MFT Education: Current Considerations and Future Directions The topic of MFT Education is one that continues to spark controversy among educators and employers alike, as one's education largely contributes to clinical preparedness and therapeutic abilities. Having recently attended the MFT Educators Forum at the 44th Annual CAMFT Conference in L.A., it seems appropriate to share these issues raised by MFT Educators, to promote awareness among USD students and alumni, considering the implications of educational changes and concerns in the field. One widely debated topic involves defining the differences between the MFT and MSW degrees, and the implications for students when entering the job market. Certainly, MFTs and MSWs vary in their orientations, historical roots, and educational requirements (for example, MFT programs are mandated to have courses in psychotherapy, while MSW programs are not1). However, upon graduation, many MFT students find themselves applying for positions advertised for MSWs, as the number of employment opportunities geared towards MFTs is slightly more limited. Once in these positions, MFTs often gain extensive experience in conducting case management, accessing community resources, and providing referrals, thus expanding their skill sets while on the job. Conversely, some organizations will only hire MSWs, in part due to misunderstandings about the scope of practice for MFTs, and political restrictions that protect this job sector for other mental health professionals2. Thus, MFT educators are dialoguing about ways

to improve the hirability of MFTs, such as encouraging the training of students to practice therapy in non-traditional settings. Also, some educators are passionate about teaching students to assess multiple systems outside of the family, and to consider the advantages and disadvantages of these larger systems when conducting family therapy, a skill that is vital in many therapeutic settings. For others, the question remains - when will we realize that we are all trying to do something similar? While we may bring different ideas and strengths to the field, based upon our particular education, serving mental health needs and promoting healthy relationships and families are, typically, core values for both MFTs and MSWs. Additionally, MFT educators are dialoguing about the decline in number of therapists willing to supervise interns and trainees, and the impact this may have for future students. Considering the liability involved for supervisors, there is a need for finding additional ways to further educate supervisors and protect their vulnerabilities. For psychologists and psychiatrists, who are not required to take courses in supervision, this is especially critical. The supervisory experience enables students to effectively apply one's educational to clinical work, enhancing young therapists' capacities for making sound ethical, legal, and therapeutic decisions. Therefore, the number and quality of supervisors is critical to the credibility and expansion of the field. Lastly, in terms of technical changes, the forum members dialogued about the proposed changes to the MFT Licensing

"...it is im per a t iv e t hat t herapis t s rem ain aware of t he cont roversies a nd considerat ions relat ed t o M F T Educat ion, as s uch changes deďŹ n e t he f ut ure of t he prof ession." Requirements, which would take effect in 2012. Such changes would include an increase in degree unit requirements, from 48 to 60 semester units, as well as requirements for educating students in topics such as case management, collaborative treatment, and trauma response. A detailed account of these changes can be found on the BBS Website (bbs.ca.gov). Certainly, graduation marks a transition out of the educational realm, and into clinical practice. However, it is imperative that therapists remain aware of the controversies and considerations related to MFT Education, as such changes define the future of the profession. -Brandina Morrison, M.A., USD MFT Program Specialist and MFT Program Newsletter Designer 1 "Marriage and Family Therapy: A Unique Healing Art."
