FACILITIES TM

Bishop John D’Arcy Stadium Bishop John D’Arcy Stadium on the west side of the campus is home to the only collegiate football program in Fort Wayne and now features a new surface thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. It also includes the R. Bruce Dye Strength Training Center and Shields Family Pavilion. The new facility will be a major asset to future Cougars building strength as well as speed for football on the recently dedicated Daniel Carter Speed Training track. The facility also provides a picturesque view of Kevin Donley Field and the west side of the campus from the donor-funded $1.5 million facility. USF became the first collegiate field in Indiana to utilize Sporturf thanks to generous contributions from private donors. Groundbreaking for the installation of this faster, safer artificial surface took place on June 23, 2004, and makes Bishop D’Arcy Stadium a versatile venue not only for football but also USF men’s and women’s soccer and community youth football, soccer and lacrosse programs. Lights were installed in June 2012. Football offices are located in the Tom Jehl Football Complex, along with home and visitor locker rooms. Hutzell Fitness Center Hutzell Fitness Center had its grand opening in fall 2007. Located on the east side of Hutzell Athletic Center, the facility houses an impressive variety of workout equipment to help anyone reach their fitness goals.

4

Hutzell Athletic Center Hutzell Athletic Center is the home for Cougar basketball and volleyball, and contains locker room facilities for men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, softball, Cross Country, track and field, offices for the coaching staff on the second floor, west side, and the Hutzell Fitness Center. HAC was opened in May 1990, and in the first basketball game that November, USF edged IPFW 66-64. During the $200,000 Rolland Hall of Athletics renovation project, HAC coaches’ offices were relocated to the second floor of the west end. The project also included expansion of locker room and training facilities, completed in August 2008. Coonan Field Coonan Field is named in honor of the first and long-time USF coach and athletic director, Terry Coonan. It was dedicated during homecoming in the fall of 1996 and is located just south of Achatz Hall of Science. Cougar Field Cougar Field was finished in fall 1991, and USF played its first baseball game there in the spring of 1992. USF defeated Tri-State in the dedication game. Westendorf Field The softball field on the mid-east edge of the campus was completed and dedicated in spring 2000. USF swept crosstown rival Indiana Tech 3-0 and 5-2.

MEN’S & WOMEN’S

TM

2016-17 OUTLOOK WOMEN

After three years of recruiting, University of Saint Francis Golf Coach Tim Alexander has the women’s team on track with the goals he set forth when he took over the program in late summer of 2013. Coach Alexander has brought the accountability, commitment, education importance and family atmosphere to the Lady Cougars. “We have been very fortunate the last couple of seasons to win a few invitationals and break a few school records,” said Alexander. “The kids have to buy into what you’re trying to teach them. They don’t always understand why we do things a certain way, and it certainly hasn’t been easy. It’s safe to say this last spring, the four girls were the closest group of young ladies I’ve ever coached. It’s really neat to see. Special things happen when you are playing for more than just yourself.”

GOLF

Sophomore Alyn Clark rounds out the returning players from last year’s 77-24 team record–breaking season. “Alyn is just a fun person to be around,” Alexander stated. “She’s an excellent student who works hard at her game all year round. We changed her golf swing after the spring season. I explained that to take five steps forward, we may have to take three steps back. She’s been very welcoming to being coached and has worked extremely hard this summer on her game.” Joining the Lady Cougars this fall is freshman Gabbi Keller and 2016 All-State selection Marissa Singer. “Gabbi hits the ball really well,” Alexander observed. “Gabbi is a really good putter. I’m really looking forward to working with her. She just has a great attitude.”

Returning this fall for her senior season is Nicole Norton, who won “Breakout Performer” at the 2015 CASPY Awards. Norton has just missed out the last two seasons on being all-conference. Norton will captain the Lady Cougars this fall and spring season. “Nicole has been a great ambassador for our program the last three years,” Alexander stated. “Nicole is a great student that has worked very hard in the classroom and on her game. Nicole doesn’t take any days off.”

