We are really Looking forward to thi s year's Visa Championships and USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show in Hartfo rd, Conn ., Aug . 10-14. Several things are being planned to blend the National Congress and Visa Championships into one giant gymnastics event and celebration, as well as some very special activities that will be announced later this month. We expect this to be among the biggest and best championship weeks ever.

Our partners in Hartford have gone all out to welcome USA Gymnastics. The business community is creating special offers and opportunities in one of America's truly historic cities. Our theme has been labeled "Go Hartford!" and is designed to help you enjoy your experience throughout the week. Kiosks will provide information on Hartford's special attractions, along with special offerings for USA Gymnastics members and fans.

Everyone in Hartford will know about the event thanks to a full-scale visibility plan, and the creation of the "Pathway to Excellence," a route between the Connecticut Convention Center (site of the Congress) and the XL Center (site for artistic gymnastics) . The Old State House and its surrounding park, located in central Hartford, will be THE place to gather and socialize. The Old State House is a delightfully historic facility and will host many of our fan activities and hospitality events throughout the week of the 2010 Visa Championships and National Congress. A robust Visa Fan Fest with music, entertainment and more will be staged on the Old State House grounds. Keeping with tradition, USA Gymnastics will hold morning fitness activities on the lawn of the Old State House. Be sure to pack your workout clothes and shoes and get energized for the day. We will also be hosting local club gymnastics exhibitions and demonstrations throughout the week. I am particularly looking forward to the annual Business Conference this year. We have three special keynote speakers that will address topics of great interest to all of you : • Deirdre Breakenridge, President of Mango! Marketing, will discuss how social media changes

the way that a business must think and operate. This is one of the most powerful marketing and media forces today, and Ms. Breakenridge is a renowned speaker and author on this topic. • Scott Willy, Cofounder of 360 Group, will share thoughts on building your brand and the value

of cooperative advertising in today's challenging environment. Mr. Willy and his company have worked closely with USA Gymnastics in the development of our advertising campaign, "Life needs .. ." • Scott HimseL, LegaL counseL for USA Gymnastics, will review some of the most important

aspects of risk management for club owners. A respected litigator from Baker and Daniels, Mr. Himsel is keenly aware of some of the challenges facing the gymnastics community. Of course, the Hall of Fame Luncheon , the United States Gymnastics Supplier's Association Mega Raffle in the Exhibit Hall and all of the great competition in men's, women's, rhythmic, acro and trampoline and tumbling promise to make this a great week. We will continue to provide more details and information over the next two months. Don't miss it. Go Hartford! Go USA Gymnastics! See you in the gym ,

t 's Monday morning and the preschoo lers tak ing over the next hour of my day are lining up fo r class . As a younger coach, the mere sight of all the tiny heads bobbing up and down, awaiting my expert instruction would have sent ac id churning in my stomach . It took years for me to understand the most important reason I' m here. Today, as the little ones sit on their carpet squares, legs f lapping in the butterfly stretch, excitement fi ll ing their faces as they te ll me what exot ic location t h is flight wi ll take them on, I realized something. This isn't just any group of preschoolers, it's six very d ifferent reasons why gymnastics is the most amazing sport for kids. We move to the preschool circuit and little Jack shuffles slow ly to my station. He pushes up to a front support on his own, and I glance over at mom who gives a loud cheer, as if this were a gold medal performance. Last week she even cried. At two years old, Jack had just learned to walk and a lready logged more hours of phys ica l

6

therapy than most adults. He was diagnosed with low muscle tone as a toddler. While attending a birthday party in the gym, tiny Jack was fascinated by the co lorful equ ipment, and it was a ll the motivation he needed to cli m b the steps in front of the tumble track and step on to the bouncy surface. Not only did Jack climb for the first time in his life that day, but he also ran and loved every second of it. At 4 years old, after two years of lessons, Jack could jump off two feet, perform a forward and backward roll, and now his arms were finally strong enough to pull himself up to a support on the bar.

I An Olympic medal in gymnastics may not be in Jack's future, but he has come so far - further than any physical therapy session had gotten him - and most importantly he loves gymnastics . I move Jack along to the next station, and Courtney stands in front of me, her adorable blonde curls are such a contrast to the angry glare she almost always wears . Her arms are crossed, but she holds her tongue . I know what she wants to say, "Why didn't I get to go first? I never get to go first!" Slowly Courtney has learned the art of waiting her turn, saying please and thank you, and allowing others to receive attention from the teacher. The threat of missing a turn on the trampoline if she complained about having to wait was too big a risk for Courtney to utter her usual complaint. Mom watches carefully, eyes peering over her book as Courtney unfolds her arms and jumps up to the bar like a pro . Unlike Jack, this part is easy for her. Mom relaxes back in her chair with a sigh of relief, and a glimmer of hope that maybe in a few months they could try something else -- dance, soccer or the music program the other moms have been raving about. The possibilities are endless . At least they are now. After Courtney shifts to the next station, Patrick runs at the bar full speed . I catch him around the waist to keep him from flying

