Nonprofit Leadership & Management (NLM) Program New Science for the Nonprofit Sector


Benefits For Students: 50% tuition discount is provided by USD for all students employed by 501 (c) (3) organizations & additional $5,000 scholarship Total Cost of the Degree = $13,000

For Nonprofit Organizations & Community: Teaches professionals how to create high performance organizations. Each student completes approximately 10 work products estimated value of $50,000


A Product of the San Diego Nonprofit Community • Designed from interviews & surveys of nonprofit leaders in San Diego County • Built-in practice component where students immediately apply what they learn in the classroom • Practitioner faculty & top academicians • Launched in Fall 2002


NLM Program Master’s of Arts Degree – 36 units

• Resource Development • Community Organizing & Change • Board Management and Leadership • Legal Issues for Nonprofit Corporations • Human Relations for Leaders • Strategic Planning and Positioning


Electives • Advocacy Skills and Strategies • Collaboration • Capital & Endowment Campaign Planning • Public Speaking

• Risk Management • Related Business Development • Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations


A Balance Between Work, School & Family • 75% of Students Work & Go to School Full Time • Length of Program –Full time: 2 academic years (7-8 units/semester) –Part time: 3 to 4 years (set your own pace) • Class Time –Typically 6-9pm during weekday evenings –Small number of weekend classes


Student Profile • Mid to senior level managers in nonprofit organizations • Reflect racial, ethnic & religious diversity of San Diego • Work in nonprofit fields from human services, environment, healthcare, arts, etc. • Students age 24-40+

Approximately 25 students are accepted each year

Deadline for fall 2009 admission – April 6, 2009 • Minimum GPA: 3.0 on 4.0 scale • Standardized Admission Tests: not required unless GPA falls below benchmark

• 3 Letters of Recommendation • 500-word Essay • Memorandum of understanding signed by employer
