Welcome to the White Coat Ceremony celebrating the members of the PharmD class of 2027.

To the PharmD class of 2027:

Today, as you take the Oath of a Pharmacist for the first time, know that we are counting on you and the innovations you will bring to our rapidly-changing world. You are now part of the healthcare continuum with the potential to save lives and improve the human condition.

As you know, the USC PharmD program excels in preparing future leaders for the field and is the nation’s pioneer in expanding the scope and impact of pharmacy education and profession. Our dedicated faculty and staff, legendary alumni network and partnerships with experts throughout the profession are eager to ensure that you have the support and mentorship to succeed throughout your career.

On behalf of the USC Mann School, welcome to the Trojan Family. I look forward to meeting you in person as you pursue your future at USC. Fight on!

Speakers

Dr. Papadopoulos, who has served as Dean of the USC Mann School since 2016, has published over 300 papers, holds numerous patents and serves on many national and international advisory committees. His research work has had major implications for endocrinology, reproduction, aging, cancer, and neurological disorders. Prior to USC, his extensive portfolio of professional experiences and accomplishments includes leadership roles at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and McGill University in Montreal. His unmatched expertise across fields and track record of bringing people together make him the ideal leader for the USC Mann School at a time when the growing convergence of biology, genomics, chemistry and medicine demands close ties between research and clinical care.

Dr. Franson joined the University of Southern California in 2020 as Professor of Clinical Pharmacy. Dr. Franson is an educator with more than 30 years of experience in institutions around the world with expertise in campus and distancebased curricular innovation, interprofessional practice / education, technology-enhanced assessment / learning, experiential education, and healthcare workforce development to serve societal needs. As a U.S. Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist and Dutch-Certified Clinical Pharmacologist she has guided national and international professional, legislative, media and commercial groups on cannabinoid clinical pharmacologic effects and cannabis user safety.

Dr. Wong, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the USC Mann School, serves as a faculty-in-residence at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, providing clinical pharmacy services for the internal medicine teams and support for the experiential education program. Dr. Wong received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2013. He then completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy followed by a PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at the University of Kentucky. Prior to joining USC, he worked as a critical care pharmacist at Cedars-Sinai. He is board-certified in critical care pharmacotherapy.

Dr. Steinberg, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and pediatrics at the USC Mann School and Keck School of Medicine, is director of the division of pediatric pharmacotherapy in the department of pediatrics at the LAC+USC Medical Center. His areas of research emphasis include predictive performance of pharmacokinetic models for dosing in children and novel pharmacotherapeutic applications of drugs.

Dr. Robert Popovian is the founder of the strategic consulting firm Conquest Advisors. He also serves as Chief Science Policy Officer at the Global Healthy Living Foundation, Senior Healthy Policy Fellow at the Progressive Policy Institute, and Visiting Health Policy Fellow at the Pioneer Institute. He previously served as Vice President, U.S. Government Relations at Pfizer.

One of the country’s foremost experts on every significant facet of biopharmaceuticals and the healthcare industry, he is a recognized authority on health economics, policy, government relations, medical affairs, and strategic planning.

Dr. Popovian has published extensively and referenced on the impact of biopharmaceuticals and health policies on costs and clinical outcomes in the most prominent medical sources and media publications, including the Clinical Economics and Outcomes Research, The Oncologist, Journal of Vaccines and Vaccinations, Journal of American Pharmacists Association, Health Science Journal, USA Today, Washington Examiner, Managed Healthcare Executive, and The Hill. He is also a sought-after speaker who has been invited to provide detailed presentations, briefings, and expert reviews for the U.S. Congress, dozens of state legislatures, and at conferences and medical symposiums throughout the country and worldwide.

He is one of the select few researchers to study and publish clinical and policy-related economic analysis and empirical data regarding emerging payment models in the U.S. healthcare system and for biopharmaceutical reimbursement. His insight and analysis also led to one of the first inclusions of health outcomes data in a labeled indication of a biopharmaceutical.

Dr. Popovian serves on the Board of Councilors of the USC Mann School and is an advisor to the Value of Life Sciences Innovation program at the USC Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics.

He completed his Doctorate in Pharmacy and Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy degrees at the University of Southern California with honors. He also completed a residency in Pharmacy Practice/Adult Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Los Angeles CountyUSC Hospital and a fellowship in Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy at USC.

He and his family reside in Los Angeles and Alexandria, Virginia.
