AS THE USA WOMEN'S TEAM APPROACHES THE FINAL PREPARATION period for the 2006 World Championships, it is important to take a minute to sit back and reflect upon this past year's accomplishments and use those successes as the foundation for the future. This past year has produced some amazing competitive results by numerous talented athletes. For the first time in the history of gymnastics, the women's performances at the 2005 World Championships dominated the podium by capturing an unprecedented nine medals. Chellsie Memmel earned the all-around title and captured silver medals on both bars and beam. Nastia Liukin nearly missed the all-around title by .001, finishing second and earned another silver medal on floor exercise. She is also the reigning world champion on uneven bars and balance beam. Alicia Sacramone's floor exercise routine thrilled the audience and earned her the title of world champion on that event, and she secured the bronze medal on vault as well. The fourth member of the USA Team, Jana Bieger, gave a strong performance on uneven bars in the preliminary round and would have qualified to finals if the rules had allowed it. 2006 results showed the U.S. women are still the leader on the international scene. Liukin and Shayla Worley finished first and second at the Tyson American Cup; the senior team dominated the Pacific Alliance Championships, winning the team title and with Memmel and Liukin tying for the all-around victory, followed closely by Bieger. The Senior U.S. Women won every gold and silver medal except one in event finals. The Junior Pacific Alliance Team also dominated the competition with equally impressive results. Our athletes were impressive in World Cup competitions, where both Ashley Priess and Jana Bieger took home gold medals this spring. Our national competitions brought even more athletes to the podium with Natasha Kelley and Ashley Priess sharing the title at the U.S. Classic and Kelley finishing just behind Liukin at the Visa Championships. The U.S. national program is a unique system and is as American as apple pie. The junior ranks are remarkable! Developmental and open camps were added to our calendar and served more than 90 athletes striving to join the elite ranks. The new HOPES competitive division brought 45 athletes to the competition stage to begin their journey to the national team. The TOPs program continues to enrich the gymnastics experience for the athletes and coaches who participate. It is important to say thanks at this time to all of the exceptionally fine athletes, and to wish them all good health and the best of luck in the competitions ahead. The athletes have formed true friendships and are always supportive of one another. The team spirit is alive and competition healthy. I would also like to extend appreciation to all of the elite coaches who continue to dedicate themselves to our goals. They are to be commended for forming the cohesive group that gives heart and soul to our team. Thanks to the judges who continually assist our athletes at our training and preparation camps and to the Athlete Selection Committee-Steve Rybacki , Kim Zmeskal-Burdette and Martha Karolyi-who shoulders, this difficult task with the highest degree of integrity and compassion. I would also like to give special recognition to Martha Karolyi, our National Team Coordinator, who guides us all though the good times and over the tough hurdles with her wisdom and experience, all the while working side-by-side with the national team coaches and athletes. Martha shines in the final stages of competition by designing the team plan with particular attention given to each athlete's needs. Training is tailored to the needs of the athletes' competitive strengths and their physical status. I am confident the athletes who will represent us at the World Championships in Aarhus will be well prepared, confident and the gymnastics community will be proud!

USA Gymnastics Member Club Survey: lectec

During the formative years of the gymnastics club industry, the years following the gold medal performances of Olga and Nadia, and later during the explosive growth after Mary Lou won gold in 1984, most gymnastics clubs were opened by gymnastics coaches or would-be coaches who wanted to develop competitive gymnasts. The typical gymnastics coach/gym-owner would find a warehouse with high ceilings in an area supporting only modest lease payments and one truck-load of gymnastics equipment later, a gymnastics club was born. A surprising number of these early clubs survived. The owners who opened their doors counting on love to get them through (love of gymnastics and children) discovered that love alone did not always keep the lights on and the heat going. In fact, many discovered that their love of coaching was making it very difficult to keep their doors open. The large open space required for gymnastics training was often filled with gymnasts who trained many hours, but who were not paying much for the privilege.

