strong CORE is a fitness buzz word these days. Parents go to the gym, they work out and can understand when we talk about the importance of a strong CORE in children. Parents don't always know or care that some of your drills may lead to a clear hip or giant circle someday. They will care that you have told them that these are life skills for healthy bodies and fit kids as well as teaching cartwheels. They will find the value in this. Perhaps most importantly, a child's self esteem, self confidence, mental discipline, performance, and coordination can all be expected to improve as a result of strength and conditioning

A 6

training . Exercise and proper training have a positive effect on a child's cardiopulmonary/cardio respiratory status and bone mineral density, helping to reduce the risk of serious illnesses in adulthood, such as heart disease and osteoporosis, and diabetes. It can also aid in body composition and the loss of body fat, countering childhood obesity. The body's" core" refers to the muscles around the abdomen, pelvis, and back. This core is in the body's center of gravity. As a result, it plays a role in almost all activities. From sitting to standing, walking to running, the core muscles are at work stabilizing

our body from the force of gravity. All this is a by-product of gymnastics class. Why not advertise this important benefit to your customers?

Here are some interesting facts about Core Strength to share with your customers and staff: •

• •

People with adequate CORE strength have good bone density - gymnasts by far have better bone density than other athletes. By the time children are 18-20 years old, they have acquired 90% of their peak bone mass. Age 25-30 is peak. Adolescence is where you save for your bone retirement - call it your "calcium bank" An impact sport like gymnastics is important as it contributes to your calcium bank.

Here are some examples of poor CORE strength that you may recognize in children in class: •

Tire easily - how many times have you had a child in class who needs to lay on the mat half way through class.

Poor posture - Look at those child ren who don't stand up straight and hang their head. Prone to injury - How about the child who always says, " Ouch , that hurts," or always seems to have a pain . Poor self-esteem - Children who can't look you in the eye, or always say, " I can't."

with better form, so you train with appropriate technique. Review your lesson plan so you know you have included a strength activity at every event, or some games to work on the CORE.

Here are some ideas for fun CORE activities:

Make it a GAME! • Pass a beach ball around the circle using only your feet • Roll a ball under the whole class as they walk their feet up the wall and hold it to make a tunnel. • Try a frisbee push for the whole class . It will work on arms, legs, as well as core and is fun! Fig. 1 Frisbee Push Parent and Child class can have fun CORE activities too! Magic Carpet Ride Giving the child a ride makes for smiles as they work on keeping the center of gravity upright. Tipping over is part of the fun! Fig. 2 Magic Carpet Ride

Positive ways to include fun CORE training for young children in gymnastics class •

To keep exercising fun for young children , limit the number of attempts they do. Counting how old you are is a good way to limit your repetitions. If you are 4, do fou r sit ups! It's better to do a few repetitions and then move on to another thing, and then come back and repeat. This keeps young ones engaged

Activities that hold a shape wo rk on CORE strength. Here are some examples:

Wheelbarrow Walk There are lots of ways to play • Walk out keeping a tight body • Hold • Walk back • Do a push up Fig . 4 Wheelbarrow

Press Up, Count to 4 Make a straddle press on a block on the beam or on the floor. Lift up and down four times. For a challenge, lift up and hold for four if you are 4. It's a great activity for the whole class at once while sitting on a beam . Fig . 9 Press Up Hold and Balance Too hard? Balance on an elbow instead of hand . Still too hard? Split legs apart fo r a more stable base . Fig . 10 Hold and Balance All of these activities are easy for class children to try. Give them a challenge, talk about CORE strength and how it leads to gymnastics skills as well as fitness .

Try Bottoms UP Roll up and back or roll up and hold . This is more challenging than the wheelbarrow walk. Fig. 5 Bottoms Up Straight Body Hold Lift and hold . Too easy? Try to rollover and hold , or move the mats further apart. Fig .6 Straight Body Hold Hold the shape while you pick up the toys Balance in the push up position, lif!: an arm to pick up a bean bag and put in a bucket. Try the other arm, too. For variety, have them toss the bean bags at a target. Fig . 7 Pick up Toys Hold the shape and Hi 5 your partner It's always fun to have a friend . Re-thin king and updating our teachers by giving them the reasons why we do these activities for young children can help sell your program's benefits to parents from the fitness standpoint. Try and include core strength activities in every lesson . Look at these as "Life Skills" for healthy bodies. Share this with parents to show the value of gymnastics and your program! eorge Nissen, recognized as the inventor of the modern trampoline , died April 7 at the age of 96 in San Diego, Calif., from complications from pneumonia. Nissen also helped grow worldwide interest in trampoline through his equipment, ex hibitions and tr avels . His dream of having trampoline in the Olympic Games became a reality at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. "George Nissen was a true sports pioneer," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnasti cs. "He was loved and respected for his many accomplishments and contributions . His vision, innovations and passion sowed the seeds for trampoline's worldwide popularity today. His input was felt by the many li v es he touched on a global basis . " "George Nissen was a personal friend and hero of mine," said Peter Vidmar, chairman of the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors and 1984 Olympic gold medalist . "He was passionate and tireless in his enthusiasm for promoting the benefits of gymnastics as a foundation for o v erall fitness. I sat next to George during the finals of the 2000 Olympic Trampoline finals . He was so proud that the spo rt that he had pioneered had not only become an Olympic d iscipline, but that its appeal was truly global. He was famous for holding a rock solid handstand well into his 80s and I was privileged to be a part of many demonstrations with George. What I will miss most about George is his k indness . All of us in the gymnastics community will miss him, but hi s

