CHARMS EARRINGS

&

Nine months ago I wrote about the promise of change and the arrival of the new Millennium. And indeed events of the past few months alone have proven this to be an extraordinary time for USA Gymnastics and our gymnasts and clubs throughout the country. Robert V. Colarossi President of USA Gymnastics

We have seen remarkable levels of achievement in practically every area of USA Gymnastics' operation. We are as

strong financially as we have ever been in the organization's history. Our membership munbers are at all-time highs. We had record participation in our Annual Congress. We are seeing more and more national broadcast outlets recognizing the excitement and value of our events, and we are pleased to welcome Fox Family Channel as our newest broadcast partner. But the one area in which I remain most excited is the opportunity provided to all of us through the arrival of exciting new technologies. Six months ago we signed an agreement with kinzan.com to provide dedicated web-sites to every one of our USA Gymnastics Member Clubs. At this year's annual Congress I was pleased to have the opportunity to introduce this technology to our membership. We are now seeing how the Internet will provide an enhanced level of functionality and productivity for all of us. From membership and merchandising development to information provision and access to USA Gymnastics proprietary content (lesson plans, training tips, PR opportunities, etc.) we are putting tremendous resources behind this effort to help all of you achieve your gymnastics goals. Finally, allow me to take a moment to address our elite program and the performance of our men's and women's Olympic team at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. I am intrigued at the prevailing conception that our performance did not measure up to expectations. The actual reality is quite different. The m en finished one place ahead of their performance at the 1999 World Championships, and while we would certainly have hoped for more, the strong routines of the Hamm brothers provided significant signs of hope for the future. Blaine Wilson posted the highest finish by an American male in a non-boycotted Olympics since 1932. On the women's side our team finished sixth at the 1999 World Championships, a placing I described at the time as very disappointing. At that point, it was unclear whether or not we even had a realistic chance of qualifying for the team finals in Sydney. With that in mind, immediately after the World's we identified a program that would maximize our chances for Olympic success. The end result is that we delivered a team performance of which we should all be proud. Fourth in the world represents an outstanding accomplishment for this team, and sets a benchmark from which our 2004 team will grow. The 1996 team gold was certainly the high point of Olympic achievement for our organization, but remember that it was our firs t and as such remains the standard to which we continue to strive as we look towards Athens and 2004. So as we proceed together towards the end of the year, I encourage everyone in the USA Gymnastics family to use our teams as an example and continue to seek improvement. Only by recognizing our weaknesses and addressing them forthrightly and directly can we hope to build upon the successes of the past and create new successes for the future. And, as always, feel free to contact any of us here at USA Gymnastics if there is anything further we can do to help you achieve your gymnastics dreams. That is a mission we all share. USA

choreograph thoughts as it is to choreograph a floor or beam routine. We know that the biggest cause of negative performance or balking is out of control thinking. You need disciplined thoughts to increase consistency and concentration. Constructing positive mental choreography is one of the first things you can do to create mental toughness. There are three types of thoughts that you want to use in mental choreography. The three types are Mechanical Statements-reminds you of technique (lift chest, heel drive, etc.) Statements-pumps you up or relaxes you (go, push, relax, etc.) Self-Esteem Statements-helps with confidence. (I can do it, this is easy, etc.) Use these statements to choreograph your routines and individual tricks as well.

It's very simple. You compete how you train. IF you train well, you compete well. It's not about who's lucky, It's about who's prepared.

Exercise: Mental Choreography

It's that time of year again. Time to tighten up your grips, put that ~ first half with the second half, stick those dismounts, and get ready to shine! It's meet season. This article will give you five basic steps to get your mind ready for competition. These exercises will help you tighten your mind to perform your best!

the Vision It is very unp'brtantym:t-ereate e Vlsm fth gymnast you want to be in competition. This is your goal when you are getting ready to compete. What do you look like? How are you acting in the gym? What do you do on a good day? A bad day? How focused and aggressive are you during workout and competitions? I call this your "Vision" with a capital "v." It is your perfect image of how you want to compete. Here are some examples or words other gymnasts have used to describe their vision: motivated, fun, aggressive, doubtless, positive, confident, and consistent. Everything in the world starts with a vision. Remind yourself of your vision every day.

