Come and See What the Lord Has Done by Belen Hood Just after Mother's Day, nine ladies and myself traveled to the Kenya West Territory. We were invited to the Kenya West Women’s Conference, held at the Kakunga Salvation Army. The theme for this weekend was “Come and See”, and oh the beauty we saw in Kenya! The land itself is breathtaking, but the people of Kenya are so beautiful. Our hosts, Commissioner Florence Malabi and Colonel Grace Mnyampi, are two beautiful women of God who welcomed us and made us feel right at home in Kenya. As we entered the conference in Kakunga, the soldiers were lined up at the entry way to greet us with cheers, clapping and waving us in. What a humbling feeling to be welcomed with such warmth. That weekend was filled with encouragement, songs and praises to the Lord, and over 1,500 women were in attendance. We also had an open air meeting before our Sunday service. Hundreds of women came out for this event, and I must say, God is alive in Kenya! On Sunday, Colonel Dawn Heatwole preached from John 4, and we were reminded of the woman at the well and her words, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did.” How

amazing to know that Jesus sees us in America, in Kenya, and to the ends of the earth. After the sermon Commissioner Florence gave the alter call and the field filled with women coming forward, praying on their knees. What a lovely sight of our God working in the lives of women. We had an opportunity to visit the Territorial Headquarters in Kakamega. We found that they also use this space for their training college to train future Salvation Army officers. The Kenyans have property purchased for their future training college, but still lack the funds for having it built. Commissioner Malabi said that they have many students who have been called to officership, but without the place to house them they are limited to the amount of students they can accept. We pray that God would open doors for this college to be built, and that He would guide the future of The Salvation Army in Kenya. As the new week started off, we were blessed as we headed out to the Madivini Corps. We were able to paint the corps officer’s home. This home had not seen a coat of paint so the job was big, but we were up for the challenge. Commissioner Florence, who is so loved by the officers and soldiers, worked along side us as we painted at the Midivini and the Luyeshe officer's quarters. God showed His goodness once again-we had enough paint to paint the sanctuary as well! The corps people and officers at Luyeshe were so excited and knew

that the coming Sunday there would be great joy to the congregation. In the middle of the week we visited the Joyland School for disabled children. The principal reminded us that each one of us is challenged, the difference is to what degree. He told us “You will leave this place with more joy!”, and we did. The children were a delight, they performed skits and sang for us. We were so blessed! We were able to see first hand that the schools in Kenya need our support. God has blessed the United States with so much (1Corinthians 9:10) and surely He wants us to spread the harvest to His people. The following day we visited Kibos Primary School for visually impaired. The motto: Disability is not Inability. We visited the classroom and were able to see kindergarteners learning Braille. After visiting all the classrooms, the children gathered together and performed through song and musical instruments. Some of these instruments were homemade, so it was so impressive to see the sounds and talents the children have. During my trip to Kenya, I was convicted about sponsorship. I specifically wanted to give to a school that could use help with children's' education. I am reminded of God's Word in Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you.” I prayed about it and now sponsor The Kuywa Special School. God has blessed me by allowing this trip to Kenya, and I want to be a blessing to those in Kenya!

Rwanda & Burundi Territory Preschools The two small countries of Rwanda and Burundi are situated in the midwestern part of Africa between Uganda and Tanzania. In the last fifty years the people of Rwanda have endured a most painful history of Genocide, government corruption, and political conflict, but within this territory of our Salvation Army incredible work is being done in the lives of God’s children. Currently, the Rwanda and Burundi Territory have seven preschools that operate in rural towns, grassy fields, rented churches, and refugee villages. Most recently, the Rubirizi, Rubuye, and Runda preschools have been established in the last 6 months and are already

seeing enrolment numbers of 50 and more! Photo: Carolina Tuftstrom

In Rwanda and Burundi, preschoolers are considered to be children from the age of 3 through 7 years old. In most of the territory’s seven schools, one or two teachers are responsible for up to 100 preschoolers within one room! Another difficulty facing the teachers and corps officers of these schools is lack of payment – their salaries come directly from the children’s school fees. Regardless of a family’s ability to pay, the teachers and Corps Officers are willing to risk payment because of their determination to care for and educate these children.

seem, they are overshadowed by the greater vision for the future held by the teachers and corps officers. Plans for dance competitions, new buildings, soccer tournaments, and teacher conferences are on their hearts – but the Rwanda and Burundi Territory is in need of dedicated sponsors to catch the vision and support the future of their children and families. If you would like to partner with the efforts of the Rwanda and Burundi Territory preschools, please contact the World Missions Bureau Sponsorship Program at missions@usc.salvationarmy.org.