legacy will last forever." Nissen got his inspiration for the trampoline when watching trapeze artists at a circus rebound on the safety net . He was a member of his high school's tumbling team and learned to dive at the local YMCA. Nissen thought adapting the safety net concept could be helpful in his training .

"The passing of George Nissen brings to the surface feelings of admiration and gratitude, which I have long borne for this truly great man, George possessed extraordinary imagination and courage, tools which in his hands gave shape to an apparatus, a discipline, and ultimately an Olympic dream. I will remember him for having adorned sport in general and gymnastics in particular with an original flair; for having added an aerial dimension that has enhanced the sport gesture as a whole. He will be missed." - Prof Bruno Grandi FIG President

Your kids will never turn up their noses at Tyson Chicken Nuggets. You'll love them too. They're quick and easy to make, plus they have zero trans fats, no artificial ingredients, no fillers. And they're guaranteed fussy eater-pleasers.

During college, Nissen and his coach Larry Griswold developed the prototype for the modern trampoline in 1934. The initial trampoline was heavy, and Nissen recognized the need to modify the design to make it lighter and more portable. fie competed for the University of Iowa and won three collegiate titles before graduating in 1937 with a business degree. Upon graduation, Nissen teamed up with two friends and formed the "Three Leonardos." They traveled the country performing hand-balancing acts and a comedy tumbling routine at fairs, carnivals, etc . Eventually, their travels extended to Mexico, where Nissen learned the Spanish word for diving or spring board, "trampolin," and decided to trademark the English version of the word, trampoline, for his rebounding equipment. Trampoline has evolved into the generic word used to describe the equipment. In 1941, he and Griswold opened Griswold Nissen Trampoline and Tumbling Co. in Cedar Rapids , Iowa . During World War II, the military used trampolines to help train pilots and other personnel to help them learn how to orient themselves in the air. In 1943, Nissen joined the Navy. After the war, he traveled the world promoting his equipment and the sport of "rebound tumbling." In 1947, Nissen started ha v ing "rebound tumbling" competitions . The sport eventually became known as trampoline. Nissen held more than 40 patents. His company expanded to include gymnastics equipment and other products. Nissen sold the company, which went out of business in the 1980s . In 1971, he and Griswold started the U.S. Tumbling and Trampoline Association, which later split into two organizations . One of those eventually became a part of USA Gymnastics in 1999 when the sport became a part of the Olympic program. Today, two competitive events bear his name, including the Nissen Cup in Switzerland . In 1966, Nissen established the Nissen Award, which is now known as the Nissen-Emery Award. The annual award recognizes the top male senior collegiate gymnast and is presented during the annual Men's NCAA National Championships. Nissen was born Feb . 1, 1914, in Blairstown, Iowa . He married a Dutch acrobat, Annie, and they had two daughters, Dagmar and Dian . He and his wife moved to San Diego to be closer to one of their daughters. He was surrounded by his family when he died . X

"In the 1960s, I requested that George Nissen design a mat that could easily be folded up and non-intrusively strapped to the wall of our competition gym. George immediately went to work and soon came up with the roll-fold design. He was so excited about this new design that he personally made the trip from Iowa to Connecticut to set up the mat: George certainly met the needs for U.S. gymnastics, not to mention the design, manufacture and worldwide distribution of trampoline which, as we know, was fairly recently accepted as one of the Olympic sports ... George Nissen was and will remain a true legend in our sport. " - Abie Grossfeld

MANAGING ANTERIOR KNEE PAIN IN GYMNASTICS ~

o you or one of your gymnasts experience knee pain when running, jumping or landing? Is the knee pain centered around the knee cap (patella)? Do you feel a grinding sensation of the outside part of the knee cap? If one or more of these are true you might be suffering from a condition called patella femoral syndrome, or PFS. In layman's terms, this means that the patella for which it is known in medical terms, is not moving properly through the groove at the bottom end of the thigh bone (femur). See Fig. 1.

of these factors that causes the PFS. Determining which of these issues are causing your PFS can be broken down into three easy evaluations. For the VMO, have the gymnast sit with his/her legs straight. The gymnast should point his/her toes towards the ceiling and tighten the thigh muscle (quadriceps muscle) . Now feel the VMO. A strong VMO should feel very taut. A good rule of thumb for how taut, is place your thumb and pinky finger together and pinch them together as hard as you can. Now feel the muscle at the base of the thumb. See how that does not give? That is how taut the VMO should be. Now compare both VMOs. Is one bigger than the other? Is one harder to depress than the other? If this is true the athlete may have a weak VMO (Fig. 2) .

