School of Education Message from the Dean Dear SoE Alumni, Friends, and Colleagues,

horizons

This fall will be a very busy semester in the School of Education (SoE). Our professional education unit is pursuing national accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the formal site visit by the accreditation team is scheduled for late October. We are excited about the significance of this event, and look forward to celebrating a successful process later in the year. Additionally, plans are underway for construction of our new building which will be located on what is now the Copley Library parking lot. The School of Education is launching our lecture series entitled: “Leaders of Practice”. The lecture/discussion series will showcase prominent individuals who have made a significant impact on their discipline or society. As home to the first doctoral program in leadership studies in the nation, it is fitting that the inaugural lecture be given by one of our distinguished alumni from this program: best selling author and corporate consultant Dr. Kevin Freiberg ’87. I hope you will join us November 17 at 6:00pm in the auditorium of the Manchester Conference Center for this wonderful event. I look forward to seeing you on the 17th.

Ability Profiling and School Failure: One Child’s Struggle to be Seen as Competent

By Kathleen M. Collins (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2003) How do sociocultural factors such as ethnicity, gender, class, and language influence the identification of ability and disability? Under what contextual circumstances does a difference become a disability? SoE faculty member Kathleen Collins’ case study of a competent fifth grade African American student in a predominantly white, rural community provides a thoughtful exploration of the social and contextual forces that shape the appearance of academic ability, and the impact of these forces on the perception of academic underachievement of minority students. The book highlights the student’s struggle to be seen as competent in school, a context where his teacher perceives him as learning disabled and excludes him from science and literacy discourses in the classroom. Using ethnographic methods, Collins documents the ways in which well-meaning participants in the school environment construct an identity of disability for a child who excels in other activity contexts.

Broad Foundation funds leadership academy for aspiring and practicing principals Funded by a grant from the Eli Broad Foundation, the Educational Leadership Development Academy (ELDA) was created through a partnership between the San Diego Unified School District and the University of San Diego. Dean of the School of Education Paula Cordeiro and Superintendent Alan Bersin envisioned a program that would address the principal shortage in the district, attract exceptional teachers to the principalship, improve teacher expertise, and raise student achievement. Led by recently retired Executive Director Elaine Fink, the Academy began in January 2000 with a cohort of ten aspiring principals. The Aspiring Principal program provides a year long internship where the student shadows an exemplary principal who coaches the student and models effective instructional leadership practices and decision making.

Since its inception, the Academy has graduated fifty-four students. 87% of the ELDA students have assumed site leadership positions in San Diego Unified. In June 2004, twenty-seven additional students graduated and received the Preliminary Administrative credential, and thirty-four students (who are currently serving in principal or viceprincipal positions) received the Professional Administrative Credential. As the Academy begins its fifth year, we welcome new Executive Director Ann Van Sickle. The district and the University of San Diego look forward to continuing the partnership and the successful training of school leaders who are lifelong learners, who have a strong knowledge of teaching and learning, and who promote the success of all students.
