Robert V. Colarossi President of USA Gymnastics At the time of print, I just learned that the University of Massachusetts-Amherst is contemplating dropping its men's and women' s gymnastics programs. Collegiate programs are a crucial part of the success of gymnastics in America. By example, half of the 2000 U.s. Olympic gymnasts have ties to collegiate gymnastics. With nearly four million children involved in our sport, more than 4,800 gymnastics clubs across America, and the high academic achievement status that collegiate gymnasts have earned, I urge the University of Massachusetts-Amherst to continue its long-standing and successful gymnastics program. Please help support our effort to retain collegiate gymnastics at UMASS by taking the time to write to the Chancellor and President of the university at the addresses below. Also, please check our web site at www.usa-gymnastics.orgicollege/umass.htmI for more information. University of Massachusetts-Amherst Ms. Marcellette G. I'm very pleased to welcome Sports Acrobatics to USA Gymnastics. Sports Aero joined USA Gymnastics in January 2002 and is an official discipline with the FIG. Our new partnership is off to a great start and I look forward to much success from the program. Alexa Hukari joined USA Gymnastics as the interim Senior Program Director. Alexa is no stranger to the sport as she was the sports acrobatics senior national champion in 1997, a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors from 1997-2001 and chair of the Athlete's

Council from 1999-2001. Tonya Case Patterson, the former U.s. Sports Acrobatics President, will serve as a consultant during the transition process. Congratulation to Visa American Cup Champions Tasha Schwikert and Eric Lopez from Cuba. I hope you caught the live broadcast of this year's event on NBC. Full coverage of the event will appear in the May / June issue of USA Gymnastics. Congratulations to Todd Thornton from Team Chevron-Houston who won the all-around title at the 2002 Winter Cup Challenge, and to Olga Karmansky and Lisa Wang for winning the Senior and Junior titles at the Rhythmic Challenge. Their efforts, along with that of their coaches, should be commended. A busy upcoming event calendar is highlighted by the 2002 Group Rhythmic World Championships and the 2003 Artistic World Championships. I look forward to welcoming the world to the United States for these exciting World Championships events. Recently USA Gymnastics launched web sites for the 2002 Group Rhythmic World Championships and the 2003 Artistic World Championships. Please visit www.usagymnastics.org and www.worldchamp gym2003.com for event updates and to purchase tickets. The U.s. Rhythmic Group continues to train hard at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid as they prepare for the Group Rhythmic World Championships this July 12-14 in New Orleans. Consider a trip to the Big Easy to support our team as they challenge the world's best rhythmic group teams. Up to 40 nations are expected to contend for the title of group world champion. It will be an exciting weekend of rhythmic gymnastics! National Travel Services, the official travel partner of USA Gymnastics, can book your travel to any of these events. Please call 888-603-8747. 2002 National Gymnastics Day is August 24, 2002, and will serve as the official public ticket kickoff for 2003 Worlds (but don't forget that you can purchase your tickets now!). A celebration will take place in LA with the National Gymnastics Day Team of Chairs: Bela Karolyi, Peter Vidmar, Kurt Thomas and Kim Zmeskal. This is your day, and a great chance to increase participation of our sport nationwide!

TEN. 0 CLASSIC

501 BLUES

The TEN. 0

Just imagine grips that fit with the comfort of your oldest, most faded jeans-from the first swing. Consider baby suede padding, NEW SOFT SWING blue foam insert for those who need a little extra softness , a distinctive wrist strap and you have a 501 BLUES. Most gymnasts want a grip that ' s soft and easy to break in. They also want them to be durable. The 501 does this better than any other grip on the market AND they do it with style and good pricing .

CLASSIC is the most durable grip on the market. We know - our customers talk . Of course , it takes longer to break-in The CLASSIC grips because of the low stretch factor of the heavy duty leather. In fact, in recent independent laboratory tests the TEN.O classic leather was compared to the leather in other popular grips and was found to withstand 18% greater pulling stress. If you are a hard training, big trick gymnast who doesn't like her grips to stretch or doesn't like to buy grips frequently we recommend using THE CLASSIC. Literally thousands of gymnasts do! You will love the baby suede padding, the custom designed webbing for a fresh new look , and the new soft swing i.nsert.

