Goals of an Internship or Leadership Practical Experience The course serves as an integration of theory and practice; an opportunity for participants to take what they have learned in their courses and to use this knowledge in an experiential environment. The program is designed to give you the opportunity to use your leadership knowledge and practice skills in an actual work situation. It also allows you to investigate career opportunities, and learn about your own interests and abilities. An important part of the process is to reflect critically on your experience as the semester progresses. Learning Objectives 1. Students will actively engage in their own learning. Students will participate in career exploration through informational interviewing, observation, and/or special topic research. 2. Students will integrate classroom theory with professional practice. Students will develop skills to increase usefulness and improve performance. 3. Students will appraise and evaluate the complexities inherent in organizations. 4. Students will develop communication and interpersonal skills. 5. Students will gain work experience that will assist them in working toward personal career goals. Requirements of the Course Site supervisor You must have a supervisor in the organization that will be responsible for your activities, monitor your progress, verify completion of required hours, and complete the midterm and final evaluation forms. Within the first two weeks of the semester, you must provide the following to your instructor: your site supervisor's contact information; supervisor's name; organization address and phone number; and your resume. You may not count hours until your application packet has been turned in to your instructor. The Internship packet is available for purchase at the USD Bookstore. Internship meetings Students will meet four times during the spring semester. The meetings will be held on Wednesday January 27th, March 3rd, and April 7th,, and May 14th. A site visit is also required and arranged by the student. Site visits will be held with the instructor, student, and site supervisor and will take place between March 15th and April 15th. Students will complete a minimum of 120 hours at their work site in addition to class meetings.


Evaluation Forms Students will complete a self-evaluation form due at the beginning of class April 7th. Supervisors are required to complete a mid-term evaluation that is due at the beginning of class April 7th. Students are required to turn in a Site Supervisor Evaluation form, hour log, and final evaluation & meeting form that is due at 2pm on May 14th. Critical Incident Outline As part of your internship, you are required to type a one page formal outline about a critical incident and discuss it during one class meeting with a small group due at the beginning of class April 7th. Reflective Summary As part of your internship, you are required to turn in a typed reflective summary (minimum of 5 pages and a maximum of 10 pages) of your experience due at 2pm on May 14th. It is strongly suggested that you keep a daily journal of your experiences to assist you in your personal reflection. Former students have reported that it was very helpful to review their growth over the semester. Final Meeting A final meeting is required between the supervisor and the students. The Final Evaluation form will be discussed at this time and both parties are required to sign that the meeting occurred. due by 2pm on May 14th. Grades are docked one letter grade per day assignment is late.