What to do? Gymnastics schools had always offered gymnastics classes to school-age children. How else were they to attract new gymnasts to the team? But even the most flip-obsessed soon realized that it was the recreational students that allowed them to pay the rent each month. It was not long before the more forward thinking gyms were offering gymnastics training to preschoolage students. Dance and martial arts programs were a logical next step. Soon cheerleaders were not only learning their back handsprings at the local gym but the gyms were fielding their own all-star cheer squads. The gyms had to grow bigger to allow room for all these programs and they had to move up-market so they were closer to the families with the income levels necessary to pay for all of this youth-sports training. ~

• The average gymnastics school was opened 15 years ago. • The average gymnastics facility is 15,175 sq.jft. in size. • Most gyms (66%) are air-conditioned. • The average national enrollment in 2005 was around 500 students. This is not peak enrollment, but an average enrollment during the course of the year. • Preschool classes averaged between 45 and 50 minutes in length, with 6-7 students in a class, at an average tuition of $18 an hour. Class length did not vary muth across the country, but tuition levels varied greatly from less than half the national average to almost double the average .

In the beginning, all of this growth and expansion served mainly to allow the gyms to survive while the gym owner/coach indulged in the joy of teaching double backs. But a funny thing happened. These additional programs and larger facilities required some actual business expertise to make it all work. Formerly viewed as a marginal activity restricted to the gymnastics savvy, the local gymnastics school is evolving to become more of a mainstream phenomenon in the children's sports and fitness industry. And with that evolution the gymowner/ coach was often forced with a choice: either step back from the team to learn and master the business-centered skills required to keep the gym open or coach the team and hire someone else to run the business end of the gym. This brief tumble through the last 30 years of the gymnastics club scene in the United States is the story told in the results of the 2006 USA Gymnastics Member Club survey. The survey was offered on-line to the owners of more than 1,600 gymnastics schools that are Member Clubs of USA Gymnastics. Selected results of the survey are presented below; more detailed results will be distributed to the Member Clubs; and complete results will be available to all who completed the survey.

The survey results • More women (55%) than men (45%) own gymnastics clubs in the USA. • Most of the gym owners (75%) are under the age of 50 but only a third are under the age of 40. • Most gym owners (70%) have earned a college degree. Only a quarter have earned an advanced degree. • Most gym owners were gymnasts (78%), but only a third claim to have been an accomplished gymnast. • Most gym owners coach the team fewer than 10 hours a week or not at all. • 80% of gym owners think that owning a gymnastics school is a good business to be in; more than 90% believe that their gym school will continue to grow; and the vast majority of the gym owners (88%) say they would open a gym again if they had it to do all over agai n. 8

• Entry-level, beginning classes for school-age students averaged about 65 minutes in length , with 8.5 stude nts in a class at an average tuition of $13 an hour. Again, class length did not vary much, but tuition levels varied greatly from less than half the national average to almost double the average. • Teams vary widely (from half the average number of hours and/or tuition to almost double the averages). their gym. The gym owners feLt that "open observation of aLL gym activity" was most critical. ApparentLy the days of not aLLowing the parents to watch their child's training are over. There is more at work here than mereLy appeaLing to the parent's concerns over safety. Many gym owners reaLize that aLLowing the parents to watch every minute of every class is a great marketing tool. If the parents cannot see their boy's eyes Light up the first time he makes a back somersauLt without a spot, or see an entire group of LittLe girls make a mad dash to be first in Line for the back-handspring machine, or hear the voice of the coach praising the 4-year-oLds for being so brave as they crossed the aLLigator pit-upside down-then how can these parents teLL their friends and neighbors about aLL the great activities going on in the gym every singLe day of the week? We aLL know that even the best gymnasts faLL off the beam on occasion and our gym owners recognize chaLLenges that the gymnastics club industry faces challenges. The top three were identified as Lack of quaLified teachers, increased competition in kid's sports and generaLLy poor economic conditions. The survey also asked about the best business decision the gym owner made in the past two years, and the top responses centered on hiring taLent, both in terms of business management and in gymnastics expertise, and in relocating and expanding their facilities. Bigger appears to be better as those gyms offer more programs, and many gyms are relocating to the fast-growing suburbs where young families can be easily found . The books most often recommended by club owners for other club owners to read were the Bible and The E Myth, by MichaeL E. Gerber. The survey asked the club owner's opinions about the job USA Gymnastics was doing and ways in which USA Gymnastics couLd heLp them even more. The resuLts of that portion of the survey foLLow.