Katie Heenan is proof positive that hard work, dedication and a positive aHitude pay off! Although Katie has always been talented and successful in the sport, she's had numerous setbacks along the way. Things have not always come easy for Katie; she's had to work very hard for her success. She has persevered through many tough times and, in the end, has come out ahead. Sixteen-year-old Katie Heenan is from Burke, Va., and began the sport of gymnastics when she was 4 years old. "Mom put me in gymnastics because Iwas a crazy kid/' said Katie. "I climbed out of my crib and stroller when I was a baby and she thought gymnastics would be a good sport for me." You've heard the expression "Mom knows best!" Katie's mom did know best. Katie won two medals in the 2001 World Championships in Ghent, Belgium, including both the team and uneven bcIrs bronze. Katie began gymnastics at North Stars Gymnastics in Montville, New Jersey but at age 11 she moved with her family to Burke, Va., when her father took a new job. Capital Gymnastics became Katie's new home away from home. "I did Level 5, 6, 8, 9 and two years at Levell O. Then I went elite/' said Katie. "I was on the Junior National Team for three years and the Senior National Team for one."

continued on page 44

Heenan was named as one of the TOPs Athletes of the Year along with Ashley Miles and attended the TOPs National Team training camp in December at Karolyi's Ranch. Her acceptance speech was both humble and inspiring to the young future elite gymnasts. With permission from Katie we've reprinted a portion of her speech. Thonk you for hoving me here ond owording me os the TOPs Athlete of the Yeor. Imode the TOPs Notionol Teomos 0 9-yeorilld ond went to camp in Tulso. Thot is when I met most of the Notionol Stoff ond storted preporing for the long rood oheod. TOPs is meont to inspire young othletes to ochieve their gools ond reolly understond whot it tokes to succeed in the sport of gymnostics. Thot is whot the TOPs program did for me and Ihope it will help all of you, too_ Just this yeor did Ireolly understond thot to succeed you don't need superhumon powers or extro speciol tolent. Throughout my gymnostics career, Iwos never right on top or stood out obove the crowd. Iwill odmit thot deep down inside I wished I were on top. Sometimes I would get discouraged, but I kept ot it. I kept ot it because it bothered me to wotch 0 gymnost who hod thot speciol tolent, throw it owoy-because of 0 poor ottitude or lock of consistent effortthings thot can be controlled. Itry everydoy to work the hordest thot Ican, even when Igo in the gym ond I feel like I would rather be ot home or honging out with friends. Every yeor Iwould recover from on injury, go to Chompionships ond do well, but never onything extroordinory. Lost Morch Iwos in 0 bock brace ond seriously considered giving up gymnostics ond my gools ond dreoms. But I didn't. Insteod, I decided to work even horder ond come bock and surprise everyone. And, Ithink thot is whot I did. Imode it to Chompionships even though I didn't think it wos possible. Iproceeded to moke the Notionol Teom, be nomed to the 2001 World Teom ond win 0 teom World Medol ond on individuol event medol. I hod ochieved one of my goals ond dreoms. Not because of ony superhumon strength but because I believe in working hord ond having 0 positive ouriook on life. You will work your whole gymnostics coreer for your dreom ond the poyoff. And believe me, dreoms do come true ond the poyoff will come. Eoch ond every one of you can control what you moke of your obility ond tolent. I believe 0 key element in this is hoving on open relotionship ond respect for your cooches because even though you ore the one pulling through thot lost routine, your cooch is with you until the end. None of what I hove ochieved would have happened without the help of my cooch, Totiono Perskoio, the Notional Stoff, Notionol Teom Doctors ond Trainers, Gory Worren, Kothy Kelly ond Mortha Korolyi. So thonk you again and I hope thot in the yeors to come I will be seeing more of you in the gymnastics world. Remember, be positive, dedicoted ond work hard everyday! Katie Heenan

You will work your whole gymnastics career for your dream and the payoff. And believe me, dreams do come true and the payoff will come. Each and every one of you can control what you make of your ability and talent. u •• •

