Used Boat Watch
Letter from the Editor
A BoatUS Membership Publication
Dear Boating Enthusiast: Welcome to the premier issue of Used Boat Watch, a completely new digital magazine devoted to following the fast-moving market for pre-owned powerboats. This is a unique publication in the boating world, more akin to a monthly buyer’s guide than a traditional boating magazine with it’s emphasis on in-depth boat reviews and feelgood cruising articles. With the world in recession and the sale of new boats at an all-time low, it’s clear to us that the market for late-model used boats will represent an ever greater share of boat sales activity for at least the next few years. This magazine will address that new reality with dependable information designed to assist buyers and sellers of pre-owned powerboats. In the process, we hope to provide all boating enthusiasts with a magazine whose content is both timely and interesting.

MARKET OUTLOOK | ED McKNEW
A RAY OF SUNSHINE FOR BOATERS: FUEL PRICES ARE DROPPING Housing is still a big drag, but recent price declines in the used-boat market have stimulated an uptick in boat sales this fall in several key markets. No one is breaking out the champagne, of course, but a little good news goes a long way with dealers and brokers who have seen business dry up in recent months. Still, the omens for the immediate future remain cloudy, retarding the prospects for any near-term recovery in new-boat sales. For the moment, the used-boat market is where
the action is and it’s likely to stay that way through most of 2009. No surprise, then, that many dealers are beefing up their brokerage and service operations. While last quarter’s plunge in consumer spending was staggering, falling oil prices have been a source of at least some encouragement. Oil is now less than half its $145-per-barrel peak in July, knocking more than $2 off the price of fuel at the dock. Look for further drops during the winter as world demand continues to drop and the US dollar strengthens against faltering European and Asian currencies. Falling oil prices and declining usedboat values will help stimulate a sales recovery in the long run, but the shortterm picture remains grim for most of the boating industry. Losses in jobs and tight credit will continue to depress business at the dealer level throughout 2009. Longer term, if the economy does show signs of improvement in 2010, most of the growth in household income will most likely to go to savings, leaving less room for growth in recreational spending. Bottom line—for those with cash, this is a great time to be in the market for a new or used boat. 5
Selling your boat in a down market
G
iven the economic turbulence we’re experiencing these days, it’s hardly surprising that so many boat owners have decided to sell their boats as a way of cutting household expenses. Regardless of location, the pipeline of used boats for sale— especially trailerable boats under 27 feet—is as full as it’s been in many years. With fewer buyers than normal (and with loans more difficult to secure) this is indeed a true “buyer’s market.” Still, if you’re one of those with a boat to sell and you prefer not to wait until the market turns around, there are several steps you can take to get the job done without taking a financial bath in the process. That’s not to say you’ll necessarily get your asking price, but you can get the best price the market will bear and walk away feeling satisfied that you
haven’t left too much on the table. In this depressed market, that should be enough. That said, here are a few common-sense steps you can take to get top dollar for your boat in a down market. Make your boat look new Hard as this is to believe, well over half of the boats on the market at any given time are still packed of the owner’s personal gear—clothing, galley utensils, food, beer, fishing tackle, rods, even dirty sheets and towels. The trash receptacles are full, the head smells bad, the bilge looks like a storm sewer, the cockpit is full of leaves, and the boat hasn’t been washed for months. So Rule Number 1 is: Clean the boat if you expect anyone to fall in love with it. Empty out the lockers, sani-