On a big piece of paper, write out each of your routines. For Aoor and beam, draw your pattern and write the skills you are doing on the ~ pattern line. Then, above the line, write out every thought you want to be thinking during your routine. For uneven bars, parallel bars, high bar, rings, and pommel horse, write a list of your skills and the thoughts you want to be thinking on each skill. For vault, write what you are thinking before you run , during your run , and during your vault. You may not have mental choreography during every skill. Practice your mental choreography by doing mental "walk throughs" until it comes automaticall~.:.... . _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __

Step #3: Mental Rehearsal Schedule Consistent visualization 's . portan part of any mental toughness-training program. Visualizing yourself doing perfect routines helps build confidence and consistency. The most important by-product of mental rehearsal is the pairing of cue words (Mental Choreography) to perfect performance. When you do mental rehearsal, it's important to see yourself with as much detail as possible. Try to use all five senses. The closer you can simulate competition in your mind, the more you will be mentally prepared. A mental rehearsal schedule can be done at any time during the day, although most find it more helpful before they go to bed at night.

Exercise: Mental Rehearsal Schedule Write each day of the week on a piece of

paper and create your mental rehearsal schedule. Include some skills and some routines. Be sure to give yourself at least one night off. The night before a competition visualize each of your routines with all the mental choreography included . Don't give yourself too many routines. all of your routines. The you say in your head are your Mental Choreography. Remember, out of control tlunking leads to out of control performance. Mental choreography is your key to confident, consistent routines. When you use cue words throughout your routines, your mind stays focused leaving no room for negative thoughts. It is just as important to

choreograph two people before you compete, one person before you compete, while you are waiting for the judge, and right before you start your routine. Elements in your pre-competition ritual could include visualization, positive self-talk, and breathing. Practice your pre-competition ritual in workout at least one week before the meet.

mind and pull it back when it gets off track is a skill. Learn how to bring your mind back to "one point" first by identifying what your one point feels like. What do you feel like when you are totally doubtless in competition? Visualize yourself on your one-point. Then, practice bringing yourself back to one-point whenever you lose focus. Bring yourself back with a word and a breath. This is called your "one-point anchor." It is the cue that brings your mind back to focus whenever you feel distracted, frustrated, nervous, or upset. Practice getting back to one-point by visualizing a bad day, and see yourself tum it around in your mind by changing your thinking. Practice turning negative thoughts around in workout. This will train your mind to change negative thoughts before competition.

Exercise: The One-Point Create your one-point anchor. It could be as simple as a breath and a phrase. For example, "Stop, breathe, make it happen" or "Breathe, relax, back to one-point." Practice this in the gym whenever ou feel out of your zone.

Exercise: Pre-Competition Ritual On a piece of paper, write out your pre-competition ritual for every event. Be sure to include two people before you compete, one person before you compete, while you are waiting for the judge, and before you start your routine.

These tools will help you feel confident and train your mind to compete your best. Remember, the key on competition day is letting go and having fun. On the day of the meet, know you have prepared as much as you can and go into the meet with confidence and excitement. You've worked hard, now is the time to make it happen. Good luck, and most importantly, have fun. \

It is crucial you ar en 0 JUs pnor to competition. Too many times fear, stress, and pressure shake up your confidence right before the judge raises his or her hand. Your goal is to get yourself into your Ideal Vision State (which means you feel confident, focused, excited, and ready to hit your routines) . Your precompetition ritual is what you are saying and doing as you prepare to compete. It's important to

There are 50 athletes who make up the 1999-2000 Junior Development Team. The top 25 gymnasts from this team, along with their cooches, were invited to the 2000 Future Stars Camp.

