YOU! This is your moment

NOW

The things that make you different, and the passions we share together, create a campus energy that is unique to each incoming class. Our Franciscan tradition calls on all of us to listen and value everyone’s ideas and opinions. By encouraging a trustful, prayerful community of learners we’ve created an environment where deeper and more meaningful conversations come easy. We know the one-on-one interactions you have with your professors benefit us both. If you want an environment that will inspire you through faith and reason, and a place that feels like home, that’s us.

Does this sound like you? Our sought-after graduates are progressive. They’re engaged and often entrepreneurs who make a difference in their communities. They’re the kind of people who continue to learn and serve others long after they graduate. If this sounds like you, the University of Saint Francis is the perfect place to be. While you’re at USF, you’ll gain the skills you need to positively impact the world. Our approach to education isn’t just about learning the steps in a process. Our approach to education is deeper than that. It’s about understanding how your life affects other people, and knowing how to share your education with them. Remember—college isn’t just about the next four years. While you’re here, we’ll support you as you build the skills you’ll need to begin the rest of your life. This is your moment.

We are mission driven. Rooted in the Catholic and Franciscan traditions of Faith and Reason, the University of Saint Francis engages a diverse community in learning, leadership and service.

38 CLUBS Student life is the heart and soul of your college experience. We want you to make new friends who love the things you love. Really like movies? Join Film Club. Want to have an impact on a global scale? Volunteer for a mission trip. Want to meet people in your major and gain professional experience at the same time? There’s a club for that, too. Outside the classroom—that’s where your friends and memories are made.

Ultimate Road Trip. It’s a true weekend-long adventure. We pull a destination out of a hat, and drive. There’s no plan. There’s no agenda. It’s just about getting off campus, going somewhere new, and making friends. If you really want to explore New York City (it’s a favorite—we’ve gone twice) or go hiking in the Appalachians, let us know. You come up with the destinations we put into the hat.

EXPLORE Make friends. Break barriers. Do the unexpected. Connect with the community. Foster peace and justice.

Values in Action: Serve one another, society and the Church. Every year, our student-led “Formula for Life” raises money to buy food and baby formula for orphans in Haiti. In 2013, they raised $75,000 and sent student volunteers to begin construction of a new orphanage. Our students barely packed anything. They wanted more room in their bags to bring extra supplies for the orphanage. That’s commitment.

Res life is great. USF offers three options for living on campus: traditional rooms, suites and apartments. You have the opportunity to live in any one you want. (Ask around. That’s not very common.) Our halls all have kitchenettes, rec areas, computer lounges, and study rooms. Every room has its own temperature control, wi-fi and movable/stackable furniture. It’s your space, and we want you to enjoy it.

Ultimate Road Trip. See facing page for details. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. campus, or somewhere in the bustling city of Fort Wayne, you’ve got a place here and we want you to be comfortable. If you’re the kind of person who likes the community of a noisy coffee shop, we have Cyber Fresh Café. If you need a quiet place to study, you should check out the library. Tucked in between the piles of medical journals and reference books, there are private study areas to slip away with your laptop and do homework.

“I have met so many friends just from going to games, talking to people within my program, and through activities. I once won $40 worth of gift cards just at Commuter Bingo. Being a commuter doesn’t exclude you from anything. Also, commuters get a lot of free food, and who doesn’t love free food?!”

You don’t have to be on the field to be part of the team. Our student section calls itself the USF Hooligans. They’re the best, and there’s room for one more! All regular-season events are free once you have your USF ID.

You get points for working out in our oncampus fitness center, running, and eating healthy. If you get the most points, you win the most prizes!

