Causes and Symptoms of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome Pelvic Congestion Syndrome is believed to affect a third women at some point in their lives. Many within the medical community believe swollen varicose veins around your uterus and ovaries are the primary cause of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome. Defined as non-cyclic pain, Pelvic Congestion Syndromecan last more than six months, making it a major and often debilitating problem. Symptoms range from severe chronic pain to intermittent, dull aching, cramps, and uncomfortable pressure in the pelvis. Additional causes include: ¡ Endometriosis. A condition where the lining of your womb grows outside the uterus and reacts to your uterine cycle. As the material is outside the womb, it
cannot leave the body during your period. This causes painful cysts to develop when it thickens and breaks down, causing symptoms of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome. ¡ Fibroids. Benign uterine growths that create a sense of heaviness, and sometimes sharp pain, in the pelvis. Fibroids become deprived of blood over time and can become painful as they degenerate. Like varicose veins, fibroids can prompt symptoms of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome. ¡ Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, painful bladder syndrome, and psychosomatic causes. Treatment Options At the USA Vascular Centers , we believe a multi-disciplinary approach is required to treat pelvic congestion syndrome. First, a physical examination and Pap test (to rule our chances of cervical cancer) are carried out. Routine bloodwork and crosssectional imaging will also help rule out pelvic tumors. We find that chronic symptoms persist and are worsened when sitting down or standing. The cause of pelvic pain is usually linked to varicose veins, along with ovarian vein and pelvic varices. Those who suffer chronic vascular diseases know how affecting they can be, but with our help, you can take control of your health. Your treatment plan, however, depends on your diagnosis, which is why our trained vascular physicians complete a comprehensive, detailed assessment. The sooner your diagnosis is determined, the sooner we can discuss treatment options with you. Our most common treatment plan is to use nonsurgical, minimally invasive, transcatheter procedures to embolize defective blood vessels. This procedure involves local anesthesia and intravenous sedation, and has been shown to deliver extremely effective results. Most practices operate at a typical 80% rate of success, but we always strive for more