For Thornton, the 2000 junior national champion, the Winter Cup marks his first all-around win as a senior-level competitor. "It feels great," Thornton said of his victory. "I've grown a lot since 2000 and I had some trouble adjusting at first. Rings was tough to get my strength back up, and parallel bars I had to kind of re-learn how to swing, but I think I've adjusted preHy well now." On his way to victory, Thornton notched the highest score of the meet with a 9.8 performance on Roor exercise. "I've been doing that routine for a while," Thornton said. "I guess everything just came together really well tonight for me." 2000 Olympian Paul H••• , 19, from Swiss Turners Gymnastics in Waukesha, Wis., placed second with a 53.55 total that included a 9.4 vault performance, which tied the top score of the night on that event. In his first meet of 2002, Hamm, who finished seventh all-around at the 2001 World Championships, took the opportunity to debut new routines on several events, including Roor exercise and pommel horse. Hamm used the Winter Cup to gauge his competition readiness for the upcoming Visa American Cup. "Honestly, I wanted to win," Hamm said after the meet, "so, I'm not completely happy, but I think I did what I wanted to do. You can't ga into a meet as big as the Visa American Cup not having competed since World Championships if you want to beat the best people in the world." .......... 40

By Luan P••z.k Karmansky, who is from Isadora Rhythmics in New York, said, "I still can't believe it. Irs amazing. I never thought it would be possible that I could win the Rhythmic Challenge. Irs really exciting. We trained hard and I tried to be calm and everything went well."

When asked about her routines, Karmansky said, "I'm using the same routines as last year but I have a lot of new elements and tosses. My routines are going well with the new Code." Karmansky said her goals are to be consistent and do well internationally. "I leave next week for the Grand Prix competition in Moscow." Karmansky is coached by Nataliya Kiriyenko and was last year's all-around runner up at the 2001 U.s. Rhythmic Championships. Also in 2001 she won the all-around at the Senior Pan American Championships in Cancun, Mexico.

A new shining star emerged at the 2002 Rhythmic Challenge when is-yea r-old Olga Karmansky scored a total of 98.85 to win her first national all-around title. The Rhythmic Cha lIenge took place Feb. 16-17 in Colorado Spring, Colo., at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Finishing behind Karmansky was her teammate Shayna Javomicky. Shayna, 17, said, "It felt really good to place second. Ijust wanted to go in and do well. I made my routines for the most part, but could have improved in some areas."

When asked about training with Olga, Shayna said, "We're very supportive of one another and we are good friends." The two train about 25 hours per week and both do home school. They do their school work in the moming before practice and on weekends.

Jessica Howard, from Intemational Rhythmics, has dominated the sport since 1999 but finished third at this year's Rhythmic Challenge. "I was a little disappointed but I've been out with an injury and did well for the short time I had to prepare." Howard leamed she had a stress fracture in her left foot in October 2001 and has been coming back from the injury since this time. "I wasn't able to do rhythmic gymnastics for a while but I still conditioned, did stretching and tried to stay in shape. I've been training hard for about a month prior to this competition. I did three new routines and I also have a new coach, Adriana Dunavska from Bulgaria. I will be much more prepared for the Rhythmic Nationals. In the junior competition, Usa Wang from Rhythmic Gems in Illinois took first all-around . Wang, 13, is coached by Lana Lashoff and said, "It feels really good to win the Rhythmic Challenge. I worked hard for this. My goal was to place first or second."

It's amazing. I never thought it would be possible that I could win the Rhythmic Challenge. It's really excltlng. We trained hard and I tried to be

one hand behind your back. You don't want your low back to be so arched that you could drive a truck through the space back there! Now, keeping your heels a few inches from the wall, slide both arms up overhead against the wall. Use your external oblique muscle to help you flatten your low back against the wall by thinking and contracting your muscles UP and IN. This helps you use your abdominal muscles to tilt your pelvis back in the right direction, towards the wall. Relax and then try about five repetitions. Remember to keep your shoulders relaxed and your knees unlocked while you do this exercise.

U S A

G Y M N A S J' , C S

I'm a gym dad. Been one for about seven years and I'm finally beginning to catch on to the "gym lingo." I now hear real words instead of grunts and groans followed by hand signals and head shaking from the coach.

MA R C H / APR I l

2 0 0 2

They're so in touch. I thought only my dog and I had that kind of non-verbal communication. I can grunt, groan, dance, wave my arms and shout for five minutes only to get a look heavenward from my daughter, to acknowledge my presence. I make it to about two or three meets a season. I pick up or take her to practice a couple of times a week. If I have to stay the four or five hours, I usually wait in the van with a burger and a book or watch the ball game on the mini color TV I recently acquired for this endurance test. I don't take notes or critique each move she makes in the gym as some parents do, but I do let her know important things like when I think her "leo" is getting a little too snug, or not to forget her grips next time as I start the 20 mile trip back home to retrieve them.