8

COUGAR ATHLETICS 2016-17

“Marissa has probably the most God-given athletic ability of any player I have ever coached,” Alexander said. “We have a great player-coach relationship. I’ve spent a lot of time around Marissa and her family. Marissa understands I want the best for her and she understands I am going to push her. Marissa’s summer tournament experience will be a welcomed addition to our team.”

All-Crossroads League golfers Nikki LaLonde and Regina Reilly also return this season. Both players have been toward the top in scoring averages in the fall and spring season.

The Lady Cougars open up the 2016 fall season at Denison on Sept 3. USF finished fourth out of the 15 Division 3 teams that competed last season. Following Denison, the Cougars look to win the John Carroll Invitational. The Lady Cougars have won the last two invitationals at John Carroll.

“They are two players that we have built the team around,” Alexander observed. “Regina works extremely hard at her game. Nikki comes from a family with a strong background in golf. Nikki made us a lot better as soon as she stepped foot on campus two years ago.”

“We have some big goals we want to accomplish this season,” Alexander concluded. “The girls have put in the work this summer. This is the most talented group of players from top to bottom we have had. More importantly, the closest group as well. We are ready to go.”

COUGAR ATHLETICS 2016-2017

MEN

Motivated by a disappointing 2015-16 season, the University of Saint Francis men’s golf team heads into 2016-17 intent on improvement after a long three months off after a sixth-place finish in the Crossroads League Tournament.

“Coff is another player we need to play well for the team score,” Alexander stated. “I’m sure he is disappointed with how things ended last spring season. He is a hard worker. I look for him to have a strong season as well.” Senior Tyler Speigl and junior Austin Smith are also returning players for the Cougars this season.

“There is way too much talent on this team to have the results we ended with,” USF Head Coach Tim Alexander asserted. “We had some distractions last year and some team members lost their focus. We head into 2016-17 with experience and we have added some freshmen who can really play.”

“Tyler will captain our team this season,” Alexander revealed. “Tyler has been a great ambassador of our program the last three years. He’s an excellent student who understands the culture we have created here from Day 1.” “With Smitty you have an athlete who is fun to be around,” Alexander continues. “Sometimes we have to tone him down some. Smitty has a chance to crack the top five this season. His degree pursuit is time consuming, something which has affected his practice times in the past. We have always said education comes first here.”

Junior Tyler White finished tied for 15th in the CLT at Glendarin and is expected to lead the Cougars this fall. White’s stroke average last fall was 76.33 and 77.12 in the spring. “We need Whitey to play well for our team score,” Alexander observed. “To have scores of 76-72-76 in the (CLT) with a T-15th is a credit to how good our conference really is. He has a lot of college tournament experience. He knows how the program runs and we expect him to have a big season.”

Freshmen Brady Marshall, Austin Proffitt and IUPUI transfer Garrett Leeper join the Cougars this fall. “With Brady and Austin there is a lot of talent there and we believe their potential is just starting to show,” Alexander asserted. “Both kids are very high character kids who will bring some leadership in as freshmen. We are excited to develop their games the next four years to the level they want before they graduate.”

Junior Chase Ellsworth is another impact player for Coach Alexander’s strong junior class. Ellsworth tied for 20th at the CLT (75-75-77) last spring. The year before Ellsworth finished sixth in the CLT which was good for All-CL as a freshman.

“Garrett is a kid who tried to walk on a D-1 school,” Alexander continues. “We are fortunate to get Garrett. A ton of talent who has the chance to be a really good player for us for four years. We just need him to stay focused and not get down on himself.”

“I’ve said it several times that Chase Ellsworth has the best short game of any player I’ve seen or coached at the college level,” Alexander continues. “Just a great pair of hands. We need to work on his ball striking and keeping the driver in play. All the tools are there.” Junior Ian Coffey will be the assistant captain of this year’s team. He’s finished at the Crossroads tournament. Coffey’s fall scoring average of 77.11 and 78.4 places him third among returning Cougars.

TM

The Cougars will travel to some really good golf courses this fall: Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru for the Huntington Invitational; two 4-Star golf courses the Cougars call home in Autumn Ridge/ Cherry Hill. Following that, the Cougars will make a return trip to Egypt Valley Golf Club hosted by Taylor University. “We have put together a very good fall schedule,” Alexander concluded. “The kids, as well as myself, are ready to go.”