Food made by our very own on-campus chef is offered to make sure you have a variety of delicious choices at breakfast, lunch and dinner. We offer four on-campus food locations, including Subway and a café for late-night hunger. Your Cougar ID is all you need to eat anywhere on campus. INDIVIDUAL

It means who you are and how you do things matters. When you’re a Cougar athlete, you don’t just show up for practice. You’ll come with us during school visits and campus clinics to talk to younger athletes about the importance of character and sportsmanship. As a collegiate athlete, these younger students will look up to you. It’s your opportunity to be a good role model and lead by example. You will be among the best anywhere. VALUES

St. Francis is the patron saint of ecology. It’s no surprise that “Respect Creation” is one of our five Franciscan values. You’ll see the impact of our Green Campus initiatives everywhere, including the free bicycle loaning program (created by a student!) to encourage others to use less gas. In front of Brookside’s St. Francis statue, we hold a “Blessing of the Pets” every October for the Fort Wayne community. Many of our students’ Senior Capstone Projects involve environmental improvements. You can see one example above. Cole coordinated the planting of a rain garden around Mirror Lake!

Why a liberal arts education?

International travel allows you to experience

The University of Saint Francis has a long-standing reputation for quality and academic excellence. The reason why can be found in the liberal arts tradition that teaches beyond the basics of a professional education. It teaches you what employers tell us they need—highly competent professionals with critical thinking skills. This means that you can go to your new job with the skills to adapt to change and apply new learning quickly and effectively. Your boss is going to love you.

We believe students learn best when they get hands-on experience. Internships, co-ops and clinicals can help you figure out your career goals. All of these opportunities give you professional experience, so when you graduate you have the kind of advantage you need to stand out and land an interview. USF’s full-time professors (a high percentage compared to other places) use their professional and industry contacts to help their students find career connections.

150 HOURS OF OBSERVATION BEFORE STUDENT TEACHING BEGINS

Fort Wayne provides a perfect setting for earning an education degree because it’s home to such a variety of educational settings. Whether you want to teach in a very diverse, large public school or a small, private institution, Fort Wayne has it. You will have the opportunity to test out different classrooms, so when you graduate you will know how to find the perfect school setting for you.

That’s part of your education at USF, and that’s why, when we graduate our students as teachers, counselors, social workers, and healthcare professionals, they’re very good at what they do.

Practice your practical skills. Our state-of-the-art simulation lab, used by every healthcare student, gives you a safe place to practice your skills. Your human patient simulator will respond to your care in very real ways. You will run emergency simulations so you can react to real crisis situations with confidence. The hospital clinical supervisors always tell us they know which ones are the USF students. (Because

they’re the best!)

Let’s get your hands dirty. Many of our science programs are field-intensive. We take you out of the lab and into the rivers to study aquatic life, and into the woods to study plants where they thrive. Some programs keep you in the classroom because of “liability” concerns. We teach you the principles of safety, as well as the skills you’ll need to do field research, and send you exploring. We have a wide variety of science programs, including one that will prepare you to start your own environmental science company.

USF students learn how the world works. Our new META program (Media Entrepreneurship Training in the Arts) trains students to work in teams on real-world projects. Graphic design, animation, business, music technology and communication students will work together to complete projects commissioned from businesses in Fort Wayne. If your dream career requires more than just a bachelor’s degree, then USF is the place to be. We offer 14 graduate programs and our alumni get a significant discount on a second degree. Plus, we have six dual-accept healthcare programs with schools across the country. “Dual-accept” means you would have a seat in medical school as a high school senior, which means this is the last college search process you’ll ever have to navigate! Integrated Cooperatives (EPIC) allows students to get two years of paid co-op experience in an industry of their choice, while still graduating in four years. All students are encouraged to apply. It’s your job to study hard and make the most of your college experience. It’s our job to make sure you successfully navigate the rigors of a college education and make sure you graduate without unnecessary debt. With 120 years of successful alumni, we’re very good at it. We awarded over $14 million dollars in grants and scholarships last year. After all that aid, the average cost of a USF education compares favorably to that of many state schools. As a Franciscan institution, we believe a quality education should be available to everyone. Cost should never get in the way of your dream school.

“When I was searching for colleges, one of my determining factors was the cost. I was unwilling to put myself in the position where I would be burdened with massive student loans. At first I admit I was wary when I read the price tag for a Saint Francis education. As I went through the process I learned how affordable it truly was. USF offered many scholarships and forms of aid which reduced the cost to something I could afford and then some. Without this aid I never could have grown in the ways I have and I thank God every day for the education I am able to receive because of it.” - Nick Curtis, Junior, Secondary Education
