2012 U.S. Men’s Junior National Team Preview The 2012 U.S. Men’s Junior National Volleyball Team (MJNT), which will compete in the 2012 NORCECA Men’s Junior (U-21) Continental Championship, held Aug. 25-Sept. 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo., has a roster boasting a wide range of volleyball talent.
Micah Christenson (Honolulu) and Matt West (Seattle) will set for the MJNT. Both players bring high-level experience as Christenson played in the 2011 FIVB Men’s Junior World Championships and West was named as an alternate to the team.
An 18-player training team spent the three weeks prior to NORCECA (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. The training team roster was selected through USA Volleyball Indoor High Performance tryouts held across the country, while the final six cuts were made during the training block.
“It all starts with the setters.” Hanson said. “Christenson and West bring experience and an understanding of what each hitter needs. I expect us to be offensive and these two will set the tone for that.” Tony Ensbury (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) will work to make sure the setters have crisp passes to work with. As the team’s libero, he brings energy and consistency to the roster.
Peter Hanson, head coach for the 2012 U.S. MJNT, selected his final 12 players at the conclusion of the training camp on Aug. 21 with help from assistant coaches Jay Hosack and Jonah Carson.
“Tony has done a great job day one of training camp.” Hanson said. “He is vocal, and really brings energy and personality to this team.”
“We have an exceptional group of 12 athletes and volleyball players.” Hanson said. “During the training block, this group of guys continually rose to the top.”
Hanson selected Driss Guessous (Pasadena, Calif.), Matt Tarantino (Van Nuys, Calif.) and Nick Olson (New Berlin, Wis.) as the team’s middle blockers.
The team draws from a pool of talented athletes nationwide, with representation from seven states and eight USA Volleyball Regions.
“They are all big.” Hanson said. “I expect us to not only score out of the middle, but block a lot of balls as well. They will bring both offense and defense, and give us options.”
The roster carries two setters, two liberos, two opposite hitters, two middle blockers and four outside hitters.
Tarantino and Olson bring experience to the position, both having trained with the 2011 U.S. Boys’ Youth National Volleyball Team. Tarantino competed in the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship. Guessous, one of three 2012 high school graduates on the program, is a USA Volleyball pipeline.
Hanson and his staff carefully crafted the final roster to provide flexibility and options. “When we picked our final roster, we were looking for the ability to combine guys in different ways.” Hanson said. “They all bring something a little different. They make us flexible.”

2012 U.S. Men’s Junior National Team Preview “The neat thing about our opposites is that they give us flexibility and we can use them to manage games.” Hanson said. “Shaw is our shutdown blocker and Patch really found his serving rhythm. They both bring a strong side-out game. We have options utilizing those two.”
international experience to the squad, having competed on the 2011 U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team at the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship. Henchy is a fairly new face to the USA Volleyball pipeline but will be a key contributor on the team. Going into the NORCECA event, Hanson and his coaching staff expect nothing short of a podium appearance.
Despite their youth, Patch and Shaw bring international experience to the position having competed at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship.
USA has medaled in all seven of the biennial events, including the gold at the most recent edition in 2010. The Americans gained the silver in 2004 and 2006, while earning the bronze in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2008. Cuba has won the tournament a record four times, but is not competing in this edition. Canada has won the event twice (1998 and 2002) and has the second most medals with five.
Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn.), Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill.), DJ White (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Michael Henchy (Ventura, Calif.) provide unique elements to the roster and will be key parts of the lineup. “White brings excellent passing and defense.” Hanson said. “He is very smart and efficient on the outside. Rhein and Petty can both get hot. They have the ability to get after it both at the net and on the end line (serving). Henchy brings size to the position and we can use him to control the net game.”
The top three teams at the NORCECA Championship will qualify for the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Junior World Championship. “They are battling for a medal (at NORCECA).” Hanson said. “As well as a chance to go to the World Championship. We are excited about our final 12.”