over. On the first day of class, just before lining up, Patrick was running up and down the metal bleachers while his mother, seeing a few stitches in the near future, frantically chased after him . "He just has so much energy," she had said to me. "What makes a five year-old want to try a back flip off the couch?" I just smiled and said, "You might want to consider more than one c lass a week." She decided on three! That was the bargain Patrick's mother made with the fearless little boy. He could do all the flips he wanted at the gym, but no more li ving

room gymnastics. Patrick's goal was a fe w less trips to the emergency room from accidental collisions with his coffee table . His story mimicked several great athletes in history. Drew was the opposite of Courtney. He didn't want my attention nor did he want the other children looking his way. But today, he performed his very first pullover on his own. Traditionally, when this happens, the kids ring a bell hanging from the ceiling and everyone stops to watch the performance. I don't even. ask and instead say, "Good job." But Drew leans over the bar and whispers,

"Can I ring the bell?" And I just look at him, stunned and nod my head . "Of course ." It's a huge accomplishment. Lacey is ne xt and she's the little girl I have to walk on egg shells around because everything makes her cry. She struggles with the pullover, and I know the tears will come and they do, but today she keeps going, even in her frustration . In a few weeks, perhaps she won't need to cry at all. Emily is the gem whose skills shine above the other fi ve. She's a tiny Carly or Nastia and for some coaches, kids like Emily keep them coming to the gym every day. Even I find myself fascinated when she pulls her chin to the bar effortlessly, legs glued together she flips over with such ease . She'll go far in gymnastics if that's what she chooses . If not, Emily has the building blocks needed for any sport -confidence, discipline, body control, flexibility, and strength . So there you have it. Six very different reasons why the benefits of gymnastics expand even farther than most realize . As a parent and a coach , I'm so thankful to be a part of the growth and development that happens wi th each child. Regardless of the goal when walking into that first gymnastics class, the results are almost always magical. 1\

REHABILITATION FOR

ANKLE SPRAINS St.vincen t Sports Pelformance

Ryan Harber, LAT, ATC, CSCS St. Vincent Sports Performance

nkle sprains are no stranger in the sports world. Sprains are classified into grades 1, 2, 3, which generally correspond to mild, moderate, or severe. More severe ankle sprain injuries, including complete tears of the ligaments and fractures of the bone may need different treatment and rehab than a simple ankle sprain. Athletes who have persistent symptoms should be evaluated by their doctor to ensure there is no more serious injury, such as a fracture or high ankle sprain that could be causing these problems. The most common symptoms of an ankle sprain are pain and swelling. Athletes often notice bruising over the area of injury. As gravity pulls the blood downwards, the bruising will move down the foot towards the toes in the days after the injury. See your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following: • Your foot bends at an abnormal angle. • Your foot is cool, pale, or changes color. • You feel numbness or tingling in your foot or toes that lasts after the initial injury. You you • •

should see your doctor after an ankle sprain if notice any of the following: Heard a "popping" sound at the t ime of injury. Moderate or severe pain or severe swelling or bruising around you r ankle. • Can't walk or put weight on your affected foot, or your ankle feels unstable . • You have redness, swe lling, or pain in your leg or groin . These can be signs of a blood clot.

• Rest : The first 24-48 hours after the injury is considered a critical treatment period and activities need to be curtailed . Gradually put as much weight on the involved ankle as tolerated and discontinue crutch use when you can walk with a normal gait - minimal to no pain or limp. • Ice : For the first 48 hours post-injury, ice pack and elevate the ankle sprain 20 minutes at a time every 2-3 hours. Frozen vegetables are a good alternative if you don't have access to ice! • Compression : Using an Ace bandage, wrap the ankle from the toes to the top of the calf muscle . The wrap should be snug, but not cutting off circulation to the foot and ankle . • Elevation : Keep your ankle sprain higher than your heart as often as possible .

REHABILITATION: 1. Range of Motion Exercises: Immobilization can cause significant problems after ankle sprains. ROM exercises should be implemented within 48-72 hours after injury because of the tendency of tissues to contract following trauma . • Achilles stretch: While seated or lying down , take a towel and loop it around your toes. Pull the ends of the towe l, pulling your toes upwards, and feel the stretch in the back of th e ankle . Perform this 3-4 times a day for several minutes .

