Lt. Judith Fetzer tutoring Laotian immigrants “Having worked with Mission: Literacy materials since 2009, I am an advocate of this Bible-based tool that instills a love of reading in emergent readers. Mission: Literacy easily fits into the 40 Developmental Asset framework which defines excellence in Kroc Center ministry with young people. These assets help us aim our time and programming at what matters most in youth development. The material clearly outlines measurable outcomes and encourages communication between tutors, parents and school teachers. Overall, the program helps children achieve in school and become confident readers who read for pleasure as well as knowledge. Bible stories are the text which expose students to phonics and sight-reading skills. These stories teach ethics and morality which, with consistent exposure help build positive values and positive identity in children-- parts of child development that are most difficult to impart to kids in today’s cultural climate.” Lt. Judith Fetzer
Volunteers rock our world! This wonderful tutor works with students at South Bend Kroc. She stated, “You do not need to know my name, I do this because it brings me great joy to work with children who struggle to read or have difficulty comprehending the English language. To see the look on their faces when they discover the excitement of reading and learning about Jesus is worth my efforts. I am greatly rewarded!”

It is absolutely a wonderful program (and did I say it is free), it can be very useful to show your United Way output measurements while helping children in your community to be better in reading - so that they can be better at school - and feel better about themselves - while instilling the values of Go d’s Wo rd in their hearts! Go to the w ebsite www.salvationarmynj.org/misisonliteracy and read for yourselves all about this great opportunity. . . !”

Informational tutor training– register now! Know the facts - (Available at www.illiteracy in America.com) “1.2 million teens hit American streets every June unable to read or write,” reports ABC anchor Brian Williams. “Detroit, MI epitomizes this country’s educational dilemma: 76% dropout/flunk out rate, resulting in an astonishing 47% of Detroiters being functionally illiterate.”
(Frosty Wooldridge)
Can America sustain this accelerating illiteracy epidemic? Look at Chicago, Denver, Houston, and any other large city where gangs, graffiti, crime, and drugs dominate. How did they sink to that level?
CNN reported on August 30, 2010, “7,000 American
high school students drop out every day; one every 26 seconds!” That is how it happens!
