2.12 billion tons of fabric waste are dumped annually, but natural materials can be repurposed by fusing, weaving, or sewing. In this Wabi Sabi workshop led by USC Roski faculty, staff, and students, participants are invited to bring old clothing or cloth to be unraveled or shredded and transformed into skeins of usable textiles. The session will include a deconstruction circle, spinning circle, and community share area.
Following a conversation with USC Vice Provost for the Arts Josh Kun, the GRAMMY-nominated New York City–based chamber music ensemble, PUBLIQuartet, will perform their latest album, What Is American, featuring creative improvisations on Oliver Wendell Holmes and Alice Coltrane, Vijay Iyer and Roscoe Mitchell, Tina Turner and Fats Waller, among others.

Enrique Martínez Celaya is an internationally exhibited contemporary artist, author, and former physicist, and the first Provost Professor of Humanities and Arts at USC. Make Mend II is a series of workshops focused on the Wabi Sabi concept of celebrating flaws and finding beauty in imperfection through renewing, reusing, and repurposing textiles. In “Tools of the Trade,” participants will create tools, including table looms, drop spindles, and knitting needles, to use on unraveled, shredded, and transformed old clothing and fabrics created during the first workshop. The spinning circle from the first workshop will also continue, and participants can learn introductory weaving, knitting, and spinning skills.

Sacrifice Zone: Los Angeles is an immersive and interactive environmental justice experience merging exhibition, performance, and activism. Through multimedia-enriched documentary theatre and film storytelling, SZLA sheds light on the damaging effects of decades of industrial pollution on South Los Angeles communities by transforming the Otis Booth Pavilion at the Natural History Museum into a home along the I-710 Corridor. Attendees will have the freedom to explore the household in the order of their choosing, going at their own pace while learning about the challenges of families living in “sacrifice zones”—the places in our city devastated by ongoing environmental pollution.
Other Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County exhibits will not be open for viewing during the live performances. Access to the installation only, without the performance, will also be available to museum visitors from Friday, January 12, through Sunday, January 28, 2024.
