ADMINISTRATION
~RESIDENT'S Kathy Scanlan
Coordinator, reporting to Ron Galimore the Men's Program Director, plays a critical role. As stated in the Program: The position of Men's National Team Coordinator is very important for the success of the Men's National Team Program. It is essential that the National Team Coordinator be a focal point for the continuing education of both coaches and athletes, a resource for gathering and dissemination of information, and for the coordination of educational efforts. The position of the National Team Coordinator must be a very pro-active one that must be in constant contact with National Team members and coaches assessing their individual needs . The specific duties of the Men's National Team Coordinator are: Serve as a resource person and a conduit for the gathering and exchange of information to the National Team coaches. Consult with National Team athletes and coaches and through that consultation develop and monitor a training plan for each member and log and file the physical, attitudinal, and competetive status of each team member. Conduct periodic clinics for National Team members and provide formats for training camps for the national team. Serve as a technical consultant to National Team members, National Team coaches, Men's Program Committee, Junior Olympic Program Committee, and National Gymnastics Judges Association. Serve as the contact point for coaches and oversee the logistical aspects in the implementation of the Expert Clinician Program. Assist the assigned coaching staff in the development and implementation of any competition plan for international events. Attend major national and international events as necessary. Provide the National Team with relevant information on other countries progress and perSOlUl.el. Provide technical videos for judges, coaches and National Team members after major competitions where applicable.
ach of our National Team programs continue to make strides towards success. I would like to particularly commend the Athlete's Advisory Council under the inspired leadership of Tanya Service Chaplin for their efforts and support of all three National Team programs. The AAC has worked successfully since the beginning of the year to assist in reformatting the National Team meetings and to review and improve our National Team agreements. They are also working on a four-year plan for all of their activities this quadrelmium, with the goal of representing the rights and interests of National Team members and of all gymnasts. Peter Kormarul. has earned the respect of the athletes and coaches The seven vo ting members of the Board of Directors who serve involved in our National Team program. As the United States 1976 on the AAC are elected by the Senior National Team members on Olympic Bronze Medalist, Peter has demonstrated his personal a staggered basis, with each Athlete Director serving a four year understanding of what it takes to be a champion athlete. (OVER STORY
~mnas
Dr. P. Kevin Elko and Debbie Yohman TV sportscasters love to talk about "The Zone," that mysterious place top gymnasts go while they're performing amazing feats. It's not really that much of a mystery, though; we've all been there. For most of us, it probably happened while we were driving. When we suddenly snapped to, we realized that for the previous five, 10, or 15 minutes, we'd been driving, but our mind had been totally engrossed with something else. Could we get there again at will? And can gymnasts do the same? The answer is probably, if we have a coach showing us the way. The zone is an altered state of 路 mind and body that gymnasts reach just before and during their top performances. You have been in the zone when you have had the indepth discussions with friends, or when taking an evening stroll or drive when time disappeared. You were in the zone then. Or maybe you've been listening to music or reading a really good book and been totally absorbed. That, too, counts as a visit to the zone. We all have been there but peak performing gymnasts dwell there. This is where the coach fits in. If he or she can create an atmosphere that will help their gymnasts find
the zone, the rewards can be enormous: your gymnasts might be perfect on the beam, stick bar routines, or score a perfect 10 on the vault. The coach can be the postman for the zone. It's an easy job in some cases. Diver Greg Louganis, who in the 1988 Olympics was able to come back and enter the zone to win his gold medal after he hit his head on the diving board, overcame a realistic fear that an errant dive could possibly cost him his life. Heisman trophy running back Tony Dorsett said he knew where defenders were when he ran the football without

even seeing them. Somehow his feet knew where defenders were and ran away from them. Superbowl MVP Joe Montana would get so deeply into the zone that he would literally
forget what play was called two and three downs previous. The coach simply stays out of the way in these cases. Whatever it takes to get into the zone, in these cases the athlete has it. But for every athlete like that, there are dozens of others who struggle to get to their zone on a consistent basis. The very best thing a coach can do to help those players is to find out exactly what the zone is and how peak performers get there. I did, though it took years of trying through observation and interviewing peak performers, and plenty of frustrating dead ends. I started with the idea that only top gymnasts could find the zone. It must be some special place, I surmised, found through their physical training and the fact that they are

