Another year, another birthday for Rocky D. Bull By Jesse Stokes E D I T O R

I N

C H I E F

Rocky D. Bull is turning another year older this USF Week and that is cause for celebration. Rocky’s Birthday Bash will be Thursday at 8 p.m. at the MLK lawn. But just how old is the bullish mascot turning? According to Hannah Rendon, a graduate assistant in the Center for Student Involvement, which puts on the event, Rocky’s image was first trademarked in 1974, making the bull 45 years old. In typical birthday party fashion, there will be cake served to attendees. And according to Rendon, it will be 1950’s themed. On Rocky’s wish list this year is nothing for himself. Rather, he hopes students and alumni will be engaged throughout USF Week.

“Making a gift of any size on April 4th for USF Giving Day, that every Bull finds success through graduation and after, coming to his birthday party, and celebrate the best of USF Week,” Rendon said in an email to The Oracle about what items are on Rocky’s wish list. Rocky is no young calf anymore, but still has the energy of one. According to Rendon, that is because of the inspiration he received from students. “Rocky gains energy from the Bull Nation, USF reaching preeminence, graduating more students, and pushing itself to reach new heights keeps Rocky going,” Rendon said. Rocky has also gone through a lot of physical changes over the past four-and-a-half decades. Rocky was redesigned in 1986 and his current version debuted in 2003. His secret to staying ageless?

The continued impact and passion of the USF community. USF Week has much more to offer besides the excitement and celebration surrounding Rocky’s Birthday Bash. For Rendon, it is all about celebrating the history and defining the future of the university. “By embracing our history, celebrating our accomplishments, and working towards our future, we truly believe USF and the Tampa Bay community has what it takes to make USF unstoppable for years to come,” Rendon said. “USF Week includes a number of events celebrating USF pride such as the Ultimate Bull Talent Show, Rocky’s Birthday Bash, the University Lecture Series, Bullstock concert and more. USF will be flooded with green and gold to showcase our Bull Pride!”

What to expect during USF Week

By Alyssa Stewart N E W S

E D I T O R

The anticipated week that Rocky D. Bull and prideful USF students cherish every year is here: USF Week. Students will never be bored with the plethora of performances and events that will be conducted April 1-9. Some of the annual events include the kickoff, a University Lecture Series (ULS) event, the Ultimate Bull Talent Show, Rocky’s birthday bash and Bullstock. The week will also include items that the average college student cannot resist: free stuff. Students can expect free t-shirts, food, activities, music and performances. One of the most recent additions to USF Week is Food Crawl. The secondannual event is hosted by the residential hall council members and will provide food, activities and music on April 1 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Castor Kosove Lawn. According to the Associate Director for Center of Student Involvement (CSI) Josh Wilson, USF Week is about celebrating some of the best elements of the university. “USF Week was established when former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio declared April 9th to be USF Day in 2010, the one-day celebration has morphed into a weeklong celebration known as USF Week,” Wilson said in an

email to The Oracle. Though the events are annual, there will be some changes to the locations of some events this year, according to Wilson. For the first time, the kickoff will be held in The Village next to The Fit, instead of outside the Student Services building. Bullstock has been moved to Lot 35 — at the corner of USF Holly Drive & USF Maple Drive — instead of the Yuengling Center. USF Week will begin with the kickoff at 5:30 p.m. which will feature performances, speakers, food, activities and music. “The Kickoff is an event that has the feel of a pep rally,” Wilson said. “The Herd of Thunder (marching band) plays our favorite tunes, our president, dean of students, along with the Student Government (SG) president and vice president welcome students to help kick off the week.” With speakers such as President Judy Genshaft, Dean of Students Danielle McDonald, Alumni A s s o c i at i o n E xe c ut ive Director Bill McCausland and SG President and Vice President Moneer Kheireddine and Shaquille Kent, it is safe to say you’ll need to prepare your bull signage for the chant “as always, go Bulls.” Students can also expect

