124TH COMMENCEMENT CONVOCATION SUMMER
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA TAMPA
PETERSBURG
SARASOTA-MANATEE

Dear Graduates,

On behalf of our trustees, faculty, staff, and hundreds of thousands of global alumni, please accept my congratulations on earning your degree.

This is a momentous occasion, not just for you, but for those who have helped you reach this milestone. Your family and friends and the USF community of faculty, staff and students all celebrate your success today.

Your achievement this year is even more meaningful because of the unforeseen challenges that have affected our university and our communities since early 2020.

The pandemic and its resulting impacts altered your academic journey in unforgettable ways. You transitioned from in-person classes to online instruction; you found new ways to maintain important connections with your professors and classmates; and you helped create new ways to honor USF traditions like Homecoming and Week of Welcome in a virtual environment.

Throughout this journey, you have shown how to confront these challenges – and many others – with courage and perseverance, qualities that will serve you well as you enter the next chapter in your lives. Like our university, you have been driven by bold ambitions and an optimistic vision of what’s possible.

Importantly, you’ve done so by modeling USF’s Principles of Community, which unite us as One USF with a commitment to helping create a future that reflects justice, opportunity and meaningful participation by all of its members.

Like you, I got my start at USF, earning my degree in management. I credit much of my personal and professional success to the impact USF has had on my life. The lessons you have learned will continue to shape who you are and empower you to make a positive difference for society. I can’t wait to see what you achieve.

Congratulations!

PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY

We the students, alumni, faculty, staff, and administrators of the University of South Florida unite as a community to propel the success of “One USF.” We celebrate our accomplishments and respect our complex differences. We commit ourselves to shaping the future in a community that cherishes justice, accessibility, and meaningful participation by all of its members. USF starts with US. In this spirit, we state the following Principles of Community.

EXCELLENCE WITH EQUITY

We affirm the value of excellence. Our essential pursuit of truth and wisdom depends upon fairness and equity. We recognize that individual and collective excellence entails a responsibility to ensure that every member of our community has the opportunity to succeed.

DIVERSITY WITH INCLUSION

We affirm the value of diversity, individual dignity, equity, and our common humanity. Diversity of lived experiences, thought, and values enriches our lives and our whole university community. We seek the intentional inclusion of the broadest possible range of these perspectives essential to a university with local, state, national, and global impact.

FREEDOM WITH RESPONSIBILITY

We affirm the value of academic freedom and the inherent value of people’s right to express themselves respectfully, freely, safely, and with civility. We reject the demeaning acts of bullying, violence, prejudice, and discrimination as they undermine the community we aspire to be.

DIALOGUE WITH RESPECT

We affirm the value of evidence and seek perspectives to foster productive communication, dialogue, and constructive disagreement. We listen respectfully and reject language that demeans any member of the community. We embrace differences by learning through open debate in a spirit of curiosity.

TRANSPARENCY WITH ACCOUNTABILITY

We affirm the value of a clear and transparent working and learning environment that promotes honesty, fairness, and trust. We commit our time, talents, and resources to building a culture of caring that promotes the integrity of our relationships and the sustainable well-being of the entire community. We are personally responsible, across every level, for treating each other with respect, candor, and accountability.

The USF Principles of Community were adopted on March 24, 2020, after an extensive survey and meeting period began by USF President Steven C. Currall in December 2019. President Currall created the Principles of Community Task Force to develop essential aspirational principles collaboratively and with input from students, alumni, faculty, staff and administrators. Meetings to which all in the university community were invited were held on all three USF campuses, and surveys created by the USF task force were sent to all constituents, gathering data from December 2019 to February 2020. Learn more about the Principles of Community at usf.edu/president/principles-of-community/index.aspx

THE SYMBOLS OF LEARNING

Modern academic regalia evolved from the kinds of apparel worn by monks and students in the 11th and 12th centuries to keep warm in the medieval castles and halls in which they studied. Academic life as we know it today began in the Middle Ages — first in the church, then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, and the Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master. Their dress was the outward sign of stature and responsibility. Academic regalia was thus a visible manifestation — in color, pattern and design — that unified those of common discipline and like purpose. In later centuries, to preserve the regalia’s dignity and meaning, universities set rules of academic dress. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895, establishing a code of approved attire. In 1932, the American Council on Education revised this code, which, for the most part, governs the style of academic dress today. The principal features of academic dress are three: the gown, the cap and the hood.