What the gym owners liked best about the work and activities of USA Gymnastics: the gym owners expressed their appreciation for the technicaL information provided by USA Gymnastics, the Web site, regional and nationaL Congresses, Technique Magazine, the Member Club program, the NationaL Business Conference, the strong performances of the USA NationaL Team and the exposure of the top gymnasts on teLevision. wanted, first and foremost, additionaL educationaL materiaLs and opportunities. This was far and away the most pervasive and aLL-encompassing finding in the entire survey. The educationaL information sought by club owners was overwheLmingLy centered on the non-competitive aspects of gym club operations, including preschooL programs; schooL-age and recreation programs; fitness programs including the Tyson Fitness ChaLLenge; cheerLeading; trampoline and tumbLing; gym business information; and promotionaL activities, such as television commerciaLs and more teLevision exposure. The gym owners stiLL wanted additionaL training and educationaL opportunities for aLL LeveLs and discipLines within the competitive programs offered by and through USA Gymnastics. Of course, many also wanted fees Lowered.

Final thoughts:

More than 300 gyms from 41 states responded to the survey. The gyms ranged from the very smalL (20 students) to the very Large (more than 2,500 students) and every size in between. The oLdest gym responding opened in 1949 and the most recent opened in June 2006. Most of the gyms offered competitive gymnastics, though many did not. What became clear while organizing and compiling the data and reading the written responses (often very detaiLed and Long responses) was the passion the gymnastics community has for its sport and for the children who attend the programs. The simpLe act of responding to the survey was a demonstration of this passion because it took close to an hour to answer aLL of the questions with care. (I know, 1 know. 1 Lied when 1 impLied that it wouLd onLy take 30 minutes.) Thanks to aLL who took the time to compLete the survey. Thank you for what you bring to your community. 2006 NATIONAL GYMNA TYSON FITNESS The theme for National Gymnastics Day 2006 was "A celebration of Fitness;' and the Tyson Fitness Challenge was the platform for raising money for the Children's Miracle Network. This year's National Gymnastics Day activities culminated on Aug. 5, 2006. In just six years, gymnastics clubs have raised a total of more than $640,000 for local children's hospitals in the Children's Miracle Network. This year, the top three clubs with the highest number of participants in the Tyson Fitness Challenge wi ll be featured in USA Gymna stics' publications and on usa-gym nastics.org, as well as receive gifts from Tyson. In addition, the top three individual fundraisers for the Children's Miracle Network wi ll receive a trip to the 2007 Tyso n American Cup in Jackso nville, Fla. Massac husetts Gymnasti cs Center in Boston , Mass., owned by Mike Colarossi, had the largest number of participants in the Tyson Fitness Challenge with 802 participants and will be featured on the National Gymnastics Day 2007 poster. Massachusetts Gymnastics Center also earned the most money fo r Children's Miracle Network by raising an incredible $18,304.76. "We have prided ourselves on being such an integral part of our community, said Colarossi. "For the past 30 years our goal has been to enrich t he lives of those around us. Another big salute for the funds raised for Children's Miracle Network goes to both Gymnastics World, owned by Joan and Ron Ganim, for raising $15,594 and Aim High Gymnastics in East Greenwich , R.I. , owned by Amy Nelson , for raising $5,202.50. Eleven-year-old Andrew Wise raised $2,578, the most money for an individual! Andrew is from Sonshine Gymnastics Academy in Conway, Ark., and will have his photo included on the 2007 National Gymnastics Day poster. Congratulations also go to Michelle Moock, 11, from Gymnastics World of Broadview Heights, who raised $1,126 and to Gaby McCarty, 5, from The Flip Zone in Plainfield, Ind., who raised $834. For their efforts, Wise, Moock and McCarty, earned two roundtrip tickets to the 2007 Tyson American Cup in Jacksonville, Fla., March 3, 2007. USA Gymnastics and Tyson Foods extend a sincere thank you to all the clubs that participated in the Tyson Fitness Challenge and for their efforts toward improving the fitness and nutritional health of our country's youth, as well as getting more kids off the couch, into the gym and raising funds for the Children's Miracle Network! t Gymnastics in Hillsborough, N.J., celebrated National Gymnastics Day with an open house and raised more than $1,000 for Alex's Lemonade Stand for Pediatric Cancer Research. Their theme was "Kids helping Kids;' and they collected donations at stands that were set up in front of the gym, including Lemonade, Cotton Candy, Snow Cones, Popcorn, Hotdogs, and the Big Kahuna Water Slide. Inside the gym, team members performed demonstrations, and coaches taught new students cartwheels and took children through supervised circuits on all the apparatus. More than 500 individuals were involved throughout the day and it was a huge success. nastics Beat of Fresno, if., sponsored an open house celebration and invited George the giraffe of the local Children's Hospital. Children took the challenge and went to their relatives and friends to sponsor their efforts in the Tyson Fitness Challenge, which included five categories: cartwheels, push ups, sit ups, pull ups, and handstand holds. The team raised $1,000. Don Spencer, who owns Go For It US~ in North Las Vegas, Nev., gets creativ with his National Gymnastics Day celebration! His club hosted its 18th annual triathlon at Nellis Air Force Base. The club raised$l, 152, surpassing its goal of $1,000. The club had 62 gymnasts, ranging in age from 6 to 17 (Levels 4-10), swim, bike and run. Every gymnast who started the race, finished it!