performances throughout the week from ULS, Ultimate Bull Talent Show and Bullstock. “(ULS) will be hosting social media sensation, Josh Peck, on April 2, “ Wilson said. “All faculty, staff and community members are welcome to attend this free lecture via a first-come-firstserve line that will begin forming at 5:30 p.m. the day of the lecture.” The seventh annual Ultimate Bull Talent Show will be held April 3 at 8 p.m. in the Marshall Student Center Oval Theater. Students can support their fellow Bulls when they battle it out to be crowned the “Ultimate Bull.” After performances from the Nickelodeon sensation and some talented Bulls, USF Week will have its last entertainment on April 5 for the annual Bullstock concert. From 6 p.m. until midnight, students can watch live artists and enjoy food trucks and carnival rides. Bullstock will feature musical performances from AJR, 3OH!3, lovelytheband and the two Battle of the Band winners, Sick Hot Band and the Taverns. Bringing it back to where it all started in 2010 with Iorio, USF day will wrap up the week’s festivities April 9. CSI will provide free doughnuts and students can write a message about why they love USF.

A look at this year’s Bullstock performers By Maria Ranoni M A N A G I N G

E D I T O R

USF Week begins Monday and that means Bullstock is right around the corner. The annual music-festival style event will take place April 5 and will feature AJR, 3OH!3, lovelytheband and the USF Battle of the Band winners. Aside from the music, there will be novelties like food trucks and some carnival rides. This will all take place in Lot 35 at the corner of USF Holly Drive and USF Maple Drive beginning at 5 p.m. The

bands are scheduled to start playing at 6 p.m. The indie-pop band AJR was formed by brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met about twelve years ago, according to ABC News. Since then, they have grown a large fan base with singles like “Weak” and “Sober Up.” Although they have gained notoriety recently, they were not always as popular. “Our very first show that we played I think there were 3 people in the room. And because we actually played that show for them they became lifelong fans...I think

we grew because we paid attention to every single person who cared,” Adam told ABC News. On the other hand, 3OH!3, composed of Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte, may be a name that some college students are a bit more familiar with from their past. Their breakout single “DONTTRUSTME” is still the electronic duo’s most popular song on Spotify with over 73 million streams. Some may remember the groups infamous line imploring listeners to “do the Hellen Keller and talk with your

hips.” In regards to the more problematic lyrics of that song in particular, Motte told Paper Magazine, “In retrospect if we’d known that many people were going to listen to it maybe we would’ve thought more about it, but that’s kind of the beauty of what we did and I think people understand that. Even more so today, when we’re facing so many serious issues, it’s important for music to have fun and put smiles on people’s faces.” Lovelytheband is newcomer as opposed to the other headliners with

members Mitchy Collins, Jordan Greenwald and Sam Price meeting in 2016 while bar hopping, according to Billboard. The group released their first album, “finding it hard to smile,” in 2018. Their single “broken” has reached almost 90 million streams on Spotify. Bullstock is a free event for USF students and nonstudents alike. According to the event’s sponsor’s, the Campus Activities Board, Facebook, exact set times for the bands will be announced closer to the event.

Men’s Basketball

Bulls face DePaul in CBI championship round

By Brian Hattab A S S I S T A N T

S P O R T S

E D I T O R

For the first time in program history, USF men’s basketball will play games in April. The Bulls play for the College Basketball I nv i t a t i o n a l (CBI) championship starting Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Yuengling Center against former Conference USA and Big East opponent DePaul. “It feels great. It really does,” coach Brian Gregory said. “I’m happy for our guys, they’ve put in a lot of work. This is a great reward for them, to be able to continue to play, get a few more days of practice in, preparation, keep getting better. To play a Big East opponent for this is great as well.” To reiterate — after only winning 10 games last season, USF (22-13, 8-10 AAC) is still playing as the calendar filips to April, which is something only 13 other Division I programs can also say. “People have talked about that. That is unique, obviously,” Gregory said. “You have to win games in order to do that. So, to our guys’ credit, they’ve been able to continue to win and continue to improve, which I think is really, really important. We finished the month of March over .500 — I think every month during the season, we’ve been able to do that — so we’re hoping to be able to do the same

