Summary Description: This course will provide students with the skills required to engage audiences and individuals who are potential donors and supporters of nonprofit organizations. Topics: research and analysis of audiences; development of presentations focused on the benefits to the audience; the call to action; practice of presentation skills that ensure masterful delivery; the extemporaneous speech; development and use of appropriate visual aids; handling of the question and answer period; dealing with the media; the speaker’s image; use of humor, personal stories, analogies. Course Objectives: 1. To understand the needs of diverse audiences and how to prepare for them. 2. To learn the Five Point Presentation development principle to apply to written speeches. 3. To apply the power of persuasion to presentations, to elicit the appropriate response to the call to action. 4. To practice confident delivery skills that engage audiences, including breathing and relaxation, and use of voice, and to learn how to include the use of stories, anecdotes and humor. 5.

To understand the importance of the extemporaneous speech.

6. To develop visual aids and to understand which styles are appropriate for different audiences. 7. To practice the Q & A portion of the presentation, and to learn how to diffuse challenging questions. Required Reading: “You are the Message� by Roger Ailes. Additional books are recommended, for personal discovery.


Grading Criteria: Weekly Homework Assignments 15% Several short assignments will be assigned throughout the course. Class Participation 40% Public Speaking requires continuous practice. Students will be expected to participate fully in the practice of all Skills Requirements Development and Use of Visual Aids, Handling of the Q&A 15% The ability to insert appropriate visuals into a presentation and to field questions are vital to the success of a presentation Final Presentation to an Invited Audience 30% This will be staged on the final class night (June 21) when all participants will deliver a Five Minute presentation (this time may change according to the number of students who enroll for the course). Curriculum: Session One: Introduction to the power of effective Public Speaking. Class will interview and introduce a partner, stating their goals and expectations, to benchmark individual skills. Evaluations will be provided by instructor. A discussion on the importance of delivery, breathing and relaxation skills will be followed by practice. One third of the class will be videotaped and evaluated while delivering a speech on skills learned since the beginning of the class. Homework: Read Chapters 1 and 2 of You are the Message. Review the Handout, Audience Research. Identify a potential audience, or one already addressed, and develop three simple message points. Bring to Session Two. Session Two: Dynamic Delivery Skills and the Speech to Persuade Review Delivery Skills to include eye connection, body language, gestures, movement, stance, facial animation, connection with audience, voice and confidence-building skills. Instructor will lead discussion on visual aids and the Q & A. Students will discuss homework from Session 2, with a partner, to decide if changes or augmentation is required for their presentations. Each student will then present with videotaping and evaluation. Homework: Read Chapters 6 & 7. Look for appropriate humorous quotes, anecdotes, etc. for insertion into presentations.


Session Three: Audience Research and the Five Point Principle Review of Session One. Instructor will review Audience Research and Five Point Principle. In pairs, students will discuss their homework from Session 1 and make changes where necessary. One third of the class will deliver this outline, with videotape and evaluation. Homework: Read Chapters 3, 4 & 5 of You are the Message. Review Handouts on Visual Aids and Handling the Q & A. Decide on appropriate visuals for their final presentation.

Session Four: Delivery of Final Presentation. Delivery of presentations in IPJ auditorium. Individual speakers will tell audience which organization they audience) represent. Audience members will receive a simple evaluation form for each speaker. Speakers will deliver presentations, with two questions from audience. Speeches will be videotaped and evaluated by Instructor.