, c

The camp featured activities and educational experiences in the following areas: • Basic skill refinement

NOTICE TO MEMBERSHIP

• Body position and presentation training • Optional skill development • Strength training • Strength and Aexibility assessment

The following Membership Statement has been adopted by the Board of - _" lJ,rectors of USA Gymnastics:

Membership in USA Gymnastics is a privilege granted by USA Gymnastics. rhat privilege can be withdrawn by USA Gymnastics at any time where a member's conduct is determined to be inconsistent with the best interest of the sporl of gymnastics and of the athletes we are servicing. The following former professional members have been terminated or have a lifetime ban with USA Gymnastics and/or will not be allowed to renew their membership:

• Team building activities • New skills demonstration day • Lectures from various speakers All of the athletes and coaches worked tremendously hard to make the most of all the opportunities that the 2000 Future Stars Camp had to offer. The energy level for the entire camp was very high, which resulted in a great deal of progress made by the athletes. The talent level of this group of athletes is very high and was certainly reAected by the types of skills and accomplishments demonstrated at the camp. The future of men's gymnastics in the United States is bright indeed.

Introducing the Newest Grip on the Bars! Designed and manufactured with assistance from National Team Coaches, the Just Right by Gibson is the newest idea in Ladies Uneven Bar Grips. The Just Right is cut slightly narrower for great contact with the bar and reduces side to side rolling of the grip for athletes with smaller hands The single buckle design assures a firm, tight fit at the wrist, and eliminates the constant adjustment necessary with velcro strap grips.

Womens Olympic All-Around continued from page 26 When asked if there was one moment you could take back, what would it be, Chow said, "I guess the first day, because I would have liked to make it into event finals." Regarding the future, Chow added, "I'll probably do some professional things in gymnastics and I'm probably going to go back to school in January. I'll major in biology. I have a couple more years left until medical schooL" Maloney said, "There were ups and downs but overall, I was happy. The high point during all-around finals was hitting my bar routine. The whole experience has been so exciting." Two days after the all-around competition it was announced that Raducan was stripped of her all-around gold medal because of a positive drug test. Raducan tested positive for the stimulant pseudoephedrine-an ingredient found in cold medicine which was prescribed to her by her team doctor. This pushed Simona Amanar into first, Maria Olaru into second and made history for China's Liu Xuan who became the first Chinese woman ever to win three gymnastics medals at the Olympics. Liu was awarded the all-around bronze, the first all-around medal ever won by a Chinese woman.

During vault finals, eighteen-year-old Zamolodtchikova, who was given the chance to compete by her teammate Khorkina, grabbed the gold scoring 9.731 followed by Raducan in second (9 .693) and Lobazniouk in third (9.674). Khorkina said, "I gave Elena the opportunity to win the gold because I had a feeling inside she'd win. " Khorkina, Zamolodtchikova and Lobazniouk all qualified to vault finals from Russia but only two athletes per country are allowed to compete in each event, and since Zamolodtchikova's score was lower she was unable to compete. Khorkina gave her the chance she needed. Khorkina was given her chance on bars and she was golden scoring 9.862 and winning her first gold medal at the 2000 Games. China's Ling Jie and Yang Yun were second and third scoring 9.837 and 9.787, respectively. USA's only event finalist Ray qualified to beam finals but scored only a 9.387 and finished eighth. Ray said , "I didn't get my start value because I didn't connect one of my bonus connections, other than that it felt pretty good. She added, "I was nervous today. I've been in the gym working out by myself which was harder than with the team, but I tried to keep my head up. I've had a lot of support from all the coaches. " China's Liu Xuan, 21, came out of retirement for the Sydney Games and claimed her first medal in a major international competition with a victory on the beam, scoring 9.825. Only Liu's victory prevented a gold medal sweep of the apparatus finals by the Russians, who won seven of the 12 medals. Russia's Ekaterina Lobazniouk took second with a 9.787 and Elena Produnova earned third with a score of 9.775. Zamolodtchikova performed a powerful and dazzling floor exercise that scored a winning mark of 9.850. She finished the Games with two golds and a silver. "I believe I have more opportunities in this sport," said Zamolodtchikova. "I will continue to train and try to obtain better results. With the new rules I will get even better scores. " Khorkina, 21, earned the silver medal on floor behind her younger teammate scoring 9.812 while Amanar finished third with a 9.712.
