Bringing iconic holiday movie foods to life Nolan Brown S TA F F
W R I T E R
Holiday movies are an iconic cornerstone of the Christmas season. What’s even more classic is the holiday food that adorns millions of tables on Dec. 25. But there are some memorable dishes in holiday movies often divert from the classic turkey, gravy and stuffing. Here are three of the most iconic not-so-traditional foods in holiday movies.
Chinese Roast Duck Having your turkey eaten by a pack of dogs right before dinner isn’t ideal. With no other choice, the Parker family in the 1983 film “A Christmas Story” resorted to Christmas dinner at a Chinese restaurant. The venue was set — Chop Suey Palace — and the Parker family was presented with a beautiful holiday bird. Just not quite the turkey they had hoped for. As Mr. Parker had pointed out, a Chinese roast duck was smiling back at them. The head waiter made quick work of the duck’s head with a butcher knife and dinner was served.
Popular food YouTuber Andrew Rea, who hosts the channel Binging with Babish, recreated the dish in 2017. After an extensive process of inflating the duck to separate the skin and fat, seasoning with a five-spice mix, leaving in the fridge for one to three days and roasting at 350 degrees for an hour, the end result is Peking duck with a Thanksgiving flair.
Roast Beast After saving Christmas in the 1966 film “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” the Grinch is invited to join the festivities by the Whos of Whoville. He even gets to carve the “roast beast,” serving the first piece to Cindy Lou Who. Given the outlandish creations of Dr. Suess, the contents of roast beast could’ve been anything.
The roast beast in the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” can be made with cornbreadbased stuffing and a deboned turkey. SPECIAL
TO THE ORACLE
The mystery meat was left a mystery. But it turns out it’s just a deboned turkey, according to Rea. The whole deboned turkey was stuffed with a cornbread-based stuffing and put in the oven for a total cooking time of a little over two hours. What emerged was a real-life take on Dr. Suess’ mystery meat creation.
Maple Syrup Spaghetti In the 2003 movie “Elf,” Buddy learns he isn’t actually an elf. But he still sticks to elf traditions, including their obsession with sugar. As with most elves, he sticks to the four main food groups — candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup. He made that known after he topped off spaghetti with a generous serving of maple syrup. The following morning Buddy created a peculiar breakfast — leftover spaghetti topped with assorted marshmallows, sprinkles and yes, a heaping glug of maple syrup. A crumbled chocolate Pop-Tart completed an unprecedented — and entirely unhealthy — holiday breakfast. The recipe is selfexplanitory, but it isn’t quite a balanced breakfast. Make at your own risk.

E D I TO R
The song doesn’t lie. This is the most wonderful time of the year. How could you think otherwise? The weather is generally cooler, school is wrapping up, festive parties are happening — I could go on and on. Another thing that’s worth your time this season is an old staple: Going to the mall. Sure, you may be thinking, “Why should I go to the mall? I can buy everything I need online. Plus, the parking sucks this time of year.” Well, there’s nothing that can really be done about parking, but if you can manage to find a spot at the mall, it’ll be worth your while.
You’ll find better gifts Maybe it’s me, but online shopping doesn’t do it for me. You have to actually know what you’re looking for when shopping on sites like Amazon, so you’re less likely to accidentally stumble on something great.
International Plaza in Tampa will offer dogs and cats to have their picture taken with Santa on Dec. 8 and 15 from 7-9 a.m. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE If you’re in a brick-andmortar store, you’re still going to find what you came for (most likely, at least), but you may also see something you’d never think about in a million years that will make the perfect gift. With everything else being equal when it comes to shopping, the mall still has online shopping beat just based on spontaneity.
There are fun activities Maybe your idea of fun is more than shopping. That’s all right. There’s plenty more to do. The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel has synthetic ice skating and hockey slap shot challenges going on now until Jan. 5. It also has a light show choreographed to the music of TransSiberian Orchestra, which runs through New Year’s
Eve. Westfield Citrus Park is screening holiday films. On Dec. 6, The Grinch (2018) will be shown and on Dec. 13, The Polar Express will be featured. All malls offer pictures with Santa, but International Plaza in Tampa may be the winner for animal lovers. On Dec. 8 and 15 from 7-9 a.m., you’re able to have your dog or cat have its picture taken with Santa.
It’s something to do with friends I can’t argue with the convenience of sitting on your couch ordering stuff off Amazon Prime. But that’s a pretty lonely task, don’t you think? You may as well make your holiday shopping a group outing. After all, pretty much everyone has to do it anyway.

