AVAILABLE ONLINE AND AT THE USA BASEBALL TEAM STORE
WELCOME TO CARY, N.C.
On behalf of the national governing body for our sport in the United States, we would like to welcome you to the USA Baseball National Training Complex for the 2018 Futures Invitational! USA Baseball is coming off a historical 2017 season in which we won every international competition our national teams competed in, winning four gold medals and three international friendship series. It was a feat never realized before in international baseball history and we are incredibly proud of this accomplishment. Due to this unprecedented success, USA Baseball has reclaimed the number one spot in the World Baseball Softball Confederation World Baseball Rankings for the first time since 2014. While it is gratifying to be recognized as the preeminent baseball federation in the world, this would not have been possible without the countless individuals who work for, and on behalf of, USA Baseball. And, more importantly, it would not be possible without the tremendous athletes who, like you, continue to fight for the opportunity to represent their country on one of our national teams. USA Baseball is proud of our track record in developing youth players into premier athletes and that begins at events just like this one. USA Baseball alumni and MLB stars, including Clayton Kershaw, Bryce Harper, Eric Hosmer, Alex Bregman and many more, have participated in USA Baseball events and later became a part of the USA Baseball family on their path to the major leagues. The USA Baseball Futures Invitational is now in its fourth year and we are excited for the continued support in the expansion of our youth event offerings to players at this age level. It is paramount to the proliferation of baseball in the United States to continue provide opportunities to our youth to play the game we love. The opportunity that the Futures Invitational brings to athletes across the nation is unlike any other. It not only provides the opportunity to compete with the nation’s best players, but also the chance to represent the United States in international competition as part of the 12U National Team. We are committed to bringing first class competition to the players, coaches and fans of the participating teams. As you begin play, we wish all of the players and teams good luck as they strive to win a championship, as well as a spot on the USA Baseball 12U National Team this year, or in the future. Once again, welcome to the 2018 USA Baseball Futures Invitational. We are excited that you are here and look forward to seeing phenomenal baseball played throughout the next few days! Yours in baseball,
Paul Seiler Executive Director/CEO USA Baseball

12U NATIONAL TEAM PREVIEW
By KATIE BOSTIC | USA Baseball
Coming off its third consecutive World Baseball Softball Confederation U-12 Baseball World Cup title, Team USA has its eyes set on one thing – winning a Pan American Championships gold medal. Since its inaugural year in 2012, Team USA has captured three world championships but has been just short of a Pan American gold medal, winning silver in its past three outings at the biennial event. “Our goal is to bring home the [Pan American Championships] gold for the first time,“ said 2018 12U National Team Manager Todd Fine. “I think we’ve been really close. Obviously, our goal is to win and to put together the most competitive team that is going to give us the best opportunity.” Coach Fine is no stranger to USA Baseball or to the international stage and will bring a wealth of experience to the team this summer. The four-time assistant coach was a part of 12U Teams that won two world championships and two silver medals. He’s also coached for USA Baseball with the 18U program at the Tournament of Stars and National Team Trials. “It’s super, super exciting. I’ve been a part of USA Baseball for ten years and I’ve been with the 12U National Team the past four years,” Fine said. “Having the opportunity to lead this team is a dream come true and it’s very humbling; there’s a higher sense of responsibility and I’m excited for it.” 2 | 2018 FUTURES INVITATIONAL
When asked about his former assistant coach taking the reins, David Sharp, the 2017 12U National Team manager, did not hesitate to hide his excitement. “There could not be a better person leading our team than Todd Fine,” Sharp stated. “He is well deserving and his staff will bring home the Pan Am gold this year.” Fine has been to the Pan American games twice as an assistant coach, and that added experience will no doubt help Team USA trying to achieve a milestone that has been looming for the 12U Team. “Pan Ams are obviously a very competitive tournament and we’ll have our kids prepared. If everyone is pulling the rope the same way, we will have no issues,” Fine continued. “Pulling the rope” is part of the “two feet in” mantra that was introduced to the 12U National Team last season. The message is that if everyone is pulling the rope the same way, the tension brought by the opponent won’t stand a chance. Fine is adamant that last year’s “two feet in” mentality isn’t going anywhere. “We only have these kids as a team for four or five days before we go [to Mexico], and kids are going to be asked to do different roles than they do on their travel teams,” Fine said. “In order for us to have success, we need to adopt the two feet in mentality anything that can help the team win. “Every kid needs to buy in. No matter what that role is – whatever it may be – every single player is just as important and
