Students will examine the skills, reflective strategies, and capacity for innovation needed to collaborate and address social issues. To further explore Leadership and Social Change, this course offers an in-depth look at Hurricane Katrina’s effect on the city of New Orleans, Louisiana through historical, geographical, sociological, and political perspectives. The purpose of this course is to prepare students to travel to New Orleans for a one-week immersion experience to develop relationships with community members and assist with the city’s rebuilding efforts. Throughout the semester, instructors will provide hands-on skill building workshops, promote democratic discussions about the social issues associated with Hurricane Katrina, and facilitate workshops and dialogues in leadership development for civic engagement.
