2011 Visa Championships
W ELCOME
Dear Gymnastics Fans,
Welcome to Saint Paul for the 2011 Visa Championships — the national championships for men, women and rhythmic gymnasts. The field has never been stronger, as athletes vie for the right to represent Team USA in international competition — wearing the red, white, and blue with pride. Saint Paul is a fantastic setting to host the Visa Championships with everything under one roof: the XcelEnergy Center is the site of the men’s and women’s gymnastics competition, the Roy Wilkins Auditorium is the site for the rhythmic events, and the Saint Paul RiverCentre hosts the National Congress. There is no doubt USA Gymnastics is in town, as you can tell from all of the visibility around the city and the many activities that are planned. Throughout the week, Rice Park will be the site of the Visa FanFest and will feature morning fitness, pre- and post-event celebrations, gymnastics demonstrations, and more. It will be THE PLACE for our guests to meet and mingle with the USA Gymnastics family. There is something for everyone. This year, it will be easier than ever to follow the competition online. This year’s Visa Championships will be the “greenest” ever, with schedules and general information including start lists, live scoring and more available at www.usagym.org/visa. It is easily viewable on smart phones and other digital devices. In addition, this year’s event program was produced digitally and is available to those both in and out of the arena to view and enjoy. Follow along with USA Gymnastics on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as well. Special thanks to Visa for its continued support of USA Gymnastics, our programs and athletes. We would also like to thank our local partners from the Local Organizing Committee, the Xcel Energy Center and the Saint Paul Convention & Visitors Bureau for their support of this event, as well as the local clubs and volunteers. We applaud the efforts of all the athletes and coaches and wish them the best of luck. Enjoy the competition. Sincerely
Peter Vidmar Chairman of Board

T
he 2011 Visa Championships women’s competition will highlight the current depth of Team USA as defending Visa Champion and two-time World Championships allaround medalist Rebecca Bross and 2011 AT&T American Cup champion Jordyn Wieber compete for the title. Joining Bross and Wieber will be 2010 World Championships team silver-medalists Mackenzie Caquatto and Alexandra Raisman. Raisman won last month’s 2011 CoverGirl Classic all-around title in Chicago, debuting an exciting two-and-a-half twisting Yurchenko vault en route to the title. Additionally, four members of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games silver medal winning team will be on the competition floor in Saint Paul, including 2010 World team members Alicia Sacramone, who is also the 2010 World vault champion, and Bridget Sloan, the 2009 World all-around champion. Sloan, who is recovering from an injury, will be in Saint Paul but may not compete. Chellsie Memmel, who placed second in the all-around at the CoverGirl Classic, and 2008 Olympic balance beam champion Shawn Johnson, who is returning to competition after a nearly three year layoff, join their Olympic teammates. The 2011 Visa Championships will also see the emergence of first-year senior competitors Bridgette Caquatto, Gabrielle Douglas, McKayla Maroney and Sabrina Vega. The four newcomers, in addition to Amanda Jetter, were part of the U.S. contingent at the 2011 City of Jesolo Trophy competition in Jesolo, Italy. Team USA won 16 medals in Italy including Maroney’s all-around gold medal. Grace McLaughlin, who won the American Classic all-around title, and junior National Team member Mackenzie Wofford will also compete in their first Visa Championships as seniors. Two former collegiate standouts, Casey Jo Magee, who finished second all-around at the 2010 NCAA Championships for Arkansas, and Anna Li, a member of UCLA’s winning 2010 NCAA Championships team, will also compete in Saint Paul. Magee and Li won the balance beam and uneven bars titles, respectively, at the 2011 American Classic. The junior competition will showcase many talented up-and-comers, including two-time defending Visa Championships junior women’s allaround champion Kyla Ross and Katelyn Ohashi, whose beam routine contains a layout back flip with a full twist and a standing Arabian, making it one of the most difficult exercises in the world. Junior National Team members Sarah Finnegan, Ericha Fassbender, Ariana Guerra, Lexie Priessman, Elizabeth Price, Kennedy Baker and Brenna Dowell are also ones to watch in Saint Paul.

MEN’S ARTISTIC PREVIEW By Scott Bregman
D
efending champion Jonathon Horton enters the 2011 Visa Championships as the favorite. Winning the 2011 title would be Horton’s third straight — a feat no man has accomplished since 2004 Olympic champion Paul Hamm (2002-2004). After taking the title at last year’s Visa Championships, Horton went on to have a banner year, winning the all-around bronze medal at the World Championships and the 2011 AT&T American Cup title. But make no mistake, Horton faces tough competition in Saint Paul from his 2010 World Championship team members Danell Leyva, Brandon Wynn, Chris Brooks, Steven Legendre and Chris Cameron. Leyva, who finished fifth on the horizontal bar at the 2010 World Championships, comes to Saint Paul after taking the all-around bronze medal at the 2011 Japan Cup, where he faced World All-Around Champion Kohei Uchimura. Wynn, Legendre and Cameron are a trio of 2010 college graduates with a chance at the 2011 Visa Championship title. Fresh off back-to-back NCAA national titles on the still rings for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Wynn helped lead the USA team to a silver medal at the 2011 Puerto Rico Cup, where he also took the still rings gold and allaround silver medals. Legendre, the eighth place finisher on the floor exercise at each of the last two World Championships, should challenge as well with his daredevil moves, including triple back flips off the still rings and horizontal bar. Second at the recent men’s qualifying event in Colorado Springs, Cameron’s trademark Thomas flairs and stylish work on all six apparatus could land him among the top finishers. Jake Dalton, 2009 World Championships team member, won the 2011 Winter Cup all-around, floor exercise and vault titles in addition to taking the bronze medal at the 2011 AT&T American Cup. Other contenders for the title include fifth place all-around finisher at the 2011 Winter Cup Andrew Elkind, Alexander Naddour, who won the all-around bronze medal at the 2011 Stella Zakharova Cup, and current junior national team member John Orozco, whose impressive scores at the 2011 Japan Cup on the pommel horse, parallel bars and horizontal bar signaled his arrival as a contender in the senior ranks.

