Welcome all new and returning SOLES Graduate Students! The SGSA Team and I will be working hard this year to provide you with various opportunities to network, develop your professional skills, and most importantly to have fun throughout your time here. In addition, our goals are to collaborate with other graduate schools and to increase our visibility on the greater USD Campus. As a fairly new organization, we are always looking for fresh ideas and the best way to serve SOLES Graduate Students. We welcome you to attend a meeting and encourage you to get involved in one of our committees. One of the aspects I personally love most about SOLES is that as students we are surrounded with valuable resources and an extremely supportive community. Thus, I hope that SGSA will be a part of making your experience here at SOLES memorable. I wish all of you a good academic year and look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events! Student Highlight Name: Lindsey McDougle Program: PhD, Leadership Studies Concentration: Nonprofit and Philanthropic Studies Year: 4th Hometown: Dayton, Ohio Undergraduate: The Ohio State University, Natural Resources Policy Graduate: Duke University, Environmental Management About: I am currently in the dissertation stage of my degree program. I work as a doctoral research assistant at the Caster Family Center for Nonprofit Research. During my time at USD, I have had the opportunity to serve on several committees and become involved in a number of different organizations. To name a few, I have served as the SGSA Doctoral Student Representative, a representative on the university-wide Graduate Student Council, a member of the Graduate and Law Student Task Force, and a member of the university's Sustainability Committee. Most recently I have organized a new doctoral student organization (Doctoral Student Discussion Group (DSDG)) where doctoral students in SOLES and the Hahn School of Nursing meet every other month to discuss research and other areas of interest. One thing I like about SOLES: The opportunity that students have to get involved, voice an opinion, and actually make a difference is something that you don't find in many universities. Fortunately, though, SOLES provides many outlets for students to take on any number of leadership roles and actually make a difference not only in SOLES... but at USD.

GLOBAL CITIZENS: Mondragon, Spain As experienced by Laura Shepard, M.A 2010 Higher Education Leadership For the next few days we got down to business and learned about a successful cooperative business model that is barely 50 years in the making. The Mondragon Corporacion Cooperativa was established under the vision and leadership of a young priest named Don Jose Maria Arizmendiarrieta, and five equally-young and passionate engineers who wanted nothing more than to help their community by creating jobs and opportunities for integrity. The cooperative model emerged as a thriving option for the people of Mondragon during a time when employment was high, and morale was lower than ever. Ideals such as solidarity, unity and a strong work ethic are the foundations of the Mondragon cooperatives as derived from the values of the Basque country.
Professor David Herrera has been bringing USD graduate students to the Basque region of Spain for over a decade to teach a course on 'Models of Participatory Leadership". With a course experience that includes immersed cultural visits, a brief history of the Basque Country, opportunities for local travel, and an introduction to the cooperative model of business - there is definitely something for everyone. When you first arrive to the small town of Mondragon (or as the locals call it “Arrasate”), you will likely be unimpressed. With its brick and mortar high-rise buildings and industrial atmosphere you’re not sure what to expect from this secluded town surrounded by towering mountains. Balconies are covered with hanging laundry, and all seems quiet and quaint. Once 2pm rolls around (and siesta begins) your impression will be enlightened. The crowds slowly fill the wide walk ways and open courtyards. The parks come to life with children playing and laughing. Elderly men and women stroll around town and find comfort on park benches to catch up on local gossip...and especially to chat about the presence of approximately 20 USD students and faculty who have just arrived in town.
Over the remainder of the course USD students and faculty reflected on ways that they could begin creating more cooperative work environments in their own organizations. As a graduate student who has yet to manage a workplace, my first step to create more cooperation is through a personal commitment to transparency. To keep everyone included in conversations and ideas that are 3

cont. from p.3 emerging, and practice an “open-door” policy that allows for the open expression of ideas and opinions. Mondragon was an experience that I would never have gotten within the borders of the United States. It was a refreshing insight into a practical business model that values inclusive and democratic decisionmaking and innovative ideas. I encourage anyone to take a glimpse at an alternate reality that is equally valid, but still so rare in our competitive and top-down decision-making world.

Interfaith Shelter Network: Once each semester University Ministry takes responsibility for staffing the Interfaith Shelter Network, a rotational shelter program serving homeless women, men, and children in San Diego County. Spend time preparing, serving, and sharing meals, playing with children, and learning about the lives of those who are homeless. University Ministry will staff the shelter on November 1-7. USD Writing Center: USD's Writing Center is a gem for graduate students. Located in Founders Hall, the Writing Center is a place where all USD students can get assistance in developing and writing papers. The tutors in the Writing Center are recommended by professors and then go through a rigorous training, making them extremely capable of handling a wide range of subjects, topics, and writing styles. Tutors are available from a variety of disciplines, so you are likely to find someone who can not only help you perfect the style of your paper, but also someone who is also familiar with the subject. These students are passionate about writing, often in the thick of writing themselves. They are proficient in MLA, APA, and Chicago style. The Writing Center aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to be self-sufficient in the future, but welcome all to come back and use them as needed. They collaborate with you, the writer, and focus on what you identify as your need and what they see needs strengthening. The Writing Center tutors are also able to help English Language Learners with the basic rules of English grammar and help them to articulate themselves appropriately in English. And best of all: the services are all FREE! Tutors are available on an appointment basis, Monday-Thursday 9am-7pm (closed from 1-2pm) and Fridays 9am-2pm. The Women’s Center Safe Space Allies Training: By displaying a SAFE SPACE emblem in your working and/ or living areas, you provide a visible marker of validation, support, and respect for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community as well as other potentially marginalized populations. The sign serves as an indicator of people with whom LGBT and questioning people can speak openly and seek the support they need to succeed at the University of San Diego.
