A Renewed Vigor this Lenten Season by Sarah Kincaid When recently reading up on traditions to partake in during the season of Lent, I more than once came across the interesting phrase, ‘a renewed vigor.’ There are three traditional practices that many Christians throughout the Church world put into practice in order to prepare themselves for Holy Week and the day of Resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. These practices to be taken up with renewed vigor during Lent are: prayer (justice towards God), fasting (justice towards self), and almsgiving (justice towards neighbor). To me the phrase renewed vigor implies that there was an existing vigorous approach toward these traditions of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in the lives of Christians. To give the word vigor more weight, words used to describe vigor are: intensity, resilient strength, validity and effectiveness. This made me question: are my existing everyday prayers, acts of self-denial, and giving vigorous, intense or valid? Can they even be measured, should they be measured?

World Missions Bureau Staff Chris Shay, Director Kristin Caddy, Asst. Director Sarah Kincaid, Sponsorship & Mission Support Coordinator

Regarding prayer: the Holy Spirit doesn’t necessarily answer our prayers in ways that we expect or in ways that our limited minds can comprehend. Regarding fasting: depending on your act of self denial this might be the most measurable and results based. But fasting in a way that exemplifies that fact that you’re fasting goes against the purpose of fasting. (see Isaiah 58:24). Regarding giving: this practice is personally measurable. You can see the money leave your bank account; you can feel your tired body after a time of volunteering. I find the act of giving to be the most fascinating. Rarely do you ever truly know the measurements of your giving. A Sunday School teacher can often feel ex-

hausted after class and feel that all his/her work was done in vain. Feelings of ‘it seems like they are never listening!’ and ‘half the time I’m asking them to sit back down, and constantly having to repeat myself.’ can be overwhelming. Many of us remember Sunday School teachers and the love they demonstrated. I still remember my first Sunday School teacher Mrs. Kay and how much I enjoyed being in her classroom. The monetary giving we participate in, often feels like a drop in the bucket, especially when giving to the great needs that exist overseas. What you might not know is that a person’s life might be completely changed because of your $50 donation that bought their family a goat. Now that their (Continued on page 2)

family has income, school is an option. Education of children is a crucial element in overcoming poverty. (See the Love In Action article on page 3) If vigor is absent from our lives, how do we discover it? I believe what might rob us of knowing and experiencing vigor is when we get caught up and too focused on the outcome of the practice we are participating in. The hopeful (and sometimes selfish) results of these practices shouldn’t overcome the beauty of the process and journey we go on when we participate. When I think of Jesus and what I know of His life, I realize that he had to experience the process and journey too. He knew that God would be faithful through the process and faithful at the end of the process. Isaiah chapter 9 is titled Hope in the Messiah and there is a great anticipation of God’s promises in this chapter. The chapter ends with the statement, “The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!” The Lord is passionate about his commitment towards us! In return we should also be passionate and vigorous in our prayer, fasting and giving. Pray with great faith, fast with faith and a reliant spirit and give faithfully, honestly and generously. And enjoy Christ’s Passion for you with a renewed vigor.

Global Mission Team - Page 4

Global Mission Team: Haiti ately, a rugged, 2’X4’ cross was mounted on the platform wall, reminding everyone of the why of our mission--our motivation is the love of God.

by Major Abe Tamayo What started as a mission trip to Haiti, a nation still reeling in the havoc of disaster and chaos, has transformed into a mission journey of my own heart. Our team of eight men assembled together on the eve of February 8, most of us unknown to each other, quickly bonded through the ideals of the mission and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Eight would be strangers departed from Chicago to Port-au-Prince, endured an arduous van ride to Jacmel, a 73 mile drive which took three and one-half hours to journey through the mountains of Haiti. Over the course of the next eight days, the team worked diligently to build four new houses as well as to rebuild the Corps Community Center (which was the equivalence of ten homes) by removing canvas walls, restructuring the frame work and building plywood walls, doors and windows in their place. The real mission, however, had little to do with construction, it was about demonstrating compassion toward a people who had nothing, and then was further devastated by an earthquake and cholera outbreak. Our mission, as always, is people. People such as an elderly woman, whom we affectionately nicknamed Grandma, lived directly across the street from The Salvation Army Corps Community Center, in a framed structure covered in poly tarps, no windows, no doors, and no security. In its place now is a new home, new furnishings and, most of all, a locking door and windows, creating a home which is both safe and dry, just what

‘Grandma’ needed most. Our second home, 10’X20’ was to house two separate families, each related to the other, but distinct from each other. At their request, a solid plywood wall was built in the center to create separate entrances, in essence a duplex, providing private dwellings for each family. While each side is only 10’ by 10’, the new homeowners danced across the threshold, expressing their joy in smiles and tears. The accounts of the elderly, families, children and an entire culture touched by this mission trip overflow the imagination, each expressing their gratitude with sincerity and deep affection. The new Corps Community Center now has walls, doors and windows complete with electric lights and fans, allowing for worship, schooling and other community gatherings. Most appropri-

