Decision is based on a combination of road conditions and weather forecast. Garrison Commander’s decision applies to all personnel, tenant units, directorates and agencies to include DODDS schools. Delayed Reporting or Garrison Closure will normally be made at 4 a.m. The Installation Operations Center (IOC) will update the website, command channel and phone recordings NLT 4:30 a.m., and will alert AFN. AFN will broadcast updates starting at 5 a.m. Early release decision will be made two hours prior to forecasted degradation of road conditions. This will allow for DODDS to stage school busses. The IOC will also contact tenant units in addition to updating the website, phone recordings, command channel and AFN. 2-Hour Delays: Garrison needs this time to clear the roads and parking lots. Personnel will report 2 hours later than their normally scheduled reporting time. School busses will pick up children from their bus stops two hours after their normal time. Only those personnel who are part of key and essential functions may drive on post. Functions include snow removal crews, guard force, limited dining facility, and emergency services. Safety: Weather and road conditions vary in our area. Use your best judgment and know the hazards along your route. When in doubt, don’t drive. DOD Civilians will not lose pay when the Command directs a delay, early release or closure. Affected work time will be accounted for as administrative leave IAW DODI 1400.25-M
Children of Alcoholics Week Through 18 Feb: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that as many as 1 in 4 children younger than age 18 are exposed to family members with alcohol abuse or dependence. The people who hurt most by drugs and alcohol don't even use them; they are the CHILDREN of alcoholics and other drug dependent parents. Children of Alcoholics (COA) Week a Nationwide and International campaign designed to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by children of alcohol dependent parents. COA Week celebrates the recovery of the many thousands of children (of all ages) who have received the help they needed to recover from the pain and losses suffered in their childhood. COA Week also offers hope to those still suffering from the adverse impact of parental alcohol and drug addiction through educational programs and other available resources. According to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics website, “Over 28 million Americans are children of alcoholics, and almost half are under the age of 20. Children of alcoholics are more at risk than other children for physical and emotional abuse, for mental health problems, and for alcoholism and other drug abuse.” Check out their website for all this cool stuff http://www.nacoa.org/. We all know children whose lives are impacted by their parent’s alcohol or drug abuse. Use this week (Feb 12-18) as an opportunity to learn more about this issue and ways you can provide support for these children. Child Find: What is child-find screening? Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-833221. What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly. How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation. Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks. If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the schools website (http://www.vilses.eu.dodea.edu/) and find the link for Child Find. Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. Someone will be in contact with them within 48 hours. If they do not hear back please contact the school at CIV 09662-832812 and let them know what happened. (in case of spam).

Chinese Fasching 16 Feb: 2 p.m., in 92345 Dietfurt, city center (ca. 35 km / 22 miles SW of Hohenfels) “A Chinese Carnival??” you might ask. Here's an explanatory article that can be found on Dietfurt's homepage: "Did you know that there is a real "Chinese Empire" in Bavaria? Many of you have never heard of it and will probably wonder what it’s all about. Well, this "Chinese Empire" is in fact our little town, Dietfurt on the Altmühl river, the "Town of the Seven Valleys", as we call it. Our nickname "the Chinese" has a historic origin: Our ancestors used to hide behind their strong city wall (as did the Chinese behind their famous wall) not letting in any strangers, not even the Official Receiver of the Bishops. So in a complaint, the bishop’s assistant called the citizens of Dietfurt “Chinese”. As a result of this nickname, a traditional Fasching parade with lots of Chinese costumes is celebrated every year, always taking place on the last Thursday of the Fasching season, on the so-called "Mad Thursday". After the parade, people in colorful fancy dress enjoy a long night out extending into the early hours of next morning. In 1996, a delegation from Dietfurt had been invited by the Peking TV station BTV. The following year the Dietfurt carnival was visited by a high ranking delegation from Peking. Deng Xingzhou, the leader of the delegation and second chairman of the Board for International Culture Exchange, proposed a partnership between Peking and Dietfurt.

Now, 50+ years later, the band has a huge following with their unrivaled combination of Scottish brass music, classical music, and lots of genuine Scottish humor!
