If you are not already registered on this site, click on Register at the top right. Click on the Join Now button in the middle of that page on the right. Complete the registration form and select USAG-Miami in the Military Community Affiliation drop-box under HQ IMCOM. 2. Once registered, you can log in. Click on the Volunteer Tools tab located in the upper right hand corner of the webpage. 3. Click on Volunteer Profile. Complete all requested information in the volunteer profile. Be sure to enter the last four digits only of your social security number and save the page. This will ensure you are a registered volunteer. 4. You can use the Volunteer Opportunities tab to locate volunteer opportunities on the installation. If you want to volunteer off the installation, click on the Army Community Service link provides a generic volunteer position description – Special Projects Volunteer – for all off-post volunteer opportunities. 5. About the Author: Dasha Kelly is a nationally-respected writer, artist and social entrepreneur. As a spoken word artist, Dasha has performed throughout the U.S., in Canada and appeared on the final season of HBO presents Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam. Dasha holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University. She is an alum of the iconic Squaw Valley Writers Community, the former writer-in-residence for the historic Pfister Hotel, and founder of Still Waters Collective, an arts education and community-building initiative. In 2014, Dasha was selected as a U.S. Embassy Arts Envoy to teach and perform in Botswana, Africa. She is the author of one chapbook, Hither, and three books: All Fall Down, Hershey Eats Peanuts, and Call It Forth. Dasha’s second novel, Almost Crimson, was released this Spring. The Creative Writing Program of the University of Miami welcomes Neil de la Flor for our first USpeak event for the 2016. Neil de la Flor is a writer, photographer, teacher and former fashion designer based in Miami. His first book, Almost Dorothy, won the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize. De la Flor’s second book, An Elephant’s Memory of Blizzards, examines his obsession with hope, the omnipresence of memory, and the consequences of sexual abuse. De la Flor’s stories and poems, solo and collaborative, have appeared in Hayden’s Ferry Review, Indiana Review, Best American Poetry Blog among other journals. Neil teaches composition and literature at Miami Dade College, Nova Southeastern University, and Barry University. The University of Miami is happy to be pairing up with Books & Books this year. NEIL J YOUNG - WE GATHER TOGETHER - Tuesday, January 26 - 8pm. The story of the birth of the Religious Right is a familiar one. In the 1970s, mainly in response to Roe v. Wade, evangelicals and conservative Catholics put aside their longstanding historical prejudices and theological differences and joined forces to form a potent political movement that swept across the country. In this provocative book, Neil J. Young argues that almost none of this is true. Young offers an alternative history of the Religious Right that upends these widely-believed myths. Theology, not politics, defined the Religious Right. The rise of secularism, pluralism, and cultural relativism, Young argues, transformed the relations of America's religious denominations. The interfaith collaborations among liberal Protestants, Catholics, and Jews were met by a conservative Christian counter-force, which came together in a loosely bound, politically-minded coalition known as the Religious Right. This right-wing religious movement was made up of Mormons, conservative Catholics, and evangelicals, all of whom were united--paradoxically--by their contempt for the ecumenical approach they saw the liberal denominations taking. Led by the likes of Jerry Falwell, they deemed themselves the "pro-family" movement, and entered fullthroated into political debates about abortion, school prayer, the Equal Rights Amendment, gay rights, and tax exemptions for religious schools. They would go on to form a critical new base for the Republican Party. Examining the religious history of interfaith dialogue among conservative evangelicals, Catholics, and Mormons, Young argues that the formation of the Religious Right was not some brilliant political strategy hatched on the eve of a history-altering election but rather the latest iteration of a religious debate that had gone on for decades. This path breaking book will reshape our understanding of the most important religious and political movement of the last 30 years. About the Author: Neil J. Young is a historian and independent scholar in New York City. He previously taught at Princeton University. Young holds a B.A. from Duke University and a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Columbia University. His articles have appeared in American Quarterly, the Journal of Policy History, the New York Times, Slate, Huffington Post, and the Christian Science Monitor.

In Miami, for the most part, we don’t have to worry about fraudulent elections or military coups; We can sit down at a decent restaurant in Little Haiti or on Calle Ocho, over food we didn’t have to loot or riot for, then walk out of the venue without fear of shootings, home invasions, humans burned in neighborhood streets, or machete-wielding macoutes. In Haiti, however, chaos is the status quo. Haitian-American authors Mireille Sylvain-David, MJ Fievre, Katia D. Ulysse, and Fabienne Josaphat will share stories of the personal effect of chaos. They will share how hardship can taint, and uniquely beautify a home. These writers will bring to you stories from their Haiti — stories of turmoil, chaos, and confusion, but also of hope and perseverance. Hector Duarte Jr. will moderate the reading.“HECTOR DUARTE JR. (MODERATOR) is a writer out of Miami, Florida. To keep himself financially stable, he teaches English to seventh graders. To keep himself mentally stable, he reads, and writes as many stories as he can. He loves his cat, Felina, very much. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, M.J. FIEVRE published her first mystery novel, Le Feu de la Vengeance, at the age of sixteen. At nineteen, she signed her first book contract with Hachette-Deschamps, in Haiti, for the publication of a Young Adult book titled La Statuette Maléfique. Since then, M.J. has authored nine books in French. Two years ago, One Moore Book released M.J.’s children’s book, I Am Riding, written in three languages: English, French, and Haitian Creole. A Sky the Color of Chaos is her first book in English. M.J. holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Barry University and an MFA from the Creative Writing program at Florida International University. She taught writing at Nova Middle School in Davie, FL, and is currently a professor at Miami Dade College. KATIA D. ULYSSE was born in Haiti, and moved to the United States as a teen. Her writings have been published in numerous literary journals, including the Caribbean Writer, Meridians, Calabash,Peregrine, and Smartish Pace, among others. Her work has also appeared in The Butterfly’s Wayand Haiti Noir. Her first children’s book, Fabiola Can Count, was published in 2013. Ulysse lives in Maryland with her husband and daughter. When she’s not reading, writing fiction, gardening, or teaching, she blogs on VoicesfromHaiti.com. Drifting is her first book of fiction. FABIENNE JOSAPHAT was born and raised in Haiti, and graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University. She writes fiction, non-fiction and poetry, as well as screenplays. Her work has been featured in The Master’s Review, Grist Journal, Damselfly, Hinchas de Poesia, Off the Coast Journal and The Caribbean Writer. Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow is her first novel with Unnamed Press, forthcoming in February 2016.