every single person has a role that is important.” Fine is equally excited about – and demanding of – his coaching staff and having the chance to go to battle with guys that [he’s] been there with before. The 2018 12U Team coaching staff is chock full of Team USA coaching alumni. Pitching Coach Jason Sekany has helped Team USA to two gold medals and Assistant Coach RJ Farrell was on staff for the 2017 World Cup. Meanwhile, making his Team USA national team coaching debut is Assistant Coach Marc Wiese, who has previously served on the coaching staffs of the 2016 and 2017 12U National Team Trials. Former 12U National Team managers David Sharp (2017), Eric Borba (2016), and Tanner Vessley (2015) will assist with the identification of the 2018 12U National Team as coaches as the USA Baseball 12U National Open, the final identification event before Trials. Following the 12U National Open, 26 players will join the 14 athletes who were selected from the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series and 11U Futures Invitational for National Team Trials. There, the staff will finalize the 18-player roster for 2018. While Fine has goals and expectations of his team at the Pan American Championships, he has one ultimate wish for the summer that is driving him and his coaching staff. “Hopefully the kids will walk away with life-long friendships and a gold medal.”
FORMER PAR TICIPANTS T OD D FI N E 2018 12U NATIONAL TEAM MANAGER SPOTLIGHT
J OSH ATOMA NCZ Y K
After appearing in the 2017 11U Futures Invitational, Josh Atomanczyk helped lead the 2017 12U National Team to its thirdstraight World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup title. Following a stellar tournament, he was named to the All-World Team (Starting Pitcher) and was later awarded the USA Baseball International Performance of the
Year award, which he shared with MLB star and 2017 World Baseball Classic MVP, Marcus Stroman.
K AI C A R A N T O
Kai Caranto was a member of the 2016 12U National Team and the 2017 gold medal-winning 12U National Team after playing in the Futures Invitational. He was named the MVP of the 2017 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup and was also named to the WBSC All-World Team (Shortstop).
RA LP H Y V ELA ZQU EZ
Ralphy Velazquez was a vital part of both the 2016 and 2017 12U National Teams. In 2016, he hit .500 over six games. A year later, he helped lead Team USA to its third consecutive World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup gold medal with a .409 average and nine RBI.
DA N I EL A R A MBU LA
Another two-time Futures Invitational participant, Daniel Arambula appeared in nine games for the USA Baseball 12U National Team en route to the U.S. winning its thirdstraight World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup.
As a four-time national team assistant coach, Todd Fine is no stranger to suiting up for Team USA. But 2018 is different. This year marks a whole new chapter because now he is getting his chance at the helm. In May, Fine was named the manager of the 2018 12U National Team and will lead the squad in its quest for its first-ever COPABE Pan American “A” Championships gold. “I am extremely humbled and excited to be named manager of this team,” said Fine. “Me and the rest of our staff are looking forward to putting together a team made up of athletes with both high level talent and character. Our sights are set on bringing home a Pan American Championships gold medal for the first time in 12U National Team history.” He has served as the pitching coach for the 12U National Team for four consecutive years from 2014-2017. In that time, his pitching staffs have held a cumulative ERA of 3.21 and have an overall record of 30-5. In addition, the 2015 and 2017 teams claimed their second and third consecutive gold medals at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup. In those world championship years, Fine’s pitchers went 16-2 with 108 strikeouts. The 2015 staff also recorded a 2.31 team ERA en route to the title and a player named to the All-World teams in each year. But while Fine’s success is already evident, 2018 is more than just the next step in his journey with Team USA. It’s a chance to lead the 12U National Team program to where it’s never been before and he’s more than up to the challenge.