The way I see things now, I'll be a gym dad For many years to come, unless my daughter's Future husband tells her it's time to Quit the gym and stay home with the kids. The financial pounding started with Training Team. That was the period when she just looked "adorable." My wife would coo, pointing to her cute little pink, black and white team leo. (The term leo I have gathered from all evidence, is short for leotard or something close to that and probably named after some super gym dad.) The Training Team is not actually training for the kids, as one might suspect from the name. It is to train the parents to believe their kid is a sure shot Olympic prospect or at the very least up for a "full ride" scholarship to the institution of her choice. My wife and I were so well trained we immediately had our daughter'S hair cut exactly like Mary Lou Retton's, and then noticed the other 12 kids on training team had the same hair cut. Of course, the tuition doubled as the levels increased, even though college was some 10 years away. There were so many exhibitions at nursing homes that my daughter developed a phobia to elderly folks. Even today, she cringes when her grandparents want a hello hug or kiss. There were performances at malls, (she knew where every bathroom was in every

..

~ ~ Rocry·~ MOLJNTAiN mall in a 40-mile radius), schools, churches, festivals and even the grand opening of a "Hooters," although my mind is a little fuzzy about that one! I wasn't prepared for, nor forewarned that as they climb the level ladder, they would travel. "Competition where?" I shouted. "Arizona ... " stutter, gulp. "Bermuda ... the one in the middle of the ocean?" I asked. "Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Sri Lanka ... I'm sure they said Sri Lanka." "But she's only 12," I blubbered. "Parents must not travel with their children. We travel as a team." Coach Round Off allliounced, triumphantly smiling at my stunned expression. So a few moms would pile into the most road-worthy vehicle and drive the eight to 10 hours to the meet or to catch the red eye to heaven knows where, usually arriving at about 3:00 a.m. then they would repeat the process in reverse the next day, just so they could watch their little darlings for about eight minutes. We sell candy, mulch, entertairtment books, bag groceries, work concession stands at football and baseball games, do product testing, become medical guinea pigs, clean the gym floors, donate kidneys, anything to support our gym addiction and to help defray costs. The gymnasts condition their bodies and souls for hour upon hour, building flexibility and strength. They do pretzel twisted things with their bodies, hundreds of crunches, thousands of push-ups, and millions of leg lifts before the real workout even begirts. My daughter could probably "whip" any boy in the seventh grade if so motivated. The way I see things now, I'll be a gym dad for many years to come, unless my daughter'S future husband tells her it's time to quit the gym and stay home with the kids. By the time all of these events come to pass, I will know the proper terminology like a flyaway, a Tsukahara, and a back tuck gainer dismount off the balance beam. So, no matter what happens to come tumbling down the old gym mat, I'll be ready ... thanks to that one enduring dad who pioneered the way for all us gym dads. My hats off to you Mr. Leotard, wherever you are, you're the gym dandy of all gym dads. USA

/lIt was awesome to win the Winter Cup,/I said Thornton . 'Winter Cup is the step just under u.s. Championships and it felt great to win. I didn't know I had won the competition until the very end. I knew it was going to be very close. My last event was Aoor, which is my best event, and I knew I needed to nail a good routine./I When asked about his experience Thornton said, /II feel like this is a breakthrough. I'm learn ing how to compete . Everyone goes through stages and it's a constant learning cycle. I like to go to each event with a gool. At Winter Cup I just thought about my six routines and I had the confidence that I could hit them . It's helpful to me not to think about where I want to place and just focus on hitting./I His cooch Kevin Mazeika said, /lIt was a pleasant surprise that Todd won the Winter Cup. He's starting to take his gymnastics to the next level. Having Sean (Townsend) in the gym really helps, too. He can see Sean's training and see that success can happen. He's coming into his own. He has a little further to go but this was a really nice sign that he's on his way./I

Mazeika added, /lTodd has committed to changing his pommel

horse because that has been a weak event for him. We did a lot of bosics and broke everything down and he has definitely improved. He did a new routine at Winter Cup and hit. I was pleased with the work he put in prior to this event. He was confident and had a great style that I hadn't seen before./I Thornton got the jump start he needed while serving as the alternate to the 2001 World Championships team and then competing at the Glasgow Grand Prix in Scotland. We asked Thornton to talk to us about the World Championships experience and his goals in the sport.

