Blaine, who is coached by Ron Brant and V-ltaly Marinitch, is the first modem-day gymnast competing on behalf of USA Gymnastics to win five consecutive titles. In the 1930's George Wheeler won five consecutive titles. U.S. gymnast Makoto Sakamoto won six all-around titles throughout the 1960's, but not consecutively, while Alfred Jochim won seven all-around titles in the 1920's through 1930's. These men competed for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU); prior to the formation of USA Gymnastics, the governing body for the sport. Regarding his win Blaine said, All in all it was a good competition, but I still have two more competitions to go, this is only 40 percent of the score to determine the Olympic Team. I know there are some things I can clean up. Right now I'm focused on what lies ahead and I think our team has a lot of potentiaL" U
Sean Townsend, 21, challenged Wilson for the title, only .5 tenths behind after three rotations, but fell on pommel horse, scoring only an 8.50. Townsend, who trains at Team Texaco-Houston, finished second overall with a combined score of 113.975. He also took second on vault using his handspring double front and scoring 9.725. He is coach by Kevin Mazeika. "I'm always nervous going into these events. My strategy this time was to go out there and be in my own world, and for the most part it worked." When asked if he knew he was on Blaine's heels at one point Sean said, "I didn't look at the scores all night because when you think you're getting close to Blaine he always pulls away. That guy doesn't ever miss. He's a guy we need on ourteam." Finishing in third place was Paul Hamm, 17, from Waukesha, Wis. and Team Texaco-Swiss Turners, with a combined score of 112.925. Paul said, "This has been a dream of ours (referring to his brother Morgan and coach Stacy Malone) to make the Olympics. It was really interesting atfirst competing against Blaine and John. If we don't make itthis year than there's still the future. At Championships I just wanted to make it into the top four and I'm happy I accomplished my goaL" Twin brother Morgan Hamm finished eighth in the overall rankings with a score of 110.625 and tied for second on floor with Fredric Umali from Top Flight Gymnastics, scoring 9.60. When asked what it's like to compete with your brother, Paul said, "It helps having a brother pushing you through the competition. We push each other in the gym and that makes us so much better." Stephen McCain, 26, from Team Texaco-Houston was third after preliminaries and finished the competition in fourth with 112.300. He also took second on pommel horse with a 9.625. McCain said, "Overall I was very pleased with my performance, and now I'm ready to move on to the next set. This is fuel to the fire to keep me on my toes for Trials. I like to keep the pressure on myself, and I just wanted to get this meet under my belt." McCain was followed by two-time Olympian John Roethlisberger, 30, from Team Texaco-Minnesota Gophers with 111.275. Roethlisberger won pommel horse and took third on vault during the preliminary competition that also served as event finals, but ironically he fell on pommel horse during the finals competition. "I can't do worse than I did in this event, and I still ended up fifth. It's crazy, I haven't fallen off the pommel horse in competition since 1996, and suddenly tonight I was standing next to the horse. Maybe I was too relaxed; maybe I was a little tired. I always want to be the best gymnast out there, but it just hasn't been there so I try to pick it up in other areas like leadership. It means a lotto me when guys see that and comment on it" Ohio State's Jamie Nat&liefinished sixth with a score of 111.025 and tied for first on high bar with Trent Wells from Team Texaco-California, both scoring 9.650. Brett McClure grabbed the bronze medal on high bar scoring 9.60 and finished seventh in the all-around with a 110.725. McClure from Team Texaco-USOTC was fifth all-around after preliminary competition but had troubles on floor, which dropped him down to seventh after finals. Wells, Justin Toman and Wilson swept the parallel bars event scoring 9.850, 9.70 and 9.60, respectively. Wells finished 10th in the all-around and Toman took 12th, both earning spots in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Gymnastics. Guard Young from Team Texaco-Provo took ninth. Guard stayed in that position after both preliminary and finals competition. While Jay Thornton from Team Texaco-USOTC moved up two spots from 13th after preliminaries to 11th all-around in the finals. BYU's eortney Bramwell showed a nice rings routine scoring 9.85 and taking third during event finals. Also earning a spot to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials due to their all-around standings were Jim Foody from Team Texaco-USOTC in 13th and Raj Bhavsar from Ohio State in 14th. Mike Dutka from Team Texaco-Houston will also advance to the Olympic Trials due to his four-eventtotaL According to the Selection Procedures, the top two five-event total and top two four-event total finishers (using combined scores from preliminaries and finals) who are not among the top 14 allaround finishers will also qualify for the Olympic Trials as long as their five-event totals or four-event totals are equal to or greater than the lowest five-event or four-event totals from among the 14 top all-around finishers.
"Vault isn't one of my strongest events,"
said Ray. "I was a little nervous, but I felt confident. I knew I wanted to be aggressive; I wanted to just go after it no matter what. These Championships have been a real dream of mine, especially since these are my last Championships."
National Team Coordinator Bela Karolyi said, "This was the most disputed National Championship ever. There was a big difference from the World Championships, it was like the sky and the earth." Jamie Dantzscher from Gliders in Covina, Calif., led the event after two rounds of preliminary competition and finished third with a score of 75.70.
When asked how it felt to end the competition on beam, Jamie said, "Beam has always been the most challenging event for me, so ending on beam was scary. I was relieved Ray, who has signed with the University of when it was over. Coach Donna Strauss said, BI'm extremely pleased with Kristal's focus at this competition. We lost eight weeks in the spring with Kristal due to a stress fracture in her elbow. We were very cautious with her. I'm glad she was able to come in and do what she needed to do." Kristal is a freshman and says floor is her favorite event Her mother, aunts and grandmother all coach gymnastics and Kristal began the sport when she was 2 years old.
Earning the silver medal was Terin Humphrey of Blue Springs, Mo., and Great American Gymnastics Express, scoring 73.937. Humphrey, who turned 14 just after the event on August 14, maintained a solid second throughout the entire competition and showed her consistency on all four events. She has certainly increased her difficulty and consistency, moving from 13th place at last year's eventto wining the silver medal this year. Coach AI Fong said, "We're right on track. Our goal was to be in the top five. We wantto take our time with Terin because there is no rush. We're a big supporter of the age group program and we feel that's where she's learned howto compete." He added, "Terin's strong on all four events. She has many skills so our biggest challenge as coaches was to pick the right skills for her, the skills she could hit consistently every time.n Fourteen-year-old Tabitha Vim from Irvine, Calif., and training at Gliders, claimed the bronze medal with a score of 72.612. She scored a 9.475 on floor to stay in third, moving up from fifth place after the preliminary round of competition. Tabitha also earned the gold medal on floor, scoring a 9.650 during the event finals competition. Tabitha performed a great triple full twist and shows beautiful dance throughout her routine. Brown's Gymnastics' Carly Patterson, made the national team for her first time and finished an impressive fourth in the all-around with a score of 72.375. Patterson, who trains in Houston, earned the silver medal on beam scoring a 9.50 to Uzelac's 9.55. She showed a dynamic flip flop, flip flop, double tuck dismount This 12-year-old moved from seventh all-around after preliminaries up to fourth, thanks to her increased vault, bars and floor scores during the finals event continued on page 34