This will then bring up a screen that lists all of the members in your club. • You MUST select the Athlete Member Type in the first Drop down field. • You MUST hold down the CTRL KEY and LEFT CLICK on each Athlete you want to have the system re-print an Athlete membership card. This will HIGHLIGHT Each ATHLETE you want to re-print a card for. The system will generate the following within 24 hours. Natasha Kelley Ma ki ng her Move

Three-and-a-half years ago, Natasha Kelley wasn't satisfied with the progress she was making in the sport so she and her family decided to make a move. Natasha, her mom and younger brother moved from their home in Baton Rouge, La., to Katy, Texas, so Natasha could train with elite coaches Dan and Ashly Baker at what is now called Stars Gymnastics in Houston . Natasha's mom , Peggy, said, "We knew that for Natas ha to reach her dreams in gym nastics, we needed to be in a gym experienced with the elite program. After much research, the decision was made for Natasha, my son and me to move to Houston and my husband would join us later. We're so happy with our decision and the way things turned out. Dan and Ashly are a wonderful match for Natasha." When asked what makes Natasha so special, Dan and Ashly said, "Natasha is a fierce competitor. She has the ability to raise her performance in a competition. She is also a very hard worker!" Kelley, who is now 16, has flourished with the Baker's, recently taking second in the all-around at the 2006 Visa Championships in the senior division. Earlier in the summer, Kelley tied with Ashley Priess for first in the all-around at the U.S . Classic. Kelley, who was the 2005 Junior National AllAround Champion, won the bronze medal on floor at the 2006 Moscow Stars World Cup. She's loaded with difficulty and eager to make another move! Next up on the schedule? Kelley is competing for the USA at the 2006 World Championships and hope to win a gold medal. 1(

Filed This Under Miscellaneous: To Make Daily Deposits or Not? From time to time, when answering an email question from a colleague, I will reread the content and think, hey, this would make a great Biz Tip. Below is a question from a well-known industry leader, Patti Komara, and my thoughts on the subject:

I have a problem and I want to • know how y-ou handle this situation. Do your evening oHice people stay late and do the deposit (until they balance-no matter how late) or does your morning shift do the evening deposit? Do you do a morning and evening deposit or once a day? We're having such a problem. We want those evening people out of here instead of stayi,!E so late, but it's making our morning staH nuts trying to balance the previous night staff's mistakes. -Patti Komara