tize the head, repair leaks, remove stains, scrub the bilge, wash the deck, polish the stainless, and wax the hull. If you have any teak trim, clean and oil it. If the canvass is shot, either repair it, replace it, or remove it entirely. Make sure the engine starts on the first turn, the engine oil is fresh, the battery charged, and the electronics are in working order. The goal is to put the boat in turn-key, ready-tolaunch condition for a perspective buyer. A clean boat with everything in working order will give any buyer confidence that yours is a boat that has been on the receiving end of above-average care and attention. Normal wear-and-tear aside, that’s the kind of used boat we’re all looking to buy.
same procedure for the trailer and, if necessary, the outboard motor. Add it all up and use that number as the starting point. With that figure in mind, you’ll then need to look at a few of the more popular online classified sites to find out how many of the same (or similar) boats are for sale in your locality. Read the listing carefully and note the equipment, especially the engine. How do these boats compare to your own? Look at the asking price, deduct 10% to 15%, and you’ll have a reasonable estimate of what that boat will probably sell for on average. The more research you do on these classified sites, the better idea you’ll have of what you can expect to get for your boat. The classified sites you should visit are:
Know the local market You might have a good idea of what your used boat is really worth, but then again you might not. If you determine an asking price based on what you still owe on the loan you took out a few years ago when you purchased the boat, you might be surprised to find that you owe more than the boat is currently worth. That’s a real possibility if you put zero or maybe 10% down when you took out the loan—always a bad mistake. Like the homeowners we’ve been reading about who are upside down with their mortgage, you’ll have to dig into your saving account in order to sell your boat.

Get the real market value of your boat before getting started.
A big decision If you’re selling a smaller boat—under 26 or 27 feet, for example—and if you have the time and patience required to show your boat to many perspective buyers, it’s to your advantage to market and sell the boat yourself rather than paying a dealer or broker to get the job done. That means you’ll have to run an ad in the local paper every weekend as well as listing it on at least two of the online classified sites featured above. (Note that Yachtworld. com only accepts listings from brokers and dealers.) The worst part about selling yourself Click to continue…

With their spacious open-bow deck plan, party-time amenities, and dependable sterndrive power, bowriders have become the ultimate family day boat. Once confined to small lakes and bays, today’s big bowriders can range well offshore in comfort and security.

or many families, the decision to buy a new or used trailerable boat from 20 to 24 feet presents several conflicting desires. Dad wants a capable fishing platform with tackle storage and a fishbox; mom wants comfortable seats and space for a cooler, and kids want a boat for skiing or wakeboarding. Obviously, no single boat can satisfy all these demands to perfection. But among the possibilities, the dual console combines the features anglers require in a capable fishing boat with the familyfriendly comforts of a good dayboat. Built by many big-name manufacturers, dual consoles have been a popular staple in the boating market for many years thanks to their built-in versatility and relatively low maintenance requirements. More than that, however, dual consoles are fun to drive, inexpensive to operate, and nearly always easy to sell. The Best of Both Worlds Dual console boats are best described as outboard-powered, open-bow designs with port and starboard consoles, a reasonably spacious cockpit, and a walkthrough windshield. They are often confused with bowriders since both have the same open-bow layout and sporty profile. Bowriders, however, are mostly sterndrive-powered and they lack the fishing amenities common to a dual console model. Indeed, it’s the ability of dual-console designs to deliver an array of fishing features that makes these boats so popular with anglers. Aside from rod storage, rod holders, and an insulated fishbox or two, a well-equipped dual console might also include such bigger-boat features as a circulating livewell, lockable electronics
storage, tackle center, and perhaps even a removable transom seat. Those are the kind of features that warm the heart of any serious fisherman, but it’s important to note that a well-designed dual console also boasts the seating and storage capacity to accommodate the whole family. Many are fitted with fold-down sleeper seats for sunbathing, and a transom door makes swimming and diving a breeze. 44
Versatility Rules Dual Consoles are the SUVs of the boating world
Equally important, a tall windshield offers good high-speed wind protection, and the deep cockpit of many dual consoles provides a measure of child security important in any small boat. Note that larger dual-console models (generally over 22 feet in length) often include a small head compartment in the passenger-side console—a genuine plus for everyone aboard.
It’s All About Performance
With their outboard power, dual-console boats are quick to accelerate (think skiing or wakeboarding), generally fuel-efficient, and very maneuverable at low speeds. Smaller dual consoles in the 18–20 range do well with a 150 hp or 175hp engine reaching a top speed in the neighborhood Click here to continue… 45