USA Gymnastics: What was it like to be the alternate for the 2001 World Championships team?

Todd: World Championships was a really good learning experience for me. The World Championships was very well run and organized and the alternates were included in everything. We got to do all the practices, etc. We didn't get to do podium training because it wasn't allowed but we were aport of the team and learned and watched. USA Gymnastics: Which team

most impressed you at the World Championships and why?

Todd: I was most impressed with the USA Team and the way we came in as a team, as a whole. Everyone went to every pracffce, every meeffng. It was definitely a team event. USA Gymnastics: What was it like watching the competition?

Todd: During the floor finals Iknew from watching that I could be a contender on floor. It was very moffvaffng. USA Gymnastics: You train at

Houston Gymnastics Academy. What's it like training with Sean Townsend who is a World Championships gold medalist on parallel bars?

Todd: It's great. Sean is a complete player in the gym. He's someone to look up to. He always gets his work done fast. He's ahard worker and agreat teammate. He sets agood example for me as well as everyone in my gym. Sean moved in with my family in 1995 in order to train at HGA. He lived with us unffl iust last year. We were friends prior to his moving in and then it turned into more of a brother relaffonship.

USA Gymnastics: You must have a very speCial family. Tell us about your family.

Todd: My mom is 0 childcore teacherand my dod is on oil engineer. Ihave three brothers who are ages 21, 24 and 26. I'm the youngest of four boys. I was always picked on while growing up but I also got to learn from their mistakes so that was good. My family is real dose. We all live in Houston. USA Gymnastics: How did you get involved with gymnastics? Todd: Istarted gymnasncs at age 7 because Isow the ~ '88 Olympics on Tv. My mom put my brother and Iin ~ areaeanonal gym. It was alot of fun. The coaches at ~

my reaeanonal gym would give out report cards and ~ one nme they called my mom and told me Ishould go ~ to adub gym because Iwas improving sofast! Iwent;'"

to Aurora School of Gymnastics in Colorado for about two years and then my dad's job transferred our family to Houston. USA Gymnastics: Tell us about your schedule these days?

Todd: I started San Jacinto Community College in January and I'm studying business. Itrain twice aday and go to school Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30-//:30 a.m. and Tuesdays fram 7-/0 p.m. I'm taking /2 credit hours. USA Gymnastics: What would you like to do after college?

Todd: I would like to own my own gym someday. USA Gymnastics: What's your next goal in gymnastics?

Todd: My next goal is to compete in on international competition this March in Canada and, of course, the upcoming U.S. Championships this August in Cleveland. My goal for Championships is to compete with Sean and Paul (Hamm) and be up there with them!

USA Gymnastics: What do you think about hosting the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim, Calif.?

Todd: Having the World Championships in the USA is great. It's in our own backyard. Everything we're planning up to this point is to prepare for the 2003 World Championships. USA Gymnastics: What do you like to do in your spare time if you ever have any?

Todd: I like to go to the movies, hang out with friends and I'm getting ready to start anew website dedicated to the fans of gymnastics. I'm going to do stats, results from competition, quotes, questions and answers and hopefully have chats with other gymnasts. The address is www.tftgym.coml.m going into this new venture with Sean and Joson (Furr). Hopefully it will be up and running the middle of March or April. USA Gymnastics: Good luck with your new venture and with gymnastics.

Todd: Thanks.

USA Gymnastics: How do you keep up with your home schooling when you are practicing and competing so much?

KATIE HEENAN continued from page 18

When asked about her success in the Junior Olympic levels Katie said, "1 was the Level 5 State Champion, made Regionals at Level 8 and 9, and made nationals as a Levell 0, where 1 won bars and vault in my age group." Katie tested elite when she turned 12 and made it!

Katie: It's difficult. I try to get as much done as Ican when Ihave the time. USA Gymnastics: Tell me about your typical schedule.

Katie: Three days a week I get up at 6:00 a.m., get to the gym by 7:00 a.m. and workout until I0:00 a.m. Icome home and do school and go bock to the gym from 3:00-8:00 p.m. The other days Iget up at 7:30 a.m. and do school then workout at the gym from 3:00B:OOp.m.

USA Gymnastics: You've been on the USA National Team for four years yet have taken only two international assignments - One was the Sr. Pan American Championships and the other was the World Championships. Why?

