Why Varicose Veins Need Treatment?

What Are Varicose Veins? Varicose veins are diseased veins caused by dysfunctional valves in the veins that affect the circulation of blood. Some of the most common symptoms of venous insufficiency are painful varicose veins, leg pain and cramps, leg swelling or heaviness, itchiness or skin discoloration on the legs. If left untreated these veins can lead to more serious complications.

Reasons Why Varicose Veins Need To Be Treated: 1. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in the veins that are deep in the body, often in the legs. Blood clots can be caused by anything that prevents the blood from circulating normally. The most serious threat associated with DVT is Pulmonary Embolism (PE). A PE occurs when a piece of a clot breaks off and travels in the bloodstream to the lungs. If the clot is big enough, it can prevent blood from reaching the lungs, and this condition can be fatal if the blood supply is cut off.

2. Venous ulcers: Chronic symptoms of venous insufficiency can lead to the development of venous ulcers caused by the blood backing up in the veins, building up pressure. If not treated, increased pressure and excess fluid in the affected area can cause an open sore to form. At USA Vein Clinics we offer wound care for venous ulcers as well. 3. Superficial Thrombophlebitis: Superficial Thrombophlebitis is an inflammatory disorder in which a clot develops in a vein located near the surface of the skin. When affecting the saphenous vein, thrombophlebitis will sometimes progress in to the deep venous system. Damage to deep venous valves leads to chronic deep venous insufficiency, as well as to recurrent pulmonary embolism (PE) and an increased risk of death.

4. Spontaneous bleeding: Located near the surface of the skin, varicose veins may rupture and bleed spontaneously due to a very minor injury to the skin. If left untreated patients may experience a significant loss of blood. 5. Skin damage: Malfunctioning valves in leg veins can cause blood to pool in the lower legs causing inflammation. When this damage and inflammation gets worse, the inflammation can work its way through the tissue under the skin. The skin may show damage as skin discoloration, the formation of a shiny, tight and hard patch, a brown area of eczema which is both itchy and red.