It’s no secret that trawlers are hot these days—where else can boaters combine luxury, secutity and fuel economy in the same boat? Yes, trawlers go slower than motoryachts and cruisers but most boomers are happy to forego speed for range and frugality. Here are 17 popular aft cabin trawlers whose virtues will always be in style. The values assigned each boat are estimates only—asking prices are nearly always higher. Add 10% for unusually well-equipped boats or those with low hours. Add 10–15% for freshwater boats, and deduct 10–20% for boats in poor or neglected condition.

Your dealer should be able to give you a standard sales contract which you can modify for your own use, or you can Google “boat sales agreement” or “boat purchase contract” and find several useful examples. The important thing is to have a contract available as soon as you begin marketing your boat. Otherwise, you may find yourself unable to accept a deposit from a buyer who won’t do business with a simple handshake.
is making the boat available at all times for showing, weekends included. So if you plan to continue using the boat while you have it up for sale, you might as well accept the fact that you’ll definitely miss some buyers while you’re out fishing or cruising. It also means that you’ll spend a lot of time cleaning and polishing after each use. Fact is, those who are really serious about selling themselves will keep the boat clean and ready to show at all times. That means keeping it in the driveway and not at the launch ramp. On the other hand, if you can’t resist using the boat on a nice day—and if selling really is a priority—then you’d best hitch it up and take it on down to your local dealer where it’s out of sight. He’ll charge a sales commis-

Multi-fuel Outboards The military have long demanded that their outboard motors be able to run on a variety of fuels, and now ordinary boaters could be following suite. The Common Fuels Initiative (CFI) is a government mandate requiring all internal combustion engines to run on a variety of fuels by 2010. Evinrude will soon make some multi-fuel engines available to the general public. These engines can run on several paraffin-based fuels, as well as gas. Evinrude MFE outboards are capable of running on kerosene, aviation fuels, and standard gasoline. These fuels are available from commercial sources worldwide. The engine's fuel selection can be changed with the simple flip of a switch, without compromising performance.
Evinrude’s new 55MFE outboard can run on kerosene, aviation fuel, or standard gasoline.
From sea to street The Garmin Nuvi 550 is a waterproof multi-mode GPS navigator designed for use in the car, in the boat, on a cycle or on foot. It provides spoken directions via internal speaker and can accept maps using it's MicroSD card slot as well as already coming preloaded with detailed street maps for North America and Europe. Also preloaded are millions of points of interest (POI's) but you can upload your own, and you can upload geo-tagged photos. While the 550 isn’t an alternative to a dedicated plotter for serious cruising, it can be a handy backup for those who trail a small boat to the water. About $379. 77

for in a dual console and opinions vary when it comes to the meaning of value. That said, it’s fair to suggest brands like Pro-Line, Century, Mako, Seaswirl, and McKee Craft if you’re looking for a balance between quality and price. If quality ranks foremost and cost is secondary, look to Boston Whaler, Grady-White, Edgewater, Hydra-Sports and Scout. And if affordability is the primary concern, look for a new or used Angler or Dusky. It’s hard to go wrong on any of these brands since they’ve been around for years and all have loyal customer followings. Lastly, when the time comes to sell your dual console it’s nice to know that their versatile nature makes them popular with a wide cross-section of the boating public.
of 40 mph. Those is the 20- to 22-foot range will most likely be powered with a 200hp outboard, and 23- to 25-foot models will require engines from 225hp–250hp to hit to speeds of 40-plus mph. Needless to say, the top speed of any boat will depend on weight (passengers, fuel load, equipment, etc) and sea conditions, and it’s always best to consult a local dealer for his recommendations regarding the right engine selection. When it comes to used models, however, the above power suggestions serve as a useful rule of thumb. A Final Word Like everything else, you get what you pay