Staff Profile—Pete Hanson
MJNT Position: Head Coach College Affiliation : Ohio State
Pete Hanson has served as the head volleyball coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes for 27 years. He has garnered an overall record of 541-228.
as a second-place finish in the MIVA. Hanson was named MIVA Coach of the Year in 1992. That season, his team finished with a 28-10 record and earned a share of the MIVA Championship title.
Hanson played volleyball for Kellogg Community College in Michigan, where he won the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship in both 1976 and 1977. He was selected as an All– American during the 1997 season.
In 1998, Hanson’s team finished with an impressive 25-2 record that earned him MIVA Coach of the Year as well as Volleyball Magazine’s Coach of the Year. That season his team carried three All-Americans.
Hanson finished his college career at Ball State University, where he won the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship in 1979 and finished fourth in the NCAA Championships. Hanson was named an All-MIVA selection in 1978 and 1979.
Hanson was once again named MIVA Coach of the Year in 2000, and also earned AVCA National Coach of the year accolades that season after finishing second in the NCAA Championship.
Hanson graduated from Ball State with a degree in natural resources and geology. He stayed with the program for an extra year, transitioning from player to assistant coach.
Hanson led his team to their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in 2002. His team continued to climb in success and recognition, and in 2007 earned a top-nine finish in the national rankings. In 2009, Hanson’s squad improved their national ranking to seventh.
In 1980, Hanson stepped into the assistant coach role at the University of Wyoming. The squad earned a top-20 ranking in 1981. Hanson took over as head coach for the Cowboys in 1982 and earned 14-12 record.
Hanson earned his tenth MIVA Coach of the Year award following to 2010 season after leading his team to a 22-8 record and 10th–place national ranking.
In 1985, Hanson took a head coaching job with the Ohio State Buckeyes where he has remained since. In his first year leading the squad, Hanson posted a 16-13 record and finished second in the MIVA. The following season he led the team to a first-place finish in the MIVA and a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Championships.
Ohio State won its first NCAA National Championship in 2011. For the second time in his career, Hanson earned AVCA National Coach of the Year as well as Volleyball Magazine’s Coach of the Year. Aside from his impressive career with the Buckeyes, Hanson has been actively involved in coaching elite-level programs, such as the U.S. Men’s Olympic Volleyball Team in 1996.
Hanson was named MIVA Coach of the Year in the league in 1988 after leading his team to a 23-12 finish in league play as well 23

MJNT Position: Assistant Coach College Affiliation: Penn State
Jay Hosack started his volleyball career at UC Santa Cruz, where he played from 1995-97. After the conclusion of his career, Hosack transitioned to coaching and served as both head men’s and women’s volleyball coach at UC Santa Cruz from 2000-04.
In 2007, Hosack earned conference Co-Coach of the Year honors and led the women’s program to a conference championship title. Hosack took an assistant coaching position at Penn State in 2010.
Under his guidance, the UC Santa Cruz men’s volleyball team earned a national semifinal appearance in 2004. Hosack also produced the programs first allAmerican athlete. Hosack earned UC Santa Cruz Coach of the Year accolades in 2002 an 2004.
In addition to his collegiate coaching career, Hosack has significant experience coaching with USA Volleyball programs.
After his time at UC Santa Cruz, Hosack took over as assistant coach at Idaho State University and spent a season with the program.
From 2006-2008, he assisted with the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team that went on to win the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal and the 2008 FIVB World League title.
Next, Hosack served as associate head coach for both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams at Irvine Valley College. Hosack guided the men’s teams to conference titles in 2005 and 2007 as well as back-to-back state championships in 2007 and 2008.
Hosack assisted the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team in 2010 and served as an assistant coach at the 2011 Pan Am Games where the team took third.

Staff Profile— Jonah Carson
MJNT Position: Assistant Coach College Affiliation: University of the Pacific
Jonah Carson coached at Aptos High School from 2002-05 and was named SCCAL Coach of the Year. Carson led his team to sectional championship appearances each season from 2003-05.
Carson was named an AVCA Division III Coach of the Year Finalist in 2006-08 as well as in 2010. Carson joined the Pacific Tigers in 2011 and in his first year helped lead the squad to a 15-place finish in the nation. The Tigers were ranked third in the nation in blocks per game with 2.92 on 489 block assists and 62 solo blocks.
Carson was also active with Bay to Bay Volleyball Club where he coached as well as handled administrative duties. Carson transitioned from the high school to college coaching when he accepted an assistant coach position with the UC Santa Cruz men’s volleyball team. During his six-year tenure, he helped the Banana Slugs to a streak of 67 consecutive weeks in the AVCA top-five poll. Carson led his team to the Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship four times.
Carson is no stranger to USA Volleyball programs. He has coached at a variety of USA High Performance camps. From 2007-10, Carson served as assistant coach for the USA Boys’ Select A1 Team at the USAV High Performance Championships. In 2010, Carson served as head coach for the USAV Boys’ Select A3 Camp.
Carson has worked with 10 AVCA Division III AllAmericans, including 2008 Player of the Year Byran Shires and 2012 Newcomer of the Year Salvatore La Cavera.
Carson also served as a technical coordinator for the USA Volleyball Boys’ Youth National Team in 2011.