least five innings, the game will be ended at that point In the case of inclement weather, the Championship Bracket will be given priority treatment to finish games, followed by allowing the teams in the consolation bracket to play an even number of games. This will be done to the best of USA Baseball’s ability. Any games that are rescheduled due to inclement weather may be played at an off-site facility. USA Baseball reserves the right to end non-championship games in a tie if it is deemed in the best interest of the health of the athletes and the event. Any participant (player, coach, fan, etc.) ejected from a game shall have the circumstances of his/her ejection review by the Technical Committee made up of three USA Baseball representatives. The Technical Committee shall then decide what penalty, if any, shall be applied to that person or team. The additional penalty may include suspension from a subsequent game(s), suspension from the tournament all together, or team forfeiture resulting in a 7-0 loss. A tenth hitter, or extra hitter, hereby known as the “EH” may be utilized by any team. The use of an “EH” is optional and is not mandatory. If one team elects to use an “EH” it will not be required that the opposing team also us an “EH”. The extra hitter must be indicated in the line-up as the “EH”. The “EH” will be treated as any other starter and cannot be eliminated during the course of the game. The “EH” can exchange positions with other defensive players in the lineup. A player that starts the game as an “EH” or becomes an “EH” at any time thereafter, is not required to remain solely as the “EH”. The starting batting order must be following in order. Changing of the “starting batting order” once the game begins is strictly prohibited.
TIE-BREAKER RULES (For seeding purposes only; in order of use) 1. Head-to-head competition provided all teams have played each other 2. Fewest runs allowed (overall) 3. Overall Run Differential (overall) 4. Coin flip 10U EXTRA INNING RULE If the game is tied after six (6) innings and they have not exceeded the 2 hour and 15 minute time limit, teams will play extra innings until the 2 hour and 15 minute time limit is reached. The following procedures will be implemented during extra innings: • Each team will begin the 7th inning (and any subsequent necessary extra innings) with a player on first and second, no outs. • To begin the 7th inning, representatives from
each team will meet at home plate and will indicate (at the same time) to the home plate umpire where the team wishes to begin the batting order. That is, the teams have the option of beginning the 7th inning anywhere in the existing batting order that was in effect when the 6th inning ended. Note that this is not a new lineup (just potentially a different order), and it may very well be the same lineup that ended the 6th inning. • For example, if the team decides to have the #1 hitter in the lineup hit first, then the #8 hitter will be placed at 2B and the #9 hitter will be placed at 1B. Furthermore, if the team decides to have the #3 hitter in the lineup hit first, then the #1 hitter would be at 2B and the #2 hitter would be at 1B. • Once those players/runners are determined for the 7th inning, the order of any subsequent innings will be determined by how the previous inning ended. That is, if the 7th inning ends with the #6 hitter having the last plate appearance (PA), then the 8th inning begins with the #7 hitter at bat, and the #5 hitter at 2B and the #6 hitter at first base. • “Official Rules of Baseball” per the NFHS rule book and “Futures Invitational Tournament Rules” will remain in effect during extra innings required to determine a winner. • No player re-entry is permitted during extra innings. • The traditional system of the visiting team hitting in the top of the inning and the home team hitting in the bottom of the inning will remain in effect until a winner is determined. If the score is tied when the 2 hours and 15 minutes time limit is reached, regardless of inning, the game will result in a tie unless it is a playoff or championship round game. 11U EXTRA INNING RULE If the game is tied after seven (7) innings and they have not exceeded the 2 hour and 15 minute time limit, teams will play extra innings until the 2 hour and 15 minute time limit is reached. The following procedures will be implemented during extra innings: • Each team will begin the 8th inning (and any subsequent necessary extra innings) with a player on first and second, no outs. • To begin the 8th inning, representatives from each team will meet at home plate and will indicate (at the same time) to the home plate umpire where the team wishes to begin the batting order. Note that this is not a new lineup (just potentially a different order), and it may very well be the same lineup that ended the 7th inning. • For example, if the team decides to have the #1 hitter in the lineup hit first, then the #8
hitter will be placed at 2B and the #9 hitter will be placed at 1B. Furthermore, if the team decides to have the #3 hitter in the lineup hit first, then the #1 hitter would be at 2B and the #2 hitter would be at 1B. • Once those players/runners are determined for the 8th inning, the order of any subsequent innings will be determined by how the previous inning ended. “Keeping pitchers healthy should be a common goal of everyone in baseball. Pitch Smart is a great example of the entire baseball community, professional and amateur, coming together to make our game better.”