Experience is an asset for the University of Saint Francis Lady Cougars and Head Coach Christy Young, who welcomes back nine seniors to lead the way in 2016. The Cougars return eight starters from the 2015 season on a team that finished with an overall 11-8 record and fourth in the Crossroads League. USF expects to challenge for the CL championship and an NAIA National Championship appearance in the 22nd season for the program, the ninth under the guidance of Young. USF is intent on building on its success from 2015 by focusing on strong leadership and consistency. Senior captain and three-year starter Katie Barker will lead the back for USF. Other returning starters returning on defense include senior Sophie Long, junior Jasmyn Kalsto and sophomore Paige Berg, an experienced back four to help USF improve on its 25 goals against 2015 season total which ranked them 2nd in the Crossroads League. Newcomer Alexa Siegel (Bishop Dwenger H.S.), the Summit Athletic Conference 2015 Player of the Year, will undoubtedly contribute to the strength of the back line along with Cathy

Basinger (Kalida (Ohio) H.S.), who earned First Team All League. Young will rely on seniors Summer Holtkamp and Nicole Stephan to connect USF in the middle. They will be joined by sophomore Katarina Perez who gave the Cougars extensive quality minutes last year as a freshman. Newcomer Yulissa Rodriguez will provide the composure in the middle that the Cougars will need to keep possession. Up top, the Cougars have several options including two-year starter Mackenzie Starcevich (senior, 9 goals in 2015), Hannah Elzinga (junior), and senior Kristin Strout. Freshman and member of the IHSAA State Runner-up, Hannah Ehrhardt (Penn High School), and Bridget Keys will add to the Cougars’ dangerous attack up top. In goal, junior Morgan Hammon returns with the most experience and with the ability to challenge for best goalkeeper in the Crossroads League. After redshirting, junior Ashley Reed will also compete for playing time.

Experience the University of Saint Francis The University of Saint Francis is located on the western edge of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The beautiful 108-acre campus, with its rolling lawns and tree-shaded coves, surrounds scenic Mirror Lake. Among the major main campus features is stately Brookside, a castlelike mansion that once housed the entire university. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 2, 1982. Now meticulously restored to its former grandeur, the one-time summer home of turn-of-the-century industrialist John Bass is routinely toured by the public, especially during Christmas at the Castle each year. Brookside houses USF administrative offices, and public and administrative meetings are often held there. The Pope John Paul II Center, a 90,000 square-foot complex, houses an expanded library, classrooms, faculty offices, computer labs, computer training facilities, dining facilities and student services. The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Campus Shoppe are currently located in the facility. The Achatz Hall of Science contains seven science-related laboratories, preparation rooms, independent research rooms, radiation and instrumental analysis labs, a greenhouse, a telescopic observation desk and the Gunderson Auditorium. Trinity Hall, the main administration building, includes offices, the St. Francis Chapel, dining room and Diversity Center. Residence facilities include Bonzel Hall, Padua Hall and Clare Hall. The Doermer Family Center for Health Science Education duplicates modern hospital facilities for surgical technology, critical care, physical therapy, occupational therapy and outpatient clinics. Also included are a radiologic technology lab, a nursing simulation laboratory, classrooms and faculty offices. The Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center provides facilities for degree programs in commercial art, fine art, art education, communication and computer animation. The center features two art galleries, art studios, a television studio, computer facilities, classrooms and offices. Bishop John D’Arcy Stadium, Kevin Donley Field on the west side of the campus is home to the only collegiate football program in Fort Wayne. The R. Bruce Dye Strength Training Center and Shields Family Pavilion is located on the south end of the stadium. USF has the first collegiate field utilizing Sporturf, thanks to generous contributions from private donors. This faster, safer artificial surface makes Bishop D’Arcy Stadium a versatile venue for USF and high school soccer and lacrosse, as well as Cougar football. The stadium also holds the USF football offices in the Tom Jehl Football Complex under the west stands.

