he chalk dust has settled, and Hartford, Conn., has left an indelible stamp on the Visa Championships by proving to be an exceptional host and setting attendance records.

Things could not have gone better at the 2010 Visa Championships. We created a vision for something special, and we achieved our goals. Record attendance, incredible local support, and outstanding sponsor activation combined to set a grand stage for some exceptional athlete performances. The USA Gymnastics family felt welcome in Hartford, from the banners around town, to hospitality at the Old State House to the hotel staff wearing Visa Championships apparel. The city wrapped its arms around USA Gymnastics, and it proved to be a very warm embrace. Total attendance for the five-day event was 29,298, besting the previous mark set in 2007 in San Jose, Calif. The Visa Championships enjoyed three nights of live television coverage between NBC and Universal Sports, along with a delayed broadcast of the men’s competition on Sunday. Awarding the 2000 U.S. Women’s Olympic Team its team bronze medal was a special moment, along with reuniting the U.S. 1980 Olympic Gymnastics Team that was unable to compete in the Olympics due to the boycott. Congratulations to all of the athletes and coaches for a spectacular week of gymnastics action! Now, it’s on to the World Championships for rhythmic in Moscow, Russia (Sept. 19-26), for men and women in Rotterdam, Netherlands (Oct. 17-24), and for trampoline in Metz, France (Nov. 11-13). The TV schedule is noted on the left. Gymnastics clubs across the country are gearing up to celebrate National Gymnastics Day on Sept. 18. This year, the advertising insert in the September issue of Parents magazine provides gym clubs with additional collateral to distribute to interested parents. The distinctive imagery and catchy text helps drive home the message that kids naturally love gymnastics, which has benefits beyond the gym. In addition to building awareness, National Gymnastics Day is also our community’s opportunity to give back by raising funds for Children’s Miracle Network through the Tyson Fitness Challenge. Helping these children in need is a worthy cause, and our family has done a tremendous job in generating nearly $1.2 million for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals since our partnership began in 2001. If you need ideas for your club’s activities, check our website, www.usagym.org, to see what other clubs are doing. We encourage all of our clubs to take advantage of National Gymnastics Day in helping to promote and to grow the sport we love.

YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

T

he USA was represented by four gymnasts at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, Aug. 14-26, competing in men’s gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and men’s and women’s trampoline. Trampoline

Rhythmic Gymnastics

Savannah Vinsant, 17, of Lafayette, La., placed fifth in women’s trampoline. Vinsant, who trains at Trampoline and Tumbling Express, was in second place heading into the finals, but a slight mistake on her last skill caused her to land on the end mat, putting her in fifth place. “My performance was good until the end,” Vinsant said. “I got a little lost. I tried to rush the finish too early. It’s not over until you’re on the floor, off the trampoline. This kind of hurts, because of course getting a medal was one of my goals here. I can only learn from it; it can help me for the ‘12 (Olympic) Games, because that’s my long-term goal.” Sixteen-year-old Hunter Brewster, who also trains at Trampoline and Tumbling Express, finished 11th in men’s trampoline. Both athletes are coached by Tara Guidry.

Polina Kozitskiy, 14, of Fountainville, Pa., and Philadelphia Rhythmic Academy, qualified to the all-around finals in eighth position and finished seventh in the allaround finals with a score of 92.125. Kozitskiy placed sixth in ball (23.100), seventh in hoop (23.050), eighth in rope (22.900) and eighth in clubs (23.075). Kozitskiy is coached by Iliana Ivanova “I think I did much better than what I did yesterday,” Kozitskiy said. “I had a few little mistakes, but nothing too big.”