-- ROB MANFRED COMMISSIONER OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PITCHING RULES
REPORTING USA Baseball official scorers will be responsible for the official pitch count at each field. An aggregate report for all teams in the tournament will be distributed electronically at the completion of each day’s games to the team contact on record. The pitch count monitored and kept in the tower is the only official pitch count that will be used. Managers or coaches pitch counts are NOT official, but they are welcome to periodically check with the official scorer to ensure their count is correct. The official scorekeeper will communicate the pitch count at the beginning of each inning or as needed.

NOTE: If a pitcher reaches the daily max (pitches in a game) threshold (85) while facing a batter, the pitcher may continue to pitch until any one of the following events occur: 1. That batter reaches base; 2. That batter is retired; 3. The third out is made to complete the half-inning. SUSPENDED GAMES For purposes of applying the pitcher use limitations in the event a team plays twice on a single day because a prior game was either postponed or suspended, the following rules apply: The per-game total pitch maximums (but not mandatory rest) shall be deemed to be “reset” for the resumption of the suspended game. (For example, a pitcher who has thrown less than 20 pitches when a game is suspended may remain in the game and is not required to be removed prior to 85 pitches the next day; A player who is a team’s pitcher at the time a game is suspended and then becomes subject to a mandatory rest day at the time the suspended game is resumed shall be removed from the game at the time the game is resumed. (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and who has thrown 21 or more pitches in that game may not pitch in the resumption of the suspended game the next day.); A pitcher who must rest for a day must rest for all games on that day (i.e., rest during a postponed or resumed suspended game shall not be deemed to satisfy a mandatory rest day if there is a subsequent game on the same day). (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and who has thrown 21 or more pitches in that game may not pitch in either the resumption of the suspended game or any subsequent game that day.); A pitcher who remains in at the resumption of the suspended or postponed game may not pitch in any subsequent game that day. (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and resumed the next day may not pitch in the tsubsequent regularly scheduled game that same day.) DOUBLEHEADERS The second game of a scheduled doubleheader will not serve as a rest day for pitchers having thrown in the first game of the day. (For example, a pitcher who has thrown 21 or more pitches in the first game of the day may not pitch in any subsequent game that day and is subject to the appropriate number of rest days based on the total pitches thrown.) A pitcher who has thrown 1-20 pitches is eligible to throw in any subsequent game that day, however, he will still be limited to the daily max of 85 pitches on the day. (For example, a 9U/10U pitcher who has thrown 10 pitches
in game one may pitch in the second game that day, but is limited to only 65 pitches in that given game. At that point, the pitcher will be subject to the appropriate number of rest days based on the total pitches thrown that day, which in this case would be 4 days (66+ pitches).) Due to the nature of the tournament format, the USA Baseball Operations Staff will provide each coach with an updated pitch count sheet as soon as possible prior to the start of their second game of the day on days where a doubleheader is scheduled. PENALTY FOR VIOLATION OF PITCHER USE LIMITATION RULES If a pitcher is found to have exceeded his allowed numbers of pitches during a game, the illegal pitching situation will be rectified immediately and the incoming pitcher will be permitted as many warm up pitches as the umpire deems necessary prior to resuming the game. The Technical Committee will review the infraction and reserves the right to suspend the manager for the next game if the infraction is deemed a purposeful breech of the rules. The Technical Committee will be comprised of the USA Baseball Tournament Director, 12U National Team Manager and one member of the USA Baseball Task Force. If a pitcher is found to have exceeded his allowed pitches for a game after the game is completed, the manager may be suspended for the next tournament game. The Technical Committee will review the infraction and reserves the right to suspend the manager for the next tournament game and one additional game if the infraction is deemed a purposeful breech of the rules. In either case, the pitcher in question will not receive any direct penalty, but will be made to adhere to the prescribed days of rest based on the number of pitches at the time of the infraction. The team in question will not receive any direct penalty (beyond penalization of the manager), but will continually be made to adhere to the prescribed pitch count rules for the remainder of the event.

