The USC women’s tennis program is on probation until June 9, 2014 for NCAA sanctions involving lack of institutional control and extra benefits. The penalties include: public reprimand and censure; four years of probation through June 9, 2014; vacation of the ineligible women’s tennis player’s wins and individual records in matches she played in between November 2006 and May 2009 and the reconfiguration of the records of the University and the Head Coach to reflect those actions. RICHARD GALLIEN Now entering his 18th season at Troy, USC women’s tennis head coach Richard Gallien has strung together 17 straight NCAA appearances for his Women of Troy, 16 top-20 team rankings, seven trips to the NCAA Quarterfinals and two to the NCAA Semifinals. Under Gallien’s watch, USC has finished in the top-20 for the past 15 years, and has nine top-10 finishes in that span. Since 2005, three Trojans have been named conference Player of the Year, and two USC doubles teams have been honored as Doubles Team of the Year. A three-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year and two-time ITA West Region Coach of the Year, Gallien has compiled a 309-129 (.706) overall record at USC while holding a career record of 371-153 (.708) in his 20 seasons as a head coach, including three years with the Pepperdine men’s program [Due to NCAA penalty, 7 wins left undecided and 1 win became a loss; revised USC record: 301-130 (.698) and revised career total: 363-154 (.702)]. Last year, Gallien and the Women of Troy won a share of the Pac-12 Championship, finishing 8-1 in conference play before making a run to the NCAA Semifinals, thanks to a quarterfinal win over Stanford. The 24-4 finish for USC had the Trojans ranked No. 4 in the nation for USC’s highest final ranking since 2006. In 2011, USC made a run to the NCAA Second Round, finishing the year with a 15-9 overall record to improve on a 14-10 mark in 2010. In 2009, Gallien’s Women of Troy rolled undefeated through Pac-10 play, snapping a 23-year losing streak to the Cardinal along the way to get USC to the top of the conference to claim honors as 2009 Pac-10 Champions and help secure Gallien’s third selection as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year as well as an eventual pick as the ITA West Region Coach of the Year. USC finished 21-3 overall on the year after a run to the NCAA Second Round [Due to NCAA penalty, 4 wins left undecided and 1 win became a loss; revised record 16-4]. Gallien also saw Amanda Fink become the second Trojan to win the Pac-10 Singles Championship with her run to the title in 2009.

In 2008, USC continued its NCAA streak with another trip to the NCAA Round of 16, where USC met rival UCLA for the third time that year. The Trojans finished out the season 19-8 overall and went 5-3 in Pac-10 competition. [Due to NCAA penalty, 3 nonconference wins left undecided; revised record: 16-8 overall]. The 2007 season saw USC work its way into a rematch with its 2006 NCAA Semifinal opponent, Miami, much earlier in the NCAA stretch. A tight 4-3 loss to Miami in the NCAA Round of 16 gave USC a 19-5 overall record, as the Trojans finished ranked No. 10 in the nation. In Pac-10 play, USC went 6-2. Under Gallien’s guidance, Lindsey Nelson won USC’s first Pac-10 Singles Championship and went on to make her second straight trip to the NCAA singles final -- the first time in program history a USC player has made back-to-back appearances in the final. In 2006, Gallien’s USC squad rolled to another 7-1 mark in Pac-10 play and worked its way into the NCAA Semifinals, where the Trojans fell to Miami in a match that was interrupted by rain and resumed the next day. USC finished with a 21-4 overall record and wound up ranked No. 3 at season’s close with Gallien named Pac-10 Coach of the Year. The 2005 season saw the Women of Troy stick in the nation’s top 10 with a 19-4 overall mark capped by a visit to the NCAA Quarterfinals and a No. 7 final ranking. USC finished the 2002 season with a program-best 7-1 Pac-10 record, advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 and earning a No. 11 ranking at season’s end. In 2001, the Women of Troy made a third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals following big postseason wins over South Alabama and Northwestern. USC earned a No. 8 final national ranking with a 20-8 overall record and a second-place finish in the Pac-10. To begin the new millennium, Gallien led the 2000 Women of Troy to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second time under his leadership. USC completed the season with an 18-9 overall record and No. 11 final team ranking. The 1999 season marked Gallien’s first appearance at the NCAA Quarterfinals, as his team went 21-9 overall. The Women of Troy finished 7-1 in the Pac-10 that year and Gallien was honored as the Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Their second-place finish was USC’s best since 1990, and the team’s 21 wins, at that time, were the program’s most in 12 seasons. Gallien’s career at Troy began in the 1995-96 season as he led the Women of Troy to a 16-9 overall record and 4-6 mark in the Pac-10 Southern Division. At that time, USC’s 16 wins were its most since the 1990 season. The following year, the 1997 Trojans were overwhelmed by injuries and finished the season with a 10-16 overall record and 0-10 finish in the Pac-10. The 1998 Trojans, despite still being plagued by injuries throughout the year, garnered a winning record at 13-11 and went 3-5 in the Pac-10 for sixth place. Prior to coming to USC, Gallien spent 11 years at Pepperdine as a player, assistant coach and co-head coach. He spent the 1995 season as an assistant to Pepperdine men’s coach Allen Fox. He began his coaching career as Fox’s assistant for three seasons (1985-87), where the Waves finished second in the nation in 1986. Gallien then became Pepperdine’s co-head coach with Fox for three seasons (1988-90) and helped guide the Waves to a 62-24 mark. His 1988 and 1990 squads played in the NCAA Tournament and Wave Robby Weiss won the 1988 NCAA singles crown. Gallien left Pepperdine in 1990 to become the head professional at the prestigious Los Angeles Tennis Club and later entered private business for two years (1993-94) before returning to Pepperdine as an assistant for the 1995 campaign. During his four-year (1980-83) playing career at Pepperdine, Gallien twice earned All-American honors (1982-83) and his teams went 81-21 and advanced to the NCAAs each year. The 1982 Wave squad was the NCAA runner-up. He won 60 dual-match singles matches during his career and qualified three times in both singles and doubles for the NCAA Championships. He spent 1984 playing professional tennis and then returned to Pepperdine as an assistant coach. As a prep at Verdugo Hills High in Tujunga (Calif.), Gallien was named the Los Angeles City Player of the Year as a 1979 senior. Gallien, 49, earned his bachelor’s degree in organizational communications from Pepperdine in 1985. He also has served as a part-time color analyst for FOX Sports West. He and his wife, Lisa, currently reside in the South Bay with their daughters, Leah and Ava.

West Nott enters his sixth season as assistant coach at USC, honored as the 2009 ITA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year in his second season with the Women of Troy. He came to Troy after serving as a volunteer assistant with the Washington men’s program, following a successful collegiate playing career at Georgia Tech. “Each girl on the team is a firecracker filled with a lot of love and enthusiasm for the game,” Nott said. “From what I have seen so far, our new freshmen are ready for the tough task ahead and believe in themselves. We have great leadership from team captain Alison Ramos and head coach Richard Gallien, who are two of the most competitive people I know. I believe we have the depth and attitude to make an impact this year.” Nott, 29, helped the Trojans get off to a fast start for the 2010-11 season, where four Trojans qualified to compete at the 2010 ITA National Indoor Championships in New York in the fall — a feat only achieved by USC, Stanford and Florida. Regional singles champion Danielle Lao and regional doubles champs Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos all joined the action in New York, with Maria Sanchez powering through the entire singles bracket to claim her first ITA National Indoor