USA GYMNASTICS
MESSAGE
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THE 43RD ANNUAL USA Gymnastics National Congress such a success. This year's event. held in San Jose, was just shy of breaking the attendance record set in Boston in 2000, which had the additional lure of being an Olympic year. For those of you who could not attend this year's National Congress here are a few of the highlights: Jon Gordon, author of the book Energy Bus, was the keynote speaker at the Business Conference and delivered a highly motivati ng speech to club owners, coaches, and state chairs in attendance. Jon's enthusiasm was contagious and many attendees were moved by his positive attitude and spirit. His book is a good read for business owners and managers. The morning fitness activities were a big hit in San Jose. Fitness pioneer Jack LaLanne, Olympic gymnasts Peter Vidmar, Bart Conner, Blaine Wilson, and Ron Galimore were joined by local city council members and gymnastics fans for the morning workouts in Visa Championships Fitness Plaza. The fitness message is an incredible growth opportunity for our sport and the Tyson Fitness Challenge is receiving strong reviews from those who participate. In the process, we are helping kids who need help by raising money for the Children's Miracle Network. This year's exhibit hall was sold out. Attendees were treated to all types of products and services related to the sport of gymnastics as well as the popular United States Gymnastics Suppliers Association mega raffle. The class of 2007 was inducted into the Hall of Fame. They included Kevin Davis, Sadao Hamada, Karl Heger, Leigh Hennessy, Irina Vdovets, Dr. Gene Whelan , Valerie Zimring-Schneiderman and Lifetime Achievemnt Award recipient Dr. Joseph C. Schabacker. Thank you Karl Heger for a truly moving acceptance speech about the pride of re presenting your country in athletic competition and the sincere devotion you have to servi ng your country in law enforcement. st. Vincent's Sports Performance Center signed on as a sponsor in 2006 as the official health care provider to USA Gymnastics. Several staff mem bers presented lectures on numerous topics including Assessi ng Muscular Imbalances and Exercises to Correct them ; Mental Toughness: Sport Psychology Skills for Gymnastics; Linear Acceleration Training for vault and floor; Neuromuscular Activation Exercises for Inju ry Preve ntion and Performance Enhancement; and Dealing with Upper Quadant Injuries. These professionals have been contributing articles and information to our publications over the past year and are working with members of our national team. It was great un vei ling their knowledge and expertise to our members at National Congress. The Visa Championships was a tremendous success. This year's event was one of the best attended in hi story. There were many activities surrounding this event including the all-new Visa Fan Fest which featured music, autographs, interactive fitness, face-painting , and, of course, food and beverages. Mid-day gymnastics demonstrations also took place in downtown San Jose to gain visibility for the event and local clubs. The overall experience in San Jose was outstanding. Thank you to our partners - the San Jose Sports Authority, the HP Pavilion , San Jose McEnery Convention Center, the local gymnastics community, and especially Visa for your tremendous support. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the "One Year Out" countdown to the Beijing Olympics and develop tremendous momentum for a fantastic 2008. See you in the gym!

