Student Affairs Graduate Assistantship Program

Exciting opportunities are available for paid graduate assistantships in the Department of Student Affairs at the University of San Diego. Students Affairs staff and faculty from the Higher Education Leadership Program in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences have teamed up to provide graduate students with applied learning opportunities. Students in the Higher Education Leadership Program who are interested in working in Student Affairs can interview for a variety of positions within the department. Those who are selected will participate in an integrated program that includes the development of an individualized learning and leadership plan, weekly graduate seminar, rigorous coursework, and many professional development

opportunities within Student Affairs. Examples of professional development and applied learning opportunities include: • Program coordination and management • Direct advising of students • Training/teaching experience in student affairs • University committee service • Research and assessment • Participation in training • International learning opportunities

General Purpose The following positions, along with coursework from the Higher Education Leadership Program in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences, will provide students with the skills and knowledge to prepare for careers in higher education and student affairs administration. These opportunities for direct work experience, along with mentoring for both personal and professional development, help shape graduate assistants into seasoned professionals.

Examples of Graduate Assistant Positions Community Service-Learning (CSL) / Center for Awareness, Service, and Action (CASA): Assist the Associate Director for the Center for Community Service-Learning and advise students that oversee community-based projects. Facilitate a one-unit leadership course and assist with a leadershipthrough-service program. Diversity and Inclusion Programming: Coordinate the logistics for the United Front Multicultural Center Leadership Council, Rainbow Educators Program (REP), Hate Crimes Initiatives (HCI) workshops and facilitator trainings. Also, assist with general office duties, such as answering and routing calls. Greek Life: Advise and facilitate the personal development of assigned individual student leaders. Meet with individual student officers, assist with committee development, and coordinate and assess all Greek Life events.


Student Activities: Advise and facilitate the personal development of assigned Associated Students and Board members. Meet with individual student directors, assist with committee development, meet with the committees, advise and attend all events planned by the directors. Complete general student activities projects and assist with weekend programming. Duties are flexible according to the experience, skills, interest, and academic schedule of the Graduate Assistant. Student Learning Initiatives: Coordinate ongoing programs and assist with developing new initiatives to promote student success and retention, primarily for first-year students, including FRESH @ USD Program, FYE Online Resources, and Peer Advising Program. Conduct individual academic assistance planning meetings with students on academic probation. Student Life: Manage the Freshman Emerging Leader Program - contact presenters, produce workbook, and order materials. Assist with group facilitation; manage the Annual Leadership Breakfast; serve on various committees; conduct research on issues related to Student Affairs and university initiatives. Student Organizations: Develop programs and serve as a resource to undergraduate student organizations. Advise and facilitate the personal development of assigned individuals on the Associated Students Leadership team. Meet with individual students, assist with committee development, advise and attend all events planned by those students and develop appropriate publications. Work with special Greek-related programming and organizations as assigned. Torero Days: Serve as a member of the Torero Days Board. Serve as an adviser, plan programs, calculate statistics on various surveys regarding student activities and new Torero Days, maintain files and coordinate Torero Squad selection data. Program, also referred to as Torero Days, is a comprehensive program committed to the overall development of new freshmen and transfer students. Women’s Center: Plan and supervise events and educational outreach opportunities for the campus community addressing women’s issues. Work with the Director of the Women’s Center to increase awareness, action, and support for women on campus. Flexibility will be critical as the Diversity, Inclusion, and Globalization Center is developed and fully implemented. Resident Fellows: Reside, lead and participate as a member of the Manchester Village learning community focused on the transition to the “real world”. Uphold, model and live by established community standards. Work in conjunction with the Resident Faculty, Resident Ministers and desk staff. Facilitate resident check-in and check-out and participate in community and floor socials. Collect damage forms and create bulletin boards. Compensation: room and board.

Compensation • An hourly wage of $10.40 for 20 hours a week for up to 48 weeks • Up to $5,000 per semester tuition scholarship One year appointment with the possibility of re-appointment.