(OVER STORY
performers. I had it backwards . Athletes first find the zone, then find peak performances. If you ever had a chance to ask a gymnast after an incredible p erformance what they were thinking I guarantee they answered it with one word. "NOTHING." " My mind was blank." "It was like something was instructing m e other than m y mind." "Whatever that something was I just released m yself to it."
Finding the Zone For the p eak performing gymnasts, finding the zone first requires relaxing every part of the body. Most people seldom experience this state, because their thoughts, especially the judgmental ones, get in the way. For some, it might be the thought that they're too slow, uncoordinated, or weak. Others might start thinking about that bit of criticism their coach threw at them earlier in the day. These thoughts have GOT to go, or the zone w ill be impossible to find. Here's a hint: Instruct the athlete to sit quietly, in a quiet place, and listen to his or her breathing. Just sit and learn to enter a calm state and allow the mind to go quiet. It is the ability to create a quiet mind that allows one to go into the zon e. The mind that is blank can perform in the zone: just sit, listen to their breathing and "blank" their mind. That is all. Only after they have calmed down and are starting to slip into a "blank mind" state, can they see themselves p erforming on the field, in an optimal way, with the mind completely focused on w hat they are doing. No judgmental thoughts, just performin g. The gymnast' s body knows w here to go without being told. The body w ill go on flow and the mind on automatic pilot. The
body, in the visualization knows w here to run, when to jump, how to perform on the beam. Performance is perfect. Some gymnas ts ma y find an increased awareness and an ability to flow with the visualization. They
He III ha,e ~eel there but
pelh pelftJrml~g gqm~lsls dlel~ there., will be able to blank their mind of any thoughts and perform as in a dream. They have found the zone. Others m ay struggle. Some gymnas ts may be too "h yped-up." This is an area that the accomplished gymnasts are aware of. The art of gymnastics demands the gymnasts be able to alter their arousal level. For example the vault requires the gymnast to "psych-up" to perform well. The gymnast needs to self-talk to get the blood flowing. Self state-
m ents like: "Here we go," "Lets do it," "All we got," are thoughts that can pump up the gymn ast. Also, more aggressive breathing can h elp. Conversely, the beam requires the gymnast to bring arousal level way dow n . Falls are often attributed to athletes bein g too high and unfocused. The same technique is successful. Self-talk statements like: "Focus," "On e step at a time,," "Quiet mind," are all effective. Slowing and making the breathing d eeper is another technique that is effective in lowering arou sal for this event. Practicing these techniques with visualization as well as doing them "in vivo" during the m eet w ill greatly assist the gymnast.
Manufacturing The Zone Obviously a coach cannot get all their gymnasts into the zone every time. If that occurred the team would win every meet. We all know that doesn't happen. But we can place the gymnasts in position to enter the zone as opposed to work. ing against it h appening. We can allow the gymnasts to develop mental training habits to help produce this zone state. We, as champion coaches, can train ourselves to be disciplined in our interactions with athletes to increase the probability of this occurring. If we do these things the zone w ill not occur in our gymn asts in every meet, but it w ill occur m ore frequently. 1997 CONGRESS
ATHLETE WELLNESS COACHES COURSE Nancy Marshall, USA Gymnastics Athlete Well ness Program Manager Delwel; August 13
T
~e At~lete ~elln~ss
Coaches Course will be held In conjunction wIth the 1997 USA Gymnastics Congress in Denver, August 13.
Background In Novembel~ 1995, the Board of Directors of USA Gymnastics unanimously accepted the recommendations of the Task Force on the USA Gymnastics Response to the Female Athlete Triad. With this action, the Board made a commitment to implement those recomm endations by funding the USA Gymnastics Athlete Wellness Program. In creating this program, USA Gymnastics is taking a leading role in developing safeguards to balance some of the stresses elite athletes face.
AWP Coaches Course Description The pilot Athlete Wellness Program Coaches Course was conducted prior to the annual USA Gymnastics Congress and Olympic Trials in Boston, June 27, 1996. The curriculum for this course was developed by Dr. Joan Duda (artistic national team sport psychologist), Dr. Gloria Balague (rhythmic national team sport psychologist), and Dr. Dan Benardot (national team nutritionist) . Over 75 men's, women's and rhythmic N ational Board members, Regional and State Chairmen, and National Safety Certifiers participated in the 1996 course and subsequent evaluation process. Their feedback is critical to the development of the course which will eventually be offered to the general membership through national and regional con gresses and regional symposiums.
Stress-How to identify and manage stress in the athletic environment. Child Development-Emotional and physical makeup of the adolescent as it relates to involvement in gymnastics. ~"n Capelalli and Steve Whitlock How to survive the summer is a topic among gym owners. Summer time has been the scourge of the gymnastics community since they started renting private facilities. Gymnasts are out of school and away from their normal routines. Families take vacations. Since they are already going to miss a number gym classes, the vacation is expensive, and nothing is really happening in the gym-they decide to save money and skip gym for July or August.