TREATMENT: Early treatment of a sprain is the "RICE" method : St. Vincent Hospital and Sf. Vincent Sports Perjol7lJance in bldiOllapolis, Ind., are rfficial service providers 10 USA Gymnastics. Ca" 3 174 15-5747 or visit sportsperjonllance.stvillcent.org

• Towel Curls: Begin with foot flat on the floor. Keeping heel on floor, repetitively "scrunch up" the towel . Each time you curl your toes equals one repetition. Perform 3 sets of 20 repetitions, 3 times a day.

2. Muscle-Strengthening Exercises: Once range of motion is attained, and swelling and pain are controlled, the patient is ready to progress to the strengthening phase of rehabilitation. Strengthening of weakened muscles is essential to rapid recovery and important in preventing re-injury.

• Eversion : With pillow against wall, press outer border of foot into pillow.

• Plantarflexion: Push foot into pillow.

A. Isometric exercises: Hold 5 seconds, then relax. Repeat 5-10 times. • Dorsiflexion: With rolled pillow between feet, squeeze feet together.

B. Resisted tubing exercises: Use an elastic band that is tied to a heavy object, resistance exercises should be done in all directions. Perform 20 repetitions, 2-3 times a day.

rECHNIQUE. JUNE 2010

• Heel and Toe Walking : Walk on your toes for one minute, then on your heels for one minute. Alternating walking on your heel and toes, work up to a total of 10 minutes, 3 times a day.

3. Proprioceptive Training: Proprioception is the sense of the relative position of your body and its limbs in space . As the athlete achieves full weight-bearing without pain, proprioceptive training is initiated for the recovery of balance and postural control. • Circular Wobble Board : In sitting position, rotate board clockwise and counterclockwise using one foot and then both feet; in standing position, rotate board using one leg and then both legs . Exercises can be performed with added weight / eyes open or closed . Perform 15-20 repetitions, 2 times a day.

• Toe Raises: Stand on a stair or ledge with your heel over the edge . Stand up on your tip toes, then in a controlled manner, let the heel rest down . Repeat 10-20 times, 4 times a day.

• Walking on Different Surfaces: Walk in normal or heel-to-toe fashion over various surfaces; progress from hard, flat floor to uneven surface - perform with eyes open or closed . Walk up to 50 feet twice per day.

• Training for Return-to-Activity: Activity-specific exercises may include simply walking, jogging, or

COMMON APPEARANCE OF AN ACUTE ANKLE SPRAIN hopping . Begin at very low intensity and duration, and slowly work-up . Never suddenly increase either the intensity or duration of your activity. • Jogging : Do 50% jogging and 50% running in forward and backward directions; run in a pattern (e.g., circle, figure-eight) . Slowly increase intensity and incorporate activity-specific exercises. Increase distance in increments of 1/8th mile. • Jump Rope: Simple jumping in place or with a rope. Add side-to-side jumps and eventually single leg hops as the athlete progresses. The athlete should let pain be his/ her guide as he/ she progress through th is entire program . Once these activities can be done at full speed with no pain, athletes can resume their sport. More specific exercises can be given by a coach, certified athletic trainer, or physical therapist that is familiar with the physical demands of the sport. X

Member ClubsGet Set to Ride the Tide I sense a sea change. Have you ever watched a vibrant, well-polished Apple or McDonald's ad on TV and wished your gym club had the ad budget to produce something like it? Well, our little 'mom and pop' industry isn't there yet, but we are knocking on the door and it sure is exciting for this veteran of 35 years! As a member of the National Gymnastics Foundation Board, I am in a unique position to have first-hand knowledge of all the many positi v e things happening at USA Gymnastics for gym clubs. Some of you may not be familiar with the National Gymnastics Foundation , but the National Gymnastics Foundation was created from the energy and excitement generated by the gold medal effort of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . Proceeds from the 1984 Olympics were dispersed among the various National Governing Bodies,

and the U.S. Gymnastics Federation used its $1.4 million portion to establish the Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charitable organization .Today, the Foundation's assets total more than $5.5 m i llion . Since that time, more than $1 million has been granted to USA Gymnastics to assist in achieving its mission to encourage participation (I especially like that part of the mission) as well as the pursuit of excellence in the sport. There is a formula that limits the amount of money that can be used in any given year, and I, for one, am dedicated to see that a significant amount of said funds goes to help our nation's gymnastics clubs gain more public e x posure. It was NGF funds that made the 2008 full page USA TODAY ad possible . This summer NGF funds will help make possible a national advertising insert in Parents magazine. That is a huge WOW, and your gymnastics clubassuming it is a Member