Thornton competed in the senior division and attempted to earn a spot on the Men's Senior National Team. He finished 20th all-around, missing the senior team by six spots. However, his score of 52.250 during the preliminary round of competition among the seniors placed him in first position among the juniors, making him the Junior National Champion in the 16-18 year old division. Seventeen-year-old Thornton said, "I was a little disappointed that I didn't make the Senior National Team. I thought I could have done better. I had some rough areas, but it feels good to win the junior title. I'm looking forward to following in my teammate Sean Townsend's footsteps. Sean won the junior title in 1997 and placed fourth among the seniors in 1998." David Henderson from Houston Gymnastics Academy led the allaround after the junior competition with a score of 50.450, but ended up in second place behind Thornton after the senior men's competition was finalized.

GYMNASTICS EXCELLENCE
USA GVMN
By Kathy Feldmann and Jerry Nelson
The USA GYMNASTICS CONGRESS took place in Boston, August 17-20, in conjunction with the Olympic Trials. Congress is an annual educational opportunity for coaches, judges, club owners, instructors and other gymnastics professionals and moves from city to city each year. This year was one of the biggest and best in memory! There were 157 exciting lectures covering all disciplines and levels. A record 2,400 individuals attended this year's event and the inaugural Business Conference was a sell out as well. Another highlight to Congress was the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner, which paid tribute to the new Hall of Fame inductees including Brandy Johnson, Phoebe Mills, Avis Tieber Jamieson, Audrey Schweyer, the coaching team of Bela and Martha Karolyi, and the Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement award earned by Don Robinson . The Dance Party was also a big success, with lots of music, dancing, food, drinks and socializing!

Hopefully your coach has some sort of mental training exercises incorporated into your workouts. Visualizing a good beam performance, setting yearly goals, practicing relaxation techniques are all examples of -effective training tools that help gymnasts rise above competitive pressure and achieve excellence. While you may have specific mental conditiOning exercises you do in the gym, there are lots of creative activities you can do at home and throughout everyday life, to sharpen your ability to concentrate.
Following are some suggestions from sport psychologist Dr. Alison Arnold and others • Periodically, ask what your goal is for for ways to reinforce the-six main mental--~ the workout or competition~Evaluate-if--~ skills being practiced in the gym. you are reaching those goals. Remember, hard work, tenacity, and CONC£NTRi-\1'ION TRAINING overcoming obstacles are all victories • Play "concentration" the card game. worth celebrating. • Practice memorization. Introducing the Newest Grip on the Bars! (j)
Designed and manufactured with assistance from National Team Coaches, the Just Right by Gibson is the newest idea in Ladies Uneven Bar Grips. The Just Right is cut slightly narrower for great contact with the bar and reduces side to side rolling of the grip for athletes with smaller hands The single buckle design assures a firm, tight fit at the wrist, and eliminates the constant adjustment necessary with velcro strap grips.

TEN. 0
CLASSIC
501 BLUES
Just imagine grip s that fit with the comfort of you r o ldest, most faded j eans-from the first swing. Co nsider baby suede padding , NEW SOFT SWING blue foam insert for those who need a littl e extra softness, a distinctive wrist strap and you have a 501 BLUE . Most gymnasts want a grip that's soft and easy to break in . They also wa nt them to be durable . The 50 1 does this better than any other grip on the market AND they do it w ith sty le and good pricing .
The TEN. 0 CLASSIC is the mo st durab le grip on the market . We know - o ur customers talk. Of course , it takes longer to break in CLASSIC grips because of th e low stretc h factor of the heavy duty leather. In fact, in recent independent laborato ry tests the TEN . 0 classic leather was compared to the leather in other popular gri ps and was found to withstand 18%-greater pulling-stress. - If you are a hard training, big trick gymnast who doesn't like her grips to stretch or doesn't like to buy grips frequently we recommend using THE CLASSICS . Literally thousands of gymnasts do! You wi ll love the baby suede padding , the custom designed webbing for a fresh new look, an d the new soft swing insert.