THE GOWN — The gown has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it completely covers any dress of rank or social standing. The sleeves of the gown indicate the level of the degree held by the wearer. A long, pointed sleeve indicates the bachelor’s degree. The master’s gown has an oblong sleeve cut in an arc, with a slit at either the upper arm or wrist. The USF doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves and three black bars on the sleeve. The doctoral robe also has the seal of the university on the velvet facing.

THE CAP — The freed slave in ancient Rome won the privilege of wearing a cap, and so the academic cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as a square symbolizing the book, although other authorities claim that it is a mortar board, the symbol of the masons, a privileged guild. The color of the tassel on the cap denotes the discipline. The tassels on the caps (mortar boards) worn by the faculty may be black or a color indicating the degree. Those who hold a doctoral degree may wear a gold tassel. It is traditional for degree candidates to wear their tassels on the right and for those holding degrees to wear them on the left. Graduates transfer their tassels to the left after conferring of the degrees by the President.

THE MACE — The USF mace is a ceremonial staff similar to those used by many institutions of higher learning to show the right to grant degrees to graduates. The mace is used during all Commencement ceremonies and is carried by the President of the Faculty Senate. Our mace includes a gold pine cone at its top to represent growth and continuity. Eight silver semicircles, which support the pine cone, stand for the eight colleges in existence at USF when the mace was commissioned in 1998. When not in use, today’s mace is displayed in the foyer of the President’s office. The original university mace is on display in the Alumni Center.

THE MEDALLION — The medallion worn by candidates for the bachelor’s degree identify those graduating with honors based upon GPA.

THE SASH — The golden-colored sash is made available to students who are members of university honors societies. The sash is embroidered with the university seal and the student’s

honors society. International students may choose to wear a special sash honoring their home country. The colors of their sash reflect the colors of their native flags.

THE HOOD — The hoods are lined with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. They are edged and bound with velvet of the color appropriate for the degree. At USF, the lining of the hood is green with a gold chevron, representing the university’s colors.

THE COLORS — In regalia, academic disciplines are noted by color. These colors can be found on undergraduate and masters tassels and on master and doctorate hoods on the velvet edging.

JESSICA SENATUS OUTSTANDING GRADUATE

The Outstanding Graduate Award, given by the Office of the Provost and the division of Student Success, recognizes a graduating senior who embodies leadership, school spirit, community service, character, and scholarship. The Summer 2021 award goes to Jessica Senatus, who this semester will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Analytics and Information Systems from the Muma College of Business.

Jessica describes herself as recipient of the American Dream: her family worked hard and made sacrifices so they could move to the United States and provide a better future for generations to come. Jessica has not taken these sacrifices lightly and she embodies the same hard work, grit and determination that her family had and uses these characteristics to give back to others.

Jessica served her peers in the Muma College of Business as their Student Government senator, with committee assignments on Finance, Policy, Activity and Service Fee Recommendation and the consolidation of USF’s three campuses. Additionally, Jessica served in 2020 as the first Tampa campus deputy financial officer under the university’s first consolidated Student Government following consolidation. Jessica’s service did not stop with Student Government, she also, held other positions working in the Office of Admissions and the Collier Student Success Center. Her final, and current position, with the university has been with Cyber Florida as a cloud security analyst.

Beyond her professional duties as a working Bull, Jessica also made time for her academic endeavors. She is a member of the Business Honors Program, where she volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, Corporate Mentorship Program and the Order of the Golden Brahman. In recognition of all of her accomplishments, Jessica was recognized as a 2020 Muma College of Business 25 Under 25 honoree, a recipient of the 2020 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, and in 2021 she received Student Government’s Outstanding Senior Leadership Award and the Golden Bull.

To cap all of her achievements, Jessica is also a Summer 2021 King O’Neal Scholar, recognizing her 4.0 grade point average during her time as an undergraduate student. After graduation, Jessica will work full-time with KPMG, one of the world’s Big Four accounting firms, as a cyber security defense advisory associate.