thing in April.” In order to finish April above .500, the Bulls will have to get past a tough opponent in DePaul (18-15, 7-11 Big East). “Great length around the baskets, so that helps them defensively,” Gregory said. “Good size. They’re grown men. You don’t go through the Big East without being able to go through battles and tough games and different things like that. Their ability to score on the perimeter and make shots is off the charts, so our defense is going to be tested, our physicality is going to be tested.” One of those “grown men” is senior guard Max Strus, who finished conference play third in the Big East in scoring at 18.86 points per game. Strus has since increased that average to 20 points per game thanks to the CBI, though the Big East appears to not recognize those stats. But it’s not just Strus the Bulls have to worry about. “They have three of the top-20 scorers in the Big East,” Gregory said. “Femi [Olujobi], inside, is really, really talented. [Eli] Cain, at the guard spot, another big, strong, physical guard.” The championship round also presents a unique situation, because unlike pretty much every other college basketball tournament, the CBI’s championship is not one-

and-done. The champion will have to win twice. “One of the calls I’m going to make ... is to Billy [Mohl], our baseball coach,” Gregory said. “Because they go those weekend series — the mental approach to that. Because as a college basketball coach, I’ve never done that. It’s different, there’s no doubt about it.” If USF can pull off the series victory, to use a baseball term, the Bulls would take home their first postseason tournament championship in almost 30 years, when USF won the Sun Belt conference tournament. It’d also be a punctuation mark on a season that has drastically turned what was once a down-and-out program into a contender. “Culture is built every single day and it’s built by the beliefs and the behaviors of your players,” Gregory said. “We can have logos and symbols and slogans up on the wall — that doesn’t do it. It’s how our guys live, what they believe in and how they go about doing their daily life in a disciplined fashion. When you have tangible evidence it’s working, it obviously always helps.” All three games will be televised on ESPNU. Game 2 on Wednesday and, if necessary, Game 3 on Friday, will be played in Chicago at DePaul’s home arena, Wintrust Arena.

The spirit of giving during USF Week By Sam Newlon A S S O C I A T E

E D I T O R

Last year, if you wanted to make a donation to USF on Giving Day, you would have to make a it to the USF Foundation Endowed Scholarship. But now, on April 4, you’ll have 39 different causes, organizations and colleges to choose from when donating your money for USF’s Giving Day. “This year, we expanded our technical capabilities and now we are able to have multiple campaigns going on throughout the day,” said Nevena Pehar. “If you are a grad of Arts and Sciences, you could make a gift to there.” Pehar is the assistant director of development for

young alumni at USF. She said donors can still give to the USF Foundation as a whole, but that giving potential donors more choices would help benefit USF and its students. “If it’s supporting students, that’s what people want to give to,” Pehar said. “So, last year, the scholarship was a good, broad thing to advertise. “I think people like making a choice…I have multiple passions, so for me, even if I can’t make one huge gift, I can give to a few things to help get them to their donor goal.” Donor goals will be a major part of this year’s Giving Day success. Instead of focusing on a monetary goal, Kristy Herrington, the Annual Giving office’s communications marketing officer, said the day is

instead focused on donor goals. “We’re all about participation,” Herrington said. “We have a ‘gift goal’ that we’re trying to reach. It’s 1,500 gifts this year, but we really emphasize gifts of any size, so donors can gift $5 and that still really helps us out, so that’s why we make it more about the number of gifts and donor participation versus dollars.” The USF Giving Day website is easy to navigate with bright green buttons labeled “Give Now” under the different organizations and causes to give to. There is a category to give in support of student athletes, nursing students, seniors who are close to graduating are are in need financial aid and Feeda-Bull among many others.

Some causes, like Feed-aBull, have challenged donors who have already made a contribution and are listed at the top of the page to help get others to donate. “Sam’s Hudson Beach Bar made a $500 gift to Feed-a-Bull,” Herrington said. “They’re just excited to be helping students at USF with food insecurities and, obviously, being a restaurant, that’s a good tie.” The right side of the cause pages is dedicated to the donations. There are options for $5, $19, $25, $50, $100 and a custom amount to donate. The $19 donation is intended to celebrate Judy Genshaft’s 19 years as the USF system president. “This is just to get more people giving back to USF

through USF,” Pehar said. “If you’re passionate about something at USF and what you care about and matters to you, we’ll help you find a way to support to support that at USF.” Although there are only a few gifts that have trickled in so far, Pehar and Herrington both said they don’t anticipate a majority of the gifts to be sent in either the day before or on Giving Day. “We don’t have very many now because Giving Day is on April 4,” Herrington said. “We’re driving people to make their gifts either the day before or on April 4, so you really try to capture everything on that one day.”
