For alumni and friends of the University of San Diego

Message From the Dean The new semester has begun and the SoE is embracing 2005 as a time of bold change. Let me begin with some highlights from 2004:

horizons

• We have four new faculty: Dr. Lea Hubbard, Learning and Teaching; Dr. Lori Low, Counseling; Dr. Athena Perrakis, Leadership Studies; and Dr. Frank Kemerer, who is Professor in Residence in the Schools of Education and Law. Welcome! • We hosted a joint national (NCATE) and state (CCTC) accreditation team who spent nearly five days carefully reviewing our self-study, interviewing faculty, staff, students and alums, as well as our district partners. If you participated —many thanks!! What a great year 2004 was for us! During 2005 you will hear more about: • Plans for the new building—USD selected the architectural firm— Delawie, Wilkes, Rodriguez and Barker, and our SoE building committee is meeting with them regularly. • Internationalizing the school and increasing our diversity among students and faculty. We will strive to provide more opportunities for international experiences, welcome international scholars and students, and we will increase scholarship funds to expand our diversity and increase the intercultural understanding of faculty and students. The SoE students, faculty and staff wish you a happy and healthy 2005.

Paula A. Cordeiro Dean and Professor

NCATE Update! The NCATE (National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education) visit in late October was a tremendous success! All of the required standards were successfully met, and the feedback we received from the NCATE team was all very positive. The School of Education administrative team would like to thank all of the students, alumni, faculty and staff who contributed to such a successful visit!

Community college research program moves to USD We are pleased to announce the arrival of the Community College Leadership Development Initiatives (CCLDI) at the USD School of Education. The CCLDI is committed to forming dynamic and productive alliances and working collaboratively with all constituencies of community college education in the western region to encourage and promote: • Leadership development activities for current and future leaders, • Research dissemination and coordination, and • Opportunities to share information and access to professional development in community college education.

Forum examines the state of school counseling and school reform

Ofelia Arellano

Dr. Ofelia R. Arellano, former Provost at Southwestern Community College in Chula Vista, CA, is the Interim Executive Director of CCLDI. Dr. Arellano will work closely with faculty at USD and community colleges, as well as community college administrators in the region to bring together the expertise of community college scholars and practitioners through programs designed to prepare leaders for work in community colleges. CCLDI was originally conceived and established by a group of community college leaders who now form the CCLDI Foundation, and is continually informed of community college issues by the on-going collaboration with the Foundation and a policy council made up of Foundation Board members and University of San Diego representatives. Prior to moving to the USD School of Education, the CCLDI was housed at Claremont Graduate University.

Clinic to train teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing joins the SoE with $2 million in grant funding The John Tracy Clinic and the USD School of Education have announced a partnership to train teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This summer the Clinic announced the transfer of two large federal grants from USC to the USD School of Education. Dean Paula Cordeiro and Dr. Judy Mantle were instrumental in establishing the relationship with the Clinic. The John Tracy Clinic is a private, nonprofit education center founded by Louise Treadwell Tracy in 1942, with a mission of offering hope, guidance and encouragement to families of infants and preschool children with hearing losses. The Tracy Clinic offers correspondence

courses which serve 2,500 families each year in 140 countries, and its community hearing screening program reaches 16,000 preschool children per year in Los Angeles and three surrounding counties. Two grants totaling over two million dollars from the U.S. Department of Education have been transferred to USD. The multi-year program will fund stipends to 70 undergraduates and graduates who are preparing to teach young deaf and hard of hearing students. Beginning with the fall 2005 term, the USD School of Education will offer the program instituted by USC and the Tracy Clinic, the nation’s first online Master’s Degree in early childhood deaf education.

The 6th annual forum on the state of school counseling and guidance in schools was a huge success in December 2004. More than 180 counselors, counselor educators, school and community agency administrators and graduate students attended the event held at USD. With the theme of “Blueprints and Bulldozers”, the forum examined the current school reform movement and the practices built on those assumptions. The Forum brings together a community of individuals interested in strengthening the practice of school counseling and the delivery of student support programs and services. This year’s event was sponsored by the USD Center for Student Support Systems, the USD School of Education, and the San Diego Kiwanis Club. 7th Annual Forum on the State of Counseling and Guidance in Schools December 9, 2005 University of San Diego www.sandiego.edu/soe/instcenter/ studentsupp

Dr. Kendra Sisserson, Assistant Professor in the Language, Literacy, and Culture program, recently travelled to Pakistan as a volunteer literacy consultant. Working with the International Reading Association (IRA), a nonprofit professional organization with the goal of advancing global literacy, Dr. Sisserson developed and delivered a professional development program for teachers and administrators. The program, funded in part by the United States Agency for International Development and housed at Aga Khan University in Karachi, was prepared at the request of the government of Pakistan as part of their effort to extend contemporary education, particularly secondary education for girls in the far provinces of Pakistan.

Dr. Edwards conducts research and community outreach in Australia Dr. Todd Edwards, Associate Professor and Director of the Marital and Family Therapy program, was hosted by the University of Melbourne’s Department of General Practice in the School of Medicine for the fall 2004 semester. In addition to giving two presentations on family therapy and the collaboration between physicians and therapists to faculty and community professionals, Dr. Edwards conducted research on the “Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care Initiative”. This government sponsored initiative was implemented to improve the quality of care provided through general practice to Australians with a mental health illness. Funding from the initiative provides mental health assessment training to general practitioners, establishes linkages between general practitioners and mental health professionals, and offers mental health services to patients.

Academy trains school leaders and is a model for principal preparation across the nation The Educational Leadership Development Academy (ELDA), now in its fifth year of preparing and supporting strong school leaders, has recently been awarded a grant of $2.2 million from The Broad Foundation. This new grant is a renewal from the foundation, whose $4.2 million grant helped launch the program in 2000. To date, 75 students have graduated from the Aspiring Leaders program (for the preliminary administrative services credential) and 46 have graduated from the New Leaders: Induction & Support program (for the professional administrative services credential). 91% of these graduates hold administrative positions. Recognizing the many successes of the program, Stanford University has recently

selected the ELDA to participate in their study of exemplary principal preparation programs. After a preliminary examination of preparation programs nationwide, this study, led by Stanford professors Linda Darling-Hammond and Debra Meyerson, has included the University of San Diego’s ELDA as one of the eight programs to be the subject of their in-depth inquiry. The inclusion of the ELDA in this study signifies its growing national reputation as one of the foremost leadership preparation programs. As Dean Paula Cordeiro observes, “It is not only the responsibility of ELDA to afford San Diego educators with exemplary opportunities for school leadership development; we must also share our learning from the Academy work with colleagues in school districts and universities around the nation.”

5th Annual Binational Border Pedagogy Conference to be held at USD The 5th annual Border Pedagogy Conference will be held October 7-8, 2005 at the University of San Diego’s Institute for Peace and Justice. A collaborative effort between the USD School of Education and Universidad IberoAmericana, this event will incorporate educational research and scholars from both sides of the U.S. - Mexico border. Last year’s conference, held at Universidad IberoAmericana in Tijuana, was co-sponsored by USD with 150 participants from the U.S. and Mexico. According to conference Co-Chair Dr. Jaime Romo, Assistant Professor in the SoE Department of Learning and Teaching, “In our increasingly interconnected global society, learning to think differently about ourselves in a border context, making crossings and connections, and articulating a vision of social justice, have become necessary civic skills”. This year’s conference theme – “Bridging Borders That Divide Us: Opening Access to Educational Opportunity” – promises important dialogue about preparing teachers, policy-making, and best practices for binational civic and educational development throughout the borderlands.