Singles Championship and taking over the No. 1 singles ranking by defeating defending champion Jana Juricova of Cal. Prior to his arrival in Los Angeles, Nott was a volunteer assistant coach for the Washington men under head coach Matt Anger, a former Trojan. During his coaching career, Nott continues to compete in Davis Cup competition as a member of the Pacific Oceania team, having beaten the No. 1 and No. 2 players from Iran during the summer’s 2011 Davis Cup and also competing in matches vs. China, New Zealand, South Korea, Malaysia and Pakistan as a member of the Pacific Oceania team. He also claimed victory in the deciding singles match against Pakistan at the 2006 Davis Cup. In college, Nott played one year at Florida before transferring to Georgia Tech. In three seasons, Nott rose to No. 5 on the all-time career singles wins list and reached No. 2 all-time in single-season doubles wins. In his junior career, Nott was consistently ranked in the nation’s top-10 for his age group. He was consistently ranked No. 1 in the Midwest Section and won the US National Indoor Junior Championships in 1998.Teaming with his mother, Elizabeth, Nott won the 2006 National Mother-Son Doubles Championships in 2006 and reached the final in 2010. Nott also spent six months as the full-time coach for Canadian Rebecca Marino, who is now ranked in the top 100 WTA. Although born in the Marshall Islands, Nott spent his childhood hitting against the wall on an island in Micronesia called Pohnpei until the age of 11. His family includes his parents, Sam and Elizabeth, his sister, Shimiko, who graduated from Princeton, and brother, Noah, who currently attends Washington.

Alison Ramos enters her first season as volunteer assistant coach for the USC women after playing four years with the Women of Troy. An NCAA All-Tournament Team honoree for doubles as a senior in USC’s run to the NCAA Semifinals, Ramos also was a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team selection and earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention as a sophomore. She graduated in December 2012 with a degree in human performance.

he David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on the USC campus is one of the finest collegiate tennis facilities in the country. During winter of 2006, a sixth court was added to the main stadium, allowing for dual-match competition to be played out entirely in front of fans within the 1,000-seat venue. A new and much-anticipated addition was made in May 2005 with the installation of a $300,000 LED Daktronic interactive scoreboard. Fans can now follow each match point-for-point from their stadium seat and online at www.usctrojans.com. The stadium also underwent renovations during the summer of 2002. Seven hundred chair-back seats were added to replace the bleachers on the baselines and the courts were all repainted and lined. Two of the courts are named after famous USC alumni and Wimbledon singles champions, Alex Olmedo and Stan Smith. The center court is named for USC’s 13 Grand Slam doubles champions — Byron Black, Bob Falkenburg, Luke Jensen, Murphy Jensen, Rick Leach, Bob Lutz, Gene Mako, Olmedo, Rafael Osuna, Dennis Ralston, Raul Ramirez, Ted Schroeder and Smith. Underneath the stadium is the beautiful Leonard Andrews Varsity Lounge and Team Room, along with two locker rooms. The locker rooms also have been renovated through a generous gift made by John and Michelle Katnik of Diversified Development. Each locker room features the program’s recent conference championship trophies, Hall of Fame walls with past NCAA singles and doubles champions, as well as the men’s and women’s national championship trophies. At the entrance to the stadium is a list of all 18 of the USC men’s national champion years and seven women’s tennis national championships, including a newly-added 2009 and 2010 for the men’s back-to-back titles. Plaques honoring Trojan legends Dick Leach and George Toley also adorn the entrance of Marks Stadium. The stadium was dedicated in 1973 when former Trojan stars Alex Olmedo, Stan Smith, Dennis Ralston and Bob Lutz held a tennis exhibition. The 1974 men’s NCAA Tournament was held at Marks Stadium (USC finished second).