Katie: Unfortunately, I was never healthy when offered an assignment. I broke my heel in 1999, plus I was having back trouble last year. I worked with Peter Boyle from the Sports and Spinal Physical Therapy and he helped me get through it. Ihave to travel 45 minutes one way to his office but Ibelieve that his therapy is the main reason I'm able to cantinue in the sport at the elite level. Ididn't think I'd qualify for the U.S. Championships in August, but I trained hard and Idid qualify. I was thrilled when I did well! USA Gymnastics: You not only qualified to compete at Championships you won bars, tied for third on Aoor and placed sixth all-around, earning a spot on the World Championships Team. How did that make you feel?

USA Gymnastics: What do you like best about your cooches?

Katie: They're very supportive and always have apositive ouHook and attitude. They help me to stay positive. I have alot of respect for them and I think we have agreat relationship. USA Gymnastics: How do you find the courage to do all your big skills?

Katie: Hummmm. That's a tough question. There's always aliffle bit of fear, but Iovercome it because I try to look at the big picture. You have to trust your coach. If your coach tells you that you're able to do askill then you need to trust him or her and do it. Then you take one

PIIOTOURAPIIBYREliEIBEHREHI

Katie: Icauldn't believe it. Iwas very happy! I felt like my hard work had paid off. There was a point when I was in the bock brace that I wanted to quit gymnastics but Idecided I wanted to came back and prove to myself and others that I cauld do it. Iloved gymnastics too much to quit. USA Gymnastics: 1heard you had another small setback with your hands prior to and during the World Championships. Can you tell us abaut it?

Katie: About a month before Championships, my hands were hurting. They started pussing, opening up and bleeding. Ihad to warm up my hands before Icould even touch the bars to train. The doctors said Ihod astaph infection and put me on antibiotics, but nothing seemed to help. It was hard working out prior to and during the World Championships. Iwould tape my hands then put my grips on and I was able to get through it. My hands finally healed after Ireturned from World Championships and cauld rest them. Kathy Kelly, Senior Women's Program Director at USA Gymnastics: Katie was amazing leading up to and during the World Championships. Katie's hand was in very bad shape. Then bath hands became irritated. Katie did not complain or water down her bar workouts. She taped her hands up, strapped on her grips and continued to train! 1truly believe that Katie won a medal on bars at the World Championships because of her enormous effort, dedication and work ethic. USA Gymnastics: Katie, what made you stick with it?

step towards more confidence. USA Gymnastics: How do you psych yourself up before a competition?

Katie: Igo through each of my routines in my head acouple times. Itry to picture myself at the competition site with everyone there and the judges sitting in their chairs. Itry to get some of the nerves out before Ieven get there. Itry to just go out there and do my best. USA Gymnastics: 1 know you've said you most admire Kim Zmeskal and Amanda Borden. Who are your role models outside of gymnastics?

Katie: My mom because she always gets everything done that needs to be done. She's a very busy lady but is always there for me. USA Gymnastics: Tell me about your family? Katie: Ihave three brothers - Dan is 19, David is 14, and Robby is 6. David does lots of sports

soccer, football, and lacrosse and Robby does baseball. Dan played hockey but now he's in college. My dad John is the VP of Marketing for an advertising agency and my mom stays at home with us kids. She drives me everywhere! We have acat Gray and adog Molly and I just got a new dog, Charlie, for my birthday. He's aWestie. He's hard to housebreak but we're getting there. He's very sweet.

Katie: I've always dreamed of making the World Championships team and Iwasn't going to let anything stand in my way of competing.

USA Gymnastics: What do you like to do outside of the gym?

USA Gymnastics: What do you like best about being a gymnast? USA Gymnastics: How do you deal with the pressure of competing?

USA Gymnastics: What are your future goals? Katie: I want to make the Individual Event World Championships this year, the 2003 World Championships and then shoot for the 2004 Olympic Games. When Igraduate in 2004 I'd like to go to UClA and study acting or drama or theatre or art. I've never been to Los Angeles but it seems like it would be agreat school and great gymnastics team!

Katie: I try to look at the big picture. I try to do the best that Ican do. My coaches tell me to relax and just do what Idoevery day in practice.

USA Gymnastics: Good luck Katie!

Katie: It teaches you to be dedicated and organized. MosHy it's fun and Ienjoy it.