Your question brings up yet • another advantage for not only providing for, but encouraging electronic payments since credit cards and EFTs are deposited immediately. At Kids First, for years, electronic transactions have been increasing (electronic payments now represent 79%) and this trend has allowed us to simplify many money handling systems. In fact, the only balancing we

do is for our Beehive Gift Shop and that is done at the end of every evening. As to deposit frequency, we make a physical deposit, on average, two times per week. But, here is the rest of the story -our teams pay tuition on a monthly basis and classes on a term basis (five terms per year) so our bank runs are on an "as needed" basis. Whenever our Customer Service Department processes a large batch of checks or cash, it triggers a run to the bank, perhaps at midday or day-end. So, with our 'as-needed' system in place, at anyone moment, on average, we have only about $3,000, sitting in our safe waiting to be deposited. The lost opportunity for interest on $3,000 is only $150/year. I calculate that the labor cost of going to the bank is, say, $25 per trip. That means, if we can save just one bank run per week that is a savings of 52 x $25 = $1,300 per year. And if we save three trips per week that equates to a yearly savings of almost $4,000! I'll gladly forgo $150 of lost opportunity interest in favor of a $4,000 payroll savings! Of course, there is a capital investment one must make to make fewer bank runs and that is bolt-down 'drop' or 'depository safe' (turn the crank and checks and cash disappear safely down the slot). I bought ours about 25 years ago and it cost me

$900 in 1980 dollars (I remember the amount because it was such a HUGE decision) . That $900 safe has saved our company, perhaps, $50,000 and it still has plenty of life left in it! I took the liberty of Googling 'drop safes' and learned that they seem to cost about the same today as when I bought mine (I bet they are manufactured off shore). Goto http ://www. buyasafe.com and do a site search for 'drop safe: By the way, on that site, you can also purchase a 'Desinex hidey-hole fake aerosol can' exactly like the one I bought decades ago to stash away emergency cash; a low tech solution that I still use it today! So, in a nutshell, my latest thinking on the subject is to identify the essential subjective qualities, quantify them, and manage by the results. 3. ELITE COACHES MANUAL Steve Rybacki wishes to create an Elite Coaches Manual to bring all pertinent information into one document so that the elite coaches and those wishing to enter the elite program will have an easy reference manual. Committee would like this document completed before Championships if possible.

4. FINANCIAL MATTERS Gary distributed a spreadsheet with the income and expenses for this year. We still are in good financial shape. Gary reported to the committee that he is in discussions with Gym Nova to obtain equipment for the verification camp. Steve Rybacki sent a letter to Steve Penny recapping the meeting conducted with the national team coaches at the last training camp. 2008 Tour discussions and decisions will be on-going.

5. JUDGING ISSUES Committee discussed judging format for the Classics meet and complimented the judges on a good job. We will use the same system at the Championships. The committee also recommends to continue to bring judges into training camps. This has been of benefit to the athletes and coaches. ~

USA Gymnastics awards 2007 AMERICAN CUP JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

The best in men's and women's international gymnastics return to Florida when Jacksonville plays host to the 2007 Tyson American Cup, one of the world's most prestigious gymnastics events, on March 3 at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Tickets for the Tyson American Cup, which has a legacy of showcasing the top international gymnasts, go on sale on Saturday, Oct. 7.

"We are excited about returning to the city of Jacksonville," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. ''The 2007 Tyson American Cup will showcase the world's top gymnasts as they travel the road to Beijing in earnest. This will be a great opportunity for sports fans to see our sport's future stars in person." The 2007 Tyson American Cup, which features an all-around competition, begins at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are on sale now for $50, $35 and $19.50 and are subject to applicable fees. Tickets may be purchased through Ticketmaster and its outlets; by phone at (904) 353-3309; online at www.ticketmaster.com; at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena box office; or through participating gymnastics clubs in the Jacksonville area. "It is truly an honor to host such an array of top international gymnasts and a competition of this stature. Tyson American Cup to Jacksonville Reigning uneven bars and balance beam world champion Nastia Liukin of Parker, Texas, won the women's title at the 2006 Tyson American Cup, with Jonathan Horton of Houston defeating Japan's Hisashi Mizutori, ranked second in the world in the all-around, in the men's competition. Shayla Worley of Orlando was second in the women's event. Since the 2006 Tyson American Cup, Liukin has gone on to win her second straight all-around title and Horton won the men's 2006 NCAA all-around title. The athletes competing in the 2007 Tyson American Cup will be announced closer to the event.

