Course Description The purpose of this course is to provide graduate students with an opportunity to receive three graduate credits in the Leadership Studies program for participating in and/or attending conferences, institutes, or other events related to their growth as scholarprofessionals. Students enrolling in the special topics course(s) will be responsible for attending all conference events and completing the assignment as noted below. The focus of EDLD 581 is the CCLDI (Community College Leadership Development Initiatives) Summer Leadership Academy, an annual leadership conference sponsored by CCLDI, hosted at USD. Students must attend all academy activities and complete the assigned reflective essay by the deadline mutually established between professor and student(s). Course Objectives 1. Learn about the factors that influence leadership in community colleges. 2. Examine the critical roles of different administrative positions within community colleges and the significance (and complexity) of their interplay. 3. Understand what strategies aspiring and practicing community college leaders use to enhance their leadership skills. 4. Establish a leadership network among colleagues at the conference. 5. Reflect on best practices and shared information regarding the practice of academic leadership in higher education. Course Requirements In addition to attending all the required sessions and participating in academy activities, students are required to complete a rigorous, reflective written assignment for this course, hereafter referred to as the reflective essay. If you prefer to be assigned a grade for the course before the end of the summer term, you must complete the paper on or before August 10, 2009 and submit to the professor at that time. If you prefer to be assigned a grade for the course in the fall semester, you have until the 10th week of the fall term to complete your paper and submit it for credit to the professor. You will be assigned an “I or incomplete for EDLD 581 should you choose this option.

Students’ grades in this course are based on attendance at course meetings, academy events, and completion of the essay. The essay should make reference to academy faculty and additional outside readings if relevant to the topic. The essay should cite any references in APA format; it should be double-spaced, and be written in 12-point TNR font. The essay should be 8-10 pages in length. The purpose of the essay is to focus on one topic of interest to the student, and to examine that topic from multiple, critical perspectives, including the student’s own personal experience with or knowledge of the topic. Other perspectives might include those of additional academy participants, academy faculty, academic scholars who have written on the topic, colleagues of the student, or others in his or her professional network. The outcome of the paper should be that the student comes to know the topic deeply as well as broadly. It should have personal and professional meaning for the student. Course Readings No readings are assigned this summer. Following are recommended reading if you are interested in academic administration. You might also use selections from these texts as citations in your reflective essay if you choose to include outside sources. Diamond, R.M., ed. Field guide to academic leadership.