Meet Ceamona Taube

India South Eastern Territory

In June Sponsorship and Mission Support Coordinator Sarah Kincaid transferred to a new position working for The Salvation Army’s Chicago Northside Adult Rehabilitation Center. We are grateful to Sarah for the great contribution she has made to the Sponsorship Program for the past 5 years and we will miss her greatly! We are pleased to introduce the new Sponsorship and Mission Support Coordinator, Ceamona Taube. Ceamona has a passion for working with children. She is a certified teacher and recently served as the Children’s Ministries Manager at The Salvation Army Grand Rapids Kroc Center. As a life-long Salvationist and two-time Summer Mission Team member and leader, Ceamona is well qualified to take on this role. We appreciate your support and patience during this time of transition. Ceamona can be contacted at 847-294-2065 or Missions@usc.salvationarmy.org.

The Salvation Army India South Eastern Territory, one of our Partners in Mission, is comprised of the Tamil-speaking part of Southern India. There are many exciting and important programs taking places within the territory, and they have asked us to join them in prayer for the following ministries. Child Development Centers—A social program through which children are provided support for their studies by giving them books, writing materials, school uniforms, and tuition. There are 8 different child development centers and nearly 2000 children are benefitted yearly. Youth Work— Recently the territory has conducted Corps Cadet rallies in various divisions, districts, and ex-

tension areas. So many youngsters were enriched spiritually through these rallies. Pray that they will continue to grow in the Lord and share their faith with others. New Corps Opening—There is a new corps building being constructed for a congregation in the Tenkasi Division. In this corps there are many young adults who have graduated from school and are seeking job opportunities. These young people have specifically requested prayer as they want to be witnesses for Christ. Territorial Women’s Department—The women’s ministries, in addition to the spiritual development, are teaching women practical skills including handicrafts, soap and candle making, and screenprinting.

Campers Creatively Unite with Partners in Mission

Army Opens in Greenland

This summer the students of the Western Division Music Camp had an opportunity to learn about their Partners in Mission, the Jamaica East and Suriname Divisions of the Caribbean Territory. During one of their evening programs the students skyped with the Divisional Commander of Jamaica East who shared about their division’s music programs, the territorial music camp CARIMI, and how music is used in worship in Jamaica. The kids were excited to ask him questions, learn about life in Jamaica, and realize that they have many similarities to the people who live in Jamaica. While geographically the music campers in the Western Division and Salvationists in Jamaica are separated, they are united in Christ and similar in the ways they use music to worship God. An offering collected during Sunday morning worship and the final concert, which was doubled by the Western Division Music Department, will be used to help purchase timbrels for Suriname and a PA system for Jamaica East.

Similarly, during an evening program at the Kansas/Western Missouri Division Music Camp, students discovered that it is the rainy season in their Partner in Mission location, the India South Eastern Territory, learned a little bit about the culture of India, and engaged in activities to help them understand the inequality of resources available to people around the world. The students made beaded key chains to represent a variety of preventable diseases that afflict many people around the world, which also included a bead representing the hope that someday the cures and treatments for these diseases will be available to all people. At the conclusion of the evening the children were given the opportunity to turn in their beaded key chains so they could be sold at the final program, with the proceeds going to World Services. While this turning in their key chains was optional, 117 children decided to turn in their key chains in to help raise money for others in need around the world. The key chain sales, combined with an offering taken during the final program, yielded $160 for World Services.

On August 1, The Salvation Army will officially open work in Greenland under the leadership of newly commissioned Lts. Magnus and Petura Haraldsen who were trained in Norway. With this new opening, The Salvation Army will be working in 125 countries around the world!