II. Kathy Kelly welcomed the committee and thanked them for all they do on a daily basis. Kelly congratulated Kathy Ostberg, the newly elected National Administrative Committee Chairman .

TOP's program is strong. The on-line registration went well. Have 2700 tested. State Managers were appointed to improve consistency between testings. State TOP's Managers must be at every state TOP's testing. These TOP's state managers were brought in to a workshop. Program has reached 60-70 new clubs. Hope's program replaced Children's Elite. Many new clubs participated in the Hope's meet. Developmental Camps were added to the calendar this year and will continue. They proved to be very successful in involving new athletes and clubs.

IV. WOMENS PROGRAM COMMITTEE Tom Koll discussed meeting agenda to approve Operating Code changes .

V. JO COMMITTEE REPORT Tom Koll discussed leotard colors of the region which is ultimately the Women Administrative committee's responsibility. Committee requests that Connie provide them with accent color and other information Tom requested that each region consider a method for the nomination of a Regional Coach of the Year. will decide the National JO Coach of the Year. The winner will be introduced at USA Championships at 2007. Timeline: • States select a State JO Coach of the Year. This nomination will be submitted to the Regional JOCC at the Regional Championships. • Each region will select a Regional JO Coach of the Year following the JO National Championships. This nomination will be submitted to Tom Koll on or before July 1, 2007

VI. FINANCIAL REPORTING The committee discussed financial reporting issues. State Chairs need to report to their constituents. Regional Chairs need to report to their constituents. John Hewett, USA Gymnastics Controller, addressed the committee on a number of issues relating to financial reporting, updates in technology and future possibilities. John will create an excel worksheet so that the financial reporting will be uniform and done electronically. RC's are still the control of the SC's finances and RC's still need to receive a copy of the SC's reports. RC's will hold rebates until paperwork is complete. Regional rebates may also be held if reporting is not received. Receipts - must be kept. A minimum of a bank statement must be filed with the financial report. The Regional Committee Chairman may require additional documentation . John will review categories and format of the spreadsheet and make any suggestions if needed. Both state and regional accounts will be maintained with the same spreadsheet. State and Regional chairs should be listed on the States account and Regional accounts should also have two signatures. Recommendation that the states and regions file both a quarterly report for the period ending June 30, and an annual report reflecting activity from July 1 of the previous year to June 30 of the current year ie. (July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006). The annual report must be published in the next newsletter or posted on the web-site Motion: R. Sandoz Second: L. Perrott PASSED

VII. REGIONAL CONGRESS Kelly presented a check to Cori Rizzo for Region 3 Congress. The Congress wa s both a financial and educational success . The office staff is looking forward to servicing all the regions next year. Kathy Kelly requested that the RC's submit a choice of 2 locations and 2 dates for 2007 . Promotion at the State and Regional level need s to improve in order to increase participation. Kathy Ostberg will be a great asset to this project.

VIII. STATE CHAIRMEN'S WORKSHOP The committee addressed the agenda for the State Chairmen Workshop and went over the preparations.

JO Nationals on Sunday evening and continue on Monday. May 20 and on May 21 in Mason , Ohio.

X. EDUCATIONAL SERVICES - KATHY FELDMANN Hired Carisa Laughon as Director of Education. Degree in finance and has much project manager experience. Tan ia Heath will be Education Manager. USA Gymnastics University will be developed for each discipline. Each will be their own 'college' in the University. USA Gymnastics will be hosting the first FIG Level 3 Academy in the US. The event will be conducted Nov 3-8 in Houston. Women's National Team Coaches will be invited. The Women's High Performance Coaching Seminar will be held in conjunction with the FIG Academy and will allow us to include (as audits) up to 30 more coaches in the program. The audits will not receive an FIG certification , but attendance will be considered in the USA Gymnastics University Tracking will be able to be done in membership files . KF discussed improvements in website and on-line registration process. We will be able to do group registrations as well as individual.