How do you counteract this? For team gymnasts, program directors need to remind parents that summer is a critical time to train and prepare for the upcoming fall season. While this is quite true for athletes in the competitive program, it is even more difficult to sell to the majority of the program participants-the recreational class students. Recreational gymnasts need d ifferent reasons than team gymnasts to stay active during the summer. Remember not all recreational gymnasts have the desire or the ability to work at the team level, but they still love the sport. This is where a General Gymnastics (GG) program can help gymnastics clubs maintain enrollment during the lean summer months. In GG, students are involved in programs that emphasizes health, fun, and fitness benefits of gymnastics participation rather than preparation for gymnastics competitions. The highlight for GG participants is usually an exhibition, performance, or display rather than a meet. This activity appeals to a broad range of ages (children to seniors) and abilities (begilmer to elite). The display is generally choreographed to music, lasts from 8-30 minutes, and involves 10 or more performers in the group . Some display groups can have several hundred performers! The gymnastics activities performed by the group are varied-apparatus gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, aerobics, gymnastics games, Acro-sport, dance, and so on.

The members of the Fallbrook Gymnastics Club Performance Team range in age from 5 to 61. One of their most popular routines is performed to the music "Cotton Eyed Joe" and utilizes gymnastics components including tumbling, Acro-sport, rhythmic, mini-tramp, and dance. To combat the "summer enrollment blues," Fallbrook plans a major performance for the end of summer or early fall. Students are informed that they will participate in special workouts and rehearsals on the routines for this performance. Last year, they started working on the routine for our participation in the 1996 National GymFest that was held at Disneyland in December. They experienced an increase in income from the previous summer of over 11 percent (June, July, and August). The special GG training brought a lot the gymnasts back early from vacation and kept a number of families in the gym instead of taking a month off. For the summer of 1997, they have two major performances: the National GymFest at Walt Disney World, August 22-27; and a pre-game performance at a major league baseball game. For the pre-game performance, They will combine with another local club that does GG, Charter Oaks Gymnastics. Fallbrook selected these two activities because the cost of the trip to Florida would be fairly expensive- the lower cost pre-game performance will be a nice alternative that appeals to a larger number of gymnasts. For the first time, this they will be trying a flex schedule. Instead of a monthly enrollment period, we are going to offer a plan where participants can enroll for a 6, 7, 8, or 9 week session. The price will vary depending on the total number of weeks a family enrolls-with the greatest value for the family who enrolls for the full summer. This suggestion is from Jeff Metzger (Queen City Gymnastics Center).

What can you use as your m.ajor GG event? This is already planned for you . The 1997 National GymFest in Orlando at Walt Disney World, August 24-27. This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for clubs with performance groups. The facility will be the new Fieldhouse at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex. It is truly spectacular. Activities include Opening Ceremony, Welcome Party, GG workshops and clinics, two performances of your group routine, and the Gala. Plus time to visit the Magic Kingdom速, Epcot速, or Disney's MGM Studios速. You can also plan a local event. If you have a m ajor or minor league sports franchise in your town you can perform at a pre-game or half time. Amusement parks also make a great performance location and many have youth performance programs. County and state fairs often provide opportunities to do GG displays. These venues allow your club be seen by members in your community w ho w ill be interested in joining your program. Examine the opportunities in your town and city to find locations. Ask your students and their parents where they would like to perform. Be creative. With a GG program you can chase away those summer enrollment blues. For clubs in the Southern California area, the summer of 1997 is a perfect time to starting a Performance Team, because during the spring of 1998, Southern California will be the first area in the U.S. to establish a GG season utilizing several different amusement parks as the venues. :F"o~ mo~e I:nfo~matio:n If you are interested in learning more about GG, you can visit the GG pages on USA Gymnastics Online or contact Dean Capelotti or Steve Whitlock.

• WHEN ARE THEY EFFECTIVE? For the 1997-1998 through the 2000-2001 competitive seasons. • WHO SHOULD HAVE THESE MATERIALS? If you are coaching or judging in women's gymnastics in the U. S., you should have these definitive materials.
·
• WHEN WILL COMPULSORY MATERIALS BE AVAILABLE? Attendees of the J.O. Compulsory Workshops will be able to purchase materials (limited quantities) at the workshops at discounted rates. Materials ordered by those NOT attending the workshops will be mailed approximately two weeks after the workshops.