ning for the remainder of the game while its pitching staff held the San Diego Show to just six hits. Daniel Arambula paced the offense for Top Tier Americans, finishing the day 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and a two-run homer. Arambula also pitched three innings of two-hit baseball, striking out two batters. Dominic Smaldino got the win, giving up one unearned run in three innings pitched. The Top Tier Americans scored a total of 52 runs while allowing just seven in their undefeated five game stretch. They gave up six runs in a narrow 8-6 defeat of 3D Gold but surrendered just one more run in the entire tournament.

The 15U National Team finished the 2017 COPABE Pan Am “AA” Championships with a 7-1 record. There is only one word to describe the 18U National Team – and USA Baseball in general – in 2017: Dominant. From beginning to end the 18U Team was in control en route to its fourth consecutive world championship and seventh consecutive international gold medal at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup.

T WO FEET IN
By KATIE BOSTIC | USA Baseball
After winning gold medals in 2013 and 2015, Team USA didn’t know what going home with anything other than a gold medal in the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup felt like; and last year’s team didn’t intend on finding out. The 2017 USA Baseball 12U National Team went “two feet in” and brought home Team USA’s third-consecutive world championship with a thrilling 7-2 victory over host-country Chinese Taipei. “We couldn’t have won the gold if all of us were pulling on opposite sides of the rope,” said infielder Kai Caranto, eluding to a major tenant of the team’s “two feet in” mentality.” The coaches made sure that we all played for each other and for one reason.” 12U National Team Manager David Sharp instilled the value of being “two feet in” early on in the summer. “I’m a believer that in today’s world, in order to achieve something, you have to be totally committed to what you’re doing,” said Sharp. “When you’re selecting players, they’re the top dog back home. When you take them, you gotta get the kids to do whatever it takes to buy in. “Fortunately, I had the best coaching staff, parents and players that took the mantra two feet in. Everyone involved with the team was on the same page and were aware that they were all striving for the same goal.” 20 | 2018 FUTURES INVITATIONAL
The team’s mantra proved highly successful, resulting in the young squad going 8-1 in tournament play. Team USA was dominant in the first five games of the tournament, outscoring its opponents 80-12, including a 27-6 victory over Korea. “Going into that game, we knew that we were going to have to play well to have a chance against Korea,” said Sharp. “When you score a bunch of runs, one thing leads to another. We got the chance to play some other players that had the chance to contribute as well.” Following a 12-10 victory over Mexico, Team USA had the opportunity to avenge its only loss of the tournament in the culminating game of the World Cup against Chinese Taipei. But, Sharp made it clear that vengeance wasn’t the team’s motivation. “It wasn’t about revenge. It was about us winning the gold medal.” With the score tied at zero in a highly competitive game, Caranto stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the third inning, and within a few moments, the sold-out stadium erupted – the slugger ripped a three-run homer to give Team USA a 3-0 lead. Fittingly, Caranto didn’t allow himself to take all the credit. “I was not expecting to hit a home run. I was only thinking to drive in the run. When I saw the ball go over the fence, I was full of excitement for the team,” Caranto said. “First off, we wouldn’t have scored three runs if Ben Reiland and Spencer Butt
weren’t on base. They were also a big part of that moment.” Caranto wasn’t done yet – following his stellar performance at the plate, he pitched in relief, tossing two scoreless frames to close the game, securing Team USA’s third-consecutive U-12 Baseball World Cup title, defeating host-country Chinese Taipei 7-2. Following his performance, he was named WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup MVP and All-World Shortstop, a recognition he wasn’t expecting. “It was a team effort and we couldn’t have done it without each other. My teammates were a big part of our success. I was surrounded by talented ball players and they just made me better,” Caranto continued. In addition to Caranto being named the MVP, teammates Josh Atomanczyk and Raffaele Valazquez were named to the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup AllWorld Team. “Those kids only wanted to do one thing – and that was win a gold medal. Not a day goes by that I don’t continue to look back on that as the best professional time of my life,” said Sharp. The players, parents, and staff walked away with the gold medal, but they walked away with much more according to Caranto: “Not only have I gained teammates, but friends for life. And, as Coach Sharp would say, ‘we are world champions.’”