Twelve players on the roster competed with the 2011 U.S. Youth National Teams that finished third at the Boys’ Youth (Under-19) Pan American Cup and 11th at the FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship: Nik Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), Cody Caldwell (Newport Beach, Calif.), Austin Kingi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), Ben Patch (Provo, Utah), Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill.), Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn.), Aaron Russell (Ellicott City, Md.), Andrew Sato (Calabasas, Calif.), James Shaw (Woodside, Calif.), Matt Tarantino (Van Nuys, Calif.), Matt West (Seattle, Wash.) and DJ White (Hermosa Beach, Calif.).

Making their first USA Volleyball national team roster are Tony Ensbury (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Driss Guessous (Pasadena, Calif.), Michael Henchy (Ventura, Calif.) and Mitch Stahl (Chambersburg, Pa.).
“It is a great honor to be a part of the USA Junior National Team coaching staff,” Hanson said. “I am most excited about the prospect of USA Volleyball being able to host the NORCECA tournament on our home soil as our team attempts to qualify for the 2013 World Championship.”
“This group of 19 athletes who will be vying for 12 roster spots is both athletic and very experienced, with many of them having participated in last summer’s Youth World Championship,” Hanson said. “We are hoping that those experiences will be a springboard for a great summer of training and competition at the NORCECA tournament.”
Ten different USA Volleyball regions are represented on the roster. Thirteen players on the training team have previous international experience with USA Volleyball.

The Americans had already faced and defeated Egypt in their first match of the tournament, winning in five sets after Egypt came back from a 0-2 set deficit.
Despite the loss, the Americans took their highest finish ever in the tournament by reaching the semifinal round and entering the bronze-medal match. In five previous entries, the team produced three seventhplace finishes and two eighth-place finishes.
Egypt accumulated a comfortable lead in the first set in the rematch, but the U.S. made a comeback to tie the score at 21-all and carried it out to a 29-27 victory. Egypt won the first two points of the second set, but the U.S. kept the score close for the entire set until Egypt pulled out a close 25-23 second set victory. Team USA’s offense could not be denied in the third and fourth sets. The U.S. team put the pressure on Egypt and pulled out consecutive 25-20 set victories.
“Fourth place is the worst position you can have when you have lost the two most important matches, but I am sure many other teams would like to be in our place,” U.S. Men’s Junior National Team Head Coach John Hawks said. “I am happy for my players.”
Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill.) scored nine kills on 25 attacks, three aces and two blocks for 14 points to lead the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team against Egypt. Cody Caldwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) tallied 13 points with 11 kills on 31 attacks, a block and an ace. Austin Kingi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) contributed 12 points on 10 kills via 27 swings and two blocks.
Crabb added that regardless of the outcome, the experience in itself was a good one. “We didn’t obtain our goal of earning a medal, but we played a good tournament,” Crabb said. “It was a great experience.”
Aaron Russell (Ellicott City, Md.) and James Shaw (Woodside, Calif.) both contributed nine points apiece. Russell racked up his points with seven kills on 13 attacks and two aces, while Shaw scored his points on six kills via eight errorless attacks and three blocks.
U.S. BOYS’ YOUTH NATIONAL TEAM TAKES 11th OVER EGYPT COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 28, 2011) The U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team (BYNT) defeated Egypt 29-27, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 on Sunday afternoon and finished in 11th place at the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship Argentina 2011 being played in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) added five points on three kills through four swings and two blocks. Ben Patch (Provo, Utah) chipped in three points, all on kills. Josh Kirchner (Sussex, Wis.) and Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn.) scored four points collectively on two kills apiece. Matt West (Seattle) scored a block for the match winning point.
"This tournament has been a great experience for us,” U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team Head Coach Ken Shibuya said. “Argentina has been a great host and my players have gained a lot of confidence through this competition.”
The U.S. converted 41.4 percent of its attacks into points with a .273 hitting efficiency with 18 attack errors. Egypt held a kill percent of 37.7 percent and 27

Roof - to block a spike, usually straight down and for a point. Screening - an attempt by a player to conceal the start of a teammate’s serve by obstructing an opponent’s line of sight. Screening is illegal. Seams - the space between the blockers and between back-court defenders.