It was agreed that the following positions would be beneficial fo r the
USA's successful participation in the World Gymnaestrada: Delega tion Leader Assistant Delegation Leader Protocol Officer Public Relations Officer (information and communications) Mar keting/ Sponsorshi p /Sales Officer Travel/ Lodging Manager Equipment and Logistics Manager Schools Coordinator Large Group Performance Coordinator (GG Na tional Choreographer) Assistant Group Performance Coordinator FIG Gala Coordinator ational Evening Coordinator Opening/ Closing Ceremony Coordinator It was agreed that a "Position Available" advertisement be published and distributed for the Assistant Large Group Performance Coordinator. This would be necessary for the logistics of routine development and to coordinate w ith the National Choreographer. FIG World Gymnaestrada Youth Camp The regulations for this aspect include provisions for one coach and 12 participants age 12-18, with the possibility of one additional coach . Participants in the WG Youth Camp follow their own program of activities separate from the Gymnaestrada performances. Discussion followed regarding the logistics of selection, supervision, and responsibilities. Whitlock, with input from Nora Campbell, suggested that participants be selected in pairs. It was agreed that selection would be accomplished through an application process. Whitlock was assigned to develop an application for distribution and publication. Discussion fo llowed regarding solicitation of participants from special groups including the Na tional Gymnas tics Founda tion; Park and Recreation De partments; Youth Sport Associations; youth "at-risk" groups, as well as participants from main stream clubs w ith GG programs. It was agreed that applicants should be invited to attend the 1998 Na tional GymFest. A special course of activities and seminars would be d eveloped to educate the group on General Gymnas tics and the World Gymnaestrada. This would also give the GGAP an opportunity to meet and interview the applicants. Large Group " B" Performance The GGAP re-affirmed its commitment to present a Large Group "B" Performance at the 11th World Gymnaestrada in Goteborg, Sweden. Discussion follow ed regarding our experience w ith the large group performance at the 1996 lationa l GymFest. It was noted that a va ri ety of issues caused difficulty with the presentation: developmental timeframe; scheduling at the event; miscommunication and misunderstanding by group leaders; lack of co mmunication with the Na tion al Choreographer. It was agreed that a long-term contract be developed w ith the National Choreographer. Terms and conditions of the contract wi ll include specific responsibilities throughout the development of the routine and its perfonnance at the 11 th World Gy mnaestrada. Moskovitz was assigned to
contact Paula Lord, ational GG Choreogra pher, for the purpose of contract development. VI. GG Governance USA Gymnastics Members hip - General Gymnastics Category Whi tlock shared "proof sheets" of the new USAG Membership fo rms, which included the General Gymnastics ca tegory. Begimting w ith the Membership Enrollment Forms for the 1997-1998 season, Athlete "Team" members will be able to designate participation in Women's Artistic, Men's Artistic, Rhythmic Gymnastics, and General Gymnastics categories. For athletes participating in more than one ca tegory (e.g., Women's Artistic and General Gymnastics), this will NOT require an additional fee. Likewise, a General Gymnastics category will be added for USA Gymnas tic s Instructor and Professional members to indicate their participation and interes t in Women's Artistic, Men's Artistic, Rhythmic Gymnas tics, and General GYIlmastics ca tegories. As in the past, USAG Instructor and Professional members will be required to pay an additional fee for "add-on" ca tegories. The Panel expressed its thanks to the USA Gymnastics Exec uti ve Committee for its foresight and commitment to developing programs, including General Gymnastics. Discussion followed regarding the initiation of mandatory membership for participation in General Gymnastics events. The Panel expressed its concern wi th Sanctioned events in that all partici pants including Professional Members are part of the displays; who is ac tually covered under the Sanction's insurance program ? Moskovitz was assigned to contact K & K Insurance to discuss the issue. General Gymnastics Governance in the USA Whitlock discussed current developments and proposals being considered by the FIG. Discussion followed regarding the development of several sport areas including: trampoline, tumbling, AcroSport, sport aerobics, and competitive general gymnas tics. It was agreed that the GGAP proceed with its work along the lines of cur-
rent USA Gymnas tics programs and policies. Discussion followed regard ing the potential of " Develop ment Directors" for General Gymnastics in the USA. The concept included a variety of fund ing m echanisms, responsibilities, and support structures. Whitlock noted that this type of position is included in other countries. Moskovitz noted the need to follow the progress of GG Membership. The process of development may take several years as GG member numbers grow and membership can be required for participation at the national level. A variety of national, regional and local governance structures were discussed under the leadership of a proposed USA Gy mnastics General Gymnastics Program Committee (GGPC).
NOTE: It should be /loted that the USA Gymnastics structure does not ClIrrentIy provide for a GGPe.
