Level I Education Specialist Credential: Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Master of Education in Special Education Program Overview The John Tracy Clinic and the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) have partnered to create a 44-unit program offering a California Education Specialist Credential in Deaf and Hard of Hearing and a Master of Education in Special Education. The program is designed for graduate students and intern teachers who want to specialize in Auditory-Oral and Auditory-Verbal education as spoken language options for children with hearing loss. The program’s values, vision and mission are captured in the acronym PERL. The John Tracy Clinic and University of San Diego’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program prepares Teacher-Leaders who demonstrate: • Passion for providing hope, guidance and encouragement to children with hearing loss and their families; • Excellence in the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they bring to their profession; • Respect for the children, families, and colleagues with whom they work, and • Leadership in providing the vision, direction, and motivation for positive change in schools. Two program options are available to qualified candidates, including the Onsite Program, which lasts 10 months, and the Distance Learning Program, which is a two-year internship. All Onsite classes take place at the John Tracy Clinic campus in Los Angeles. Distance Learning candidates take most of their classes online, while other classes are conducted at the John Tracy Clinic during two one-month summer residencies.