important lower abdominal muscles - by Kim Goss Editor of Bigger, Faster, Stronger magazine
One physical attribute that sets gymnasts apart from other athletes is tremendous abdominal development. In fact, gymnasts often display chiselled, rock-hard abs that rival those of the best competitive bodybuilders. And with good reason. Powerful abdominals are essential to perform the complex movements required to participate in this challenging sport. Gymnastics coaches know this, and it's a matter of course to see gymnasts performing hundreds of repetitions in such exercises as hanging leg raises, sit-ups and crunches.
Chloe Van Tussenbroek displays ecxellent abdominal muscles. Chloe is a Levell 0 gymnast from the Olympus School of Gymnastics in Sandy, Utah.
Figure 1
The bad news about this practice is that if gymnasts pay insufficient attention to the lower abdominal musculature, such training may be doing as much harm as good by increasing the risk of injury and inhibiting athletic performance. The good news is that gymnasts can quickly develop strong lower abdominals by adding a few sets of a specific exercise to their conditioning programs-an exercise that is easy to learn and requires no special apparatus such as those shown in infomercials. Do I have your attention?
°ec1oralis major
Just What Are the Lower Abs? To explain what the lower abdominals are, why they are so important and howto properly train them,l turned to my colleague Paul Gagne,a highly regarded Canadian strength coach and posturologist.Gagne has worked with hundreds of professional athletes, including many elite Canadian gymnasts, and has given seminars on how to develop exceptional strength in both the upper- and lower abdominal muscles. Many exercise authorities and medical professionals will claim that the rectus abdominis, the muscle responsible for shaping the envied /lsix-pack,/I is just one long single muscle that extends from the top of the sternum and rib cage to the pubic bone. So, in light of this skepticism, I asked Gagne to explain just what is meant by the term lower abdominals. Gagne replied that while it's true the lower abdominals don't really exist from an anatomical standpoint, for training purposes the rectus abdominis can be divided into two sections: supraumbilical and subumbilical:/l5upra essentially refers to the part of the rectus abdominis area above the bellybutton, and sub refers to everything under the bellybutton./lThis separation is illustrated in Figure 1. Although Gagne admits that the entire rectus abdominis is activated to some degree in virtually every exercise involving the trunk, it's possible to emphasize specific segments of the muscle, such as by positioning the body differently. This effect, says Gagne, is similar to what happens when bodybuilders attempt to develop specific areas of the pectorals by performing bench presses on an incline or a decline.
The lower abdomina Is reg ion refers to the abdominal muscles below the bellybutton (i llustration reprinted by permission, Human Kinetics, www.humankinetics.com from th e book Streg th Training Anatomy 2nd ed.)
Figure 2
The Missing Link in Ab Training Gagne says the subumbilical section of the abdominals plays an important function in maintaining proper posture./lWhen a gymnast lands, he or she needs good posture if the spine is to properly control the high impact forces. Any excess or lack of curvature of the spine compromises the proper shock-absorbing qualities of the spine and as such may contribute to injury./I
The Excessive Lumbar Curvature displayed by some gymnasts (Figure 2) may be in part to weakness in the lower abdominals, says Gagne. Further, the problem is compounded if one side of the subumbilical muscle is underdeveloped, causing excessive rotation ~

of the spine that can increase the risk of disk injury. Gagne adds that this condition would also adversely affect a gymnast's spatial awareness during tumbling or make it more difficult to balance on a beam. In terms of athletic performance, when the pelvis is rotated forward due to muscle imbalance, the lower abdominals become chronically stretched and are therefore difficult to contract and contribute to sports performance. For example, a gymnast with weak lower abdominal muscles would not be able to generate as much speed out of the bottom of a tap swing."AIi macro movements in sports depend on micro movements," says Gagne. "So performing hanging leg raises to improve performance during a tap swing is fine, provided all the segments of the torso are strong enough to properly coordinate the activity." Another problem is that if a gymnast has weak lower abdominals, then performing popular exercises such as hanging leg raises will probably increase the muscle imbalance - in effect, making the lower abdominals relatively weaker.
Testing and Training the Lower Abs

TECHNIQUE' SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2007
How do you know if you have weak lower abdominals? One test is to lie on your back with your knees bent at 90 degrees and place your hands just above the hip bone (Figure 3). Lift your elbows off the floor and rest your head on the ground (Figure 4). Now try to lift your hips straight up, keeping your upper legs perpendicular to the floor (Figure 5).lf you can't perform this test without moving your knees toward your head, or if you have to brace your elbows on the floor or raise your head to perform the movement, then you have weak lower abdominals."This lower abdominal raise is just about the only exercise you could say is purely subumbilical," says Gagne. Interestingly, I've tested hundreds of competitive figure skaters on this exercise, several who have competed in the Olympic Games, and only a few could pass this test the first time they tried. The only gymnast I've tested so far who could pass this test the first time she tried is Maegan Snodgrass, a Level 10 competitor I train who is also an American record holder in weightlifting - so she doesn't count. In fact, the Levell 0 gymnast demonstrating this exercise, Chloe Van Tussenbroek, had to practice this exercise for several weeks to be able to perform it properly. In addition to being a good test of lower abdominal strength, the lower abdominal raise is also a simple, practical exercise to strengthen the lower abdominals. When an athlete first performs the exercise, the hips may not move; but as long as the athlete feels the muscles contracting, the area is being strengthened. Eventually the lower abdominals will strengthen so that the hips lift off the floor. To make the exercise more difficult, simply squeeze a medicine ball between your knees (Figure 6) or have a partner apply manual resistance to the top of the knees. As shown in Figure 7 you can also place a dumbbell between your knees - Gagne says he has athletes use up to 100 pounds in this exercise! However, because it's easy for the weight to slip with this method and possibly cause an injury, it would be a good idea to have a training partner lightly hold the ends of the dumbbell to prevent it from dropping on the athlete. The spotter should also assist in placing the weight between the knees and removing the weight when the exercise is completed .
The hips move straight up, keeping th e upper legs perpendicular to the floor.
Holding a dumbbell between the knees will make the exercise more difficult, but with heavy weig hts a spotter should be used.
As far as reps and sets are concerned, regardless of which version of this exercise you perform, you should work the muscles for about 60 seconds per set. Because of the short range of motion of this exercise, you will complete the repetitions relatively quickly. Thus, a workout of 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps could be considered an appropriate exercise prescription for many athletes. That being said, it's important to avoid jerky movements when performing the exercise; instead, slowly lift the hips up and down, even pausing briefly at the top of the motion. After a base of strength is achieved with the lower abdominal raise,a gymnast would begin performing exercises that involve coordination between the upper- and lower abdominal muscles. But the scope of that subject is such that it will have to be left for a future article. Abdominal training is key to helping gymnasts fulfill their athletic potential. Coaches should test their athletes with the lower abdominal raise, and then strengthen them with the same exercise until this weakness becomes a strength. It's the best way to ensure your gymnasts are strong to the core. X
Squeezing a medicine ball between the knees is one way to increase resistance in this exercise.

EARING YOUR ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT (ACL) IS ONE OF TH E MOST COMMON catastrophic injuries in sports. The ACL is the main stabilizing ligament in the knee. It joins the tibia (shin bone) with the femur (thigh bone) and prevents the tibia from sliding out in front of the femur and provides rotational stability. A torn ACL requires reconstructive surgery and months of rehabilitation. There are two causes of ACL injuries: contact and non-contact. It is extremely difficult to prevent a contact ACL injury; however studies show that with the proper training program the incidence of non-contact ACL tears is significantly reduced . Female athletes suffer a disproportionate amount of ACL tears, especially those athletes who play basketball and soccer. An astonishing 93% of female athlete's ACL tears are considered non-contact. Typically a non-contact ACL injury occurs with a planting or cutting movement or landing with a straight leg. Theories as to why this happens involve anatomical differences, muscle imbalances, and faulty movement patterns. Anatomical differences can not be changed, however muscle imbalances and faulty movement patterns can be improved with an ACL rupture prevention screen and an injury prevention exercise program . A proper ACL prevention program will focus on multiple-plane and mUltiple-joint work. This means the athlete will be moving in many directions and utilizing the entire body correctly to mimic the body's natural movement in sport. The exercise program should emphasize balance and proprioception in functional, sport-specific positions. Addressing the body as a whole will help reduce excessive force on the knee joint. When an athlete begins an ACL prevention program, his or her muscle imbalances and faulty movement patterns should be addressed first before moving on to plyometrics. Typically an athlete will have backside weakness, poor core control and will squat in valgus position (see picture). Once these problems have been addressed, it is appropriate for the athlete to begin correcting their landing position in single and double leg postures. Quality and control should always be emphasized. Athletes need to spend time on injury prevention as often as possible. Incorporating balance/ proprioception, agility and plyometric exercises into their warm-up on a daily basis and doing strength training 2-3 times per week is recommended. The most important component of an ACL prevention program is communication with the athlete. An athlete must "buy" into the program and understand why he or she is doing it. Educating athletes about ACL injuries and how to prevent them will increase their motivation and compliance with the program, benefiting them even more in the long run. St. Vincent Sports Performance ~ continue on p.16
~
continued from p.14 Center has developed an ACL rupture prevention screen that is designed to identify an athlete's muscle imbalances and faulty movement patterns. Several examples of the corrective exercises are listed below. In conclusion, it is impossible to prevent 100% of ACL tears. Accidents will happen. However, by correcting muscle imbalances and improving movement patterns we can reduce the number of ACL tears. Being screened and incorporating an injury prevention program into your training regimen is one of the smartest moves you can make. For more information on St. Vincent's ACL rupture prevention screen and our Functional Strength Training classes, please call 317-415-5747.

WORLEY Shayla Worley finished second all-around behind Shawn Johnson at the Visa Championships in San Jose, Calif., August 15-18. She was also second on bars and fourth on beam and floor. More importantly, she made her first World Championships team and will compete in Stuttgart, Germany, Sept. 1-9. Shayla has met one of her goals - to make a World Championships team! Worley was derailed last year from making the World Championships team due to injury, so she was thankful that she was healthy and able to make the team this time around.
Worley, who has incredible flexibility and poise, trains at Orlando Metro with coaches Jeff Wood and Christi Barineau. She's been a member of the national team since 2003. She competed in the Tyson American Cup in 2006-07 and the 2006 Pacific Alliance Championships where she earned valuable competition experience. In 2007, Shayla was a member of the USA delegation that traveled to Ireland for the USA-Great Britain competition. She helped the USA team win gold and also earned the gold medal on bars and the silver medal in the all-around. Shayla is a junior in high school in Orlando, Fla., where she takes some regular classes and some online classes. She was home schooled in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades then went to high school as a freshman. "The reason I was home schooled was because in middle school, the hours conflicted with the gym schedule. Then in high school, I could take online classes and it worked in my schedule." Shayla has achieved one of her two big gymnastics goals, which include making the World Championships team. She hopes to check the second goal off of her list next year, which is to make an Olympic Team! 1\ PHOTO: /MJ MORSE

More On Pricing Decisions I RECENTLY RECEIVED THIS EMAIL and thought sharing it, along with my answer, might help shed more light on this difficult and important subject. Jeff I read your recent article about the CPI in Technique magazine, and understand your theory of profit margin and price adjustment. One question that keeps coming to mind is the "Basket of Goods" that is used to determine CPI. How do we know which goods the consumer is willing to pay more for? In other words, the consumer may be willing to pay 2. 6% more for ineLastic goods (cigarettes, miLk, gas, etc.) but much Less, say .6% more, for eLastic goods (recreationaL
I
activities, Lawn care, etc.). If we simpLy raise our prices according to the CPI, and not take a carefuL Look at what the market will bear in respect to eLastic goods, we couLd price ourseLves out of the kids industry as a whoLe. JL, MBA, LATC, Boston Hi JL ... An excellent question you raise. In fact, it is the million dollar question! Certainly a decisionmaker cannot know for sure if the consumer will collectively accept or rebuff a price adjustment or hike. Theoretically, any price adjustment or hike will drive a certain number of customers out of the market. However, our measuring stick must be profit and the only way to know a price adjustment effect on profit is to . take the plunge and measure future profit. Unfortunately in our industry it generally takes a full year to accurately
measure profitability changes resulting from a price adjustment or hike. To further muddy things, often the cause of changes in profitability cannot be isolated to just one thing. Once the CPI is known , my ultimate pricing decision relies on a variety of quantitative measurements and qualitative observations: (1) what was our price adjustment Last year and what was its effect on profitability? (2) what are the ~ continue on p.24

• • BUSINESS ~ conti nued from p.22 recent experiences of other clubs' price adjustments and their effect on profitability? (3) have there been any local changes in our environment (new competition, for instance)? (4) have there been any macro economic changes in the region or nation? (5) has our company's product quality improved or slid? What I have learned from the rear view mirror (remaining fully aware that the past
industry is generally underpriced. Also , for 32 years, my company has pushed the pricing envelope in Cincinnati and that strategy has been to our advantage. Counterpoints and cautions: economic situations vary greatly across our nation so what works in Cincinnati may not work in Colorado Springs. Furthermore, I feel certain that our national economy is NOT as strong as the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics), our
nterpoints and cautions: economic situations vary greatly across our nation so what works in Cincinnati may not work in Colorado Spri s, does not guarantee the future) is that, over the years, our industry has been timid, not aggressive in pricing. I know that those clubs that seem to be the most timid have seemed to degrade and the most vital and profitable clubs have pushed the pricing envelope. That leads me to believe our
elected politicians, the Fed (Federal Reserve Bank) and the mainstream media would like us to believe. Additionally, an unforeseen event could appear that would cause the consumer to cut back (such as 9/ 11 or 1987 stock market crash). All said, one would be a fool to dismiss the possibility that perhaps
the consumer might turn his/ her back to a price adjustment or hike. Bottom line: You must weigh it all and decide for yourself. However, just remember, both sides of the coi n carry risk. Here is my closing thought, I believe the U.S. economy is fundamentally weaker than most realize so, yes, this time I AM nervous that the consumer might not readily accept our company's recent decision (once again) to raise prices 6% for the 2007-08 year. Yet, because I know that in an inflationary environment the failure to adjust prices is tantamount to lowering prices, I decided the risk was necessary. So, this year, just like every year at this time, I must play the waiting game to learn whether our pricing decisions caused profitability to go up, down or sideways. Good luck on your decisions. Make it a great month! X