GYMNASTICS

USA Gymnastics national advertising insert will appear in Parents magazine This fall, USA Gymnastics is publishing a national advertising insert in the September 2010 issue of Parents magazine, expanding the message delivered in the 2008 advertising insert - gymnastics is a part of our human nature, and gymnastics clubs are the very best place for young people to learn about fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The magazine should hit the newsstands in mid- to late August 2010 and has a reach of approximately 15 million people! Targeting parents, the insert reinforces the notion that some of the most common functional skills for young people are based in gymnastics. The 2010 insert features new tagl ines, "Life Needs Confidence" and "Life Needs Agility" . The four-page insert uses eye-catching pictures and text to deliver the message that children of all ages have fun participating in gymnastics. Readers will be directed to the USA Gymnastics website where they can search for a USA Gymnastics Member Club in their area, as well as learn more about the benefits of gymnastics. As a Member Club, you will receive both posters, based on the draft artwork above, and 250 complimentary copies of the insert that you may distribute in your community. You can easily create a direct association between your club and the insert by placing a label with your club information on each insert. You also may purchase additional inserts for a very affordable cost. Pricing information for additional inserts is located to the right.

Just another benefit of being a USA Gymnastics Member Club!

The three-day competition featured both All-Star individual and state team competitions for more than 900 gymnasts from the eight states in Region 8 and also included a fundraising component. The event raised $10,000 for the local Children's Miracle Network hospital. Mark Griffith, the local Children's Miracle Network representative, said, "I was truly and pleasantly surprised at the $10,000 check we were presented at the competition . This gift will be very much appreciated and put to good use!"

Debby Kornegay, the Region 8 Administrative Committee chairman, is thrilled with the new charitable connection. "As coaches and teachers, I believe it is very important that we teach our children about donating to charities. They need to learn that each of us has a responsibility to care for those who are less fortunate, and that giving can be the greatest blessing of all." ~

USA Gymnastics - Massachusetts State Administrative Committee, with the cooperation of Cape Cod Gymnastics and NAWGJ-Mass ., hosted an invitational meet for Levels 2-6 and Prep Optional called "Handstands for Haiti." We looked for over a year before we settled on Jackrabbit. It has exceeded our expectations and I would recommend Jackrabbit for anyone in the youth sports industry. " - David Holcomb "Wings Center has been using Jackrabbit since 2005 and we love it! Its' easy-to-use features are perfect for the entire range of organizations whether you are a start-up club or a large, full-service children's activity center. " - Frank Sahlein

Member ClubsGet Set to Ride the Tide Continued from p. 28 Club-is set to gain direct benefit when all Parents magazine reade rs are directed to the USA Gymnastics website to f ind a gymnastics club near their homes .

Think about the value of Member Club Membership for a moment: a modest $160 Member Club Membership will make you a direct beneficiary of a national ad campaign, one that no single gymnastics club could think of affording on its own. Assume for a moment that the Parents magazine insert directs ONE new student to your gym; assuming your entry level tuition is $15 / class, your $160 Member Club investment will generate $720, a 350% ROI (return on investment) . And that is with only ONE additional student. I know of no ot her marketing initiative that will return 350 percent.

Of course Member Club benefits don't stop there! Also included with your $160 membership: • 250 copies of the Parents magazine advertising inserts and two posters to use to associate your club with the Parents magazine initiative; • Marketing kit (value $300) ; • USA Gymnastics Member Club banner for display; • Window decal announcing your affiliation; • 40-minute promotional DVD with a looping video to play in your club's lobby;

I opened this article alluding to a sea change. The sea change is in USA Gymnastics. Over the decades I have been familiar with five administrations for our governing body. In my opinion, previous administrations have only done lip service to the notion that thriving gymnastics clubs are fundamental to our sport's success. Yes, things have certainly changed .. .this administration 'gets it!' By his own words , Steve Penny, the USA Gymnastics CEO, considers USA Gymnastics' 'client' to be gymnastics clubs and th e athletes, who are the ultimate consumers. This is music to my ears and the entire team at USA Gymnastics is to be commended. Yes, there is a sea change and one to be celebrated and supported by every gym club in the nation . See you at the Business Conference and National Congress in Hartford! Jeff Metzger

GIRL CLASSIC

PHANTOM GYMNASTICS' BEllA TUCKER FUND hantom Gymnastics in Hampstead, N.H ., has been hard at work helping one of their 8-year-old students Bella Tucker and her family. Bella came down with a near fatal infection of Streptococcus Pneumonia Sepsis with DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation) on Easter Sunday. Doctors gave little hope for this third grader's survival, but after five days in a coma, she miraculously survived . Unfortunately, the infection caused extensive tissue damage, and on April 27, 2010, Bella underwent quadruple amputation surgery and is currently facing an extremely long and hard recovery at Children's Hospital in Boston with extensive rehabilitation to follow as she learns to function without her limbs.
