USC New York Global Conversation “Defining Future Reality” • New York • 2014
WELCOME
Welcome to the 2014 USC Global Conversation. We have brought together a unique group of technology innovators to present a glimpse into our institution’s digital future and to highlight USC’s continued leadership in the digital age. From breakthroughs in medicine to storytelling in virtual environments, society is quickly transforming through the ways we collect, analyze and translate massive amounts of data. New York is ideal for holding this conversation. Like Los Angeles, the city is a center of scholarship, art, business and innovation – a vibrant, global city that serves as an incubator for collaboration
and entrepreneurial endeavors. It is also home to more than 5,000 members of our Trojan alumni network. Today, leading research universities must have a deep connection to the digital realm to create consequential research and scholarship. USC has long been on the forefront of this technology and its application across the disciplines. Our academic community looks to you to participate in a dialogue that advances solutions to problems in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. I am pleased that you have joined our conversation.
Sincerely, Elizabeth Garrett USC Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
“This USC community calls to mind the strivings of the original Renaissance humanists, who saw little need to make a distinction between their explorations of the empirical world and their explorations of the creative world. This gave them an unparalleled ability to see new pathways that were invisible to others. C. L. Max Nikias USC President

DIGITAL INNOVATION AT USC
An international leader in fields from artificial intelligence to game design, with the largest computer science research program among American universities, USC is advancing technologies that improve the way we live and work.
USC scholars have become industry leaders in the development of virtual and augmented realities; the simulation and modeling of earthquakes and other complex systems; brain mapping; archiving, indexing and analysis of visual material; visual storytelling and data visualization; and in creating advanced online platforms for distance education and professional development. The USC Institute for Creative Technologies, whose immersive technology informed the early design of Oculus Rift, has long been a leader in virtual and emerging technologies. Its 3-D scan technology (as shown on previous page) is used to scan Hollywood actors in films such as Avatar, and the Smithsonian called on USC to help create the first presidential portrait created from 3-D scan data. USC is so committed to digital scholarship that it is investing $1 billion to help USC students across all disciplines – in science and engineering, as well as the humanities – take the technological advances in their fields even further. Virtual reality technology is being explored throughout campus to create immersive journalism and cinematic experiences, treat post-traumatic stress disorder and enhance the benefits of physical therapy. The newly formed USC Games – a collaboration between the USC School of Cinematic Arts and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering – is recognized by The Princeton Review as the No. 1 game design program in North America. USC scholars throughout campus are also joining forces to better our society

Top, right: Scientific imaging allows researchers to study organisms’ development and other complex biological events in real time to better understand key interactions and the cellular changes involved in disease. Top, left: The Leviathan Project, a research-based, experiential storytelling platform, explores new possibilities in entertainment, connecting physical and virtual worlds through the combination of creativity and emergent technology. Middle, left: Cameras with depth sensors coupled with breakthrough software analyze digital data to discern how facial shapes morph between one frame and the next, a technique which has improved the authenticity of digital performances while speeding up production. Bottom: USC students and faculty work together in spaces throughout the Interactive Media Building to explore the potential of media.
and create sustainable public health solutions. An interdisciplinary team at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the Information Sciences Institute of USC Viterbi is researching ways in which facial recognition technology can be used to combat youth sex traffickers and to help find and free victims. Keck Medicine of USC has established the USC Neurorestoration Center, a multi-institution collaboration of neural engineering, neuroscience and neurorehabilitation. There, USC students and researchers are engineering new technology that restores neurological
function while keeping the brain intact. The USC Digital Repository – a collaboration among USC Libraries, USC Information Technology Services and the USC Shoah Foundation-The Institute for Visual History and Education – is hailed as the best long-term home for digital collections of research, cultural and business value. It’s also the first of its kind in the country to provide such catalogued and searchable digital archives to commercial and educational users. USC has developed several world-class information research systems to support research, creative work and pedagogy in informatics and digital media, including brain and body imaging centers, and the experimental USC Lockheed Martin Quantum Computation Center. A number of institutes also support the quantitative social sciences and serve as physical and virtual hubs for interdisciplinary research on health care economics, improving patient-centered care, education policy, and genomics and Internet analytics. Through its investment and digital infrastructure, USC is solidifying its leadership role in gathering, interpreting, and applying digital data on a massive scale.