16

The Hutzell Athletic Center houses facilities for Cougar basketball and volleyball teams, and contains locker room facilities for men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, softball, Cross Country and track and field, plus offices for the coaching staff and a fitness center. Intercollegiate men’s and women’s golf and tennis are also offered at USF. Intramural coeducational sports are offered year-round for fun, fitness and friendship. The Center for Franciscan Life is located in the Campus Ministry building as well as guest rooms and counseling rooms, and is the home of the campus chaplain. All of the buildings are just a short walk from the Student Center, with its game and meeting rooms and lounge. The North Campus, located across Spring Street from Brookside, features an auditorium, gymnasium, classrooms, offices, and the Lupke Gallery. This year, we proudly opened our new USF Downtown location in the heart of Fort Wayne. The USF Business Center, located in the former Chamber of Commerce building, houses the Keith Busse School of Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership. The university’s business programs are housed in this facility, allowing students to have unprecedented access to local business and community leaders for internships and mentoring opportunities. The Business Center also houses the Historic Woman’s Club, which will host many events throughout the year and is available for rental. Just around the corner, in the USF Robert Goldstine Performing Arts Center, our new Music Technology Center opened to students this year as well. These classrooms, recording studios and performance spaces contain state-of-the-art equipment and were designed with the expertise of our community partner Sweetwater. Plus, the downtown location puts students within footsteps of many of Fort Wayne’s cultural hotspots to collaborate and mentor with other creative groups in the city. With the historic 2,000-seat auditorium available, many outstanding performances will come from these new education spaces. Founded in 1890 as a comprehensive university in the Catholic Franciscan tradition, the University of Saint Francis offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate programs through the School of Health Sciences, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Keith Busse School of Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership and School of Creative Arts. In addition to its traditional programs, USF designs focused curricula for working adults in Fort Wayne, Crown Point and online. Currently 2,240 students from a broad geographic region attend USF for its academic excellence.

MEN’S 2016 OUTLOOK

SOCCER

The 2016 season will be a challenge to continue building. With four juniors and seniors on the roster, the eighteen sophomores and twenty freshmen will be counted on to turn things around from the previous year.

Joining the Cougars this fall to play in the midfield are Juan Bucuram, Colin Calvert, Juan Gonzalez, Alexis Gutierrez, Haris Kostic, and Caleb Wedeven.

Frustrating is the best word to sum up 2015, a season of many challenges. With nine returning players from the previous season and 22 new players, the inexperience proved a difficult hurdle.

DEFENSE

“The team played with a lot of intensity last season,” USF Head Coach Mitch Ellisen said evaluating the one-win season. “Experience is one thing a coach cannot give his players. However, our competitors’ coaches were impressed with the effort the team played even though we struggled to get in the win column. All I asked from the players last fall was to compete. From that standpoint, that is what we did and for that, I am most proud of with my team.” Ellisen is cautiously optimistic that 2016 will be different with a much different team. “We all want to get back to the success the program has had in the past,” Ellisen observed. “Our large class of new players are now older and have had a fall and spring season of games. “This previous offseason was different from this past year because we did not have enough players to train,” he continued. “We had the players to train and they worked very hard this past winter. Hopefully this motivated the players to work harder last summer and to compete better. That I am hopeful for and we will see the growth in our players.”

The back line will be young this year, but with the graduation of Senior captain Nate Byrd, the defense will be a group of younger players. Fortunately for the Cougars Sr., Captain Sean Kampe returns and provides a lot of experience and a commanding voice to sort things out. JJr. Ross Gramling secures one of the flanks. Sophomores, Graham Denney, Vaughn Gallagher, Cole Granger, Cody Gray, Alex Lowe, Red Shirt-Brian Jaimes, Dane Jesse, “The back line with have a combination of youth and older players this fall. Finding central defenders was key for our recruiting efforts. The strength of Sr. Sean [Kampe] and jr. Ross [Gramling], is on the flanks running up and down the wide positions. They give us a better opportunity to penetrate the opponent’s defense,” says Coach Ellisen. “we have Sophomores who will push the two if there are problems.” In addition to the returning players are a group of new players. Added to the roster are Charles Fisher, Drew Forte, Ty LaBorde, Michael McClelland, and Do Thawng.

