MTV and Saturday Night Live stars headline comedy show

W R I T E R

A long lasting tradition of USF’s Homecoming Week, the Stampede Comedy Show is set to host performances by comedians Nicole Byer and Alex Moffat. USF’s Stampede Comedy Show will be free for USF students and the Tampa Bay community, taking place in the Yuengling Center on Oct. 15th with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Byer is known most commonly for her role on MTV’s “Girl Code” and hosting Netflix’s original cooking show

“Nailed it!” Appearing on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, Moffat has remained a consistent member of the cast during the 2018 season. Valeria Rosa, a sophomore majoring in interdisciplinary social sciences, said she is excited to support a prominent female comedian. “I love Nicole Byer not only because she’s funny, but she takes stands on issues that are important to me,” Rosa said. “She’s passionate about empowering other women and expressing how it feels to be black in America.” Byer has been known to take

to social media to discuss racial injustices in her personal life and around the world. “Being black in America: Going to work at a secure closed set where I had to show my ID to get in, and having a PA refuse to look at a call sheet and him saying ‘I don’t know if you belong here’ while we stand in front of a trailer with my name on the door,” Byer tweeted after a negative altercation on of her production’s set. According to healthyish, Byer considers herself a part of the body positive movement. “If someone looks at you, that means your body’s powerful,”

Byer told healthyish. “They had to stop their day to look at you. If they say something to you, that means they couldn’t get through their day without saying something to you.” Thomas Nucci, a junior and aspiring comedian, said he looks up to Moffat in a way for how far he has come in his comedic career. “I think he’s an inspiration to people like myself who are looking to get into that type of work,” Nucci said. “He really paid his dues to get where he is now and his hard work is what put him on the cast of Saturday Night Live.”

Known commonly for his political parodies on Saturday Night Live, such as portraying President Donald Trump’s son and tech giants like Mark Zuckerberg, he is expected to become a mainstay on the cast for future seasons to come. As USF continues it’s yearly traditions and prepares for another Stampede Comedy Show, students of all kinds are enthusiastic over the upcoming show. “I really can’t wait,” Rosa said. “It’s bound to be such a fun night, especially with such two great comedians performing for free.”

Homecoming Superbull XX will begin Oct. 15 and USF is welcoming alumni and current students with the theme, “Our Week. Our Homecoming. Our USF.” In the midst of the free food, merchandise, performances, celebrities and activities it is easy to forget about the funding that made it all possible. The week of Homecoming traditions and festivities will cost $288,525. The USF mascot Rocky, the Herd of Thunder band — the marching band — and the

Homecoming court will be engaging with students for the kickoff of Homecoming week Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The $4,800 kickoff will entail promotional items and free food, according to Joshua Wilson, the assistant director of Center for Student Involvement. For marketing purposes, $15,000 was used for advertisements, flyers and merchandise. The Stampede Comedy Show headlined by MTV Girl Code personality Nicole Byer and Saturday Night Live comedian Alex Moffat will cost $55,650, according to Wilson. If you gather your dancing

shoes, a semi-formal outfit and submit your vote for king and queen, you are prepared to attend the Homecoming Ball on Oct. 17, which cost $18,000 to put on, according to Wilson. The dance will provide refreshments and music. The night will be topped off with the crowning of king and queen from the Homecoming court. Voting for Homecoming king and queen will end Oct. 15 at midnight. According to Wilson, the most costly event of the week is the $130,475 concert performed by the hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd. The annual USF tradition will be held at the Yuengling Center on Oct.

18 at 8:00 p.m. To supplement the cost of the concert, students can purchase tickets for $12 and guest tickets for $18. Full of rides, food and performances, the carnival held in the Yuengling Center parking lot on Oct. 19 will cost $61,000, according to Wilson. There will be a range of family-friendly and adult rides, which are free of cost for the night, but food will be available to purchase. The event is from 3:00 p.m. to midnight, with performances starting at 8:30 p.m. On the same day, the $3,000 Homecoming Parade will walk along Holly Drive, Maple Drive and Alumni Drive at 7 p.m.,

according to Wilson. To keep the energy high, $600 will be used to fund the activities for the team competitions, according to Wilson. Some activities include a banner competition, soda tab collection, Charit-A-Bull donations — donating non-perishable foods — flag football and Color the Campus — which entails painting window panes on the inside of the Marshall Student Center. The groups will be competing throughout the week and graded on a point system created on a Google spreadsheet to determine the winner.

HOMECOMING 2018

Rae Sremmurd is the hip-hop duo that recorded the song behind the viral Mannequin Challenge. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE

W R I T E R

Known for the viral song Black Beatles – the same song that was used for the viral mannequin challenge and was number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 – the hiphop duo Rae Sremmurd will perform at this year’s annual homecoming concert on Oct. 18. The concert will take place at the Yuengling Center, opening doors at 7 p.m. and starting at 8 p.m. Student tickets are available for $12 (including fees), one student-guest ticket for $18 and non-student tickets for $25 (plus fees). Students will have to present their USF ID with their student ticket at the entrance. Formed by two brothers, Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee, the duo is from Tupelo, Mississippi, in 2009, the duo signed their first record deal with Mike WiLL Made-It, an American record producer and songwriter, in 2013. The group moved to Georgia in 2013 to work with Mike WiLL Made-It’s record label, Ear Drummers. In the new city, they performed in clubs and talent shows, which later led to an increase in popularity. According to the duo’s official website, their first single under Ear Drummers, No Flex Zone, was a breakout, becoming a pop-culture phenomenon throughout 2014 and entering Billboard’s Hot 100 and Top 40.

In 2015, the duo debuted their first album, SremmLife, which was later certified as platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2016. The album debuted number five on the Billboard Top 200 and number one on Billboard Hip-Hop. It featured the song Throw Sum Mo, with the collaboration of Nicki Minaj & Young Thug, according to the duo’s official website. With their increasing popularity, Rae Sremmurd has been nominated for multiple musical awards, winning the BET Award for best group in 2015 and the Billboard Music Award for top rap collaboration. Also in that same year, their debut album was nominated as one of the best albums and ranked as the third best of the year by Complex magazine. “It’s the energy, that’s what #SremmLife is all about,” Lee wrote on the duo’s official website. “We bring the fun back to music!” In 2016, the duo released their second album, SremmLife 2, featuring the Billboard Hot 100 number-one song Black Beatles. On that same year, Lee announced that both brothers were working to debut solo albums. On May 4, the duo released their latest album, SremmLife 3, as a triple album package consisting of their solo albums, Swaecation and Jxmtroduction, called SR3MM.