Former USC player Barbara Hallquist DeGroot and coach Dave Borelli were among the class of six former student-athletes and coaches to be inducted into the ITA Women’s Collegiate Hall of Fame in a ceremony held on the William and Mary campus on Saturday, Nov. 13. Borelli -- former USC coach and current coach at TCU -- won seven national collegiate championships as coach at USC. Barbara Hallquist DeGroot was a four-time All-American who captured two national collegiate singles titles as a Trojan. Joining Hallquist DeGroot and Borelli at the event were Wimbledon doubles champion JoAnne Russell, an All-American at Trinity University in Texas; Courtney Allen, NCAA Division III Rookie of the Year and Senior Player of the Year at Principia College; Ed Hegmann, former women’s tennis coach and current athletic director at the University of Mary Washington, a two-time NCAA Division III Coach of the Year; and Carrie Meyer Richardson, winner of the 1974 national collegiate singles title while a freshman at Marymount College in Florida. David Borelli served as women’s tennis coach at USC from 1974 to 1988, winning seven national team championships and earning NCAA National Collegiate Coach of the Year honors in 1981. As an undergraduate, Borelli played on the USC men’s tennis team, earning the USC Outstanding Senior Scholar Athlete Award in 1974. He began his coaching career while attending USC Law School, from which he earned a J.D. in 1977. While at USC, Borelli guided individual players to five national collegiate singles titles and one doubles titles; 25 of his players earned a total of 56 All-America honors. He went on to work as a USTA professional tour coach, mentoring such Top 100 players as Mardy Fish in their rookie careers. In 2002, Borelli became head coach of women’s tennis at Texas Christian University, leading his teams from No. 56 to No. 15 in the national rankings. Coach of the TCU men’s team from 2006-2010, Borelli returned as head coach of the TCU women’s team in July 2010. The first woman to receive a full athletic scholarship at USC, Barbara Hallquist DeGroot captured the national collegiate singles title in both 1976 and 1977 and played on four national championship teams under coach David Borelli. Ranked No. 1 in Southern California as a junior player, Hallquist won two national USTA junior titles, and nine national USTA titles overall. She was a co-recipient of the USTA Girls’ Sportsmanship Trophy in 1975. At USC, Hallquist was a four-time All-American, named Outstanding Female Senior Student-Athlete in 1979 and winning the USC Post Graduate Scholarship Award. Turning pro after college and attaining a career high world ranking of No. 30, she competed in all four Grand Slam events and reached the quarterfinals in singles at the 1980 U.S. Open. From 1985-88, Hallquist served as USC assistant coach, helping guide the team to the 1985 NCAA team championship. She now serves as women’s tennis coach at Cate School in Carpinteria, California. The ITA Women’s Collegiate Hall of Fame was established in 1995 and honors outstanding collegiate players and coaches, as well as players who attended college and later had a significant impact on women’s tennis. The Hall of Fame is located at the College of William and Mary’s McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, named for the late Mark McCormack, founder of sports marketing giant International Management Group, and his wife, former tennis pro Betsy Nagelsen.

Did You Know? 路 The USC School of Cinematic Arts (above) was proud to both celebrate its 80th anniversary during the 2009-10 academic year, and open the doors on the first two buildings in its new Cinematic Arts complex, which pays homage to the cinematic history of Southern California and USC. The new Cinematic Arts complex was built, thanks to a $175 million donation by USC alumnus George Lucas. The now-completed complex includes an animation building, soundstages and a production center. 路 In February 2010, the Princeton Review ranked USC's Interactive Media division as the No. 1 video-game design program in North America. Game design formally got its start at USC in 2002, when the USC School of Cinematic Arts launched its MFA in interactive media, although a core game-design workshop had been in place since 1999. In 2004, the school unveiled the Game Innovation Lab, a state-of-the-art research space and think tank for game design and creation. A B.A. in interactive entertainment was first offered in 2005. Today, USC offers four degrees in video-game development at the undergraduate and graduate levels. For the game-play design-focused, the USC School of Cinematic Arts offers the Master of Fine Arts in interactive media and the Bachelor of Arts in interactive entertainment. For the more engineering-oriented, the USC Viterbi School offers the Bachelor of Science in computer science (games) and the Master of Science in computer science (game development).