Lasting Impressions Most impressive to see was the indelible spirit of the Haitian people. While living in primitive, difficult conditions, they all had a spirit that remains indescribable. Theirs was a joy and peace that passes conventional understanding. It is often said that America is the richest nation in the world. While certainly a wealthy country when it comes to money, we are not the richest by far. Not when compared with a culture that is steep in family structure, simple by way of living, and thankful for each new day, greeting each other and even strange Americans with a smile and a warm greeting. Another reality that will remain deep within my contrite heart is this: The Salvation Army is to be commended for its grand operations, services of schools, medical clinics, children’s homes, and community centers, each right where they belong, in the heart of the community they serve. The Army is truly a beacon of hope and light, shining forth Jesus in a land deep in poverty and spiritual darkness. Having returned to the land of plenty, I have discovered a gem that has long been mislaid in America: a genuine sense of gratitude and humility. Indeed, I have come away from Haiti with much more than I could ever leave amongst its good people, for which I am most grateful. I hope to return soon and continue the good work which Christ Jesus has begun through each of us. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Are you interested in applying to serve on a Summer Mission Team or Global Mission Team? Summer Mission Team is an eight-week leadership development program that invites young people into a deeper relationship with the Lord through participation in a team missions experience. Applicants must be active Salvationists between the ages of 18 and 28. Applications for Summer Mission Team 2012 will be available in early Fall 2011. Global Mission Teams are 1-2 week short-term missions opportunities for adults ages 18 and older. Depending on the projects and assignments of Global Mission Teams, the participants may need to have specific experiences, skills or backgrounds. With several different Global Mission Teams being offered each year, many different Central Territory Salvationists will be given the opportunity to participate. Overseas Personnel - Page 6

Meet Our New Overseas Personnel Matthew Beatty Officer Training College Caretaker / Driver Philippines Territory Matthew Beatty, a soldier of the Kansas City Northland Corps, visited the Philippines in 2010 as part of a corps mission trip through the Partners in Mission Next-Steps program. After a week of service and ministry there, Matthew did not feel ready to leave. His experiences had impacted him greatly and he had formed many significant friendships. In February 2011, Matthew left his position as a Salvation Army employee in Kansas City in order to move to the Officer Training College in the Philippines, where he will serve for one year. While Matthew's official title is Officer Training College Caretaker/Driver, many of Matthew's other credentials such as being a licensed ham radio operator have also been put to good use in his appointment. Captain Christopher Marques Assistant Territorial Youth Secretary Japan Territory Chris Marques first became interested in Asian cultures in high school when some of his classmates participated in an exchange program with a Japanese sister city. That interest continued to grow and Chris eventually began teaching himself the Japanese language. In the fall of 2003, Chris began a two

-year seminary program at The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training in Chicago, Ill. During a short summer break from Training in 2004, Chris made his first trip to Japan. Upon his return he kept meeting Japanese people and learning from them. After being ordained in 2005 Captain Chris Marques was appointed as the corps officer (pastor) of the Beloit, Wisconsin Corps. In 2006 he returned to Japan on a vacation and had the opportunity to speak at a youth seminar. God continued to work in Chris' life and give him a love for the people of Japan, a place where less than ten percent of the population profess to be Christian. During the summer of 2009 Chris assumed a new appointment as the corps officer of the Ishpeming, Michigan Corps where he was stationed until he departed for Japan in February of 2011. Chris is looking forward to serving God's flock in a different context and to putting into action his desire to share the love of Jesus in Asia. Captain Marques was in Tokyo at the time of the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011. He asks that we continue to pray for the people of Japan, especially the children as they try to process all that they have experienced. He asks that we pray for strength and rest for the relief workers. Damon Winters Technical Advisor—Projects Haiti Recovery & Development Office Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Damon Winters comes from a heritage of Salvation Army missionaries who served in Zambia, India and Korea. When Damon was a child, his family lived in Zambia where his dad served as the chief medical officer at The Salvation Army's Chikankata Hospital. After returning to the United States, Damon continued to be interested in international missions and participated on many mission trips including trips to Chile, the Bahamas, and Honduras. During high school, Damon's calling to overseas ministry was confirmed as he spent a summer working with The Salvation Army World Service Office. He went on to obtain a degree in international missions from Wheaton College. In February 2011 Damon departed for Haiti where he will serve for oneyear as the Technical Advisor - Projects for the Haiti Recovery and Development Office. On the Move Commissioner Sue Swanson has assumed a new appointment as World President of Women’s Ministries. Please be in prayer for Commissioner Swanson as she takes on this new role. Envoys Bob and Vicki Poff recently concluded their overseas appointments in Haiti and have moved to Jamaica to take on new assignments.