Fig. 1 PFS can be caused by a number of different factors. We will focus on the three major factors which cause this condition. The first is weakness in the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) which is the inner most quadriceps muscle. It is the one that makes the tear drop shape just above and to the inside of the patella . The second is tightness in the vastus lateralis or the outer most quadriceps muscle. Lastly, is a weakness in the gluteus medius or the hip muscle that takes the leg away from your body from the mid line. Usually it is more than one

Now evaluate the vastus lateralis or the outside quadriceps muscle (Fig . 3). Have the gymnast lay on his/her side with the affected leg on top . Once he/she is relaxed feel his/her outside quadriceps. You will have to push and feel moving from the top of the outside quadriceps down to the table. Does the muscle feel tight, even though he/ she is relaxed? Does pushing on that part of the

muscle cause the gymnast discomfort? When the gymnast tries to stretch the quadriceps, does he/ she feel the stretch in the outer part of the muscle first? These are all signs of a tight vastus lateralis. For the final test have the gymnast stand on one leg and squat (Fig. 4). The knee should stay over the foot and should not pass the toes when he/she squats. When he/she squats does his/her knee turn inward? If the knee moves inward past the foot or forward past the toes this is a sign of a weak gluteus medius. Another good sign to test the gluteus medius is to watch the gymnast's landings off of an apparatus. When he/she lands is his/her knees pointed towards one other? If they are, this shows signs of a weak gluteus medius muscle. Now that we have figured out the problem, here are some simple ways to help combat them. For the VMO have the gymnast do a toe out straight leg raise (Fig . 5). Have the athlete sit with the unaffected leg bent and the other straight

This fantastic and easy-to-use product was designed by a coach in need of a way to help athletes understand the tap swing that is so important to today's big swings on uneven bars and horizontal bar. with their toes pointed out at 45 degrees from the mid-line. Have the gymnast hug his/ her bent leg. Now ask the gymnast to slowly lift his/her straight leg about 6 inches while keeping his/her knee completely straight. Have him/her count to three and repeat for three sets of 10 repetitions . For the vastus lateralis you will need a foam roller to treat the muscle tightness most effectively (Fig. 6). Lay the foam roller on the ground and have the gymnast lay across it with the outside of his/her knee on the foam roller. Now have the gymnast rollover the roller with it rolling up until it almost reaches his/ her hip. Have the gymnast roll for 60 seconds. This should be done five times. The gymnast can also rotate forward on the roller to involve more of the quadriceps. There are a number of strengthening exercises for the gluteus medius. Beginning with simple exercises such as "clam shells" can greatly benefit the athlete (Fig . 7). To perform the" clam sheW' exercise, have the athlete lay on his/her side on a table. The athlete's spine should be in a neutral position with the knees bent to 90 degrees. Place a theraband around the legs just above the knees. The athlete should keep his/her feet together while "opening" the knees. This movement should be done in a slow and controlled movement. This exercise can be done in three sets of 15 repetitions. Weights can be placed on the top knee to increase the intensity of this exercise . Next we can progress to a single leg step-up with an elastic cord to activate the VMO. This should be done with the knee in line with the toes and the knee should not go forward past the toes (Fig. 8). These exercises are the first steps on your way to recovery. As pain decreases and strength increases the gymnast can return to sport specific skills and conditioning . If things are not improving over a period of two to three weeks, seek the advice of a Certified Athletic Tra iner or physician for a more in depth evaluation . 1(

路 &entlon HOW Lower Re II Might Mean a Stronger Business

Jeff Metzger President, GymClub Owners Boot Camp President, Kids First Sports Center

want to share my thoughts on what is proving to be a 'controversial' metric-retention. In my 'early years' I hung my hat on the retention metric, even screaming its importance at the USAIGC seminars (remember those?!) . Today, my thoughts have c hanged . Below is a question from a Boot Camp Grad about retention as a metric and my answer.