FORWARD

The forward position is an area we have improved. Sophomores Tito Cuellar, Alejandro Renteria, return and give us goal scoring experience. “Tito (Cuellar) and Nideo (Foster) will provide a much needed goal scoring punch to our team,” says Ellisen. “They can break down defenses with their technique and bring a tenacious attitude to score.”

MIDFIELD

In the midfield, the Cougars return senior Steven Johnson, sophomores Colin Barker, Nico Cardoso, and Tristen Rodriguez. The strength of the team will be in the midfield again this fall. “Our midfield has a lot of experience that will present a formidable attack to our opponent’s keeper,” Ellisen said. “Senior captain, Steven (Johnson) as well as sophomores Colin (Barker), and Nico (Cardoso) will help us to keep the ball and penetrate the defense. They will have an impact on our team this year. Also, the addition of some quality recruits will add depth in a strong midfield.”

Head coach Mitch Ellisen has faced many challenges as a coach and personally. However, overcoming obstacles in life is expected, and Ellisen is one who overcomes. His 24 years and 234 wins at the college level, 3 conference championships, 83% graduation rate, 3 valedictorians, and 44 Daktronics ScholarAthletes are proof of that. Ellisen also knows how to utilize the gifts of the coaching staff. For example, he uses Paco Castillo, one of the best assistant coaches in the area, to run the field players’ sessions while he trains the keepers.

COUGAR ATHLETICS 2016-2017

SCHEDULE The Cougars’ nonconference schedule includes trips to Ohio to play Shawnee State and Cincinnati Christian. USF also will play Missouri Baptist in St. Louis as well as Louisiana State University at Alexandria. There is a trip to Michigan to play at Siena Heights University, Concordia University, Lawrence Tech, and Rochester College. USF concludes nonconference action at D’Arcy Stadium for Senior Day against cross-town rival Indiana Tech. This nonconference schedule will prepare USF for the competitive Crossroads League schedule. “The Crossroads League is as competitive as always and there are no easy games,” Ellisen asserted. “The team will be ready the usual toughness of our games. “The team is extremely young and we will have to work hard to shape the team into a solid group. We are continuing to implement our motto: Control the ball, control your body, compete to the maximum. We are also implementing a leader structure that will teach the young men on my team to be better prepared for life after graduation. I am excited to see how quickly Coach Castillo and I can implement our style with this group. We have twenty-three new players coming in this fall,” Ellisen said. “We will be able to reinvent the way this team plays this fall.”

Mitch Ellisen

COACH ELLISEN QUICK FACTS

HEAD COACH / MEN’S SOCCER Mitch Ellisen returns for his eighteenth season at the helm of the USF men’s soccer program in the fall of 2016, continuing to build the Cougars into men of integrity using the game of soccer to complete this task. The 2015 season was a rebuilding year with twenty-two new players to add to the returning nine players. The team played with a lot of intensity, but the results did not come until the last game of the season. “I was proud of my players, the way we competed and was pleased with the way we never quit all season. One thing you cannot give a player is experience. We played with seven new players all season,” says Coach Ellisen. Under Ellisen, USF has played in two MCC Tournament Championships (2001 and 2002) is 60-55-5 in MCC regular-season competition and posted six-consecutive winning seasons in MCC play between 1999 and 2004. Overall, Ellisen’s teams have put together 11 of the 17 winning seasons in conference play. The Cougars also appeared in the NAIA Region VIII Final Four in three consecutive seasons (2001, 2002 and 2003). Ellisen’s Cougars won their second Crossroads League conference championship, the first coming in 2003 and the earlier one in 1977. The 2013 season USF collected its third conference title. In 2003 the team reached the NAIA Region VIII Championship match for the first time in the program’s history. Other noteworthy accomplishments during Ellisen’s fifteen-year tenure include a school-record 14-game winning streak to start the 2000 season, during which he acquired his 100th career win. He reached the 150-win plateau with a 3-2 win over Grace College in Bishop D’Arcy Stadium October 23, 2004. With 40 wins between 2000 and 2002, the Ellisenled Cougars achieved the best three-season win total in USF history, eclipsing the previous best of 33 wins from 1975-1977. Ellisen became the ninth head men’s coach in school history, moving from Bangor, Maine, where he restructured and developed a successful program at Husson College. The Braves were 81-46-6 during Ellisen’s seven-year stint, 16-4-1 in his final season in 1998. Husson advanced to the regional finals after upsetting 19th-ranked Houghton College. Husson qualified for the conference tournament every year under Ellisen, advanced to the title game three times and won in 1998. Ellisen was NAIA Northeast Region Coach-of-the-Year twice. He served on the Maine Olympic Development Program staff and was a staff coach at several camps, including the University of Maine soccer camps. Active in several professional associations, Ellisen is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and is a past president of the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches Association. He holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “A” License, the USSF National Goalkeeping License, and the NSCAA’s Advanced National Diploma. Ellisen also is a fixture in the Fort Wayne soccer scene. He serves as the director of goalkeeping for the Fort Wayne United FC. During his playing career at the University of Charleston, Ellisen was a four-year starter. He earned all-conference honors three times in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as a defender and midfielder.