PAST CHAMPIONS T
he nation’s top gymnasts will compete for spots on the U.S. Junior and Senior National Teams at the 2011 Visa Championships. This event is one of the most important national competitions of the year. Not only do the top athletes earn the distinction of being the best, but they will also travel both nationally and internationally competing for the U.S. throughout 2011 and 2012. This year’s Visa Championships are especially important because the fans will get the first chance to see the gymnasts who will represent the USA at the upcoming World Championships for men and women’s gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics.

Following are lists of the past U.S. All-Around Champions. For artistic gymnastics there are two lists, one is the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Championships and the other is the USA Gymnastics National Championships. USA Gymnastics became the National Governing Body of the sport of gymnastics in 1963. Sit back and enjoy the gymnastics you’ll see throughout this four-day event in Saint Paul. Watch who will be the next gymnasts to have their names etched in the history book!

SCORING
The International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) scoring system for men’s and women’s gymnastics was instituted in January 2006 and incorporates credit for the routine’s content, difficulty and execution, as well as artistry for the women. In the U.S., this system is used at all elite level events. The FIG’s scoring system is governed by the Code of Points, which is revised for each quadrennium through re-valuing skills and adjusting individual apparatus requirements. Although the basic process is the same for men and women, some differences exist between the two. The men’s and women’s gymnastics scoring system is similar to those used in rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling, and acrobatic gymnastics. Under the current system, a gymnast’s total score includes values for both the routine’s content and his/her execution. Basically, the scoring procedure adds the Difficulty Score, which includes difficulty value for skills, connection value and element group/compositional requirements, to the Execution Score, which encompasses execution and technique — and for women, artistry on the balance beam and floor exercise — to determine a gymnast’s total score. Scores no longer have a maximum value of 10. DIFFICULTY SCORE: difficulty and technical content. The Difficulty Score includes credit for the specified number of skills performed in the routine, along with connection value (credit for connecting high-level skills) and element group/compositional requirements. The men use the term element group requirements, which are the basic categories of skills/elements that must be included in a routine. The women use composition instead of element group to describe this requirement. The element group/compositional requirements vary by apparatus. This score is determined by the D (Difficulty) Panel, which is a two-person panel. THE DIFFICULTY VALUE is determined by totaling values for the most difficult skills — eight for women and 10 for men, including the dismount. Each skill has a set difficulty value, as outlined in the Code of Points, and are divided into seven classifications. The difficulty value of a skill or element is not recognized if it fails to meet its technical requirements. Also, credit is only given once for a skill. For the women, they must perform a minimum of three dance elements and
26
a maximum of five acrobatic elements in their balance beam and floor exercise routines. CONNECTION VALUE is awarded when specific skills or skill types are executed successfully in succession. The women can earn connection values for beam, uneven bars and floor, while the men can earn it for floor and horizontal bar. For men and women, each connection value is either 0.1 or 0.2 points. No connection value is awarded if the gymnast falls. ELEMENT GROUP/COMPOSITIONAL REQUIREMENTS are the basic skills or elements that must be included in each routine and vary by apparatus. This area is similar to the special requirements in the past. If all five requirements are included, a maximum of 2.5 points is awarded. Each judge on the D Panel independently reaches his/her Difficulty Score and then the two compare and reach a consensus. After the score has been posted, a coach may inquire about the Difficulty Score, first verbally and then in writing. An inquiry may be resolved by using video review. The initial inquiry must be made prior to the completion of the next gymnast’s routine. The written inquiry must be submitted before the end of the rotation, and the Superior Jury reviews the inquiry. At FIG events, a fee is assessed for filing an inquiry; it is returned if the inquiry is upheld. EXECUTION SCORE: Execution and technique (plus artistry on beam and floor for women). The Execution Score, determined by a six-person E Panel, now begins at 10 and deductions are made for errors and faults in technique, execution and artistry. Each judge independently determines his/her score. The highest and lowest scores are dropped, and the gymnast’s Execution Score is the average of the remaining four judges’ scores. Deductions for neutral errors are subtracted from the sum of the Difficulty and Execution Scores. THE DEDUCTIONS for various errors range from 0.1 point for a small error to 1 point for a fall. Neutral deductions include those for stepping out of bounds or violating time requirements, as well as attire or podium violations. Inquiries are not allowed on the Execution Score. TOTAL SCORE. The gymnast’s final score is the total of the Difficulty and Execution Scores less any deductions for neutral errors. 2011 Visa Championships

USA Gymnastics partners with Art of the Olympians Vibrant imagery featuring gymnasts and the artwork of four-time Olympic discus gold-medalist Al Oerter are on display throughout Saint Paul. USA Gymnastics has partnered with Art of the Olympians again this year to create a dynamic cultural component in celebration of its largest annual event. “This is truly unique,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “Art and culture are important components of the Olympic movement, and Al Oerter was one of the most enduring athletes of the modern Olympic era. He was a champion in every respect. This effort provides a stunning visual presence for the Visa Championships, and Al’s influence certainly adds inspiration to the athletic performances and enjoyment for all who will visit Saint Paul.” Along with the citywide presence, an exhibition of artwork from the Art of the Olympians gallery will be on display and is expected to feature art by the late Oerter. Art of the Olympians is dedicated to demonstrating the true relationship between art and sport to the general public and recently opened its gallery in Fort Myers, Florida. Some of the signage pieces are for sale during and after the event.