The University of Southern California is a private research institution of international distinction. The Vision of USC Did You Know? · USC was named No. 23 in the nation for the “best national universities” category by U.S. News & World Report in 2010. At 23rd, USC was tied with Carnegie Mellon University. U.S. News listed USC among only five institutions in the American West in the top 25; it also included Stanford (No. 5), the California Institute of Technology (No. 7), the University of California, Berkeley (No. 22) and UCLA (No. 25). From 1991 to date, USC has risen 28 places in the U.S. News rankings. Moreover, the university also was rated as having the third most economically diverse student body among top schools. Two USC schools were singled out in the rankings for quality: The USC Marshall School of Business was ranked No. 10 nationally and was listed as No. 4 in entrepreneurship and No. 5 in real estate. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering was rated 26th overall. · USC’s 2009 entering class is the most academically talented in the university’s 129-year history. Despite a difficult economic environment, demand remained high, with 35,753 applications for 2,869 places in the class. Students’ average standardized test scores are in the 94th percentile as compared to all students in the United States, and their average grade point average is 3.7. USC offers admission without regard to ability to pay, and the university meets 100 percent of the demonstrated need of on-time financial aid applicants. USC has the largest university-funded financial aid budget of any university in the country, providing more than $180 million each year of university funds to undergraduates. USC’s diverse student body is a strength and source of pride. From its earliest days, USC aspired to diversity by instituting policies that assured no student would be denied admission because of race, color, religion, or gender. The university has attracted more international students over the years than any other American university. Currently, 11 percent of USC’s students represent over 110 countries. Equally important is the academic excellence that today’s USC students bring. USC accepted 80 percent of applicants from the top 10 percent of their high schools. The 2009 entering class’ SAT score average between 1930-2150 and GPA average is 3.7. But USC students are more than academic high-achievers. There have been more Trojans in the Olympics than any American university, and over 60 percent of the university’s students volunteer in community-service programs in neighborhoods around campus and throughout LA. Outstanding, well-rounded students are a hallmark of USC.
USC’s faculty members aren’t just teachers of others’ works, but active contributors to what is taught, thought, and practiced throughout the world. Alumni USC’s first alumni association was founded in 1885, just a year after the university graduated its first class. Those initial eight men and women paved the way for today’s more than 229,000-member USC Alumni Association. Trojan alumni span all 50 states and virtually every region of the world. As leaders in their communities and professions, they bring recognition to their alma mater. Distinguished alumni include former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher, astronaut Neil Armstrong, architect Frank Gehry, opera singer Marilyn Horne, symphony conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, film director George Lucas, and baseball pitcher Mark Prior. The talents and commitment of its alumni are among USC’s greatest strengths.
Traveler Traveler, the noble white horse that appears at all USC home football games with a regal Trojan warrior astride, is one of the most famous college mascots. Traveler first made an appearance at USC football games in 1961. Bob Jani, then USC’s director of special events, and Eddie Tannenbaum, then a junior at USC, had spotted Richard Saukko riding his white horse, Traveler I, in the 1961 Rose Parade. They persuaded Saukko to ride his white horse during USC games, serving as a mascot. Ever since, whenever USC scores, the band plays “Conquest” and Traveler gallops around the Coliseum. The current Trojan mascot is Traveler VII. Even though the breed of horse may have changed over the years — Travelers I through VI ranged from an Arabian/Tennessee Walker to a pure-bred Tennessee Walker to a pure-bred Arabian to an Andalusian — Traveler’s color has always remained pure white. In the fall of 2004, USC alumnus Bill Tilley ('61) and his wife, Nadine, donated $2 million to provide a permanent endowment to support Traveler. Besides the horses, USC once even had a canine mascot. A mutt named George Tirebiter I (famous for chasing cars through the USC campus) first appeared at football games in 1940. He survived a publicized dognapping by UCLA in 1947, but succumbed under the tires of an automobile in 1950. He was succeeded by George II for three years(1950-52), then George III for one year (1953) and finally George IV for one year (1957).
