Roofs for Papua New Guinea In Papua New Guinea, The Salvation Army is growing rapidly with new officers building new corps every year. When these officers start a new corps they build the church and their quarters themselves out of bush materials like sticks and grasses. One of the challenges these officers face is the elements. Papua New Guinea is a tropical island near Australia which gets anywhere from 70 to 120 inches of precipitation per year. The officers’ thatched-roof homes require a lot of maintenance and will often leak, which compromises their time for ministry as well as their family’s safety. During the territorial Central Bible and Leadership Institute (CBLI) 2012, campers raised funds to purchase new metal roofs for the officers of Papua New Guinea. Metal roofs are able to sustain the heavy rain fall in Papua New Guinea, and require less maintenance than the thatched-roofs.

Throughout the 10 day camp, all age groups gathered together during freetime to make small metal pins and metal key rings to represent the new metal roofs to be purchased in Papua New Guinea. Each night, these handmade pins and key rings were available for purchase at the united meeting. The CBLI campers raised over $8,000 to build new metal roofs for The Salvation Army in Papua New Guinea, and an additional $5,000 contribution from Territorial Headquarters was added to the project. Thanks to the funds raised by the Central Territory, 22 roofs were able to be purchased for Salvation Army officers and their families! This means that our friends in Papua New Guinea will have more time for ministry and safer homes for their families. Are you looking for a unique way to raise funds for World Services? The World

Perspective on Life in Japan Submitted by Captain Chris Marques, Assistant to the Territorial Youth Secretary, Japan Territory It seems impossible that I have already completed half of my overseas term in Japan. Although I can converse and read a lot more Japanese now, I am still taking classes and studying in my spare time. After all the effort I have put forth, it is something I hope to keep up, even when I return home. When I am not planning events or doing routine work at THQ, I am usually out supporting various corps in the Tokyo area: leading devotions, messages, games or teaching English, for example. But I really enjoy getting out of Tokyo and seeing more of the country whenever possible. I was blessed to visit Hiroshima for youth councils and Kyoto/western Japan for youth camp this summer. While in some ways it is liberating to be able to focus 100% on youth, there are certainly things I miss from being a corps officer such as having my own office, being able to drive,

investing in the same group of people every week, and being able to manage and do more individually - not to mention food, family, and friends. Most of the youth are concentrated in the greater Tokyo area, leaving the rest scattered across western and northern Japan. There are many challenges such as the aging population, low birth rate, connecting Christian youth across the country, and extremely busy schedules of youth and adults. Enjoying free time without feeling guilty and using more than a week of vacation a year is a big challenge for most Japanese- especially those in the Army! Next year, the territory’s theme will be focused on youth. There will be a national youth councils and youth camp, as well as an opportunity to visit Korea’s Youth Congress. Beyond the events and programs, I am really praying for relationships to be made and for us to be more open to people who are new to the Army. I want to encourage and challenge our corps to make youth a real priority in their

weekly schedules. We need courage and compassion to reach out, and determination to keep trying despite setbacks or disappointments. Japanese people tend to stay in close concentric circles of select friends or family, and it can be hard for them to open up to strangers. Please pray for increased partnership between the few churches of Japan, more passion for youth outreach in each corps, and finding creative/fresh ways to connect regularly. I also certainly appreciate your prayers for me to learn more of the language, and to be spiritually strong as well.

Pray for reconciliation and harmony in these tense areas, and overall peace and unity within the country. Also, please be in prayer for the general election which is planned for March 2013. Food Relief Programs—The Salvation Army Kenya East Territory is preparing to embark on some food relief programs in drought stricken areas. Please pray for this effort and the families who are affected by hunger and extreme poverty. Mali Region Training of Cadets in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—Since The Salvation Army in Mali is still a small region without its own training college, cadets are trained in another French-speaking territory, the DRC. The Mali Region is in the process of sending three cadets to Training. Please be in pray that the necessary funding would be available for this training and for the cadets who will be preparing for officership. Expanding the work of The Salvation Army—The Mali Region has started Salvation Army work in its neighboring country of Burkina Faso where there are outposts in the city of Bobo Dioulasso and in the capital, Ouagadougou. The Mali Region recently opened an outpost in the country of Chad and has made some contacts in Benin. Please be in prayer for The Salvation Army’s work in these new areas. Need for Officers— Please pray that God will open doors for more officers to be appointed to the Mali Region as there is a great need for additional officers.

world services >>> Penny Wars with a Twist: A World Services Fundraising Idea At the beginning of the fundraiser put two clear jars near the chapel entrance. Each Sunday males will put their pennies into one jar and females will put their pennies (and other loose change) into another jar. Dollars can be put into the opponent’s jar and will be subtracted from the total for the team. This encourages bigger gifts to cancel out the opposing team’s pennies! Challenge everyone in the corps to participate. Hold the competition for 68 weeks and see which team can collect the most pennies for World Services. –Idea submitted by Captain David Mowers Are you looking for additional resources and materials to help you with your World Services fundraising efforts? Visit resources.centralmissions.org for fundraising ideas, promotional materials, and bulletin inserts.