VOLLEYBALL TM

2016 OUTLOOK Chloe Hubner (SR, S), the Crossroads League leader in assists and assists per set, will lead a number of new faces into the 2016 volleyball season on August 26 at Robert Morris University. “Chloe is a fantastic setter. She is tenacious on the court and plays with a passion that is contagious. She runs a really nice offense, so with her leadership our offense should gain stride quickly,” says Head Women’s Volleyball Coach Scott Haddix. Chloe will be joined by returning starters Cassidy Rammel (SO, OH) and Emily Poe (JR, DS). “Everything else is up for grabs really,” Haddix observed. “When you graduate five seniors you just have to get in the gym, let the girls battle it out and see who plays best. We’re excited about our returning players and very pleased with our incoming freshmen, but very few of them have any significant collegiate volleyball experience; that will be an issue for us early in the season.” The Lady Cougars will have to fill the void in the middle hitting position that was created with the graduation of Sara Clark and Morgan Hanson. Halie McMillan (SO, MH) played in a lot of matches last year, but suffered a knee injury in the final match of the season. Halie will have competition from a number of other USF players including sophomores Brianna Stone, Laura Sneary and Maddie Harper as well as freshmen Megan Diagostino, Kendra Binkley and Ava Kunkler. The Lady Cougars will also have to figure out who is going to replace the leadership and offensive production of outside hitter Carrie Clark. “Right now it looks like a good competition between Taylor Beetz (SR, OH) and Becca Pruden (SO, OH),” Haddix observed. “They both have different strengths and weaknesses so we will just have to wait and see who is the most consistent.” The right side will be a combination of players this fall with Tara Heald (SR, RS), Sadie Alberson (SO, OH) and incoming freshman Anne Clark competing for playing time. With the graduation of senior libero Rachel Weaver, the Cougars are counting on Valorie Flick to take over the critical defensive position. “We feel really confident about our defense going into this fall. We lost so many defensive players to injury last season which really hurt our level of play. Valorie will be on the court this fall which will be a huge plus for us,” says USF assistant coach Neal Putt. The Lady Cougars have to solidify a defense that just gave up too many points last season. Coach Haddix went on to say, “We knew we were going to have difficulties on defense last year, when we lost Valorie for the season, and then Emily, and then Cassie and then Rachel. We just ran out of defensive players early in the year and even after we got a few players back we never had them back to 100% as a unit. If you can’t stop teams, you have to outscore them. Some nights we could outscore our opponents and most nights we couldn’t.” Valorie, Emily, Sarah Hosinksi (SO, DS), Natalie Kuenning (FR, DS, S) and Nikki Marshal (FR, DS) will provide the defense for the Lady Cougars. “Emily and Nikki can attack the ball pretty well from the backrow too, they have good jumping ability,” commented Coach Putt who added “we have to be able to keep plays alive and extend rallies or our offense will have to carry the burden again this year, and that isn’t the plan.”