Tommy Trojan In the center of the USC campus stands one of the most famous collegiate landmarks in the country: Tommy Trojan. Since being unveiled in 1930 for USC’s 50th jubilee, the statue of the bronzed Trojan warrior has served not only as a popular meeting place on campus, but as a symbol of the university’s fighting spirit. Sculpted by Roger Noble Burnham, Tommy Trojan cost $10,000 to build. A $1 surcharge then on season football tickets helped pay for it. The statue is a composite of many USC football players from the late 20s, most notably 1930 Rose Bowl Player of the Game Russ Saunders and
All-American Erny Pinckert. Inscribed on the statue’s base is “THE TROJAN” and the university’s seal, with the Latin motto “Palmam qui meruit ferat (Let him who deserves it bear away the palm).” Below the seal are inscribed the qualities of the ideal Trojan: “Faithful, Scholarly, Skillful, Courageous and Ambitious.”
Cardinal and Gold Before 1895, the official color of USC was gold. The official color of the College of Liberal Arts was cardinal. The college had its own official color because it was the largest academic unit in the University. In 1895, both colors were adopted as USC’s official colors.
“Trojans” USC’s nickname, “Trojans,” originated in 1912. Up to that time, USC’s teams were called the Methodists or Wesleyans, nicknames which were not looked upon with favor by university officials. So, Warren Bovard, director of athletics and son of university president Dr. George Bovard, asked Los Angeles Times sports editor Owen Bird to select an appropriate nickname. “At this time, the athletes and coaches of the university were under terrific handicaps,” recalled Bird. “They were facing teams that were bigger and better-equipped, yet they had splendid fighting spirit. The name ‘Trojans’ fitted them.”
The Spirit Of Troy The Trojan Marching Band - known as “The Spirit of Troy” - is perhaps the most dynamic and innovative collegiate band in the nation. Named among the eight best marching bands in the country by USA Today, the band is one of the most visible tools of the University. Established in 1880, the band has played for seven Presidents, appeared in numerous movies, commercials and television shows, and has even produced several records of its own music. The band marches upwards of 80 miles a year while traveling across the land supporting almost every USC athletic team. A typical football halftime show by the band takes more than 4,000 work hours to prepare. Now 300-plus members strong, the Trojan Marching Band has tripled in size since Dr. Arthur C. Bartner became its director in 1969.

National Championships USC has long dominated the world of intercollegiate athletics. In fact, it could be argued that Troy was the “Collegiate Athletic Program of the 20th Century.” USC men and women have combined for 117 national team titles. Trojan men’s teams are tops in the nation in NCAA championships with 82 — more than any other university. Overall, USC’s men have won 95 national championships. USC has won the National Collegiate All-Sports Championship — an annual ranking by USA Today (previously The Knoxville Journal) of the country’s top men’s athletic programs — six times (1971-7274-75-77-80) since its inception in 1971. USC’s women are also a force, with 23 national team titles, all since 1976. From 1959-60 to 1984-85, USC put together an amazing streak. In each of those 26 years, at least one Trojan team won a national championship (including five crowns in both 1962-63 and 1976-77). Current streaks are held by both the USC men's water polo and tennis teams, who have won five and four straight national championships, respectively.

The USC Athletic Experience USC has a proud athletic heritage — and with good reason. Arguably, Troy could be regarded as one of the best collegiate athletic programs in the nation: · Trojan teams have won more national championships, 95 men’s (including a national-best 82 men's NCAA titles) and 23 women’s, than all but two other universities · The Trojans won at least one national team title in 26 consecutive years (1959-60 to 1984-85) · USC has won the National College All-Sports Championship — an annual ranking by USA Today (previously The Knoxville Journal) of the country’s top men’s athletic programs — six times since its inception in 1971 · USC has won the annual Crosstown Gauntlet, a year-long all-sports competition between Troy and crosstown rival UCLA, eight times (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) · Trojan male athletes have won more individual NCAA titles (303) than those from any other school in the nation (the Women of Troy have brought home another 60 individual NCAA crowns) · Troy has also established a stellar reputation and a long tradition of nurturing Olympic athletes. Since 1904, 418 Trojan athletes have competed in the Games, taking home 135 gold medals (with at least one gold in every summer Olympics since 1912), 87 silver and 65 bronze.