I

Question: Hi Jeff. We are currently working on a business plan for a start-up . I was wondering if there is a target number and / or industry average for retention from session to session? Thanks , and hope to be talking to you again soon! Answer: No, there is no standard. Certainly retention is tied directly to your club's ability to build relationships. What many owners fail to realize is that your club's retention also depends greatly on your business model. In the early days of our club it was purely 'pyramidal' in shape, training all of our students as if they were going to go into the competitive stream. We did a good job and our retention reflected that, averaging about 90+%, Term to Term. It is also import a nt to note, our enrollment was modest . Today, our retention now av e rage s c loser to 75-80 % , term to term yet our relationship building is c e rtainly far better. WHY? The majority of our students are not serious gymnasts; they are 'in' a few terms, 'out' a term or two and back 'in'

again . (Our teams remain an ex ception to that of course; but our teams represent a mere 10% of our enrollment.) In essence, over the years we learned a very important lesson: there are a heck of a lot more 'everyday kids ' in the world than there are 'gymnasts' and families with 'everyday kids' do NOT want to take gymnastics every month of the year. Consequently, we shifted our business model to be consistent with our families' desire for flexibility. In ex change, we got loyalty. Said another way, once our company made it easy to 'take a break' and 'come back in', we attracted a greater number of clients and our business thrived while all the while our reter ~WJ.II~r.~t~~j~~~~.~I~ e~~I~l~w~I~. 4-~~~.c~_Y~__I_________~ is a clsssic parado x ! Suggestion : from a customer service standpoint (building relationships and caring for your people) seek 100% retention. However, create your business model so it is easy to do business with, allowing your customers the flexibility they want for their personal schedule . Then smile as you watch your retention metric decline while your business grows . M a ke it a great month, Jeff PS I realize it may seem sudden if you are not on my BOOT CAMP mail list, due to my loss of appetite for business travel, the very last BOOT CAMP was scheduled for May 14-18 . Stay tuned to this page in future months to learn the web address for my new blog! 1\

USA Gymnastics staff attended the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAH PERD) convention held March 17-19 at the Indiana Convention Center, in Indianapolis. There were approx imately 7,000 attendees at this year's convention. USA Gymnastics reached out to the educators to remind them of the importance of bringing the basics of gymnastics back into the school's physical fitness curriculum . USA Gymnastics handed out Tyson Fitness Chal-

lenge kits to those who were interested . This year's packet included a written administrator's guide and coordinating DVD which demonstrates how to teach children the proper techniques for many basic core strengthening ex ercises, as well as a nutrition guide and exercise log . As one teacher said, "This is great! You have saved me many lesson plans!" Loree Galimore spoke with the educators about contacting a local USA Gymnastics club to provide

_I demonstrations at their schools . She directed them to go to the USA Gymnastics web site to find a member club in their area . One of the most inexpensive growth opportunities for a gymnastics club is to reach out within its community and schedule demonstrations at sc hools, health fairs and other children's venues. Olympians Bridget Sloan and Samantha Peszek attended the "Spirit of the Olympics" session, lead by Lucinda Williams Adams, a 1960 gold medalist and former president of AAHPERD . They spoke to the educators about their experiences as an Olympian. At the annual Hall of Fame banquet, Shannon Miller was inducted in to the Hall of Fame for her work as an accomplished athlete and passionate advocate for a healthy, physically active and balanced life .

IDEAS FOR CLUB OWNERS ,/ Take Initiative. Call the preschools, elementary, middle and high school physical education teachers in your area. Offer to host an Open House, Teacher's Day Out. Share your expertise in safety/risk management and have your athletes demonstrate exercises that focus on proper form, core strength, and flexibility presented in a fun and safe manner. Feel free to use the Tyson Fitness Challenge packet as a model for your exercises. Provide the teachers with a free lesson plan! Copy

information from the Tys on Fitness Challenge administrators guide, include the "station" settings which are perfect for any school. Be sure to include information about the importance of goal setting and how chi ldren gain self esteem and concentration through basic gymnastics skills. ,/ Visit the schools in your area. Encourage your athletes to talk to their physical educat ion teacher about the possibility of allowing your club to perform for the student body. Be sure that your demonstration includes the various skill levels in a fun manor. Pass out flyers or other marketing materials to the students. ,/ Attend a Summer Camp. Summer camps are perfect for those athletes that need to maintain flexibility, cardia health, balance and upper body strength during the summer. Sports such as cheerleading, football , hockey and baseball are perfect for an offseason training program. Contact the coaches at your local high school and explain the benefits of basic gymnastics for their athletes. Ask if you can distribute flyers in exchange for displaying their team banner at your club . You may even offer a team discount for an 8 week session! Don't forget that many teachers are parents as well. Th ey may want to enroll their children in your classes so that they can take advantage of the parent/chi ld quality class time, or enjoy quality time with their spouse during your "Parent's Night Out" events."t; ~