26

The Lady Cougars also have depth this year. Coach Haddix feels like the Lady Cougars are 2 or 3 players deep in every playing position including at setter. “When Sam Soltis committed this spring it was like a weight just lifted off my chest. We survived the last two seasons carrying only one setter on the roster mostly because we just didn’t have any luck in the recruiting process with a setter. I mean it wasn’t a huge need as it related to playing time unless Chloe got hurt. So, we tried to find setters but most of the athletes we talked to weren’t willing to wait their turn, so we held our breath, prayed a lot and Chloe stayed healthy. Sam changes all that. She is very capable of running this offense and we are excited to have her in the program and I am very excited to watch this team battle each other every day in practice,” said Haddix. Depth has been a huge need for the Lady Cougars who just haven’t performed well in long matches or two-day events over the past several seasons. The Lady Cougars went 1 and 6 in 5 set matches and were 3 and 5 on the second day of tournament events. Overall the Lady Cougars were 5 and 7 on Saturdays when having matches the day or night before. Coach Haddix thinks the issue was a bit of conditioning through injury but mostly just the number of plays being played by the same players. The need to have several players that can contribute over the course of 35-plus matches is a focus this coming season. According to Haddix, “Depth, real depth, not just bodies, has been a focus of our recruiting since I started here. We have that finally, we have the bodies, but those bodies have talent. Now we have to get out on the court, grow up and win.” WHO TO WATCH – Chloe Hubner (SR, S) – the senior setter has finished in the top of the league in setting the last two seasons and has arguably been the setter of the year in the conference over those two seasons. Valorie Flick (FR, L) – Valorie won the IHSAA Class 2A State Volleyball Championship as a sophomore and set the record for digs in a 5-set match in the process. She was an All-State Volleyball Award winner 3 consecutive years. Cassidy Rammel (SO, OH) — Cassidy had an impressive performance throughout her freshman season posting double digits in kills in multiple matches. Her progression to being more consistent and dominant will be crucial. WHAT TO WATCH – Serving – USF led the CR League in total aces last season but also led the CL in errors. The coaching staff likes to serve aggressively but wants to see consistency improve this season. Offense – USF has finished in the top 3 of all the offense-related categories the last two seasons. It will be interesting to see if the Lady Cougars can keep that streak going or even improve upon it. Defense - The offense may have finished in the top 3 of the statistics but the defense has finished in the bottom 3 of all the defensive statistics with the exception of the blocking stats. “We just have to play better defense, we all know it, we all knew it, we’ve talked about it, focused on it all spring and summer and the girls know we are going to focus on it all training camp. If the defense is better, it will be a better season,” according to Coach Haddix.

Scott Haddix,

Head Coach/Volleyball

Scott enters his third season at the University of Saint Francis and his 19th season overall as a volleyball coach at the collegiate and high school levels. Scott started USF tenure in the summer of 2014. He started his coaching career as an assistant coach with Taylor University-Fort Wayne and then served 10 seasons as the head coach. During his tenure at TUFW the Lady Falcons earned berths in eight National Championship Tournaments and TUFW played in three consecutive national championship matches. While at TUFW Coach Haddix became very familiar with several of the programs in the Crossroads League while playing them in nonconference events. After TUFW closed, Scott spent five seasons as head coach at Northrop High School and was named Summit Athletic Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2009 by The Journal Gazette. He has also served as the District 2 representative for the Indiana Coaches of Girls Athletics Volleyball Committee and director of Summit City Wave Volleyball Club. In addition to his coaching duties at USF, Scott speaks to nearly 7,000 high school students each academic year, providing presentations regarding how to build and maintain healthy relationships, date rape prevention seminars and how to date with a purpose. He presents annually at the IHSAA Student Leadership Conference, the largest student leadership conference of its kind in the United States. He has worked with middle school, high school and college-age students for over 20 years. Scott, his wife Anne, and daughters Alexandria, Natalya and Felicia live in the Fort Wayne area.