XI. A·l AWARDS Toni from A-1 Awards gave everyone a brochure. Discussion was held, relative to personalizing the ribbons or adding a charm to the state or regional medal. Any additions to the USA Gymnastics medal will incur increased cost. Any request for additions to the state or regional medal (charms or ribbon) should be sent to Kathy Ostberg. II. REPORT ON RHYTHMIC IEC ELECTION The election for the newly formed International Elite Committee took place at the National Team Coaches meeting on 8/ 18/06. This committee (includes 4 coaches and an athlete representative) will make recommendations to the RPC regarding all aspects of the elite program. VI. UPDATE ON 2007 PAN AM GAMES The 2007 National Qualifier will be the selection event for the 2007 Pan America n Championships. Team nominations must be submitted to the USOC by June 15. Currently the Qualifier is scheduled for June 2 but the MPC would like to consider June 9 and is checking on site availability for that weekend.

SELECTION PROCEDURES FOR 2007 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Early Discussions - The MPC began discussion for the 2007 World Championships Selection Procedures by looking at the difficulty that the '07 calendar presents. • Pan American Games are two weeks prior to the Visa Championships. • Travel for the World Championships team would occur less than two weeks following the Visa Championships. • As an added factor the 2007 World University Games are on the same date as 2007 Visa Championships.

XI. JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM REPORT Revisions in the Men's Junior Olympic Program have moved the evaluation system very far from the structure and standards of the FIG Code of Points. Dennis McIntyre presented some possible options for future qualification procedures for Juniors to the Visa Championships. Under consideration will be taking only the top 3 from the Junior Olympic Championships, with the others coming from the Elite Qualifier, with participation in 2 FIG judged events a prerequisite for entering that meet. This subject will be revisited at the MPC meeting in St. Paul.

Provide a brief summary outlining how an athlete is selected as a nominee to the Team. The selection procedures for the two individual gymnasts are as follows : 1. The process for consideration to be nominated for the Rhythmic 2007 Pan American Team involves all age eligible 2006-2007 National Team Members (for national team qualification, please visit www.usa-gymnastics.org) who will be invited to a selection camp to be held in June 2007 . 2. The highest ranked athlete from the control competition at the Selection Camp will be nominated to the 2007 Pan American Team . 3. The second athlete will be selected by the Selection Committee (See Section II) at the conclusion of the camp. 4. Approved petitions. Petitions to the 2007 Pan American Team will be limited to the top five (5) senior athletes from the 2007 Rhythmic Challenge. Petitioned athletes are subject to the same criteria for selection as the second athlete. In order to submit a petition to be nominated to the 2007 Pan American Games Team, the athlete must submit a written petition to the Rhythmic Program Director as soon as practical after learning of her inability to participate or continue to participate in the 2007 Pan American Selection Camp. Petitions based on illness or injury must be accompanied by a physician's report indicating the nature and extent of the injury and illness, and the nature and extent of that injury or illness is subject to verification by a doctor selected

II. DISCRETIONARY SELECTION (if applicable) A. Provide rationale for utilizing discretionary selection: The sport of gymnastics is not a measured or timed event. Rhythmic gymnastics is a subjectively evaluated sport, therefore, in the selection of athletes it is difficult to make decisions based solely on objective criteria. B. List the discretionary criteria and explain how it will be used: SELECTION CRITERIA The committee will consider the following areas when nominating the second athlete to the 2007 Pan American Team and replacement athletes: 1. Results of the 2007 Rhythmic Challenge. 2. Routine performance "Hit" consistency. 3. Results from international and national competitions. 4. International experience. 5. Competitive readiness that allows for maximum performance. 6. Medal potential. 7. Demonstrated professional attitude and ability to positi vely contribute to the team dynamics. C. III. REMOVAL OF ATHLETES A. Prior to acceptance of nomination by the USOc. USA Gymnastics has jurisdiction over potential nominees. An athlete who is to be nominated to the Team by USA Gymnastics may be removed from the Nominations for any of the following reasons, as determined by USA Gymnastics. 1. Voluntary withdrawal. Athlete must submit a written letter to the USA Gymnastics President/CEO. 2. Injury or illness is certified by an USA Gymnastics physician (or medical staff).
