7th Annual Action Research Conference May 14-15, 2010 · University of San Diego

Call for Proposals 2010 Action Research Conference Theme: Empowerment and action research: Personal growth, professional development, and social change in educational and community settings. The „family‟ of action research includes a diverse collection of orientations and methods related to personal growth, professional development, and social change. A common feature in all the orientations is empowerment. Although the term can be used in quite a clichéd manner, this year‟s conference will approach authentic empowerment both as a practice and as an aspiration. In this regard, we draw from Paulo Freire‟s assertion that “hope needs practice in order to become historical concreteness.” In essence, in our view, empowerment is about the „invention‟ of a genuine democratic practice for the 21 st century and the relationship of such a practice to a wide variety of social sectors and domains, including education, community life, cultural expression, the world of work, health and wellness, and economic and political structures. Hence, this year‟s USD-SOLES Action Research Conference takes up the theme of empowerment in action research at the personal, professional, and political levels.
