Salk was the gateway to where I am today. Salkehatchie taught me to study and take tests, but, most important, it helped me succeed. - Shane Carroll

Taking the path less traveled Shane Carroll, Class of 2014

Nurse Practitioner, Barnwell Pediatrics Bachelor of Science Nursing Shane Carroll never fit in the traditional classroom. And though he always had big dreams, he never wanted to take the usual route. So when Shane selected his college, it wasn’t out of his character to choose USC Salkehatchie. And when he chose a career path, it was not surprising that he chose a field in which males make up less than 10% of the workforce. Now, as a nurse practitioner at Barnwell Pediatrics, Shane Carroll is helping to fill the primary-care shortage in rural America. He credits USC Salkehatchie for making his dreams a reality. “Salkehatchie taught me to study and take tests, but, most important, it helped me succeed. Although Salk is a smaller school, I had a great college experience. I met great people and had amazing opportunities.” After completing his Associate of Science and his Associate of Arts, Shane was accepted into the nursing program offered at USC Salkehatchie. After completing his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at USC Salkehatchie, he worked as a pediatric registered nurse while continuing his education and obtaining a Masters of Science in Nursing through South University. “Salk was a great place when I was a student there. The staff was very helpful. Professors will go above and beyond for you, and the atmosphere is amazing. I loved my time at Salk and made plenty of new friends. I was also able to work on campus while attending classes, which made my experience even better.”

“I’m a Lowcountry native who decided to start at USC Salkehatchie to save money. Not only did I cut my college costs by half, I also received a quality education from instructors who treated me like family.” - Bryce Mobley

Want a STEM degree? Look here first. Bryce Mobley, Class of 2015 University Technology Services Integrated Information Technology

He started his college career at USC Salkehatchie because it was affordable, accessible and flexible. But what Bryce Mobley discovered at his local University of South Carolina campus was a pathway to a STEM career with only half the cost. “Before I started college, I was only interested in video game design. I wanted to program and create different types of games because when I got home that’s all I did - play games all day long.” But when Bryce started classes, he discovered that he had numerous career options within the technology field. “When I started college I was introduced to other parts of computer science that were interesting to me. I was exposed to different technologies – not just the gaming. I had options. I started experimenting with different computers. I chose the ITEC field. I love it.” Bryce now provides desktop support for faculty, staff and students at Palmetto College. “I have a passion for technology. I love diagnosing computer issues and helping others be successful by ensuring they have the tools they need. My two years at Salk provided an affordable way for me to find a STEM career I love. It was definitely the right choice.”

“College isn’t easy, but Salkehatchie made the transition a little easier for me. For that, I am very grateful.” - Nicole Stroble

Small Town. Big Dreams. The Right Choice. Nicole Stroble, Class of 2011 Applications Analyst, Santee Cooper Integrated Information Technology

She lived in a small town. She graduated from a small high school. The thought of attending a large college with thousands of other students terrified her. No one was going to help her pay for college. That was her responsibility. So after careful consideration, Nicole Stroble made the choice that changed her life. She started her college career at USC Salkehatchie. “I don’t think I would be where I am today if it wasn’t for USC Salkehatchie. Salkehatchie allowed me to come out of my shell at my own pace. This gave me the courage to attend the largest college campus in South Carolina, the University of South Carolina in Columbia where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Integrated Information Technology.” Today, Nicole is an applications analyst for Santee Cooper, South Carolina’s largest power producer. “I do a lot of programming, coding and interacting with teammates. Salkehatchie built the foundation upon which I was able to develop the skills needed to excel in my career.” “College isn’t easy, but Salkehatchie made the transition a little easier for me, and for that I am very grateful. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Salkehatchie and would gladly do it over again.”

At Salk, you’ll find friendly people everywhere you go. Everyone always smiles and waves. It may not seem like a lot, but when you’re having a bad day and a random person smiles and waves at you and you do the same, it’s crazy how your day can change.

Growing Our Own The nursing program at USC Salkehatchie is an asset for students seeking a medical career, allowing them to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing in their own community. Through a partnership with the USC Columbia College of Nursing, students have the opportunity to complete all four years of the nursing program at USC Salkehatchie. General education and pre-nursing courses are completed as USC Salkehatchie courses. After successful completion of general education and pre-nursing course requirements, students then apply to the upper division portion of the program. Upper division courses are offered on USC Salkehatchie’s Walterboro campus through a variety of distance-learning methodologies with most clinical practice in local hospitals and clinics. Thanks to funding from private foundations, USC Salkehatchie now offers high fidelity simulation training. The new lab provides nursing students and area healthcare providers with a centrally located simulation lab. This state-of-the-art training facility eliminates the need to travel to the USC Columbia campus for simulation activities. Graduates of our rigorous program earned a 100% first-time pass rate on the National Licensure Exam (NCLEX) in 2016 and 2017, with an overall pass rate of 99% since our first graduating class in 2010.

By attending Salkehatchie I have become more confident in not only myself but my professional abilities, as well. When you have professors who believe in you and go that extra mile just to see you succeed, you begin to believe in yourself and accomplish your dreams. - Taylor Brown, Class of 2014

2 + 2 Engineering Students interested in engineering can participate in USC Salkehatchie’s 2 + 2 program with USC Aiken. The first two years of the program are earned on our campus and students transfer to USC Aiken to complete the degree. The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Process Engineering is designed to prepare students with the technical knowledge and skills in engineering, mathematics, science and management. Program graduates will have knowledge of the processes of industry from multiple viewpoints: mechanical, manufacturing, and business.

Internships Internships provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. Students will be prepared to oversee, develop, enhance, and design processes found in industry relating to people, products, economics, and knowledge.

Our Partners Numerous community partners have joined with the university for planning, support, and development of the new program, including Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, Savannah River National Laboratory, URS, Savannah River Remediation, Kimberly Clark, BAE Systems, MTU and Bridgestone. Graduates of the engineering program will help meet the intellectual and employment needs of large and small companies throughout the region, the state, and the country.
