Known for many reasons as "America's Finest City," San Diego has an almost perfect climate with warm, sunny days and cool evenings. The museums of Balboa Park, the Old Globe Theatre, the World Famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the beaches, the opera, and downtown San Diego and La Jolla are only minutes away.

Our Graduate Community Welcome! Congratulations on your admission and welcome to the SOLES graduate community. SOLES is a diverse community and it hosts a wide variety of academic programs. The SOLES Graduate Student Association (SGSA) seeks to bring SOLES’ graduate student population together through social and educational events and activities both on and off campus. Each graduate program has its own representative who voices the concerns and needs of his or her constituents. We even have a first year representative whose purpose is to serve SOLES’ first year graduate students. Office of International Students and Scholars The OISS is committed to helping our international students and scholars make the most of their education and stay at USD by providing them with opportunities to interact and learn from other members of the USD international community through various educational and socio-cultural programs and events. The OISS can also assist with visa and immigration concerns.
Professional Development Grants In an effort to support the development of a professional, scholastic and social community within SOLES, the SGSA awards supplemental grants to graduate students who wish to participate in professional development opportunities such as conferences, workshops and seminars.

Financial Aid

Eligibility for Aid SOLES graduate students are eligible to apply for funds from the Office of Financial Aid as long as they are: • A United States citizen or eligible non-citizen with a valid Social Security Number • Enrolled at least half time as a regular student in an eligible degree, certificate or credential program. Half-time is 4.5 units for master’s and credential students and 3 units for doctoral students.
All incoming and continuing SOLES graduate students in good standing are eligible to apply for SOLES scholarships and the SOLES Loans program, regardless of citizenship. Some scholarships require that the student be enrolled in a minimum number of units each semester.
Applying for Aid The first step in applying for financial aid is to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you have not yet submitted your FAFSA, we recommend that you do so as soon as possible. The FAFSA can be found online at www.fafsa.gov Need-Based Awards Your FAFSA will be submitted to the University of San Diego’s Office of Financial Aid. Financial aid eligibility is the difference between the total cost of attendance at USD and the amount you are expected to contribute (EFC). This total cost includes tuition, fees, room and board, an allowance for books, supplies, and other incidental expenses, and a travel allowance when warranted. The aid available to graduate students through the Office of Financial Aid consists of federal loans and the USD Graduate Grant. Please note that your initial financial aid award will be determined under the assumption that you will be taking a full-time course load. If you will be attending on a part-time basis you must notify the Office of Financial Aid in writing in order for your award to be adjusted accordingly. Your SOLES academic advisor can assist you in determining how many units you will be taking. Scholarships You are also encouraged to apply for scholarships, which may be based on need or merit and are awarded by entities other than the Office of Financial Aid. Scholarships are available through SOLES as well as through outside sources, and amounts and deadlines to apply vary. Accessing Your Financial Aid Award • Log in to the portal at http://my.sandiego.edu • As long as your have submitted your FAFSA on time, your Financial Aid Award is typically posted by the Office of Financial Aid within a few weeks of your admission to SOLES. You will receive an email when your award is posted. • When your award is available you can view your award, your estimated cost of attendance, your aid requirements and a guide to understanding your financial aid award in the Financial Aid Status channel under the New Student tab or the One Stop Services tab.
Understanding Your Award and Next Steps • A document titled “Understanding Your Financial Aid Award” is available on your MySanDiego portal under “Financial Aid Status”. This guide, developed by the Office of Financial Aid, will give you the information you need in order to determine how to proceed. • Please note that additional steps are required in order for your aid to be credited to your student account. These steps are detailed on MySanDiego and the online checklist of the requirements you need to fulfill will be updated as the necessary documents are received. • If after reading “Understanding Your Financial Aid Award” you are still confused or in need of assistance, we invite you to contact the One Stop Student Center, which encompasses the business transactions of the Office of Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and the Registrar. Counselors are happy to sit down with you to discuss your aid. If you are not able to come to campus you may also contact One Stop via email or phone.
Contacting the One Stop Student Services Center The focus of the One Stop Center is to provide personalized face-to-face advising, and students are encouraged to drop in to meet with a counselor. Since the focus of the center is to serve students in person, when you call, your call will likely be routed to a phone menu which will assist you in contacting one of the three home offices: financial aid, student accounts, or the registrar. You are also welcome to contact One Stop by email. A counselor will respond within two business days, although 90% of the time they are able to answer in less than a day. If you have a USD email address, please send your inquiries from that address. Please include your student or applicant ID number for a more expedited response.

MySanDiego Portal & Student Resources You may have already used the MySanDiego portal to check your application status prior to being admitted. If you are not yet familiar with MySanDiego, now is a great time to learn! As an admitted student you can explore student resources and access your financial aid award when it becomes available, and as an enrolled student you can register for classes, make a payment to your student account, buy a parking permit, upload a photo for your student ID, and much more.
Accessing the Portal • To begin, go online and navigate to http://my.sandiego.edu • Please note that it may take several days from the receipt of your admission decision for your admitted student information to appear in the portal. • If you have not yet submitted your enrollment deposit, please reference the email sent to you by the Office of Graduate Admissions upon the receipt of your application for your log-in information: a nine-digit Applicant ID and six-digit PIN. If you have forgotten it, click on the link in the bottom left-hand corner that says “Applicants Only Forgot ID/Password” and follow the instructions to receive your log-in information. • If you have already submitted your enrollment deposit and it has been processed, you will be able to open a student account. Please allow 24-48 hours for your new account or any changes in your status to become active. To create your account, click on the “Open An Account” link underneath the log-in button and follow the instructions. Have the following information handy: • Your USD ID number • Your Date of Birth • The last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. International students who do not have a SSN should input 0000.
Setting up Your USD Email Your USD email account is created when you open a student account on MySanDiego (see the fourth bullet point under “Accessing the Portal”, above). Once your account has been created this is the only email address the University will use to contact you, so please be sure to check it frequently.

Course Registration & Grades Please be sure to consult your SOLES academic adviser before registering for any courses. When you have determined which classes you should take in your first semester, you can look up the classes and register using the Registration Tools channel under the One Stop Services tab. When your grades are posted, you can view them under the Academic Records channel under the One Stop Services tab.
Textbooks You can access textbook information for your courses by navigating to Registration Tools under the One Stop Services tab. Click “Detailed Student Schedule”, then click on the Course Material icon to the right of the course information. Once your professor sends textbook information to the campus bookstore it will be available at the link.
Student ID Card & Campus Cash Once you are registered for classes you can get your student ID card by bringing a valid photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport) to the Campus Card Office in the Hahn University Center, Room 127. Your ID card can be used to access rooms on campus, store Campus Cash and meal plans, and check out items from the library. You can manage your Campus Cash account by accessing Campus Cash online via the My Campus Services channel under the One Stop Services tab or the New Student tab.
Meal Plans You are welcome to eat at any campus dining facility by paying with Campus Cash, cash or credit/debit card, but if you would like to purchase a University meal plan you may do so in the My Meal Plan channel under the My Personal Info tab.
Parking Permits All USD students, faculty and staff who wish to park on campus are required to purchase a parking permit. Permits can be purchased via the MySanDiego portal in the My Campus Services channel under the One Stop Services tab or the New Student tab.
Copley Library Resources Search for materials, renew items, view the online reserves for your courses and get research assistance from campus librarians under the Library tab.
