Ligation and Stripping

Ligation and stripping is a highly effective treatment for varicose veins as it eliminates painful symptoms in a matter of weeks. Minimally invasive and just as simple, ligation and stripping takes place under local or general anesthetic. The procedure has your doctor tie off the vein (ligation) and remove it (stripping) through surgery. Your doctor makes two incisions in your leg, one at the top of the vein, the second above the knee. Then, your doctor ties the top of the vein off, which blocks blood flow to that vein. Next, they feed a thin wire through the vein to strip it. Following the treatment, your deep leg veins will replace the old vein. Transilluminated Powered Phlebectomy Transilluminated powered phlebectomy is a new treatment for varicose veins, bearing some similarities to ligation and stripping. TPP, however, is unique. Just as in ligation and stripping, your doctor makes two small incisions at either end of the affected vein. Next, the feed an endoscopic transilluminator under your skin to identify which veins they need to remove. Following this, a specialized suction device should be placed on each incision, to remove them completely, once the vein specialist has cut the veins. This technique has proven incredibly promising, and afterward, you should start to see a difference relatively soon. In some cases, only a matter of weeks. TPP is great for reducing pain and eliminating unsightly varicose veins. Endovenous Laser Treatment and Radiofrequency Ablation Radiofrequency ablation heats the wall of the varicose veins it targets. As a minimally invasive procedure, it requires a small incision just above or below the knee to access the affected vein. Following this, your doctor will push a catheter through towards the vein. Ultrasound scanning allows them to plot a course for the catheter on a monitor. They can then target the vein with a radiofrequency energy probe. The vein wall will collapse once it becomes heated enough, closing off at either end and, redirecting blood to healthier veins. We find that radiofrequency ablation is as popular and effective as EVLT. EVLT also uses a catheter to locate and target varicose veins. However, instead of a radiofrequency probe, EVLT calls for a small laser. This does the same job of heating the vein wall with short bursts of laser energy until it collapses. Cauterizing the vein in this way allows it to be reabsorbed by the body following treatment. Your body naturally redirects blood flow to healthier veins, which

means you’ll be in and out in no time at all. Both treatments for varicose veins can use either local or general anesthetic, though this depends on what your doctor recommends.