· Four Trojans have won the prestigious Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in America: diver Sammy Lee (1953), shot putter Parry O’Brien (1959), swimmer John Naber (1977) and Janet Evans (1989) · Two Women of Troy athletes have won the Honda-Broderick Cup as the top collegiate woman athlete of the year: Cheryl Miller (1983-84) and Angela Williams (2001-02) · USC has won six Heisman Trophy winners with the most recent winners being Carson Palmer (2002) and Matt Leinart (2004) · Along with the great accomplishments on the playing fields, USC student-athletes have received 50 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, in the top 10 among all schools. In addition, USC has had 29 first team Academic All-Americans and four athletes who were Rhodes Scholars

Marks Stadium The David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on the USC campus is one of the intimate and historical collegiate tennis facilities in the country. During winter of 2006, a sixth court was added to the main stadium, allowing for dual-match competition to be played out entirely in front of fans within the 1,000-seat venue, which also boasts a large scoreboard to allow fans to follow each match point-for-point from their stadium seat and online at www.usctrojans.com. Two of the courts are named after famous USC alumni and Wimbledon singles champions, Alex Olmedo and Stan Smith. The center court is named for USC’s 13 Grand Slam doubles champions — Byron Black, Bob Falkenburg, Luke Jensen, Murphy Jensen, Rick Leach, Bob Lutz, Gene Mako, Olmedo, Rafael Osuna, Dennis Ralston, Raul Ramirez, Ted Schroeder and Smith. Underneath the stadium is the beautiful Leonard Andrews Varsity Lounge and Team Room, along with two locker rooms. The locker rooms also have been renovated through a generous gift made by John and Michelle Katnik of Diversified Development. Each locker room features the program’s conference championship trophies, and walls are adorned with USC’s NCAA singles and doubles champions, as well as the men’s and women’s national championship trophies.
At the entrance to the stadium is a list of all 19 of the USC men’s national champion years and seven women’s tennis national championships, including a newly-added 2011 for the men’s third straight title. Plaques honoring Trojan legends Dick Leach and George Toley also adorn the entrance of Marks Stadium. The stadium was dedicated in 1973 when former Trojan stars Alex Olmedo, Stan Smith, Dennis Ralston and Bob Lutz held a tennis exhibition. The 1974 men’s NCAA Tournament was held at Marks Stadium (USC finished second).
John McKay Center
In January of 2011, the USC athletic department broke ground on the new John McKay Center, a $70 million, 110,000-square foot facility on the west side of Heritage Hall that houses meeting rooms, coaches offices and a locker room for the football program, as well as an academic center, weight room, athletic training room, and state-of-the-art digital media production facility for all of USC's 21 sports. Construction took 18 months and the building was officially opened on August 21, 2012.
Los Angeles The University of Southern California is nestled in the city of Los Angeles, the second-largest city in the United States with nearly four million residents. In fact the combined population for Los Angeles County and Orange County (located east) is close to 13 million people. Nicknamed "The City of Angels", the Los Angeles metropolitan area is the third-highest economic center in the world behind New York and Tokyo. Los Angeles is one of the most diverse cities in terms of demographics in the United States and benefits from one of the mildest climates. The average temperature is 66 degrees during the year with an average high of 75 degrees as the city receives on average just 35 days of precipitation. Not only do residents in Los Angeles enjoy year-round sunshine, but they can drive from the beach to the mountains or to the desert within a two-hour drive. With the many activities and attractions available in the area, Los Angeles has not only been a destination for many tourists, but one of the best cities in the world to call home.