This decade has seen technological advancement, investment in communities and economic recovery. It is crucial to look back at some of the big changes that took place this decade and properly evaluate if we are heading in the right direction as a global community. The way in which people communicate has altered drastically this decade. In the first quarter of 2010, Facebook reported having a staggering 431 million people using their platform. That number has since ballooned to over 2.4 billion users. Since Instagram’s launch in October 2010, they have accumulated over 1 billion users, and since Snapchat came around in July 2011, 203 million users have joined Snapchat. This advancement has dramatically changed the way our communities come together for better and for worse. The technological advancements have led to popular revolutions and have swung elections while connecting people to greater communities who may have otherwise been alone. The Arab Spring, a series of protests in the Middle East and North Africa, started in late 2010 in part because of social media’s ability to organize the political opposition. Much of our political campaigning in the U.S. is heavily reliant on the use of social media.
11
This decade has also seen huge advancements in human development in communities abroad, especially in developing countries. Global health trends are going in the right direction: the number of children who survive infancy all over the world has gone up every year this past decade, according to the World Health Organization. In 2010, 37.1 out of every 1,000 children did not survive infancy. Due to investment in global health, in 2018 the mortality rate dropped to 28.9 for every 1,000 infants. In the U.S., 90 percent of adults over the age of 25 had a high school education as of 2017, according to the U.S. census. That has gone up over two percentage points since the turn of the decade. This shows that the efforts our country has put into education have had a real impact on people’s lives. This effort has made the U.S. the sixth most educated country in the world, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. This decade has also been a time in which this country and countries abroad were only beginning to bounce back after the plight of the 2008 recession. At the beginning of the decade the poverty rate of Florida stood at 16 percent and as of 2018 it has fallen to 13.6 percent. Although there has been an improvement, the poverty rate for Florida is still higher than the national poverty rate for that year of 11.6 percent. It is helpful to take an honest look at the past decade and properly evaluate the upsides and downsides. With luck and continued investment in our future, the statistics for the 2020s will show the fruits of our efforts into communities all around the world.

Mophie Wireless Charging Pad $40 Wireless charging has become less of a niche option and more mainstream to charge today’s devices. A wireless charger is an item nearly everyone can use this year. Being able to charge an iPhone, Apple Watch or AirPods just by resting them on a pad is a luxury, and the pad also comes with lightning charge options. It is a far better alternative to archaic outlet-seeking plugs.

Deck the halls with DIY gifts at a discounted price and it is the perfect last minute gift.
By Hannah Halili C O R R E S P O N D E N T
Yummy Kits The holidays are approaching, and besides finals, one of the most stressful things right now is trying to figure out what to get your family and friends for Christmas. If you’re like me, you’re always looking for quick and easy gifts that are also affordable. Here are some ideas of DIY gifts you can make for your friends and family.
This is perfect to give to anyone who loves to eat. It is easy to make, thoughtful and in the “holiday” spirit. Things you need: ¼ cup powdered milk ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder ½ cup sugar ½ cup chocolate chips ½ cup candy cane, crushed Mason Jar Ribbon
Florida Christmas Wreath As you may know, it doesn’t get that cold in Florida. This gift is a cute way of showing what a “Florida Christmas” looks like. Things you need: One bag of mandarins Clear wrapping paper Twine Steps: Unroll the wrapping paper and line up eight clementines on the wrapping paper, making sure there is an ample amount on each side. Take the wrapping paper and fold it over the top of the oranges, then roll them a total of three times to form the look of a tube. Cut off the excess and tape the ends to close the tube. In between each orange tie a piece of twine. Gather the tube of oranges and bring the ends together to create a circle. Tie one last piece of twine to create the wreath shape. Add a gift tag to the top and now you have your Florida-style wreath to spice up your front door.
First, you need to make hot chocolate. You can buy it at the store, or you can make your
15
own. To make this, first take the powdered milk, cocoa powder and sugar, and whisk them together in one bowl. This is your hot chocolate. After that, fill the mason jar almost to the stop. Then, fill the rest with chocolate chips, crushed candy canes and marshmallows. To finish it off, just tie a red or white ribbon, candy canes for decor, add a gift tag and you’re finished. These DIY gift ideas are perfect for the college student looking for inexpensive, easy gifts. They are very customizable to the person you are giving it to, and the materials can be found at stores like Walmart or Target. These gifts are sure to make the holidays merry and bright for whoever you give them to.
You will need eight oranges and wrapping paper in order to make this Florida Christmas Wreath. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE
The Picture-Perfect Gift Idea No matter the occasion, this is my favorite gift idea. I recommend going to a store like TJ Maxx, Ross or Marshalls to get the materials. They always have photo frames, notebooks, mugs, socks and so much more on sale. Things you need: A picture frame At least two of the following: Mugs Socks Candy Notebook Lip balm, Lip gloss The essence of the gift is the
photo. Take a picture frame and fill it with your favorite photo with that person. It could also be a family photo or just any photograph that has a special meaning to the person you are giving the gift to. This way, it adds a personalized effect for the person receiving the gift. To add more to it, include little additions to make the gift more personalized. For example, a teenage girl might want a $5 Starbucks gift card, fuzzy socks and lip gloss. If you are shopping for someone like your mom, you can add a coffee mug, lip balm and maybe a notebook. For a guy, you can add athletic socks, their favorite gum or candy, headphones or a t-shirt. You can find a majority of this stuff at TJ Maxx or Ross
When making the hot chocolate mason jar, you can tie a red or white ribbon, add candy canes for decor or add a gift tag for some creative flair. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE
