Using Air Cushioned Technology "Most of our injuries occur when kids get into Level 6 as they learned back tucks and front tucks. A mistake that's been made is getting them on the hard floor too quickly. So, we've moved them to the softer Air Floor which has really helped." -Andy Memme/, M&M Gymnastics Want to see the Air Floor in action? ENSURE

YOU SURVIVE I'HIS

RECESSION! By Jason M. Silverman

Here are 10 easy to follow tips to help you guarantee that YOUR GYM survives this recession! Make sure that you Properly Value the benefits Delivered to Students and their Families. It's so important in this day and age that schools value themselves appropriately --- --- -------and charge enough tuition! By doing this, your gym is able to provide your students the best possible experience that they can have. Schools that charge an appropriate tuition can: cover and pay all their bills (how many times have you heard the story about a school having to close because the owner just couldn't make the rent?), afford to keep their facility clean and updated with new and safe equipment, staff the school appropriately with talented and professional staff so that the level of service may remain high and nobody gets burned out by having to continually "spin all of the plates," allow the owner to live the quality of life you truly deserve to live! Please don't make the mistake of dropping your prices right now - all this does is take away from the bottom line .

Focus on the Positive mental benefits as well as the physical aspect of the sport (and let the world know about it!) As coaches and teachers, we have the ability I:.:;;::.:!;:::;:;::::;:;::=:J to he Ips hap e and b u i Id the

futures of our students . It's vitally important to focus on the positive mental and emotional aspects that our students are also enjoying, (in addition to the amazing physical skill development). Doesn't your school also pride itself on building better people . .. in addition to better athletes? Wouldn't you agree that your students are developing courage, respect, integrity, perseverance, indomitable spirit, trust and a million other powerful life skills at your gym? If you 're progressive enough to go the extra mile and employ a top notch character development system to help you build and grow your school DON 'T KEEP IT A SECRET - Tell the world how you can help!!!

INCREASE Your Marketing. In a other countries as well), top level executives are time when many school owners bringing in coaches to help them achieve the have watched the news, gotten goals they've set for themselves. It's amazing scared and then subsequently to me just how few folks in our industry have STOPPED THEIR MARKETING followed suit. Big mistake. Taking advantage (because they feel that they of a Specialized Coach/Consultant can be the can't afford it!), now is the time best move you can make. Let's face it, we all to go the other way. Cutting down on your have some skill sets to improve upon - why not marketing creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. find somebody who can help us to build the You don't invest money in marketing because skills we need and improve our businesses by you don't think you can afford it then your lead bringing in their expertise to help us? flow of potential students dries up because you haven't been marketing then you really can't Take The Plunge and Get Some afford to market then you start losing current Help! This year, I've seen many students and wind up having very little, if any, small school owners try to do it income. Now is the time to be marketing ... as - all themselves . Ouch! At some long as you actually know what you're doing. I - point in time, you absolutely strongly urge you to take a good, honest look - NEED some help. prospects), Management (how to maintain the systems that run the business), Money (how to collect, save, invest and properly use the funds brought into the business), Deliverables (how to teach classes, how to speak with students and parents, etc) . The good news is that many of these systems are available in a variety of places for purchase. Should you want to do it yourself (and many people do) make sure that you take the time to do it right! Documenting each of these systems at your school allows you to have help running your business exactly as you 'd do it yourself.

Be Open to New Ideas! While there are many aspects of business that never change, there are a zillion more that get stale as old bread . I have personally spoken with dozens t::::::::-t~_:::::::::::.:::1 of school owners that are still running their schools like schools were run 30 years ago. While I can respect their passion for tradition , I feel like they are missing out on a great deal of success and causing themselves an enormous amount of undue stress. Some of the exercises that should probably be updated include : (a) payment systems - some of these aren 't using a tuition system like JackRabbit!, (b) staffing systems - some of these folks have no idea where their next employee will come from, (c) tuition systems - some of these folks are barely charging enough to keep the lights on , let alone provide for their own families, (d) marketing systems - some of these folks aren't doing anything but a poorly wr itten yellow pages ad where their logo takes up over 50% of the ad - I could go on and on here - but you get the picture, right? What are 3 ways that YOU intend to learn the most up to date information for your business? 1.) Go to National Congress 2. 3. Use the Systems Available to You to Automate Your Marketing. Let's face it folks ... time's are changing. Technology now affords us amazing opportunities to automate many

8

TECHNIQUE. MAY 2009

marketing systems . How many of the hundreds of automated marketing systems have YOU implemented in your school? It 's easy for school owners now to have sales driven websites with auto responders that help drive students into the school 24 x 7. With a tiny bit of work and some very inex pensive software, you can now have automated follow-up systems in place so that no prospect ever " Falls Through The Cracks" again. It's imperative that people know how to use today 's tools to build tomorrow 's business! Some of the tools that should be in your school building arsenal include: a prospect i ng website, a full sequence of auto -responding e-mails, a blog, videos for marketing, articles for marketing, teleconfe rences and webinars for prospecting or upgrading students, and about a zillion others too numerous to mention .

Turn off the News! Alright, we 've all seen it and we know that the media thrives on bad news . Instead of watching another report on how "The sky is fall i ng," simply take that time and focus on the positive development of your business. The more you can avoid being bombarded with negativity, the better your chance to thrive in this environment.

Ashley Eubanks & Juan Gonzalez, PhD., CSCS, HFI Periodization training is a method to organize volume, intensities, and cycles of training for a sport throughout the season. It is a process of training an athlete in an incremental manner from the post season to peak performance in competitions. The purpose of this article is to show how periodization training can be utilized in Acrobatic Gymnastics to develop a highly organized training program. The periodization table and accompanying graph presented here can be of benefit to those athletes competing at the National level. The macrocycle, as seen in the top row of Figure 1.0, comprises the entire acrobatics season. Mesocycles divide the macrocycle into more specific training periods lasting anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Figure 1.0 arranges this

particular Acrobatic training program into seven mesocycles, and outlines the appropriate training modules which should occur within those mesocycles. The smallest incremental training period is the microcycle, which breaks down mesocycles into periods ranging from a few days to one or two weeks. Microcycles are used to structure specific daily - weekly workouts which will increase in intensity over the length of the macrocycle. Of course though, microcycle training depends on individual athletes and the coach's preference of training. Microcycles are not included in illustrations due to this level of detail and variability. When using the periodization table in Figure 1.0, or one produced on your own, it should be noted that it will

need to allow for some variations in the training schedule. This is because Acrobatic Gymnastics is a sport with two entirely different types of athletes, bases and flyers/ tops. For instance, while bases are aiming for muscular hypertrophy, it is more important that a flyer builds lean muscle mass and increases in flexibility. Therefore when designing a periodization program as a coach for your own team, it is important to acknowledge these differences in the athletes and allow for base specific and top specific training. The periodization outline in Figure 1.0 incorporates this concept with the 6th and 7th rows of the table. For most teams the last row of the table will be the primary focus of their training since it outlines the appropriate progression of acrobatic pair/ group skills. The accompanying line graph, Figure 2.0, is a visual representation of training intensities during the season. Figure 2.0 includes fluctuations in training intensity during

the in-season portion of the graph. This undulating training is beneficial due to the length of the competition season in Acrobatic Gymnastics.Training athletes by thi s model allows for a peaking of skills right before a competition, followed by a temporary reduction in training intensities after which training intensities will resume to insure a higher peak for successive competitions. It has been shown that incorporating undulating training for sports with longer competition seasons helps to prevent fatigue and overtraining during the season. In addition this method may aid in reducing the occurrence of overuse injuries. By combining the organizational concepts in Figure 1.0 and Figure 2.0 you will be able to build a successful and structured training program for your athletes that will minimize over training and insure them to peak in their technique level at the appropriate time during the competition season . 1\

Open Book Management: Team Pricing, Part 2 In Part 1 I sought to make the case in favor of an Open Book approach to pricing Team . The grounding philosophy behind our approach can be summed up by thi s quote: "reasonable people, given the same information, will come to the same conclusion." Over the years, many gym club owners ha ve voiced to me this lament: "if the parents only knew how much it cost to run the team they wouldn't complain so much ." To that, I can only respond, well, duh ... give 'em the information! Below, I have sketc hed out for you a formula for calculating a TRUE breakeven on your team . If you get confused, there is help at the end of the article. I tell you how to get a pdf of Kids First's calculations. Many gym club owners mi staken ly think that if team tuition covers coaching wages they are breaking even. Hardly! .. In many gym clubs (Kids Fir st included) 'overhead' equals or even exceeds the coaching wages! Here is Kids First's formula for calculating Team fee s breaking-e ve n including a hypothetical example. As sume this is a typical gymnastics school with an 8:1 rat io and having a Team, rec classes, preschool classes, tumbling cla sses, birthday partie s and maybe a cheer sq uad or two, all operating out of the same gymnastics facility:

1. Calculate your YEARLY OVERHEAD.

Using your year end P&L statement, sim ply tally ALL of your business expenses and MINUS your coaching and teaching wages. DO lea ve in any and all admin hour s: Hypothetical example: $400,000. 2. Calculate YEARLY STUDENT HOURS . Using your enrollment data , program by program , add up all of the training hour s for all who use the gym. Typically, you wo uld see so mething like thi s: C ___ rec . students X 1 hour) + C--level 4s X the number of training hours/ wk) + C ___ le ve l 5s X the number of training hours/wk), etc . Do the sa me thing for preschool, cheer, tumbling, birthday parties-ALL students who use the gymnastics hall. Thi s sum will be a weekly figure ; convert it to YEARLY STUDENT HOURS by multiplying by 52 weeks in the year or howe ver many weeks you operate. To adjust class programs for the yearly up / do wn cycle, we then mUltiply that total by 85%, an adjustment figure we ha ve arrived at empirically over the years . Hypothetical example: 100,000 st. hrs. per year. 3. Calculate FI XED OVERHEAD/ STUDENT/ HOUR : Di vide #1 by #2. $400 ,000 .;. 100,000 st.h rs. = $4.00/ st. / hr. Remember, coaching wage ha s NOT yet been included.

~ -~ Small Business

I Ilf) f)')'

, (~l'!~!~

Jeff Metzger USA Gymnastics Business Development Partner President, GymClub Owners Boot Camp President, Kids First Sports Center

4. Calculate GROUP OVERHEAD/ HOUR. Multiply #3 X 8 students. $4.00/ st./hr. X 8st. = $32.00/hr. group overhead. 5. Identify your AVERAGE HOURLY COACHING WAGE from your payroll record s. Don 't forget to add in a multiplier for EE benefits not pre viously considered in the overhead Fed and state P/ R taxes, W/ C, FICA, health, dental, vaca tion , 401K, employee discounts, etc. A good multiple for full benefits for an Ohio club offering full benefits is +24% . $16.00/hr. + 24% = $19.84/hr, rounded to $20/ hr. 6. Calculate TOTAL GROUP COST PER HOUR. Add #4 and #5 . $32 .00/ hr. + $20/ hr. = $52/ hr. total group cost. 7. Calculate BREAK-EVEN PER STUDENT PER HOUR . Di vide #6 by yo ur teaching ratio. $52/ hr . .;. 8 st. = $6.50/s t./hr. Entry level athletes partially subsidi ze upper le ve l athletes. Charging a $6.50/hr tuition is not too difficult for entry le vel athletes but doing s o for a 20 hour per we ek athlete wo uld require a $560/ mo . tuition, a deal breaker for most clubs. That means , for Team to break even as a whole, you must charge more for entry le vel athletes and less for upper lev e l ath letes. X

IIExperience the Business Behind the Magic" with Disney Institute Disney's Approach to Leadership Excellence Today's successful leaders work with their teams to provide vision and to set goals, as well as to encourage involvement and accountability. Walt Disney himself was a firm believer in this style of leadership so the DisneylandÂŽ Resort was opened with his innovative methods and unique vision in mind. This program will teach you to: effectively communicate your vision and examine personal methods for inspiring others; experience successful Disney processes and the organizational structure that supports them; examine the strategies Disney leaders employ to keep their teams constantly improving and reaching new goals; and develop leadership action steps that will assist you in analyzing your organizational vision and individual leadership behaviors.

Disney's Approach to Quality Service The long-standing reputation Disney Theme Parks and Resorts has for incredible service and friendly employees is not magic, it is sound ideology consistently applied in business. Through this Disney Institute program, we will show you the importance of attention to detail and how we train our Cast Members (employees) to treat our Guests (customers) as VIPS.

\'

We will also help you to: anticipate the needs, wants and emotions of your customers in order to exceed their service expectations; bring consistency to your organization by establishing quality standards; design a delivery system that focuses on the employees, environment and processes that enhance quality service; and create a service plan that integrates quality standards and delivery standards that focus on exceeding family expectations.

OFFICIAL CHANGES FOR THE 2009-13 WOMEN'S JR. OLYMPIC CODE OF POINTS The 2009-2013 Women's JO Code of Points will be ready for purchase by June 1st, 2009 . I. GENERAL INFORMATION

Philosophy Considering the overall decline in numbers of optional athletes throughout the country and in an attempt to return to the original linear structure of the JO Program , the JO Committee reevaluated the philosophy of the overall competitive structure. The philosophy is to provide a linear structure of the competitive levels in which each level prepares gymnasts for future endeavors. A. Developmental Levels Levell-Beginner Developmental Level 2-Intermediate Developmental Level 3-Advanced Developmental Level B. Competitive Compulsory Levels Level 4 - Beginner Level 5 - Intermediate Level 6 - Advanced C. Competitive Optional Levels

Level Level Level Level

7 - Beginner 8 - Beginner/ Intermediate 9 - Intermediate/ Advanced 10 - Advanced

The following explains the specific philosophy for each of the optional levels: Level 7: This Beginner Optional level is the introduction to the construction of optional routines, using skills and sequences. • Restricted difficulty (only f{s and B's) + selected C's on Bars only (1/ 2 pirouette, clear-hip circle, clear hip circle 1/2 are exceptions on UB) * • 10.0 Start Value • No compositional requirements • Emphasis on basic optional skills performed with excellent execution & artistry • Preparing for future endeavors Level 8: The Beginner/Intermediate Optional level is the continuation of Optional routine development. • Restricted difficulty (only A's & B's and C dance on BB/ FX) plus selected C's on Bars (1/ 2 pirouette, clear hip circle, clear hip circle 1/2) * • Start value is 10.0 - No Opportunity to earn bonus • Use of compositional requirements • Emphasis on execution & artistry • Preparing for future endeavors Level 9: The Intermediate/Advanced Optional level is a continuation of routine development, using a higher proficiency

of technical mastery. • Restricted difficulty to A, B & C elements only plus a maximum of 1 D per event (which is awarded "(" credit). * • Start value is 9.70 with opportunity to earn 0.30 bonus through connections only • Use of compositional requirements • Emphasis on execution & artistry • Preparing for future endeavors Level 10: The Advanced Optional level is the pinnacle of the Jr. Olympic Program , emphasizing the technical mastery of skill and art. • Unrestricted difficulty • Start Value is 9.50 with opportunity to earn 0.50 bonus through connections and D/ E skills (same as present system) • Use of compositional requirements • Emphasis on execution & arti stry • Preparing for future endeavors * Unallowable elements that are performed (unallowable C's in

L 7/ 8 and additional D's/E's in L 9) will receive no value part credit and will be given a 0.50 deduction each . BONUS FOR LEVEL 9 AND/ OR 10: Bonus for connections and D/ E skills will be awarded regardless if 0.30 or more in execution was deducted - unless a fall occurs (0 .50). This will change the focus from "whether to give it or not" to the actual execution of the skill/combination. This is similar to what is being done in FIG. II. VAULT

A. There will be a separate Vault Value chart for each Optional level. B. There will be NO changes to Level 7. C. Level 8 Vault values have changed for most of the twisting vaults. C. All 10.0 vaults from the current Level 9/ 10 Vault chart will NOT be allowed at Level 9 beginning August 1, 2009. D. Many vaults will have a higher value at Level 9 than at Level 10 Examples: Handspring -Front salto tucked will be 10.0; Tsukahara layout & Yurchenko Layout will be 10.0) E. Most of the Level 10 vault values will remain the same as the current chart, with the exception of the twisting without salto vaults, which have been lowered. F. For Level 10 only, there will be a select group of 10.00 SV Vaults (if performed successfully-without a fall) that will receive a 0.10 Bonus. III. BARS A. Special Requirements: 1. Level 7 a. One Cast (min. of 45° from VERTICAL) b & c. Two clear circling elements (no hips touching the bar) - one must be a "B" value clear circle - one must be a clear circle from Groups 3, 6 or 7 d. Salto dismount, minimum of A 2. Level 8 No Change from current rules 3. Level 9 No Change from current rules 4. Level 10 a. One Flight Element, minimum "(" value

(This was changed back to the current standard at the March 2009 Conference caU) 2. Clear Hip circles below horizontal will be awarded "A" value 3. The following elements listed in the new FIG Code have been added to the JO Code with the following values: New 'T' Elements from FIG a. Clear pike circle bkwd with hecht flight to hang on HB

V. FLOOR EXERCISE A. Special Requirements All Floor Special Requirements will remain the same as the current cycle for Level 7-10, except the existing dance series SR that requires a minimum of two directly connected leaps/j umps. The new Dance Passage SR has been revised in March of 2009 to: A dance passage with a minimum of two different Group 1 elements, directly or indirectly connected, one of which is a leap (one foot take-off) requiring a 180° cross or side split position. • An indirect connection would allow for running steps, small leaps, hops, chasses, assembles, or chaine turns between the two dance elements. No acro elements, pauses, or stops are allowed . • The object is to create a flowing, large traveling movement pattern regardless of the direction of each locomotor movement (fo rwa rd/ sidewa rd/ ba ckwa rd). • No turns are permitted because they are stationary. Chaine turns (1/ 2 turns on two feet) are allowed because they are traveling steps. • Leaps and hops may land on one or both feet as the first and/ or second element in the dance passage. • Jumps (take-off two feet) must land on one foot as the first element and may land on one or two feet for the second (or last) element. • The second (or last) element may also land in a prone or splitsit position.

C. New Bonus for Level 10: Two "(" elements from Groups 3, 6 or 7 that are connected do not require turn or flight to receive Connection Value. • If two skills from Groups 3, 6, or 7 are done in connection, they must be different to receive bonus Example: Clear hip circle to HS + Clear hip circle to HS = 0 CV Clear hip circle to HS + Stalder circle to HS ':' +0.10 CV

B. Element Values: 1. Plain stretch/arch jump was deleted from the JO Code (under #1.112) 2. Any leap with 360° turn and 180° split will receive "C" value 3. Switch-leg leap with 1/ 1 (360°) turn raised to D 4. 1/ 1 (360°) turn with free leg held upward with hand at a 180° split position = "B" 5. Ph (540°) turn with free leg held upward with hand at a 180° split position = "("

IV. BALANCE BEAM A. Special Requirements: There will be NO changes to the BB Special Requirements for Levels 7-10 for the 2009-2013 cycle.

C. Connection Value Bonus

B. New Connection Value principles on Beam: 1. 2-acro flight element connection (excluding mount or dismount): B+ C-salto = +0 .10 CV 2.Turns: A-turn + C-turn (or the reverse) receives +0 .10 CV C.Element Value Changes-effective August 1, 2009. 1.Straddle Jump starting and finishing in a cross position (facing length of beam) will be valued at "B" 2. Straddle jump in side position and all straddle jumps with 1/4 turn will be valued at "(" 3. Back Layout Step-outs will be valued at "(" • Gainer back layout step-out will remain valued at "D" for difficulty and connection bonus 4.
