell Hartford. “We are excited to see each of them next summer when they report for our National Team Trials and Development Programs.” Congratulations to every athlete who was selected to their region team and also to those 68 athletes who will join the national team selection pool for 2019. Consistency. It has been the backbone of what has made the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team so dominant for so much of its history. Consistently learning. Consistently growing. Consistently winning. The Collegiate National Team was once again consistent in 2018. After beginning the summer with a perfect 6-0 record, Team USA lost its series opener against Japan. Keeping true to their consistent nature, they quickly bounced back shutout victory on Independence Day. They would go on to win five of their next seven games and for the second year in a row, the Collegiate National Team swept their international series. To add to that, Team USA has won their last seven series dating back to the 2016 campaign and 11 of its last 14 international series dating back to 2014. “The experience of meeting 26 new young men who gave everything they had for three weeks, for 15 ball games. I admire them all so much. They all have great talent, but they are also wonderful young men,” said 2018 Collegiate National Team manager Paul Mainieri. “They are really a credit to their schools, the baseball programs they represent back at their universities, and to our country. They have done nothing except carry themselves in a firstclass way. It was an experience that

we will never forget.” Notable performances from this summer include catcher Adley Rutschman leading the team in batting average, with a final slash line of .355/.432/.516, Freshman Max Meyer striking out batters at an incredible 16.875 K/9 rate, and Daniel Cabrera earning the Batting Champion award for his efforts in the 18th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series. He finished the year leading Team USA in home runs and multi-hit games. Despite these standout performances, it was a full team effort that allowed the Collegiate National Team to finish the summer with a 12-3 record. If one player stumbled, the next was there to pick up the slack. If a clutch hit was needed, it was delivered. These are the characteristics of a team that plays to win #ForGlory. So, thank you to Team USA for another season of consistent hard work. Sweeping the competition is something special, and even more so when you do it for the second year in a row. Team USA has consistently proven to be best, and 2018 was no exception.

AMERICAS QUALIFIER

Team USA will get its first chance to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in November 2019 at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) flagship Premier12™. The Premier12™ is the professional national team global baseball championship that features the top-12 countries in the WBSC World Baseball Rankings. In just the second iteration of the event, Team USA enters as the defending silver medalists and is currently ranked No. 1 in the world rankings. The top finisher in the event from the Americas, in addition to the top finisher in the event from Asia/Oceania (excluding Olympic-host Japan), will earn its spot at Tokyo 2020. The remaining countries will have two additional opportunities to qualify for the Olympic Games.

An eight-team tournament comprised of the Americas representatives that did not qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games from the Premier12™ will take place in the spring of 2020. The winner of the Americas Qualifier will secure a spot at the Olympic Games.

INTERCONTINENTAL QUALIFIER The final opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games, the Intercontinental Qualifier will be a six-team tournament that will feature representatives who have not previously qualified for the Olympic Games from the Africa/ Europe Qualifier, Americas Qualifier, Asian Championships and the Oceania Qualifier.

GETTING TO KNOW

ZACH JACKSON What do you look forward to most during the holiday season? The thing I look forward to most during the holidays is definitely getting to see all my family. My entire mom and dad’s side of the family are both from my hometown so everybody gets together throughout the holidays and that is pretty much what we spend all our time doing.

What is the best baseball-related present you have ever received? The best baseball-related present I have ever received is probably a scrapbook my mom made of my college team’s – the University of Arkansas – run to Omaha. She just took memories from throughout the whole year and put the whole thing together and it was really meaningful.

memory is definitely when I was younger my cousin was deployed over in Iraq and he surprised the whole family on Christmas. It was super emotional, surprised everybody and definitely made it the best Christmas yet.

Is there anything on your holiday wish list this year from USABaseballShop.com? A piece I am really fond of is the Under Armour USA Baseball hoodie. It’s very soft and I can see myself wearing it this whole holiday season.

What is your favorite food to eat during the holidays? My favorite food to eat during the holidays are probably my mom’s sausage balls. It’s kind of her holiday treat so it’s definitely the favorite.

What is your favorite holiday memory?

What is your favorite holiday movie?

My favorite holiday is Christmas, partially because it’s also my birthday. My favorite Christmas

My favorite holiday movie would have to be Christmas Vacation.

90

/

U S A B A S E B A L L S H O P. C O M

What is your favorite holiday song? My favorite holiday song is ”All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey.

Do you work with any particular charities or are you active in the community during the holiday season? I try to be very active in my community. It’s a very small community so when I go back home I definitely try to make appearances with the baseball team and the football team, maybe trying to inspire some of the guys and just try to be a role model for them.

GETTING TO KNOW

TRENT GRISHAM What do you look forward to most during the holiday season? The thing I look forward to most during the holidays is hanging out with friends and family. What is the best baseball-related present you have ever received? The best baseball-related gift I ever got was a replica 1940-something Stan Musial jersey. He’s always been my favorite player growing up and I always liked to read about him and watch videos on him. I loved the way people talked about him off the field.

What is your favorite holiday memory? My favorite holiday memories are always when my family travels up to Oklahoma City every Christmas Eve to spend time with family up there. We always drive back late on Christmas Eve night. It’s usually Christmas morning technically when we get there, so we always open presents right then when we are all dead tired... from a four-hour drive. That’s probably my favorite.

Is there anything on your holiday wish list this year from USABaseballShop.com?

Do you work with any particular charities or are you active in the community during the holiday season?

My favorite hat this year in the collection is the Royal Pop 59FIFTY just because it’s different. It’s not like every other hat.

What is your favorite food to eat during the holidays? My favorite food to eat during the holidays is Thanksgiving turkey.

What is your favorite holiday movie? My favorite holiday movie is Elf, without a doubt.

I go back to the high school and I make sure to get them whatever I am wearing that year. So, this year I am wearing New Balance, I usually try to get them cleats and shorts and workout stuff from New Balance. They give me a little charity money and I use that toward Richland High School. Or, our coach from that high school usually does a Thanksgiving drive where we go help under-privileged families and we just go door-to-door, or the school helps collect all the meals, and we separate them out. I think we started out with five families and I think now it’s upwards of 30-40 families. I try to go back and get with them and go door-to-door for as many as I can and just help out.
