Non Surgical Uterine Fibroids Treatment at USA Vascular Centers
Uterine Fibroid Embolization
The physicians at USA Vascular Centers are trained and experienced in the treatment of fibroids, specifically through a procedure called Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). This procedure is conducted in our clinics, on an outpatient basis. A vascular surgeon is best trained to perform these procedures because shrinking or destroying the fibroid depends upon blocking the artery that supplies blood to it.
UFE is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment for fibroids and whenever possible, a good alternative to having a hysterectomy. It is important to note that UFE should be considered only if you are not planning on getting pregnant. The risks to pregnancy from the treatment are unknown.
Heavy bleeding during menstruation
Pelvic pressure and/or pain that disrupts your daily activities
Urinary or bowel problems, like constipation.
UFE procedure is conducted on an outpatient basis in our clinics, by a highly trained, experienced physician. When you come to us for this procedure, you will experience the following:
First we will make sure that you are warm and comfortable. We will give you a light sedative to make sure that you are relaxed. Then our vascular surgeon will use our advanced ultrasound to find the specific location of the fibroid or fibroids. After numbing the local area, a tiny catheter will be inserted through a very small incision in your upper thigh.
Using the ultrasound as a guide, the surgeon will thread the catheter into the uterine artery that is supplying blood to the fibroids Small particles will flow through the catheter, blocking the arteries and the blood flow, causing the fibroids to shrink. Then the catheter is removed and a small bandage is placed over the incision which is so small that stitches are not required. The procedure takes approximately 90 minutes.
